In the rich tapestry of Australian agriculture, few stories are as compelling as the rise of Angus cattle from humble beginnings in Tasmania to their dominant position in the nation’s beef industry. As Australia prepares to host the World Angus Forum, it’s a fitting time to reflect on this remarkable journey.
“The Angus breed has become the cornerstone of Australia’s beef industry, representing both our heritage and our future,” says Sinclair Munro, President of Angus Australia.
“From those first eight Angus cattle that arrived at Hobart Town docks in 1824, we’ve built a legacy that now leads the world in genetic advancement and sustainable beef production.”
Those pioneering cattle, brought to Captain Patrick Wood’s Dennistoun property near Bothwell, marked the beginning of a genetic lineage that continues today. The Edgell family’s Dennistoun Angus herd stands as a living testament to this history, maintaining the distinction of being Australia’s oldest continuously running Angus operation.
The breed’s expansion across the mainland gained momentum in the 1880s, with the establishment of significant studs like William Hogarth’s Balgownie station near Toowoomba and the influential Edinglassie stud at Muswellbrook, founded by JC White and FJ White. The formation of the Angus Society in 1919 proved a crucial turning point, unifying breeders and establishing the first Australian herd book in 1922.
Now, as the breed faces modern challenges, Australia is set to showcase its world-leading Angus genetics and sustainable farming practices during the 2025 World Angus Forum. The eight-day AngusTREK tour, preceding the forum, will take international delegates through New South Wales’ premier Angus operations, including the historic Millah Murrah Angus, known for repeatedly breaking national bull sale records since 2011.
“The tour highlights how far we’ve come,” Munro explains. “Visitors will see everything from boutique paddock-to-plate operations like Sunny Point Pastoral Co, to large-scale commercial enterprises like Rangers Valley Feedlot, demonstrating the versatility and adaptability of the breed.”
The forum in Brisbane at the culmination of the tour will address crucial industry challenges, including the Australian beef industry’s ambitious Carbon Neutral 2030 target. Leading experts, including Professor Ben Hayes from the University of Queensland, will present cutting-edge research on genomic selection for heat tolerance, demonstrating how the breed continues to adapt to Australia’s harsh climate conditions.
From those first Angus cattle on Tasmanian shores to today’s technologically advanced breeding programs, the Angus journey reflects the innovation and resilience of Australian agriculture. As the world’s Angus community prepares to converge on Brisbane, it’s clear that the breed’s influence on global beef production is stronger than ever.
The 2025 World Angus Forum including AngusTREK runs from April 29 to May 6. For many international visitors travelling from the United States to the United Kingdom, it will be their chance to see how Australian Angus breeders have adapted world-leading genetics to some of the planet’s most challenging environments, while maintaining the breed’s renowned meat quality and performance.
Maybe you’re dreaming of farm-fresh eggs, undulating hills dotted with black cattle, or just space to breathe. Before you trade your city apartment for a patch of rural property, there’s some essential homework that could save you from costly missteps. Here’s your cheat sheet to buying smarter.
Every property has its backstory and you’ll be wise to dig into the property’s past. Request a Local Land Services search which could reveal everything from unpaid rates to disease history that could affect your plans or cattle dips that could be hiding chemical contaminants.
If you’re thinking of running livestock, you’ll need more than just a paddock and good intentions. Run the numbers on everything from fencing to feed. Remember, Instagram-worthy farm life requires real-world infrastructure.
And by neighbours, we mean everything from the friendly fifth generation farmer to the local wildlife and the owners of that quarry just over the hill. Is there a threatened species calling your future backyard home? Are there mining operations nearby that might share their dust with your vegetable garden and clothesline?
You can see yourself building a charming farmhouse but does the zoning allow it? Check if the property has a dwelling entitlement (fancy talk for ‘yes, you can build a house here’). Nothing kills the dream faster than discovering your perfect plot is zoned in a way that makes your plans impossible.
Water is liquid gold in the country, and not all properties are created equal. Know the property’s water rights inside and out. Can you sink a bore? Build a dam? And what about those weeds that are eyeing your pastures with evil intent? A property’s water situation and weed status can make or break your rural dreams.
A humble native plant is seldom a global sensation. Yet that’s exactly what’s happened with the macadamia, Australia’s gift to the gourmet world and the only native food crop we’ve successfully launched onto the international stage.
“Australia is the premium market supplier to Taiwan, Japan, Korea and even China,” explains Bill Johnston, McGrath Rural’s macadamia land sales specialist who’s watched the industry transform over the years. “Those markets view us as clean and green, thanks to high levels of regulation.”
He’s not wrong - Australian nuts haven’t shown a trace of pesticides in export testing for over two decades. From the lush volcanic soils of the Alstonville Plateau to the sprawling orchards of Central Queensland, these
ivory-kerneled nuts are attracting an intriguingly diverse crowd.
“Australia has traditionally been the world’s largest producer of macadamias, with a substantial portion of its output coming from the Northern Rivers region and a growing interest from corporates and foreign investment - seeking future asset growth and cashflow - into large scale plantings in Bundaberg and stretching up to Rockhampton,” Bill explains. South Africa is seeking to shake that
up: they’re now the biggest supplier in the world with 50,000 hectares reportedly planted.
“The Alstonville Plateau is renowned for its rich volcanic soils and subtropical climate,” Johnston notes. “It’s ideal for cultivating macadamias.”
This natural advantage has drawn everyone from international pension funds to ambitious tree-changers. Even Olympic gold medalist Giaan Rooney has joined the ranks of
macadamia farmers, trading her swimming medals for harvesting equipment - and finding unexpected success in the transition.
Take a drive through the Northern Rivers region and you’ll spot some creative ventures that go well beyond traditional farming. At Cape Byron Distillery, what was once a tired dairy farm has been transformed into a thriving orchard where macadamias meet craft spirits. The distillery’s latest creation? A world-first macadamia liqueur-cask whisky that sells for $150 a bottle.
Then there’s the story of Waliz Nuts, where Liz and Paul Hudson have turned their Newrybar farm into a gourmet powerhouse, crafting gluten-free nut bars that are finding
their way into stores across Australia and beyond.
“In this part of the world, 70 percent of the farmland is dedicated to macadamia orchards,” Johnston points out. But it’s not all boutique operations. The industry has caught the eye of serious money, with major investment firms pouring hundreds of millions into macadamia orchards. The Rural Funds Group alone manages nearly 4,000 hectares of macadamia property assets worth over $300 million.
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Weather events and market swings keep growers on their toes, and with entry-level orchards starting at $1.5 million, it’s not a commodity for the uncommitted. Yet the industry keeps growing, with
over 700 growers across three states producing around 50,000 tonnes annually. Seventy percent of these nuts make their way overseas, feeding a global appetite that shows no signs of slowing.
Recent harvests have shown promising signs, with improvements in kernel quality and size despite challenging weather conditions. As new orchards mature and begin bearing fruit, industry experts are cautiously optimistic about what lies ahead for Australia’s golden nut.
For those who’ve taken the plunge, whether they’re institutional investors or Olympic champions turned farmers, the macadamia story continues to prove that sometimes the sweetest rewards come in the hardest shells.
