Brains trust Neuroscience Research Australia is an innovative new medical institute dedicated to decoding the mysteries of the mind to help cope with an aging Australia. “How does a memory get formed and retained?” ponders Professor Peter Schofield. “Physically, how and where does this happen? We don’t know.” As Executive Director and CEO of Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) Schofield knows a lot about the brain yet this is just one of the many conundrums he and several hundred researchers work hard to resolve. “We know a lot about the circuits involved. We know how communication between neurons works but we don’t actually know where the memory gets stored,” he continues. “That’s part of the challenge to understand how we lose our memory in dementia.” Schofield and his team form one of the largest medical research institutes in the country with 260 researchers specialising in the study of the brain and nervous system. NeuRA is an independent not-for-profit organisation that is changing the face of research in neurological and psychiatric diseases. It is recognised for its groundbreaking work on Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other dementias, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and chronic pain. The state-of-the-art facility is housed in a striking architect designed building in Randwick that has won accolades for its innovative contemporary design, including the Randwick City 2013 Urban Design People’s Choice Award. Casual observers would be excused for 5

“It’s almost as if looking into the brain is like a cosmologist looking out at the stars; but looking in is much more complicated.” thinking this is a modern art museum or a Silicon Valley offshoot but in fact the complex has been expertly fitted out with cutting edge laboratory equipment, clinical observation rooms, specialised research facilities and even a trendy café. Schofield likens himself and his team to the visionary architects that designed the award winning building and admits that thinking outside

the square is an essential part of a neuroscience researcher’s day. “It’s almost as if looking into the brain is like a cosmologist looking out at the stars,” he says. “But looking in is much more complicated.” As medicine’s capacity to successfully treat and cure illnesses such as heart disease and cancer continues to improve, we enter a new phase in human history where people are living longer than ever before. “At the turn of the last century Australians lived to an average age of 50, we now live to an average age of 82. Basically, for every year that you live, you are going to live three months longer. That’s phenomenal.” What is truly phenomenal is the enormous contribution medical research has had on our average life expectancy. The development of vaccinations has effectively eradicated many life threatening diseases. The 6

invention of electricity and refrigeration means that we can now store food and negate the need to preserve it with salt. This lower amount of salt in our diet has significantly reduced the amount of hypertension and heart attacks. In fact, the NeuRA facility sits on the site of the former Randwick Chest Hospital – no longer required as chronic chest infections such as tuberculosis have been defeated and are virtually a thing of the past. Schofield acknowledges this means that neurodegenerative disease will now be the main cause of death and disability in our nation. “The reason we focus on neuroscience is because as a total burden of illness, it’s the largest condition that afflicts us,” he says. “The chances of developing dementia are still the same in your old age; it’s just that there are more of us at an older age so the number of people affected has dramatically increased.”


The increasing prevalence of dementia places a lot of importance on neuroscience research and it’s a responsibility that Professor Schofield takes very seriously. “We need to find a cure for Alzheimer’s,” he says. “We need to find a cure for schizophrenia. We need to better understand what impairs our balance and makes us fall over when we get older. We need to better understand all of this and do something about it. That’s what neuroscience research is for.” Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) is to be officially opened in July 2013. neura.edu.au
