onsider: stone. What exactly is it about stone we find so enrapturing? There is no other natural element that propels the imagination in such histrionic directions. And there is certainly no other material to which we habitually return to express our very humbled, human orientation in the natural world. Stone is romantic. Stone is elegiac. Perhaps it’s because stone cannot but help to remind us of our fleeting ephemerality. As the physical manifestation of centuries, shaped by time’s passing, the ravages of wind and rain, stone is the microcosm of our world: expressing our dreams for duration, and our fears of transience.

In this context of multivalence, eight of Australia’s leading product designers have turned to the material of stone to reinterpret it anew. Partnering with Artedomus, this inaugural collection – New Volumes, Collection 01 – brings together the work of Thomas Coward, Ross Gardam, Dale Hardiman, Marsha Golemac, Nick Rennie, Sarah King, Tom Skeehan and Emma Elizabeth. Hitting the design scene in Melbourne last month for Denfair, New Volumes presents an intriguing glimpse at the future of the home and office – one in which stone is front and centre. Commonly relegated to bathrooms, kitchens and the occasional outdoor setting, stone’s everincreasing popularity in recent years has resulted in something of a banner decade. It certainly is an exciting time to be working with this material and, to this end, New Volumes pushes the boundaries of what it’s like for a designer to work with a single material.



“For thousands of years, marble and stone have been used as a symbol of luxury and our dominance of the natural world. We use it in sculpture to immortalise figures, leaders and heroes, and in architecture to build monuments, shrines and pillars of grandeur.” – Thomas Coward, Creative Director.



“Our story”, says Artedomus’ managing director, Phil Brenton, “begins here and stems from our travels and connections across the globe, through which we identified an untapped volume of story and space.” “New Volumes”, he continues, “was the idea borne out of this void and has become a way for us to express ourselves through people, design, materiality and, of course, their stories” This twelve–piece collection reinterprets Elba, “a rich and complex stone 250 million years in the making,” to reach entirely new limits. Even though this is undoubtedly furniture like we’ve never seen before, there is, nonetheless, still something ancient about each piece too. Using the same material as Classical Greece’s famed stonemasons and sculptors, New Volumes is a collection of modern artefacts. According to creative director, Thomas Coward: “For thousands of years, marble and stone have been used as a symbol of luxury and our dominance of the natural world. At home, we walk on it, we prepare food on it and we bathe in it.
