Megan Carmont is the founder of Code Love, a beautiful range of jewellery which uses Morse code to inscribe personal sentiments between friends and loved ones. “I used to wear a piece of jewellery with the letters WARM on it, which are the initials of my first name plus my husband and children,” she explains. “People were always asking me what it meant. Then I started thinking ‘how can I design something that means something to me, yet remains completely hidden to other people?’”

When one of her friends was battling a terrible illness, Megan designed a piece of jewellery as a gift with ‘Strength’ written on it in Morse code. Deeply touched, the friend provided her with the encouragement she needed to turn the concept into a business that existed beyond just family and friends. “I like the simplicity of the idea,” Megan says. “You can put Morse code on jewellery, cuff links, scarves..... There’s no limit and the message can be literally anything.” After launching Code Love in October 2012, the business has gone from strength to strength. Megan attributes this partially to the resurgence in appreciation for handmade, custom pieces as a preferable alternative to mass produced items from overseas. With so much of modern culture dominated by disposable, homogenised products, Code Love aims to offer something more permanent and subtle. “Everything is so fast now,” she explains. “Instagram’s fast, the internet’s fast and everybody knows everyone else’s business. It’s nice to have something that’s unique, hidden and just yours.” codelove.com.au
