One of the most difficult tasks I have had to perform this year is to write 'traditional' letters of best wishes for McGill's formal occasions and celebrations, and attempt to make them look original or creative. I want it understood at the outset that there are only so many ways to say Merry Christmas.

My fellow students,

We are fast approaching that time - McGill's longest official break and a time for people to extend those best wishes to their colleagues and their friends. C'est une période de récupération, de préparation, de réflexion et d'évaluation. Si vous êtes comme moi, vous aurez besoin des vacances pour vous remettre des examens de la semaine prochaine. Yet, applying Murphy's law to most people's exam schedule, there probably isn't much of a 'break' to recover, let alone prepare for the new year. This has been a trying year for McGill and its student body. The financial problems of the University and of the Students' Society have materialized in a very real form (e.g. shorter Library hours and University Centre hours). It has also been a year of meeting challenges and looking to the future. We approach the new year with a new Chancellor, and the "Advancement Program", which is the largest fund drive in Canadian University history. For those of you graduating at this stage, on behalf of McGill, all the best for the future. To everyone, my wannest Season's Greetings and best wishes for '84. Until then, I remain, as always, Yours very truly,

In Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol we see Scrooge, a human being incapable of appreciatin g the joy of Christm as. Haunted by v isio n s of past sadness and fu tu re m isery, he was overcome by a c h ild 's tru s t and fam ily love symbolized in t h e ir cele b ra tio n s and was surp rise d t o . d iscover the joy of Christm as. Some have said Dickens "invented" Christm as. But at b e st, Dickens' account was another eloquent dram atization of the Christmas s p i r i t , depicted so often over the cen tu rie s in many b ea u tifu l ways. Because i t is an ancient and great C h ris tia n fe s t iv a l and c e le b ra tio n , i t s f e s t i v i t i e s serve to remind us of fam ily gatherings and goodwill towards men. Christmas combines w ith our New Year to mark two tu rning p o in ts, one immediate, the other tim e le s s . For a l l of us, students and s t a f f a lik e , i t is the one major break in the school y e a r, a time fo r re la x a tio n with fa m ilie s and frie n d s to be enjoyed to the f u l l . I t is a lso a time to remind ourselves of the s p i r i t of peace and joy of Christm as. Refreshed w ith t h is s p i r i t , we cornmence a new ye a r b o ld ly, co n fid e n tly and with good w i l l . In wishing you a happy Christmas and a jo y fu l 1984, I hope the s p i r i t of Christm as, so p ictu resq ue ly portrayed in Dickens' Christm as C a ro l, w ill enrich your own l iv e s , your fam ily and our so ciety as we face the challenges of the coming y e a r.

Hockey Redmen Shoot High by Howard Lando Defensive lapses proved cost ly for the McGill Redmen as they missed their last chanpe to regain first place in the Q U A A in front o f their own fans in a 5-5 tie with the Ottawa GeeGees on Friday November 25th. McGill finishes o ff the semester with four road games before e m b a rk in g on a trip to Switzerland at Christmas. In the fie, the Redmen twice blew three goal leads, o f 3-0 and 4 -1, seeming to get lulled into the sloppy play o f their op ponents. With the score tied at 4 going into the third period, the Redmen appeared to have the

gam e w on w hen D ave Ducharme poked in a loose puck on a power-play at 9 :2 0 o f the final stanza. But, at 16:39, after Redmen defenseman Jay McMullen was checked hard behind his own net, seemingly shaking up the entire McGill squad, O ttawa’ s Jean Gauthier fired in a centering pass from Rock Voisine to force the deadlock. N oticeab ly m issing from McGill’s line-up was star for ward George Burnett (suffer ing with bronchitis), whose regular line-mates, swift-skating Mark Reade and scoring ace Alain Robichaud, were split up

by coach Ken Tyler. It worked for Reade, who set up two goals by team captain Yves Beaucage. Pierre Jean, on a power play, and Doug Harrison rounded out the scoring for McGill. Six nights earlier, the Redmen suffered their only loss at home this season to Les Inuks de Chicoutimi, by a score o f 6-2. In front o f a Saturday night crowd o f 549 boisterous but knowledgeable hockey fans at McConnell W inter Stadium, Inuk goalie Pierre Cote stopped 37 o f 39 shots including all 18 he faced in the third period to frustrate the Redmen and take f i r s t - s t a r h o n o rs . L e a g u e leading scorer Daniel Larouche assisted on three goals including the winner by Chicoutimi’s cond period. Some help from the referee who ignored many o f les Inuks’ blatant fouls while punishing the Redmen for ques tionable ones, allowed M cGill’s nemesis to score three goals in the final period, getting from second-star Jean-Pierre Allard and one from the league’ s leading scorer, Sylvain Ross. “ They’ve got our num ber,” sa id M cG ill f o r w a r d A1 Craw ford o f the team that eight o -4- * O days earlier had outscored CU McGill 9-3, despite being outshot 48-30 by the Redmen in

Chicoutimi. “ W e took advantage o f our chances and I made the key saves,” explained C ote, “ but McGill is still a good team and w ill f in is h ahead of C on cord ia.” R edm en fo rw a rd D ave Ducharme, the gam e’s third star, got McGill on the board with a superb unassisted shorthanded goal at 2 :0 6 o f the se cond stanza, and later in the period was the target o f a temper tantrum thrown by Chicoutimi defenseman Roger Vellieu, who was bothered by something other than the fact that the free spaghetti for the fans never arrived from the kit chens o f Royal Victoria C ol lege. Thinking he had lost all his teeth, he threw his helmet at the Redmen forward who had ac cidentally high-sticked him and received only a 10-m inute m isconduct and two minor penalties for his very dangerous and unusual actions. And scor ing ace George Burnett took Gilles H udon’s brilliant pass from behind the net and fired the only other goal past Cote at 8 :1 0 o f the middle period. The previous night, the Redmen scored two power-play goals and one short-handed to equal their entire specialty team ’s output against Trois

Rivieres in the six games they played last season, in an 8-1 vic t o r y . S e c o n d s t a r A la in R o b ic h a u d s c o r e d tw ic e , Burnett added a goal and two a ssists, and firs t-s ta r defenceman Réal Paiement con tributed a goal and an assist to lead the onslaught. “ They should have mailed us the two points,” said third-star A1 Craw ford o f the team that managed only two shots at Redmen goalie Darren Turner in the third period, one on a breakaway and the other the re bound o f that scoring chance that Robichaud inadvertantly directed into his own net. The biggest win o f the season, though, had to be a 5-2 victory over Concordia on Nov. 15. Ducharme, the player o f the game against the Stingers with 3 assists said “ intensity” was the key to the Redmen’s second consecutive victory over their rivals, only their third in 40 meetings between the two clubs. Textbook forechecking by all the Redmen forwards threw a blanket over the Stingers’ at tack, and many o f the 567 fans left the M cConnell W inter Stadium, wondering if C oncor dia coach Paul A rsenault’s dream o f a legitimate McGillC oncordia hockey rivalry may have, in fact, come true.
