The Bold & Beautiful Swim Squad, founded by Julie Isbill is an informal group who meet out the front of Manly Life Saving Club and swim at 7.00am, seven days a week from Manly to Shelly Beach and back.

It started on Boxing Day 2008, following an innocent chat over breakfast about working on her friend’s swimming. Julie volunteered to help and suggested meeting the next morning at 7.00am. Unbeknown to Julie, her friend had phoned her girlfriends about the swim and the following morning there were five who took on the 1.5km round trip. Thrilled with their achievements, they wanted to do it again and the next day there were nine. The tide was set and now six years on, having never missed a day, there are over 9,000 members. Offering a reason to get up, enjoy healthy exercise and provide social contact for local people to hang out, the group has developed a strong sense of community, with members of all ages and stages. “It doesn’t matter about social background or positions in life, it’s a real leveller. We have a spectrum of everybody which is one of the unique things that make it absolutely fabulous,” says Julie. Membership is free and anyone is welcome. To join, arrive at 6.40am, sign up and receive your hot pink cap.
