Getting crafty A stylist, author and self-proclaimed ‘house whisperer’, Megan Morton is a respected powerhouse of style and innovation and is now bringing her style to the people. Renowned in both industry circles and dinner table conversation, Morton has a highly acclaimed work history with her unique interiors informing the trends of style in Australia. Her work in interiors, fashion and advertising is splashed across Elle Decoration UK, Vanity Fair, Vogue Living, InStyle and Inside Out magazines. Her wealth of knowledge coupled with enormous generosity and compelling need for skill-sharing led to starting The School, a multi discipline creative space for people who want to learn to make stuff. The School shares a flexible studio space in Rosebery with homewares extraordinaire Koskela and Kitchen by Mike. Originally, inspiration for the school was born trying to find somewhere for her kids (Millie, Sebastian and Bea) to be creative. “It started out because I wanted a place for my children to come and do craft. None of them want to do craft, but luckily other people’s children do,” Morton says. So in addition to school holiday camps, birthday parties and other kids workshops like piñata making, it became evident that demand was not only for children, but for their parents and people of all ages. The School runs master classes in harnessing inspiration, decorating a kid’s room, the science of styling and styling a property for sale. Acknowledging the ‘minefield’ that is selling property, Morton offers a course to get your house presentable for the market. 3

The era may have passed when your grandmother taught you how to make stuff, so The School offers classes in crafts like basketry, calligraphy, crochet,
paper art, rosettes, screen printing and weaving. Megan has assembled experts in each field to come and share their knowledge - like Rachel Castle, Beattie Lanser, Georgia Parry and James Gordon.

Interior design and home styling is experiencing a DIY resurgence with the popularity of television series like The Block, Renovation Rescue and House Rules so The School has responded by offering a place where you can learn some tips without doing a whole interior design course. Megan sees the importance of putting your own individualised touches on your styling, and the courses at The School enable everyday people to develop skills to bring these to their own homes.
Social media has enabled people to create a sense of style on the internet with their online profiles, Facebook, blogs, Twitter and Instagram, rather than traditionally in interior design or fashion. The School has its finger on the technological pulse, providing classes where you can learn about Instagram, photography 101 and photoshop for beginners and bloggers. An Instagram addict, Morton has over 19,000 followers watching every move she makes @ megan_morton. Morton also organises ‘insta-meets’ where people connected on Instagram can meet up in real life, especially if they can’t attend one of the classes at The School. For this reason, insta-meets are also held in Hobart, Brisbane and Melbourne; which are also
