ight hundred kilometres. That was the whopping total distance covered by riders in The Steve Waugh Foundation’s 2017 Captain’s Ride as they wound their way through the scenic backstreets and hinterlands of Tasmania. Over six gruelling days of highs and lows, a team of sixty-five handpicked riders from around the world cycled across Australia’s smallest state to raise much-needed funds and awareness for Australia’s only dedicated Foundation for children and young adults affected by rare diseases. This year, The Captain’s Ride is back and bigger than ever, bringing together seventy avid cyclists from around the world to rally for the cause and put rare diseases well and truly ‘on the map’.

Since 2006, The Steve Waugh Foundation has been the primary pillar of support for children and young adults affected by rare diseases. The number of such children and young adults is perhaps more than most would expect: data shows that of the one in ten Australians – roughly two and a half million in total – affected by a rare disease, over four hundred thousand are children. Through a comprehensive program of grants, respite camps, and awareness raising, the Foundation has to date supported over 1600 such young people and their families and been instrumental in advancing national abilities to manage rare diseases. Yet there is still more to be done. This year, seventy riders will participate in The Captain’s Ride, embarking on a six-day road tour of Victoria that is specifically mapped to enable a challenging, life-changing experience. Departing Healesville, Victoria on 29 October, the 2018 Ride will take cyclists through the leafy back roads of Bright, the former gold mining town of Harrietville, and the picturesque Falls Creek, before finishing up in Albury, NSW on 3 November. Along the way, the team is expected to raise not only awareness and funds, but also – critically – the spirits of those affected by rare diseases, and their families.

Amongst the riders will be two of McGrath’s very own: CEO Geoff Lucas and auctioneer Max Wylie, who has the additional distinction of being the youngest member on the team. Following a successful run in the 2017 event, Geoff and Max are excited to return to this year’s event and conquer a new, equally challenging course. “The Steve Waugh Foundation is one of the most worthy charities I have ever been involved with,” says Geoff. “We are privileged this year to ride again and the pain and discomfort we will endure cannot possibly compare to what these families face every day.” Other cyclists in this year’s The Captain’s Ride team include two-time Brownlow Medallist and four-time All-Australian AFL Champion Adam Goodes, six-time gold medallist and Australia’s most successful Winter Games Paralympian Michael Milton OAM, and Steve Waugh himself.
