Bill Gallo is an award-winning cartoonist who has created drawings for more than 40 years at the New York Daily News and commercially. He is especially devoted to war veterans. Gallo was a US Marine in the brigade that landed on Iwo Jima in 1945. With help from his cartoon characters, Basement Bertha the young Yuchie, General Von Steingrabber, and the other cartoon regulars; he salutes sports legends as well as historical leaders, family and friends.
Tim Baek and Ann McGettigan decided to catalog the cartoon collection of Gallo. Provenance: ◦ McGettigan worked with Gallo for 10 years at the New York Daily News. (1999-2009) ◦ She assisted Gallo with the computer colorization of his cartoon artwork for publication in the sports section of the daily newspaper. ◦ Gallo gave her these copies during that time. All were in excellent condition
To preserve the editorial cartoons of artist Bill Gallo. The images were published in the sports section of the New York Daily News.
a. Goals and Rationale
Appeal to libraries, museums and art archives around New York, and sports fans (young and old) from around the world. The images are a reference for historians, students and the informal learner. His work tackles tough issues such as racism, prejudice, warfare, and pays homage to people who made a difference in our society.
b. Target Audience
Gallo’s original artwork was created with pen, pencil, ink and gouache on paper. It was then photocopied, scanned, and cleaned up in PhotoShop. This process was performed to prepare his artwork for computer colorization and printing on offset presses. The cartoon was then optimized for printing in the sports section of the daily newspaper. This collection consists of 10 color reproductions with notes and instructions handwritten by the artist.
c. Analysis of Materials
Graduate Student Intern 1: Recruited from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Familiar with archival theory, XML encoding, and digitization standards, and able to decipher 20th century slang and sports history. Ideally has a background in American history, art and sports. Responsible for selection of art, scanning, some transcription and encoding, and content creation. Graduate Student Intern 2: Recruited from the Department of Computer Science or Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Familiar with XML encoding languages, metadata standards, and website design and maintenance. Responsible for XML transformations, website design and implementation, and technical maintenance. Digital Content Librarian: Full-time employee. Responsible for advising on digital content and web publication. 1% of full-time employment spent on project.
d. Staffing
JPEG derivatives were scanned on Epson Expression 10000XL, a large format scanner A high quality JPEG file format with their long dimension being 1200 pixels and the resolution reduced to 100 dpi The name of the master TIFF files and the JPEG derivatives conformed to a file naming convention, which was bgallo_YYYY_MMDD.tiff/jpeg The master TIFF files were archived in a separate directory for preservation and the JPEG derivatives were stored in a working directory

The View slideshow was used to create a thumbnail animation of the collection under Quick view in the left hand sidebar module.

Questions
Drupal’s limitations in type styling Tiny MCE module produced errant HTML code. Documentation on the Danland and Drupal sites showed a bug occurs when directly pasting text in the editing area.
Hire a graduate student intern for testing links, maintaining the site, and ensuring that the publication technologies involved have not fallen into disuse. Conduct Drupal database backup and archiving the website. Projects:
◦ Glossary of caricatures and names of cartoon characters ◦ Glossary of slang ◦ A timeline will also be developed to demonstrate the cartoon’s chronology and how they relate to events unfolding on the greater world stage.
The low costs is due to the Drupal Open Source software, Go Daddy.com servers and the graduate student interns.
