The daily holiday From the sanctuary of the Blue Mountains, an Australian couple spreads the relaxed holiday vibe throughout everyday life. After winning the 2013 Telstra Regional Business of the Year award, iKOU’s founders Paul and Naomi Whitfeld feel like they are on cloud nine – no mean feat for a couple who live and breathe blissfulness. iKOU produces 100 per cent natural bath and body products, natural botanical skin-care, candles and herbal
teas which are sold in their flagship store in Leura Mall, used in their day spa and wholesaled to retail stores, spas and hotels around Australia. iKOU the brand embodies its namesake [ik-oo] the Japanese verb meaning to rest, to relax and to restore. It was inspired 3
by a trip to Ubud in Bali, where Paul and Naomi relaxed in a flower petal bath overlooking the Campuan Gorge after an outdoor spa treatment. An idyllic moment sparked an epiphany to create conscious moments of rejuvenation and relaxation in their daily lives, not just on holidays. After six months of living mcgrath.com.au

Handmade production began in a converted garage with solar
panels on the roof, which rapidly grew to a factory with offset green power. An ethical, globally minded philosophy forms the core of iKOU, with ethical options for production, manufacture by hand, purchasing of ingredients and products as well as fair trade and charity support. Along with their sublime Bali awakening, Paul and Naomi had been life long eczema sufferers which also guided their decision making when creating iKOU. Ridiculed as children and told by specialists that their condition was incurable, they turned to a local herbalist who told them to examine the ingredients of everything they ate or put on their skin to make

sure they were natural. Lo and behold, the products they had previously been advised to use contained liquid paraffin, a byproduct of kerosene. “As soon as we replaced our skincare regime with pure, natural ingredients, we suddenly found we had cured ourselves of eczema and now feel so happy when people comment that we have such great skin! “Because we are so passionate about the power of natural ingredients in our own life, the philosophy extends to all iKOU products,” Naomi says. This philosophy is seemingly shared by iKOU’s customers, as more people are demanding
their skincare products are natural – a characteristic that the major companies can’t or won’t provide. The major shift towards plant based therapies is one of the reasons iKOU is growing so rapidly. While Paul and Naomi continue to find sanctuary in the crisp clean air of the Blue Mountains, iKOU is expanding, with two stores growing to a third in November in Sydney’s QVB and more planned for 2014.
