L e tte r T o T h e E d ito r Dear McGill Tribune, On behalf of the Computing Centre of McGill University, I find it necessary to answer a letter written to the McGill Tribune on March 5 in complaint of our laser printing service. This ser vice, originally introduced in May 1984 on a trial basis only, provides bold, italic and bold italic printing on the XEROX 9700 laser printer. Un fortunately, due to the high purchase price of the 9700 printer, the Computing Centre is forced to use the resources of an outside company for this service. The XEROX 9700 is available to all users at a charge of $0.06 per page excluding a $1.25 fixed handling charge per job. Unfortunately for Lorianne Weston (and others?), the Computing Centre cannot be held responsible for users who feel compelled to criticize this service when they, themselves, refuse to keep informed about up dates and/or changes to our documentation. In the November issue of the Computing Centre Newsletter, an article was written and posted at all remote job entry stations reminding users of current laser charges and announcing that the $1.25 cost was a fixed charge and not a minimum. The Computing Centre had the op tion to increase the overall cost per page or charge overhead, and, because it wouldn’t be fair to users with large documents to have to sub sidize smaller jobs, we decided on the latter. This overhead charge helps to pay for the off-campus service as well as for job and page dividers that enable Computing Centre operators to separate the output and organize its distribution. These dividers represent extra pages that are not nor mally returned to the user but which comprise chargeable output. This is the reason that users may think they’re paying for more pages than they actually receive. The Computing Centre, however, does not charge the user any more than it costs to supply this service; it is a non-profit ar rangement. Before this arrangement was con tracted, all laser jobs were charged $40.00 for setup costs. We now provide a high-quality prin

ting service at a reduced cost based on a bulk rate that we are able to pass on to all computing users. As far as our “ take it or leave it” policy is con cerned, if hardware or software problems occur that ultimately result in unexpected output, the Computing Centre is ready to absorb all costs. The user is informed of any unexpected pro blems, usually through the electronic NEWS facility, and these are usually resolved the same day. It should be noted that the XEROX 9700 printing service is designed to print large documents overnight. For smaller documents, users can submit to the XEROX 2700 laser printer which is availabe at Burnside Hall to all users at a charge of $0.05 per page. This cost ap plies to ALL output pages, including header pages, and job and page dividers, but users do not have to wait overnight for their output. Contrary to Ms. Weston’s implication that the Computing Centre has joined in the bureaucratic plot to rob students of their basic rights, anyone can see that we are providing a service, not tak ing anything away. Ms. Weston neglected to ap prise herself of current documentation, so perhaps next time she’ll verify her facts before she voices her unfounded complaints. In the meantime, there’s always the alternative of pay ing $3.00/page for typewritten quality and using the nearest XEROX copy machine instead. Sincerely, P ro g ra m m in g

Nicola Richards C o n s u lta n t

P.S. On your suggestion, Ms. Weston, to make the system more efficient, we verified our ac counting system and discovered that the fixed handling charge needed to be adjusted from $1.25 to $1.40. Perhaps your complaints were in deed justified after all — you couldn’t rationalize spending that extra 15 cents!

is a U2 Physiology student I feel that I m capable of voicing the needs and prototing the interests of science students at icGill. I am very willing to dedicate my Ffort and time to represent science udents effectively.

Hi everybody! I’m a U2 Math-Physics student running for ASUS Science Representative, and I’d like you to con sider voting for me. Why? Well, I’m fair ly involved, interested in the job, and, while I can’t promise to be the best science rep ever, I can promise to be one of the hardest working. Thanks for your time.

EXPERIENCE 1984-85 — Vice-President Science ASUS 1984 — Co-chairman McGill Blood Drive 1983 — Publicity Director - McGill Blood Drive I feel that my involvement in student ac tivities at McGill gives me the experience necessary to provide strong representation for science students on both ASUS and Student Council.

OALS: increase student awareness of function of ASUS and Student ouncil encourage participation in respective science departments insure financial resources are used to benefit science students recognize and act upon complaints and suggestions of science udents

te can hardly propose a set of goals for e position of secretary, however, the sition carries a vote like any other, in th the ASUS and its executive. It is this ting priviledge which is of prime impor tée when you consider who to cast your te for. My extensive experience in stu nt government both in CEGEP and at _________________ :Gill should be a great asset in allowing me to represent the inest o f the student body.

The position o f Arts Member-at-Large is a broad one in that it has no specific responsibilites. If elected, I would involve myself heavily in committee work. I feel confident that experience which I have gained in committee work as well as through extensive participation in campus activities will enable me to represent the student body effectively.

L o m e C a p la n

To be an Arts or Science student is in my eyes, a truly good chance to experience McGill. I have taken advantage of our sporting facility, intermural and instruc tional (Hockey (B), Karate, Football), and I am a member of the Ski Team. As well from 83-84 a member of MCSA and the Arts Representative for the MIAC. I hope to instill incentive to participate in our student body.

objectives will be to create a smooth ning atmosphere in which all members effeciently carry out their responlities. : experience that I have gathered — member of several commit; and councils — will help me achieve these priorities.

Beginning my campaign, I was surprised by the number o f students who knew nothing about the ASUS. I’d like to expand the student’s knowledge of the ASUS. As I’m in residence, I’m on campus almost all day for questions and ideas. I’d also like to print a guide that presents the students views on all the Arts and Science courses.

I am running for the position of Memberat-Large of the ASUS because I feel that I have experience working in student governm ents th at can benefit the organization of events which in turn will improve the life of other students. I was the Vice-President Internal of the Dawson Students’ Association in 1983-84. __________________ I was also an editor of the Plant, the student newspaper, in 1982-83 and a member of the Canadian University Press — Quebec ex ecutive council. I am presently a student representative on the Arts faculty Scholarship Committee and enrolled in Joint Honours Political Science and Russian.

ving been Anatomy President for the r 1984-85, I have become accustomed vhat students expect of a student body h as the ASUS. I believe a greater emsis should be put on integrating the ly departments of the Science Faculty, especially those less well represented lumbers such as Meteorology and my la Mater, Anatomy. Perfectly bilingual, I was also Science resentative in the Women’s Intramural Council.

The ASUS is just the thing McGill needs to make student life more enjoyable and worthwhile. With the right enthusiastic people working together — and in touch with the needs of undergrads — McGill will be a meaningful academic and social experience. Thank-you for your support.
