NOTE FROM THE EDITOR He’s debatably Scotland’s greatest sportsperson ever. The fact he still plays at the highest level is possibly the only thing holding him from that title. But what might have been had Andy Murray pursued the beautiful game instead? That’s the conundrum we’ve posed ourselves and in fact, the man himself, in Issue 3 of Grassroots magazine.
Russian linesman. It’s all a little pie in the sky, but one can only wonder what if.
Perhaps by now the famous scene in 1966 of Bobby Moore would have been replicated, albeit with Alan Hutton and Charlie Mulgrew holding aloft Andy Murray. Maybe we’d be thanking a

PERTH BOY KYLE’S A FUTSAL SUCCESS! BY RYAN ROWE For most Scottish teenagers, the decision to give up on football is a tough period of selfassessment. It usually comes down to one or more of the following: emphasis on education, work commitments and lack of fitness (or ability). None of this was the case for Kyle Ballingall, who gave up on football to focus on its sexy younger brother futsal, and is now enjoying plying his trade at the highest level in France.
Despite already grabbing goals for his new team and scoring in the UEFA Futsal Cup, Kyle still has ambitions left unmet. “When I started playing I had three ambitions, the first was to play in a European league, the second is to play for the Scottish National Team and the last one is to help futsal in Scotland progress to the level that I have been playing in.” In Scotland, there are six regional leagues: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, and Stirling, with a league in Angus due to start in time for the 2016-2017 season. Over time the number of futsal players in Scotland has grown to around 500 and 2015 was the first time that a national championship was held, with the top representatives from each league facing off against one another last May. Fair City Santos – from Perth, no less – won the tournament, and with that a place in the UEFA Futsal Cup.
KYLE BALLINGAL WITH TEAMMATE JONI
Kyle has travelled from his home in Perth, where he first picked up the sport aged 10, to Croatia, Spain and now France. He wears number four for Nantes Erdre Futsal, of the Championnat de France de Futsal D1, and netted two goals on his first match in 2016 (Nantes lost 6-3). Kyle said: “The reason I started playing is because of my brother, he was playing and told me there was a league for children my age so I suggested it to my class mates and we created a team.”
Kyle played futsal in tandem with football until he took the decision to move to Croatia, to focus on learning futsal in more depth. The move came through his then-coach in Perth, Steve Chatila, who was friends with Mico Martic (the current Finland manager) who at the time was the coach of Alumnus. Steve made the call to Mico asking if it was possible for Kyle to go to Zagreb and train – and he cleared the path to goal for Kyle to chase glory.
When asked how the move to France came about, Kyle said: “England international Doug Reed who put me in contact with Nantes Erdre Futsal and after talking I knew I wanted to come here and have the opportunity to play in this team. “After being here for 6 months, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play with this club.”
Quick-Fire Q&A with Kyle Ballingall
First football match you remember attending as a fan? St. Johnstone 5-0 Motherwell, George O’Boyle scored a wondergoal
Kyle’s words of advice for aspiring footballers and futsal players were short and sweet (just like his 5ft7 height and left-footed strike against Toulon): “Work hard, listen and be yourself on and off the pitch/court.”
Favourite goal that you’ve ever scored? VS Lokomotyvas in the UEFA Futsal Cup
After a while in Croatia, Kyle felt he had improved enough and decided to move to Spain. He would continue his development in the Spanish second tier, and soon felt he was ready for a big move.
Favourite futsal player? Ricardinho
“After training in these countries, I made the decision last summer that I wanted to sign for a European club and when the opportunity in France was available, I wanted to experience the futsal player’s life,” he said.

GREAT GRASSROOTS SITS DOWN WITH ANDY MURRAY TO TALK ABOUT HIS youth football career, What it takes to be a top professional athlete AND Whether he’d prefer to win Wimbledon or the World Cup?
A
s Andy Murray describes, the day when he had to choose between professional tennis player and professional footballer was, simply put, difficult. Luckily, for Scottish sport, he has won 35 tennis titles throughout his career including Wimbledon in 2013 and most recently, the Davis Cup. But one could wander: what if? At six-foot three, Andy Murray has the height of a towering striker, or maybe a solid centre back. With a grandfather who used to be a defender for Hibernian, football runs through his veins. “I think I picked it up quite naturally” he said. “However, I’m a more attacking player and wanted to score goals, so I would always play as a striker or as an attacking midfielder.”
Aside from hitting the park with his brother Jamie and making good use of the backyard in order to practice skills while playing with friends. Andy admitted he didn’t play for many clubs in his youth years, saying “I played a lot in and out of school and also for the school team, which I think is how I got scouted”.
the manager shouting instructions from the sidelines, which I’m sure provide a huge reassurance. However, tennis is not the same, when you’re out there on the court, you only have yourself, your coach isn’t allowed to coach you. There’s very little room for error”. While Andy himself admits the two sports are completely different, we did have to ask the Wimbledon champion if he’d prefer winning the World Cup or keeping tennis’ treasured trophy. “I remember when I won Wimbledon I felt a huge sense of relief” he said. “Years of hard work (and pain) had finally paid dividends and I was incredibly proud.
I would love to know what it feels like to score in a World Cup final
By the time Rangers FC gave the young Glaswegian an opportunity at youth level when he was 15, Andy Murray had already won titles with a racket in his hand. His first tournament victory was as an under-10 junior at the Dunblane Sports Club and two years after the offer from Rangers, Murray made his professional debut in April 2005.
Even though his choices led him afar from a possible career with football, it still is very present in his life. “Despite choosing Tennis, every now and then I try to squeeze in a five-aside game, which is always great fun. I also love watching it and I take my fantasy football pretty seriously”.
ANDY FACT
MURRAY IS THE YOUNGEST PERSON EVER TO REPRESENT BRITAIN IN THE DAVIS CUP
He reckons that the feeling involved in winning between tennis and football aren’t that similar. “The sports are completely different” he said. “The emotions of winning, however, are probably a little distinct. In football you’re part of a team, you have your teammates with you on the pitch and
“In football, I’m sure there’s that sense of relief especially for national teams, but at the same time it’s a more collective pride and sense of achievement for them. I don’t know if you can compare it with the emotion of scoring a winner goal in a World Cup Final. Both competitions are the peak of their sports, and to win either them is an incredible accomplishment. “That being said though, I would love to know what it feels like to score in a World Cup final, although I think it’s probably a bit late to change careers!” As one of the greatest athletes of all time, Andy Murray can give excellent pieces of advice to all those who are thinking of aiming for a successful career in Football, or any other sport for that matter.

“Practice, practice, practice!” he said. “You can have all the natural ability in the world but that will only get you so far. It’s important to always remind yourself that you can always improve. There is always something you can improve on, even if it’s by one percent, in elite sport especially, that extra one percent can make a huge difference and can often be the difference between winning and losing. Make sure you work hard on all aspects of your game, including the things you think you’re good at”.

or over twenty years Challenger Sports and British Soccer, has given football coaches from the United Kingdom and Ireland the chance to travel, coach, and be a part of the soccer explosion in the US and Canada. Better yet, not only does this give coaches the experience of a lifetime, it can also lead to a potential full time career in soccer in the USA. The Challenger Sports Scottish recruitment days ran over the course of the previous few months. If you missed the chance to attend, and you’re still interested in coaching in the USA this summer, we can arrange an initial Skype interview with a Challenger Sports representative. Just email info@ youthfootballscotland.co.uk or call 0131 629 7903
Can you introduce yourself and explain your coaching background? I am a 21 year-old 4th Year Sports Studies Student at the University of Stirling, hoping to go on to do a Postgraduate degree in Teaching next year. In terms of coaching my main role is with Cumbernauld Colts, mostly with the 2002s (U13) section, and the Community or youngest Academy groups. I have been with the club for almost 5 years now, having initially worked with the 2005s team. In addition, I coach in schools across Cumbernauld most days of the week through North Lanarkshire Leisure’s Active Schools programme. I regularly write about my opinions, learning and experiences on my website www. coachchrismclaughlin. wordpress.com
a little so it was time to go out onto the pitch for the practical element. The rest of the candidates were all very helpful to each other in terms of helping move goals and so on. I delivered a session on 1v1 Attacking and Moves to Beat an Opponent, which went well.
What kind of feedback did you get from your session on the day? I ended up in quite a fortunate position that I was effectively allocated a contract there and then. This was due to the fact that between graduation (hopefully!) and beginning my PGDE course (if I get in!) then I will be quite tight in terms of dates. The assessors were impressed by my delivery, so I was able to pencilled in for 5 weeks in Cincinnati, Ohio, from the start of July. I was delighted. In terms of my own session I feel that it went really well, I felt sufficiently prepared and the guys taking part asked some good questions which aided the learning and understanding of the rest of the group.
NEW COACH CHRIS MCLAUGHLIN TALKS TO US ABOUT COACHING WITH CHALLENGER IN THE USA
How did you hear about the opportunity to coach in the USA with Challenger Sports? To be honest, coaching in North America through Challenger Sports has been something I have wanted to do for a long long time. I have had friends who’s older siblings have gone over the years and the whole idea has always appealed greatly to me. I heard about it this year through Youth Football Scotland after browsing their website and exchanging a few e-mails with some of the guys there.
Can you describe the recruitment day you attended?
“coaching in North America through Challenger Sports has been something I have wanted to do for a long long time.”
The recruitment day took place at Stirling University, so I was in the fortunate position of already being familiar with the surroundings. Due to the weather, the plan for the day was slightly flipped on its head. After a welcome, introduction and some paperwork, we were taken to an individual interview. There the questions ranged from experience and education to future plans and some scenarios based on children’s behaviour and such like. After that the weather had dried up
What appeals most to you about coaching in the USA & Canada? Having spent 5 months in Australia last year studying abroad through university, I am desperate to travel again. I thoroughly enjoy coaching and saw this as a great way to enjoy pushing myself to further my learning and experiences. To be honest it will be great to be able to coach in some sunshine wearing just shorts and a t-shirt!
Do you have any other comments to make? I can’t wait to get going, I wish we were away tomorrow! Looking forward to the training weekend down at Warwick University in March. Very exciting few months ahead. This opportunity and the possibility of beginning my Postgrad are two great motivations for knuckling down for the last 3 months of my undergraduate degree.

How to perform
the neck stall
The basics
1
Start by stalling the ball on your foot. If you can’t manage this, feel free to chip the ball up or even throw the ball to begin with.
34
2
Flick the ball to just above your head height. Too low and you’ll be unable to move in time. Too high and the ball will be much harder to stop.
3
Bend your upper body forward with your arms out to help you balance. Now try and stall the ball on your neck.
4
When the ball stops and is balanced, complete the move by flicking the ball into the air at a reasonable height and continue your routine.
TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
warning
Children should be supervised when performing these manoeuvres, should practise safely, and in a safe location. Any difficult manoeuvres and tricks (i.e. ‘take it to the next level’) should often be practised thoroughly and mastered without the ball before moving on to include a football. If you suffer any pain or discomfort while performing any manoeuvre, stop immediately and seek medical advice.

The ball should be on your temple, with it touching the top of your ear. During the stall, you should maintain eye contact with ball at all times. If you feel the ball moving during the stall, move your head (and body if required) accordingly.

neck stall handstand NB: Before performing this trick, you must be able to perform the neck stall and a handstand. If you can’t, practise safely and with adult supervision if required.
1
2
In a neck stall position, lean forwards and place your hands on the ground. In the same movement, use your momentum to push your legs upwards and put yourself in the handstand position. Keep the ball stalled on your neck and maintain the handstand position for as long as is comfortable. To finish the manoeuvre, bring your legs back to the ground with your hands in the same position. You can either return to a normal neck stall or flick the ball up to continue your routine.
When the ball is stalled on your neck, lift your body up slightly and allow the ball to roll off either shoulder. Try not to ‘flick’ the ball as the momentum of you moving upwards should be enough.
Move your head around the ball and catch it on your neck to return to the original position. Remember to try and keep the ball close to your face when performing the move.
Neck stall push-ups 1
In a neck stall position, slowly manoeuvre your body into a push up position. Importantly, placing your hands on the ground should help maintain balance as you move.
2
Once in a push-up position and your happy the ball is stationary, begin performing your push-ups. If you find push-ups difficult and/or sore, don’t perform this trick. You don’t want to hurt yourself!

FULL NAME Andrew Henderson DOB 16th Dec 1991 HOMETOWN Exeter ACCOMPLISHMENTS & WORLD RECORDS Current & 4 X World Champion, 6 X UK Champion What youth teams did you play for when you were younger? I could have played for Manchester United when I was younger but I broke my leg and ankle during a rugby match in Cornwall and after I recovered freestyle was my main priority as I realised the skill side of football was the part I loved the most! When and how did you start getting involved in freestyle? I saw a video of a legend / pioneer of freestyle Soufiane Touzani doing tricks in late 2005 and started in early 2006 trying to learn those moves. As one of the first mainstream freestylers, you’ve seen freestyle football become more popular with time. How proud are you to be involved in that growth? Super proud! - I have massive plans for the development of the sport and it’s gonna be getting the attention it deserves over the next few years I have no doubt about it. Who was your football and or freestyle idol when you were growing up/ starting out? Palle from Sweden , Mr. Woo from Korea, and Soufiane Touzani. You hold a number of incredible achievements and world records, which one are you most proud of? I’m most proud of winning the last world championships as it solidified my place as the greatest of all time. That was my dream. Are there any titles and/or world records you’re looking to achieve in the future? I want to win more world titles and national titles of course as I’m still young! But this is just a part of it all now as I have a bigger aim to grow the sport so I must keep winning but also I am developing more of an ambassadorial role within the freestyle football federation (F3) which is basically the FIFA of freestyle football.

Q&A with current AND GREATEST EVER freestyle football world champion, Andrew Henderson
What projects and/or work are you currently involved in? I am working on a few projects at the moment combining different sports and art forms with freestyle football. I am also working really hard with my doubles partner to make the best double act possible. These as well as many plans for trips abroad doing commercials, world tour competitions and personal appearances will take up most of next year. When I am back in London (my current home) I will be training as hard as possible and making YouTube videos from my trips!
Favourite console game? FIFA Toughest freestyle opponent? Myself - I don’t find any of them a problem if I’m on my top form. That’s the honest truth.
Finally, what advice would you give to a youth footballer looking to start out in freestyle? Go for it! - It really helped bring out the confidence in me and is a great way of staying fit. The freestyle scene is fantastic so everyone will be happy to offer advice or feedback if you ask them questions. First football match you remember attending as a fan? Plymouth Argyle vs I can’t remember! Your favourite freestyle trick? Henderson move (have to choose my own trick!) Your favourite food? I AM A MACHINE when it comes to food I EAT EVERYTHING! Your favourite drink? WATER! What boots/gear do you currently wear? At the moment I am trying new pairs but I also train often with no shoes on. I think it really improves the touch. Playstation or Xbox? NATURE!

and counting! With over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube and the creator of one of the most famous series’, ‘7 minute squads’, Jack54HD sits down with Grassroots to discuss being an online sensation What youth teams did you play for when you were growing up and were you a good footballer? The first and really only youth league club I played for was a local team called Withdean 2000 which I joined from under 7’s. Football was in my blood from the moment I kicked a football, myself and my dad would always go down the local park or school fields to work on different aspects to my game for example practising with my weak foot. As the years went on I started to gain a bit of interest as player which lead to being offered a place on a Sussex Development Football training programme. The extra

training sessions and in-depth coaching every week really helped my game and not long after joining I was offered trials at Brighton & Hove Albion. However, after the 6 week trial I was told I was as good as they already had which meant they wouldn’t take me on. Being young it was hard to understand but most importantly I didn’t let it get to me. I kept improving and for the next few years I was a part of every District & County team possible in my area including a Brighton Boys District side that went on to win the cup in what I can only describe as my most memorable year in football. During the transition between Primary School and Secondary school I was offered a place on a Chelsea Training Programme by a Chelsea scout at a tournament with the opportunity to have a trial if they liked what they saw. Regretfully I never took up the offer to go due to other commitments which still to this day leaves me thinking what would have happen if I had gone, I can see now that it was a golden opportunity missed. The next season I quit football for a couple of years due to other interests. However, during the past few years I rekindled my love for the game and now play for a Saturday county league side. One piece of advice I hope people can take away from this is to never take for granted any opportunity you are given.
When did you decide to start making YouTube videos? I started making YouTube videos the year I left Secondary School which was June 2011. What made you decide to start a YouTube channel? This was actually my second YouTube channel I made, my first was a channel where I would upload videos of me and my friends skateboarding which was where I learnt to edit videos essentially. I made my FIFA Channel (Jack54HD) mainly because I saw other people doing it and thought it looked fun, the interaction between the content creator and the viewer was what really sold it for me. The ability to have people watch your videos from anywhere in the world and both share a love for the game was a real attraction. At what point did you decide to make YouTube a full time job? Was it a tough decision? I decided to make YouTube a full time job when I left college. I was at the end of my third year in a film-making course and everyone was assessing their options for universities and I knew going down that route was not something I would enjoy and benefit from. It was generally a hard time because I was told by teachers it wasn’t a viable option, however, my parents believed in me so I went for it and I haven’t looked back since.

“I was told by teachers YouTube wasn’t a viable option, however, my parents believed in me so I went for it!” One of your series, 7 minute squads, is one of the most famous FIFA concepts on Youtube. Where did the idea come from? The idea was actually helped by my girlfriend. I had the concept of adding a time limit to building a hybrid squad on FIFA Ultimate Team but didn’t know what to call it. A few names were flown round but essentially it ended up myself and my girlfriend saying ‘5 Minute Squads, 6 Minute Squads..’ etc and eventually we got to 7 Minute Squads and it seemed to roll off the tongue better than any other. The series was born! Your YouTube channel is now over half a million subscribers. How proud are you of this and the growth of your channel?
I’m immensely proud but at the same time I am the kind of person who is never satisfied with anything I do, I always think there is room for improvement. That’s not to say I am not massively appreciative of all the support I’ve been given by my viewers over the years. However, I do feel, never being completely satisfied with my work has somewhat helped me get to where I am today.
If someone was looking to start out on YouTube tomorrow, what one piece of advice would you give them? Never start YouTube in the mindset you’re going to make money out of it. Do it because you are passionate about it and then the perks may follow. The most important thing in terms of growing your channel is to be consistent; viewers like to know when there will be a new video on your channel and also to have a USP (unique selling point); create a series no one has done before, show your personality. Lastly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it will happen!

THE
GRILLING
MARK WOTTE
Every issue gives you the chance to grill a big name with a link to grassroots football in Scotland, this month it’s Mark Wotte. Proudly. That’s how Mark Wotte left his position as performance director at the SFA in 2014. Proud for what he achieved and proud for what was set in motion for years to come. During his time on the role, Wotte and the SFA implemented seven Performance Schools in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Kilmarnock and Motherwell. These are focused on being a platform of talented players to develop individually on a day to day basis. To excel on the bigger picture, Wotte believes in looking towards youth and grassroots included.
42
“We have to think that we have the base of the pyramid – grassroots – and the top end - elite player development -, the stronger the base, the firmer and higher the top of the pyramid can be” With that thought in mind, it becomes understandable the reasons behind the creation of the Club Academy Scotland Certification System. “It works as an audit of the academies with MPO (measurable performance outcomes) as the basis of the funding of the Clubs. So the money is spread over those clubs that really contribute to the development of the future Scottish top players. Players who will ensure World Cup and European Cup qualification in the future”.
THE GRASSROOTS GRILLING
“There are some short-sighted Clubs, that want to get more money from the SFA to pay their bills instead of funding Grassroots and Youth Development and Performance Programs”. And according to Mark Wotte, results started to show as the Scots have won the Victory Shield with the U16’s for the first time since 1998 and reached the Semi-final of the European Championships U17’s for the first time ever. “This showed substantial progress of performances with National Youth Teams, benefitting from the new philosophy and talent identification strategy that began in 2011”. Not only boys football has shown signs of enhancing success, the girls were also enjoying a run among the best teams. “Women’s Football is improving drastically under the inspirational leadership of Anna Signeul”. On the broader aspect of football in Scotland, Wotte believes that the models used in Spain, Belgium and Germany should be followed. “The Clubs are too much involved in the whole long term strategy of developing. On the other hand, I believe it should be run mostly by the SFA likes in countries who have
enjoyed recent success in a global stage, to avoid self-interest”. “There are some short-sighted Clubs, that want to get more money from the SFA to pay their bills instead of funding Grassroots and Youth Development and Performance Programs”. Ultimately, being able to identify a potential talent is the first step into achieving success. After the identification process, comes the development of those core skills. And Mark Wotte knew exactly what skills he was looking for. “Ability, Attitude, Awareness, Agility, Athleticism and Adaptability”. Although he didn’t stay in office to watch as his 10 years plan for Scottish Football unfolded, he only has one small regret. “I wish I could have been more involved in The Coach Education for me to not only influence the new Playing Generation but also the new Coaching Generation. I believe that this is essential to ensure substantial progress”.
Mark Wotte is certain that Brian McClair will benefit from the same helpful task force he had. “I can’t judge the current status of Scottish Youth Football, but I’m sure good people like Neil MacKintosh, Campbell Money, Derek Hunter and the National Team Coaches, Anna Signeul, Ricky Sbragia and Scot Gemmill, will inspire Brian as they have inspired me, in order to continue what was implemented over the last four years”.

Scotland 2016
T
he new Scotland 2016 kit has been announced to some seriously mixed reviews. Some are raving about the new tartan home kit and the bold pink away shirt, while others are less keen about the designs.
If you’re in the latter category, why not consider the Scotland training top (far left). It’s plainer in design and you’ll save yourself a few pennies in the process!
werder bremen as roma This pre-match AS Roma shirt is as good as they come! The Nike design has actually been used by other clubs, so if you’re looking for another team, you might just be in luck.
44
Werder Bremen might not be a team well known to many in the UK, they’ve won the Bundesliga as recently as 2003-04 and we’re Europa League runners-up in 200809. With this slick design as well, there is no reason you shouldn’t be backing these fashionable German underdogs.
athletico madrid Outside of Spain’s big two, Atletico are the team to beat and if you want to support another underdog, then this is the team to get behind. Currently battling at the top of La Liga, you can get backing them with this nice shirt.
FASHION
Spain 2015/16 away shirt
An incredibly cool design from Adidas with an original take on what can often be the ‘boring’ away shirt. At £90 though, it’s an expensive purchase!
Northern Ireland 2015/16 home shirt
We’re not blown away by this design and the stripe across the chest doesn’t help in our opinion. Unless you’re supporting the Green and White army, we’d give this a miss.
Czech Republic 2015/16 home shirt
While there might not be many fans of the Czech Republic, their home kit will certainly draw support. This sleek puma design is top drawer and we’ll be backing to see more of it, rather than less.
Belgium 2015/16 away shirt
Based on Belgium’s famous cycling jerseys, it’s a totally new design for the national team. We’re not keen though on the light blue and think maybe best left to the cyclists!
Germany 2015/16 pre-match shirt (black)
This design does seem quite hit or miss, but we’re happily in the hit category. Instead of just going pure black, the fading into grey with the typography of ‘Deutschland’ is a nice touch.
Romania 2015/16 away shirt
This red Joma shirt just doesn’t cut the mustard in our eyes. Plain shirts are common at international level, but it’s the Euro’s guys! We’d have expected more.
NIKE TEE
ADIDAS HOODIE
ADIDAS ADIZERO TEE
This a very cool design from Nike and it comes it varying colour schemes. We personally like the grey design, but take your pick as all are quality.
With spring approaching, getting yourself a smart hoodie is a good plan. This one from Adidas is new in and looks fantastic. We personally prefer the dark grey look, but there is a blue alternative if you prefer.
Another product that’s new in from Adidas in the form of the adizero tee. Designed mainly for running and sport, this t-shirt will keep you fresh and make you stand-out from the crowd.

KICK IT? adidas X 15.1 Firm/Artificial Ground Boots A rather interesting design from Adidas, but we love these core black boots. They’re not over the top, but with a touch of flash, they’re ideal for any player on the park. If you do want to stand-out a little bit more though, you can pre-order the new ‘Solar Gold’ and ‘Shock Pink’ version. We’d personally give them a miss though.

NIKE MAGISTA OBRA AG-R Described as Metallic Pewter, we’re a big fan of these Nike magista’s. You’ll stand out from the crowd, but these are an ideal pair of boots for the more flamboyant player out there.
46
ADIDAS ACE 16+ PURECONTROL Firm Ground Boots The newest boots on the football market and they are beaut. Described as ‘solar green’, with the three black stripes, and with hidden laces, these are the boots to have at the moment. Worn by Meszut Ozil, Oscar, and Dele Alli, the boots are designed with the intention to ‘boss everyone’.
At around £200 though you’d certainly hope so! You can pre-order the Ace 16. variations now, but we’re not as keen on the pink stripes instead of black and the fact the laces are shown. If you can afford the originals, we’d highly recommend.

Volunteering with YFS Are you interested in working in the media industry? Want to gain practical experience in a multi-media environment? Or maybe you just want to contribute to help promote the grassroots game. If you meet any of these criteria, volunteering with Youth Football Scotland could be for you. We are always looking to get new volunteers involved with our organisation no matter what age you are, where you live, or what experience you have. All we ask is that our volunteers are keen to get involved and want to positively promote the grassroots game in Scotland. With over 100 current volunteers, and with many previous volunteers going on to obtain work in the media industry, we have a strong record of helping people develop their skills in an area of their passion. As we look to expand and enhance our coverage for 2015/16, there isn’t a better time to get involved. At the moment YFS provides volunteering opportunities in the following areas:
Match report Covering youth football matches for the Scottish FA, SPFL, SYFA, and SWFA.
Article writing Covering different stories and/or events for multiple different organisations, clubs, and teams.
Photography Covering youth football matches and events. This includes the most high profile youth matches in the country from Hampden Park, Celtic Park, Ibrox stadium, and Scotland youth national matches. Videography Providing TV highlights or more creative
pieces. As well, for the best and most committed videographers, paid work is often available.
YFS Radio Live radio commentaries from the biggest youth matches and the possibility of a new weekly podcast.
Summer media internship If you’re based in or around the Edinburgh area, we are offering the opportunity to have a two to four week internship at our office. All our volunteers have the opportunity to get involved in all of these areas, and we actively encourage this as part of developing multi-media skills. However, each volunteer decides what areas they want to work in and how much time they commit.

Grassroots gets to know a little more about Regan Hendry, our first rising star Interview by: Robert Wilson • Author: Bruno Pantaleoni Which clubs did you play for in your career? I started off at Caledonia, and then after Caledonia I played for Troon Thistle, I played for Troon for years. What youth teams did you play for when you were starting out? AC Oxgangs, from 5 to 9 years old, and Hutchie, from 9 to 15 years old. When and how did you get picked up by Celtic? I was watched over the course of a couple of years. At the time I was enjoying my football at Hutchie and I decided to stay there until a more serious age. When I was 15 I decided it was time for me to step up the challenge. Who are the best players you’ve played with/against in your career (including present day)? It’s a tough one, but I would have to say Scott Allen. He is very technical and can create and score goals, which is what I try to base my game on. Great to watch. If you ask me about players I played against, I would have to say that I have played against a lot of young players whom I believe will go on and achieve great things in football. Cerny, the Ajax winger who scored against Celtic in the Europa League, is one good example. Who was your idol when you were growing up? Steven Gerrard. His passion for the game is inspirational. I always looked up to him. You’re currently in Development Squad at Celtic, but you’ve played with a number of the first team squad. What’s that experience like? I have only recently taken part in my first team game. It was a friendly against Villareal but it was unbelievable. I think I only played for like 10/15 minutes, but the atmosphere was different from anything I had ever experienced.
50
What players in the current Celtic first team do you look up to? Scott Brown and Callum McGregor. Scott is a great guy and stays in Edinburgh, which is always helpful. Callum is probably the hardest working player I’ve ever seen. I think because he was a youth player just a couple years back, I find it great to see him stepping up at the moment and getting his chances. Imagine you’re 37 and at the end of your career, what do you hope to have achieved? At the end of my career I’d have hoped I enjoyed a good spell with Celtic, having multiple European experiences and winning trophies. I think the most important factor is that I can look back and have no regrets about it. What advice would you give to a youth footballer looking to make it in the industry? Make sure you enjoy playing! Plain and simple. Sometimes you have to be patient, but work hard and enjoy it. Whenever you get the chance, express yourself. First football match you remember attending as a fan? Rangers vs Hearts in 2007, 2-1. I was young and my dad dragged me along because he got free tickets, but I wouldn’t go back!
Your favourite goal that you’ve ever scored? Vs Rangers. In the 90th minute 1-1, volley from 12 yards out busting the net to win it! Took the booking for taking my top of, but it was worth it! Your favourite food? A white Kinder Bueno Your favourite drink? Milk What boots do you currently wear? Red Adidas X Favourite film? Casino Royale, but I am also a massive fan of rom coms Playstation or Xbox? Xbox Favourite console game? FIFA 16
