Homecoming For most of her professional career, interior designer Anna-Carin McNamara looked for inspiration everywhere but in her past. Growing up in Forsa, a small rural village in the south of Sweden, AnnaCarin was eager to leave and see what the world outside had to offer. She left at 17 with big dreams and didn’t look back. After studying engineering and aspiring to be an architect, AnnaCarin quickly decided that she was attracted to the more intimate and personal scale of interior design. “Spaces, rooms and homes affect people in ways they’re often not even aware of,” she explains. “My job can sometimes be likened to that of a therapist, peeling the layers off to get to the core of what my clients really are searching for with their space.” Following stints working in Stockholm and completing a Master of Art at The Royal College of Art in London, Anna-Carin started out in Sydney running a retail store for Scandinavian items (the first to sell BabyBjörn in Sydney no less!). Since founding Anna Carin Design (ACD), she has built up a diverse and extensive list of both residential and commercial interior design clients over the past 15 years. When it comes to maximising the potential of a home, Anna-Carin feels there is no time like the present. “In Australia, people often procrastinate,” she says. “There’s an attitude of ‘oh, I’ll create my ideal home when the kids move out, or when I meet someone, or when I renovate, or when I have the money.’ People tend to put 3

it on hold. In Europe it’s different. There’s an understanding that if you have a certain quality to start with, that quality can be moulded and developed. My strong philosophy is that you can work with what you have, and that today is just as important as the day you buy your new property or the day you decide to renovate.”

In addition to her interior design work, this year will see the unveiling of The Forsa Collection for Designer Rugs, Anna-Carin’s first series of rugs. The collection came about following an invitation from Designer Rugs to last year’s Melbourne Cup. While on the trip, Anna-Carin experienced what she refers to as a “download” during her regular morning meditation. The designs arrived in her mind as fully formed images with narrative links directly to her childhood.

From eggs to fences, fish, wild strawberries and a storm that ravaged
in Nepal - a process that takes five months before the finished piece arrives in Australia. Rugs have been a lifelong passion for Anna-Carin and she feels that they provide an ideal starting point when 4
making over a room. “Rugs bring softness and colour to a space and they help with acoustics,” she says. “Like Josef Frank said, they should evoke a feeling of solid ground under your feet. You find a good rug and you have your base.” With the rug collection set to launch in November, Anna-Carin feels the most rewarding aspect of the project was the fresh perspective it has given her on her past. “I think the thing that’s most significant for me is that I’ve made peace with my upbringing and come full circle. I realised that my childhood gave me so much and for a long time I hadn’t acknowledged that. I’ve now come to be very appreciative of where I grew up; from how I eat to the way I look at nature and so much more. I am a country girl from the south of Sweden and I’ve gone on to other things, but ultimately that’s who I am,
