A dog’s life Assistance Dogs Australia is developing a new programme and producing positive results in the classroom. For two-year-old Labrador Benson, the working day starts at eight am when the alarm goes off in the Shellharbour home of his handlers Ryan Olender and Angela Bennett. Then it’s off to work at Lake Illawarra High School where he greets staff in the teachers’ room, checks his bed in the corner and is assigned a classroom for his first period - after a few treats, of course. The playground is filled with smiling faces of students who gleefully touch,
pet and hug Benson as he passes. He then takes his place in the classroom where he performs a few tricks, lies around or is just on hand to be adored and create a calming environment for the students. But this is not fun and games; this is what he’s trained to do. He’s at work and he knows it. The school has a support unit for kids with special needs and behavioural problems and head teacher Martin Moore has been heavily involved in 5
the application and interview process with Assistance Dogs Australia to implement this new concept. “This is the first of its kind in the country,” Moore says, adding that Benson is the only assistance dog in Australia that has been placed in a school. Benson is classed as a facility dog and provides the school with a new learning tool to help students with difficulties in communication and concentration. produced some impressive results. “We have documented evidence of improvements in attendance and negative incidents with the students,” says Moore. “In fact, negative incidents such as fighting, bullying and misbehaving have been reduced from 29 to just three in the same five week period from last year to this year.” Truancy was also a major issue at Lake Illawarra High but even that has dramatically reduced since Benson
has taken up residence. “Some of these kids are in pretty desperate circumstances and have experienced some major trauma in their lives,” Moore explains. “Many of them come to school purely because Benson is here. They might only see him for half an hour, but that’s enough to get them to come.” Assistance Dogs Australia is a national charity that mainly trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to perform everyday tasks for people with disabilities or special needs. Each assistance dog takes two years to train and requires an investment of over $27,000. There is no government funding so money is raised through private donations and corporate sponsorship. In fact, Benson’s ongoing support is sponsored by McGrath Kiama while his initial training was funded by Westpac.

Assistance dogs are trained to fulfil three different categories; service dogs, companion dogs and, in the case of Benson, facility dogs. Each has a unique role to perform and is taught to offer the best help they can in their designated situation. For primary carer and teacher in the school’s support unit, Ryan Olender, the programme has been life changing. “Benson is now a part of our family,” he says. “At home he knows he’s not at work so is a bit less switched-on and more relaxed.” Olender is also responsible for the dog’s ongoing training, which is vital for a facility animal’s success. He also admits to benefitting greatly from having such a highly skilled therapy hound in the home. “Assistance Dogs provides ongoing training that requires us handlers to continue to update our training skills,” he says. “They rely purely on
private funds and are always in need of donations or sponsorship.” After a few naps in the staff room and another special appearance in the ED (emotionally disturbed) student’s classroom, it’s time for Benson to punch out for the day. For a breed that generally needs 18 hours sleep a day, he’s done overtime and will no doubt sleep like a dog. assistancedogs.org.au
