me and amber Best friends, me and amber prove that all you need is love to create beautiful gifts and homewares.

Flick through any home decorator magazine and you will no doubt come across distinct me and amber objects gracing the lounge rooms and walls of stylish on-trend abodes. From bold statement linen tea towels declaring that “all you need is love,� to a range of artworks hand screenprinted on ply, these are lovingly designed by best friends, Karen Enis and Amber Molnar. Practically joined at the hip, Karen and Amber have a special friendship

that started in kindergarten and has stayed ever true. They studied graphic design at the University of Technology Sydney while working in the same pub and travelled overseas together ... and somehow managed to not get on each other’s nerves.

During their final year at uni, Karen and Amber had the opportunity to collaborate on their major project. They turned quite a stressful moment in their lives into something fun and rewarding, which got them thinking

“We get real pleasure out of creating things that people actually want to buy for a gift, or put in their home to change a space and create a mood.” “me and amber started small and has continued to grow slowly and organically over the years. We were fortunate enough to have the support of a number of established Sydney stockists (like Funkis and Published Art) from the very beginning,” says Amber. “We’ve never had the financial means to do any formal advertising, or paid publicity, however, we’ve been incredibly lucky

to be included in a number of our favourite magazines, featured in the Sydney Design Guide as well as several blogs.” me and amber products are widely stocked in shops right around Australia, including top3 by design and their online shop. “Our greeting cards were the first product in our range. Funnily enough, despite expanding our range quite a lot since then (linen tea towels, cushions, table runners, bean bags, wall art), greeting cards are still the core of our business.” When asked what they love about their products and how they manage to come up with new and fresh designs, the answer is simple for these two lovely creatives. “We get real pleasure out of creating things that people actually want to 6

buy for a gift, or put in their home,” says Karen. “We really love that a product is tactile, can reflect personality, and has the ability to change a space and create a mood.” Conscious of the environment and avid supporters of local business and industry, everything is produced locally. Utilising recycled papers and linen, which is durable and produced using less water than cotton, does prove more expensive, but it fits naturally with their ethos. A second element of me and amber is graphic design services. “Sometimes people who purchased our products would get in touch about graphic design and invitation work. We love how our product range has opened us up to the public in a way that we never would have been able to otherwise. Word of mouth has also got us a lot of our design work, including creating


200 individual handmade vintage rock themed invitations for a Levi’s fashion launch.� Planning for the future, Karen and Amber are continuing to expand their range and develop new products. Next is to design their own range of t-shirts and to focus more on the invitations (in particular wedding invitations) and the graphic design side of their business. Armed with paper, scissors and love, Karen and Amber continue the tradition instilled by their mums that creating something personal and unique, with a huge amount of effort and attention to detail makes everyone feel incredibly special. meandamber.com
