aving celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2014, the historic Six Foot Track Marathon has firmly cemented its reputation as one of Australia’s most demanding and well known ultra trail running events. It comprises a 45km trail of challenging terrain reaching across the Blue Mountains from near Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. Race Day Director Chris Stephenson was in the first group of seven men to complete the race in 1984. “This year we are expecting around 950,” he says. “The race now attracts some of Australia’s premier ultra trail runners.”

The mutually beneficial relationship between the race and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) was established in the event’s early years, and it has only strengthened over time. These days, the NSW RFS provides significant logistical support and mans the track’s aid stations during the race. Michael “Mick” Metcalfe, Group Captain and the Blue Mountains RFS’ most senior volunteer, explains that they were approached to take part because of their important role in the community as a volunteer organisation. In return, the RFS receives the event’s financial proceeds as donations. “Every brigade in the district is involved now and it’s one of our major fundraisers,” Mick says. Widely acknowledged as the largest volunteer fire service in the world, the selflessness and bravery of the volunteers at the NSW RFS is beyond question. It is impossible not to admire people who are willing to put themselves out to protect homes, families and communities, for no personal financial gain. Mick explains that The Six Foot Track Marathon has further benefits for the RFS beyond donations. “It’s an excellent training tool for things like radio work and command and control,” he says. “I love the camaraderie, the interaction with the runners and the whole atmosphere.” Six Foot Track Marathon sixfoot.com NSW Rural Fire Service rfs.nsw.gov.au
