ho am I?

I am 27 kilometres long and weigh 7000 tonnes, but contain parts within me that are 10 times thinner than a human hair. I am simultaneously colder than the vacuum of space and 100,000 times hotter than the sun, and can reach speeds up to 99.9999991 per cent of the speed of light. I am the world’s most powerful machine, yet I have been brought to a halt on more than one occasion by a weasel (although not the same one).

Any guesses? If you answered ‘The Large Hadron Collider’ (LHC), you would be correct. However, if I asked, ‘Where am I?’ the answer could be more surprising than you’d think. (Hint: not Switzerland). Until the 25th of April, you can step inside the world’s greatest experiment on our very own shores, at the Queensland Museum.

Located in the heart of Brisbane’s cultural precinct adjacent to the city’s CBD, the Queensland Museum represents one of four institutions on site that have been making (gravitational) waves both here and abroad thanks to some curious curation and exciting exhibitions. Hadron Collider: step inside the world’s greatest experiment, which came from Science Museum in London, represents the latest head-turning exhibit in an immersive experience that’s bound to appeal to children and adults alike. 4

Just make sure to keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times. It can often be difficult to grasp the sheer scale of this ground-breaking scientific endeavour while being restricted to reading about them on paper. This is obviously why the exhibit features full-scale elements of the LHC along with audio interviews with the physicists who were (and are) behind the design and use of the world’s most powerful machine. Introducing some key concepts behind particle physics and how the LHC operates, the exhibit is perhaps more importantly designed to demonstrate the curiosity, passion and desire to understand our world – arguably the greatest driver for such a grand venture. 6


The exhibit comes to Australia at an apt time, and is a part of an ignition of interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields for a younger generation. Michelangelo Mangano, a theoretical physicist at CERN, commented recently, that “after the first big explosion of interest, there’s always a period of slowing down, because all the easier stuff has been done. Now you’re struggling with more complex issues… Unexpected findings from the LHC could reignite [today’s young theorists’] enthusiasm and help younger researchers to feel like they can have an impact.” Who knows who will make the next big discovery? Perhaps, indeed, it will come from one of the many visitors to the Queensland Museum. The real LHC may still reside across the border of France and Switzerland, but Australia does have the advantage of not having a weasel population. Although that doesn’t rule out baguette-dropping birds…
