hink: Prosecco by the Arno; Marcello Mastroianni on a cream Vespa; pearlescent vongole swimming in linguine brine; the tanned alta moda dripping in Capucci; think all things bella – all things quintessentially Italian. Now, think: snow on ski slopes as soft as infant down; wafts of cinnamon and clove billowing down cobbled lanes; molten chocolate smooth as suede; blonde girls with tightly plaited braids; and church steeples punctuating the horizon – all things quintessentially Nordic. Different worlds. Or, so we thought.

You see, two Aprils ago, the entire design world flocked to Milan for the world’s biggest design fair: Salone Del Mobile. And while this migration happens every year without fail, there was something significant about 2015. A local Milanese brand – Sipa – exhibited their latest range of fine furnishings, making something of a splash for design-hunters worldwide for finally uniting traditional Italian craftsmanship with superlative Nordic aesthetics. Two years later, Sipa is conquering Australian shores, and I find myself sitting across a table from Sipa’s Matteo Chiappo at an obscure Sydney café. 4

“Really, at its core, we care about two things: telling a story through design – of the natural timbers, of the region – and telling the story of the local community who manufacture every piece”, Matteo tells me. For the next two hours, he takes me through innumerable stories of the families that work in the factory, the story of the family behind the brand, and the stories of the designs themselves.

Picking up a bentwood stool from the front of the café, Matteo turns it upside down and runs his hand along a perfect hoop that connects the legs at the base. “At Sipa, there is one table with a similar hoop to this one – and I had to travel around the country to find a craftsman who could make this shape from an unbroken piece of timber”.

Captivated by such a richness of local detail and narrative, a throwaway name in Italian captures my attention: “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica

Eventually, Matteo found himself at one Italian studio that could do the job – that had, in fact, been doing that same job for generations. Unbeknownst to him, he’d been speaking with the same man who had turned raw timber into the world-renowned steering wheels of Alfa Romeo cars for years. Using the very same machine to produce the support hoop for Sipa’s table (pictured), this micro-history of Italian craftsmanship astounded me.

With an eye to modern living trends and an expertise for working with solid wood, Sipa’s furniture collection blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary values. Always with an eye to preserving the matchless prowess of disappearing crafts, the brand left an impression at Salone del Mobile in 2015 for also championing the values of simplicity, modesty and functionality central to the design cultures of Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark.

Everyone deserves good design – that’s important”. Sipping coffee, I almost choke as Matteo – caught by a breeze of enthusiasm – bursts forth that “this is furniture that’s alive!”. My splutters aside, he’s certainly not wrong. From the wood which breathes and bends between seasons to morph throughout the years, all the way through to those inimitable histories of the Italian people – their craft, their stories – which stand at the heart of each piece, here is an example of design truly keeping communities alive. “See, it’s more than just furniture. It’s what we do and who we are. It’s what we care about”.
