Marrickville meets Mediterranean The product of travel, family and experience, West Juliett is serving up a new style of café culture that is inspired and full of flavour. West Juliett was an empty space for more than 50 years before it became Marrickville’s newest and hippest café. The owners John and Kathryn Stavropoulos’s vision is built on passion for fresh produce and inspired by a yearlong getaway where they visited the heart of Spain, France, Greece and the Middle East with their two children in-tow. They have created a Mediterranean café and broadened its scope by injecting a sense of adventure and discovery on each and every plate. This sizeable project began as a café before continuing to take shape into a multi-level establishment complete with an adjoining dining room equipped for cooking classes and special functions. “We wanted to express our own personal growth. We had learned things from travelling, we had been inspired,” John explains. As you walk in the door you are met with the warmth and ruggedness of timber finishes and minimalist aesthetic across a voluminous open space. This welcoming design perfectly compliments an easy-to-read menu that feels like home. West Juliett is fast becoming a household name among its close-knit community where a personal approach never goes unnoticed. This industry-known duo already had a wealth of experience, having successfully run Café Zoe in Surry Hills for a total of nine years. Seeking 5

As they walked the Camino de Santiago trail and sampled a rich and varied smorgasbord of Mediterranean flavours, they reinvigorated their passion for food. This prominent corner eatery marks a new beginning that embodies John and Kathryn’s newfound appreciation for simplicity while striking a balance between traditional influences and new modern direction.
West Juliett is much more than a great cup of coffee. The hearty food selection showcases a healthy blend of colours, variety of textures and juicy flavours. John has presented this range of inspired tastes without any loud embellishments to detract from the quality of the produce. Each element to the dish can be noticed and embraced instead of being hidden behind an elaborate range of condiments. Just as the interiors incorporate the building’s origins, the menu is guided by the provenance of its ingredients. John describes their menu approach as “produce-driven” with an emphasis on obtaining high quality ingredients. The coffee is seasonal and locally roasted; the beef is grass-fed; the fruit and vegetables are hand selected at local markets, and many staple ingredients are delivered directly from the farm. The menu entices the palette with its bold Mediterranean flair and 6
trusted breakfast or lunchtime dishes. Artisan cheeses and burnt onion feature alongside salted caramel, pear mostarda and morcilla (a spiced Spanish sausage). Popular dishes on the breakfast menu include the poached eggs with avocado, feta and dukkah, as well as the olive oil fried eggs with braised lentils. For lunch, we are not surprised that the grass fed burger is a crowd-pleaser with its homemade pickles and beetroot relish. Along with their staff, John and Kathryn are devoted to maintaining an inviting and friendly atmosphere. Overwhelmed by displays of hospitality and generosity abroad, the pair left inspired to cultivate their existing community spirit. Kathryn believes that “ultimately, a café needs to be a part of its community, a place where you rub shoulders with your neighbours.” They are currently busy with plans to use the adjoining building as a venue
for all sorts of community-based activities and are envisaging monthly dinners that will celebrate and explore the diversity of regional Greek cooking as well as guest Chef appearances. The Inner West is undoubtedly the home of cafĂŠ culture, with new venues popping up almost weekly, yet rarely is a concept conceived and executed as elegantly or as comprehensively as West Juliett.
