f you happen to be a bit of a design nerd, then I imagine you’ve spent the year so far waiting for Axyl to arrive on our shores. Since the London Design Festival last year we’ve been kept in hysterical anticipation to finally have the chance to lay eyes upon the chair that apparently has all of Europe captivated. In fact, it would almost be difficult to overstate this point. Since Benjamin Hubert – the British industrial designer and founder of the agency, Layer – launched Axyl on the market, its name has been popping up everywhere: in design magazines across the world, in a very sleek video, punctuating any number of design and architecture websites. Having finally arrived in Australia thanks to Zenith, Australians are now enjoying the opportunity to experience one of the most exciting furniture designs on the contemporary

When Hubert sought to create a range of contemporary, flexible, robust and environmentally conscious furniture with a sleek international feel he turned his hand toward recycled and reclaimed materials that, together, amount to far more than the sum of their parts. We caught up with the designer in London to learn more about how Axyl is being received downunder. It’s been said that Axyl has a very international feel. What do you think is meant by that? Hubert: I think that it means that there is something about Axyl that isn’t driven by a culture from a single part of the world. Axyl carries a pretty broad, modernist and relatively accessible language. It’s simple, minimal, and it’s something that we wanted to have a universal appeal. To me it seems that Axyl references all manner of different moments in design history – and certainly from around the world. Was that an important aspect of the design process for you? Most of our work at Layer follows a pretty modernist train of thought really, like
reductionism, simplicity and all the kinds of things that are the mainstay of what I believe to be good industrial design. But I think that this chair particularly, carries a lot of cues from mid-century, Scandinavian forms. So the wrap-around shell was something that was really defined in Europe during the 1950s-1960s (particularly in Denmark), but it’s a language that has become popular again – and all over the world. We were keen to utilise some of that and but then give it a twist of producing it in a more interesting material and combining it with a more interesting architectural frame work. It’s the idea of familiar yet new. For me that’s a balance which I think can bring a lot of success and it means that a product that can be used in a lot of different projects from homes to offices, restaurants and beyond. Surely that flexibility is something that adds to the very strong reception that Axyl has received and is continuing to receive here now in Australia. What has that been like? Absolutely. It’s enjoyed a really great reception from the design community and from a design point of view. It’s picked up and picking up a lot of design awards – so, that’s nice and reassuring

because it is my peers and colleagues that are judging these programs and ultimately really respect our opinions.
Time is a difficult thing to quantify but we wanted to ensure that Axyl is something that people would like to live with for a long time.
Now it’s also going into quite a few projects too. We always designed this to have commercial appeal and it was never supposed to be just a design study for its own sake. And I think it’s always interesting to see it in lots of contexts. So you can imagine that we are pretty happy!
I know that Axyl is a range of a chair, stool and table configuration, but I wanted to find out how the original idea for the collection started.
Well one of the aspects that inspires me most is the fact that Axyl takes sustainability to a very advanced level. Was the environmentallyconscious aspect of the range something that was very important to you from the beginning? For me, it is always important to be responsible in the design projects that I work on (whether it’s the efficiency of the material or whether it’s something that’s long lasting, can be recycled, or from a recycled material). Allermuir – the company we worked with to manufacture the chair – was interested in the idea of something being very robust, long lasting. For both of us, sustainability is a holistic subject, and we wanted to integrate several ecologically responsible elements into our approach to achieve that outcome. We were constantly testing ourselves and asking questions like ‘just how far can we push the long lasting aspect?’
Well for me it was very much about setting a kind of café scene. I think the chair obviously touches upon that in a very strong way – but is still equally at home in a residential setting too. We quickly realised that the language we formed for the chair would look great in a stool too. The table was the next stage of that development – and once you have a table you start to think of making a larger one too! [Laughs]. We’re excited to be developing new family members for Axyl that will be coming out next year. One of Axyl’s best assets is that it really isn’t constraining in this sense. We hope lots of people and even different sectors and spaces will be attuned to like it, because it is distinctive, but it is fairly simple as well. Axyl is available throughout Australia via Zenith.
