Dressed for success The Australian cricket team gets set for Ashes success in suits woven from the wool of sheep grazed on SCG grass. If ever the Australian cricket team was in need of inspiration, this is the moment. Since winning every Ashes series played against England throughout the 1990s, the Australian squad has floundered and is now, for the first time in 16 years, in danger of allowing its arch rival to tie the overall tally of wins achieved since the series began in 1882. The British press recently went so far as to dub our newly announced team Australia’s “worst Ashes squad” but, pointing to parallel dismissals of the now-legendary line up that went on to achieve great things in the ‘90s, many remain hopeful that we are about to experience a similar renaissance of Australia’s dominance in the sport. And the players and commentators aren’t the only ones drawing inspiration from Australia’s rich cricketing history. Menswear label M.J. Bale, which is the official clothier of the team, has been working away for the past year on a unique project to ensure our side is at least dressed for a successful campaign at this year’s series, which begins in England in July. It all began with a plug of turf taken in March last year from the hallowed Sydney Cricket Ground, a site that could lay a plausible claim to having witnessed more great Australian cricketing moments than any other. “I mean, we know that good grass grows good wool, we’ve been doing it for a long time, but we didn’t really think that grass from the SCG could be that much better.” sent that grass sample to superfine merino wool grower Bill Mitchell, who replanted it on his Armidale farm. Starting with an area of around 10sqm and using a process called vegetative propagation, Mitchell carefully cultivated and expanded the plug of turf until an exact replica of the grass found in the SCG covered an entire paddock. A flock of sheep were then grazed on this “grass of

greatness” and M.J. Bale is now in the process of turning the wool shorn from these sheep into suits for the Australian cricket team. Speaking on a short film documenting the project, Mitchell admits that he was initially “a bit sceptical” about the idea. “I mean, we know that good grass grows good wool, we’ve been doing it for a long time, but we didn’t really think that grass from the SCG could be that much better,” he says. But just over a year later the proof is in the suiting and Susie Thompson, the sales and marketing director for M.J. Bale, says everyone has been pleased with the results. “The sheep were shorn in January and our farmer, Bill Mitchell, said the elasticity in the wool was second to none and the durability was great as well,” she says. “He knows his stuff and he was really happy.” 6

In addition to providing suits for the entire cricket team, enough wool was produced to create around 100 additional suits, which will be made available to the public as a limited edition in September or October this year. Thompson says that the campaign – which was conceived by creative agency Whybins Sydney and won a raft of accolades including six awards at the 59th Cannes Lions, the international advertising industry’s equivalent of the Oscars – has generated a lot of interest and coincided with the opening of two new M.J. Bale stores, one in Perth and one in Melbourne, to supplement the five in Sydney. “The expansion of M.J. Bale in the last 12 months has been huge,” she says, adding that the label is also stocked in David Jones department stores nationwide. “People come


to us because we’re a brand that represents affordable luxury.” She adds that the idea behind the campaign nicely ties together a lot of the label’s core qualities including its proud Australian heritage, dedication to high quality raw materials, and obsession with design, comfort and – ultimately – performance. In the promotional film, star player Shane Watson tries on one of the suits and is asked how it feels to be dressed in clothes “threaded with victory”. “It feels great,” he responds. “I feel like a winner.” Let’s hope he’s right. mjbale.com
