Blooming lovely Fragrant floral displays and breathtaking bouquets inspire and delight customers at Rheannon Lee Floral Designs. Rheannon Lee’s life is all about flowers. From a tender age she has surrounded herself with blooms, blossoms and buds. Calla lilly is a firm favourite, but she is also partial to sweet jasmine. It is understandable; people from all cultures have long admired flowers for their capacity to enliven the spirit and beautify environments. A simple bouquet can lift an interior or simply communicate a thank you, sorry or get well soon. This passion for flowers drove Rheannon to begin her business, Rheannon Lee Floral Designs, but its inception wasn’t always so cut and dried. Rheannon’s family wanted her to work in advertising when she left high school, and it was only after a stint in this sector that Rheannon realised her true calling to master the art of floral arrangement. “I immediately took a floristry course at Ultimo Tafe and excelled in my final year. After graduation I worked for private florists around Sydney learning business skills and the importance of customer care.” Bubbling with enthusiasm and encouraged by her experience, Rheannon decided it was time to open her own retail outlet. Rheannon’s boyfriend Ashley helped her find the ideal setting in Clovelly, and its grand opening on Mother’s Day was a sell out success. “To create the perfect flower arrangement, I have to get into the heads of my customers. I ask lots of questions and it’s important to 3

remember what they have bought in the past. People have very strong lovehate preferences when it comes to certain flowers.” Embodying rustic charm and breezy coastal aesthetics, Rheannon’s shop revolves around a central exhibit piled high with floral sprays. Each bunch seduces the senses with its perfume, texture and colour. Positive affirmations are stencilled onto surrounding walls and appear on gift cards by the front desk. Recycled fence palings from local homes
adorn the shop front, and the windows are filled with Rheannon’s seasonally themed displays. “My shop gets a lot of exposure because of the bus stop out front. People see the displays and are immediately drawn inside. I like to work with different seasonal themes and change my windows every few weeks to keep things interesting.” Work for a florist means long hours, and every other day at 4.30am Rheannon visits Flemington Market to refresh her stock. Since opening three months ago, she has supplied and presented flowers for events including weddings, christenings, family festivals and funerals. Requests for unusual arrangements are not uncommon, the most curious being a floating pool arrangement for a home wedding. “The couple were getting married beside the swimming pool and wanted 4
something special to highlight it. The arrangement took six hours to assemble and was the size of a double bed. When the bride’s mother saw it she cried with joy. I like to treat every event as if it is my own.” From the grand to the discreet, Rheannon has worked across a diverse range of themes. She has created vibrant tropical centrepieces, elegant balcony decorations, and native foliage backdrops. Head pieces for bridesmaids and racetrack fashionistas are also popular. A choice of papers and ribbons are used for her breathtaking bouquets to reinforce the wow factor and make the colours pop. “My style is unique and I’m a perfectionist, so whatever I’m doing always has to be 100%.” Word is spreading fast about Rheannon’s flowers and she is receiving much attention from lifestyle magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Maddison and Bride. is a finalist in the upcoming Randwick City Council New Business Awards, and her arrangements were featured at the Doltone House Bridal Expo in Pyrmont. She has added a range of giftware and stationery to her inventory for those who may wish to add a little extra to their order.
