Heavy metal love Walking away from a successful career is always daunting but designer Alischa Herrmann believes in following your heart when it comes to finding your place in the world, even if it takes years.
“I love everything about letterpress; the feel, the smell, the sound, the history - everything!” says Alischa who instantly fell in love with the craft after stumbling across it on the internet. The more she researched the more she knew she had found her path away from the graphic design career that was leaving her increasingly stifled and creatively burnt-out. Alischa was determined to find a press, despite not having any concrete idea of what she would do with it, or any concept of how to operate it.
Proving it was more than a whim Alischa spent three years searching until a series of serendipitous events led her to an 800kg, 1893 Chandler & Price press and importantly to an elderly printer named Bob. Alischa learnt everything she could in her spare time over the next few years from Bob, who gladly took her through an ‘apprenticeship,’ similar to the one he had completed more than half a century earlier. Alischa says it was the challenge of learning a new craft that kept 3
her going through the years before finally establishing her business. “I’ve always loved working hard and even though I was pushed until I thought I was crazy, I felt anything this hard must be a good thing and meant I was on the right path.” The hard work has certainly paid off Alischa now has a complete family of three presses (named Charlie, Helga and Herbie) plus a huge, and rather chilling, guillotine sweetly named, Polly! in Sydney and Brisbane, Alischa has established a leading letterpress studio designing and printing couture letterpress for both Australian and international clientele. Entering Bespoke Letterpress’ brand new studio space in a beautifully renovated cottage on the NSW Southern Highlands you are immediately taken by the sheer heftiness of the presses lined up silently like heavy metal museum pieces. When Alischa brings them to life it’s clear why she loves her work. They are truly mesmerising
The magic really begins when Alischa smears the hand-mixed inks along the rollers and the luxurious thick cotton papers are transported by a whoosh of air into the press where plates emboss the design and transfer the ink before another arm gently swings away the finished papers.
Although Alischa seems a long way from her original career she explains there is a solid relationship between contemporary graphic design and traditional letterpress. “Many conventions, rules, some of the language and even the way some software programs are designed come from the era of letterpress. Obviously it’s very different from the time of type compositors but much of how they worked and the limitations of the machines they used forms the foundation of graphic design.”
“I can’t imagine buying a machine now and expecting it to work in one hundred years,” Alischa says, expressing her respect for a bygone era where things were built to last. “They are fragile now because the iron becomes more brittle with age but there is nothing delicate about them.“
Apart from loading the presses with rich red inks in preparation for the busy Christmas period, Alischa’s next big project will be the birth of her first baby. Ready as always for a challenge Alischa is realistic about the big arrival and the changes ahead. “It will be eye opening!” she laughs, explaining she has never

been really interested in looking too far ahead. “Everything has always happened so organically and following that path has never let me down. Whenever you look back you realise things happened exactly as they should, so I just keep on going.” With patience, tenacity and serendipity on her side, Alischa’s stunning designs have breathed new life into an old craft, making sure another generation will enjoy the tactile beauty of letterpress.
