Don’t let his boyish grin and unruly blonde hair fool you – Logan Steinwede is serious about his goals and what it takes to achieve them. Arriving at MacMasters Beach on a sparkling autumn day, it’s hard to imagine a better place to grow up, but the beach is not just a playground for one 10 year old boy, it is work – plenty of it. Training up to 16 times per week, I was lucky to find Logan Steinwede out of the water (recovering from an injury) and clearly suffering a salt-water deficiency.

Born and raised on NSW’s central coast and with three sisters and four brothers to keep him grounded, Logan is well on the way to reaching his pro-surfing dreams. As one of the youngest competitors, Logan is competing two years above his peer group and proving he has what it takes to win. Recently competing at the Billabong Oz Grom Cup, Logan was ranked in fourth place. Under the expert guidance of local (and ex-pro surfer) Amee Donahue, Logan spends almost more time perfecting his craft than he does at school. And while this may seem like a dream come true for other kids his age, there are plenty of cold, dark mornings that see him surfing alone. Logan is under no illusion of the work involved and that there’s only one spot at the top.
