hey don’t call California the Golden State for nothing. Bathed in warm sunlight that seemingly never ends, the USA’s most populous state is the breezy, bronzed backdrop of many a holiday snap and glowing memory: technicolour sunrises on the beach, sunny afternoons strutting down palm tree-lined avenues, and hazy halcyon days in the midst of deserts that stretch on for miles. Few Californian cities are closer to this image than Palm Springs, which – true to its name – abounds in two California signatures: hot springs and palm tress.

To many the name Palm Springs is synonymous with visions tinted with the golden light of nostalgia, in which chic mid-century design, kidney-shaped pools in azure blue, and luxury vintage cars arrange themselves against blue skies and striking rock formations. For years the city has been portrayed as a haven for Modernist design and glamorous desert playground for the stylish creative class. For Australian photographer Kate Ballis, arriving in Palm Springs for February 2017’s Modernism Week, this iconography had become somewhat tired. A seasoned travel and lifestyle photographer, Ballis felt that the stereotypical framing of the city as a hotbed of retro, offbeat luxury was ‘ordinary’. In keeping with her almost uncanny ability to reveal the true character of a place through thoughtful photography, she immediately begun investigating ways to shoot Palm Springs that were new, fresh, and extraordinary.
In a side step from her crisp realist images of destinations including Hong Kong, Portugal, Belize, and Cuba, Ballis decided to shoot Palm Springs in a truly different light: infrared. Converting a Sony digital camera into full spectrum using infrared filters, Ballis set about photographing the city in a way unlike any other before her. The resulting series, under the moniker Infra Realism, is vivid and arresting, doused in bright shades of pink, purple, and scarlet. The lush foliage of palm trees and desert growth is recast as lilac clouds that bloom forth against skies of cherry red, and concrete takes on a glowing fuchsia hue that is at once timeless and contemporary. In one image the chrome of a classic car is tinted in a decidedly millennial pink, while in another a prefabricated fibreglass house by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen perches, glowing, above a mound of rock like the galaxy’s most stylish spaceship.

Though the subjects of Infra Realism are diverse and range from barren dessert landscapes to backyard pools, architecture, and hotel signage, the series is united by an intoxicating vitality and sense of warmth. As much is starkly apparent in a new, eponymous coffee table book published by Manuscript Publishing. Bringing together more than 100 infrared photographs in 160 pages and bound in luxurious hardback, Infra Realism breathes new life into some of Palm Springs’ most iconic landscapes. Joshua Tree, Sedona, and the Atacama Desert all get the infrared treatment, as does Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House and the Instagram-favourite Ace Hotel. Both a photographer and a storyteller, Ballis captures Palm Springs in a manner that delights and challenges the viewer’s preconceptions of the city. Distorting familiar images just enough to give the viewer pause, the cotton candytinted photographs in Infra Realism have the air of a dream: a stunning, magical dream in which everything is bright, verdant, and gorgeous.
