I

t’s probably a little dégagé of me, but perhaps the best interior design advice I’ve ever heard has nothing to do with interior design: “Elegance is refusal. […] Once you’ve dressed, and before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” When Mademoiselle Gabrielle Bonheur ‘Coco’ Chanel (apparently) pronounced this caustic philippic at a dinner party almost a century ago, an ingénue socialite had the great misfortune of being its recipient. A little too ornamented (…you know, nouveau riche and all that), the High Priestess of Chic tore the poor thing to ribbons. And yet, disastrously cruel though her belittling may be, its logic is profound. Currently, maximalist dicta is ruling the design world – from fashion, to interiors, to industrial design. The past two seasons have observed waifish models clod-hopping down the world’s runways in a veritable riot of colour, excessive patterns and ridiculous (though, impressive)

silhouettes. Zaha Hadid’s restrained architectural mode has swayed finally to the reign of Frank Gehry’s extravagantly sculptural approach to designing buildings that twist and fidget. And yet, while this may very well be the case, there are a few creative practitioners in our midst that still extoll the virtues of paring-back to pure and essential forms. Among these last surviving members of the crusade for simplicity is iconic Australian architect and designer Hannah Tribe of Tribe Studio and metal craftsman Adam Corry – an inspired collaborative partnership hitting the market as ‘Bit Part’. Eschewing fripperies and excitement, the pair have zeroed-in on the smallest of details in the interior design world – tiny fixtures, fittings and finishes – many of us tend not to consider in the design process until the last minute. In their own words, “it’s quite simple. We want to be the best in architectural hardware; the best bits and parts people in the world.” While we continue to spin ‘round and ‘round in a commotion of more-more-more, simplicity, purity and slow, immersive living in design is becoming increasingly fetishized and elusive. You need look no further than the resurgence of marble and copper absolutely everywhere your eye alights. Monochrome is, and always will be, the new black. Throw a stick and I guarantee you’ll hit some cravenly pared-back object, usually symmetrical, unusually quiet, always thoughtful and perfectly ‘just so’. Perhaps that ‘just so’ was what brought Coco Chanel’s advice to mind when I happened across a single door handle from the new Bit Part collection. But then again, perhaps the ‘elegance’ I saw in its ‘refusal’ was mere happenstance. In any case, Bit Part’s driving force of celebrating the simple purity of materials – marble, brass, stainless steel and bronze – marries seamlessly to both Tribe and Corry’s desire to minimise moving parts, experiment with unfinished surfaces and concentrate on the sensorial element of touch in our innumerable daily interactions with design. 4


Each piece from their collection of sustainable, handsome and oh-so-ne-plus-ultra hardware seeks to recalibrate our attentional capacity. In our overstimulated and interconnected (read: overconnected) lives, fractured attention is swiftly becoming a knotty trait of our everyday. We hanker for reprieve from the unrelenting overexcitement of our day-to-day, and demand of our homes a place to retreat into the consciousness of a total sensory profusion – a deep recess of slow, mindful dwelling. Bit Part’s suite of knobs, handles, hooks, door-pulls and

backplates are all uniquely considered as the point of our sensory engagement in the home. The strength of a door, after all, is only registered by us through those ‘bits’ and ‘parts’ we touch: the handle, the knob. “We wanted Bit Part hardware to feel cool and heavy”, Hannah Tribe tells me, “to register human touch and get better with age.” Quality. Endurance. Never has architectural hardware achieved so much with, apparently (read: deceptively) so little. As the end-result of a very successful collaborative process, Adam Corry remarks that “Hannah and I brought our different expertise to an object or problem, we draw and talk, and there is some 1+1=7 magic that happened”.

Sure, the naysayers will beat their chests and make a ridiculous hullaballoo about such dedicated and loving attention for what many will continue to consider insignificant detail. But, loud and belligerent these worrywarts may be, they’d do well to remember that in the details the devil still resides. Like a cameo in a play – a bit part, if you will – these small and apparently inconsequential minor pieces are nonetheless integral to the production. Bit parts, like it or not, constitute our direct contact with our material reality. So, ignore the cynics in their whacky get-ups and even whackier houses. They’d do well to take another lesson from Chanel: “fashion is made to only become unfashionable”. After all, elegance is eternal.
