Located in one of Newtown’s skinny back streets, Charles Cameron and Simon Triggs’ latest venture is ticking all the boxes with Sydney’s inner westies. Having worked with the likes of Single Origin Roasters and Toby’s Estate, Cameron knows a thing or two about coffee. When the O’Connell Street building became available, he knew the bones were crying out for his magic touch. Largely unchanged from its days as an industrial furniture retailer and subsequently Berkelouw Books, the high ceilings, exposed bricks and concrete floors are the right mix of industrial urban cool.

A glass cabinet at the end of the counter displays some serious pastry work. They may not be from New York’s Dominique Ansel Bakery, but the cronut here has already become one of its best sellers. Having received a friendly note from our American friends, the cronut has been renamed the ‘Brewnut’. These little beauties are baked on site but delivered to a selection of cafés across Sydney. Cameron and Triggs have developed a menu with a paddock to plate philosophy using only free range, organic and pasture fed produce. Responding to the demands of their local clientele, there are plenty of vegan and gluten free options. Upstairs is home to retail collective O’Connell Street Merchants with a well curated mix of homewares, clothing and vintage finds.
