PCYC One of Australia’s top cops is using his hard-earned skills to keep Australia’s youth out of trouble and improving lives along the way with the help of the community.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for field operations Nick Kaldas has worked his way to the top – quite literally. His large corner office sits high above Sydney’s Hyde Park with commanding views over the city. In fact, from this vantage point you can see the Woolloomooloo branch of the PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club). Kaldas has been a NSW Police officer for over three decades. His career spans a number of areas primarily in major crime investigations including homicide, armed robbery, major drug investigations, counterterrorism
and covert operations. For the past 12 months he has been on the board of the PCYC and has relished the opportunity to give insight and leadership to Australia’s youth. “What I find exciting about the PCYC is that we use helpful, healthy and active programs for as many people as we can reach,” he says. “The PCYC has always been about helping young people and keeping them involved in good things, not bad things.” Established in 1937, the first Police Boys Club was set up in 5
Woolloomooloo in a disused police station as an initiative of the Rotary Club of Sydney and Police Commissioner William John Mackay. Mackay reasoned that if troubled youth were provided with a venue to engage in sporting, cultural and recreational pursuits, it may deter them from an otherwise criminal future. Over time the organisation has grown strongly with clubs being established throughout Sydney and most regional centres around NSW. The name has changed to reflect the mcgrath.com.au

Now, 76 years later, the PCYC is one of the largest youth organisations in Australia, with over 140 clubs across the country and over 150,000 members in state associations. Kaldas says the club has had a positive impact on the prevention
of crime in Australian youth. “History has shown that it works. We measure the success rate to see where we’ve gone right or wrong with different kids.” He adds that they do a lot through their clubs to engage ‘at risk’ kids and young offenders. Command officers have each spent at least three years in the police force to develop skills in dealing with people in crisis and undergone a specific induction program. But the PCYC is not all about the prevention of crime; it welcomes all young people seeking to connect with a range of activities, make friends and enjoy a sense of community. “The PCYC has a focus on developing skills, character and leadership in young people,” Kaldas says. “It equips them with the self confidence [they need] to help them move forward in a positive way.” 6
The club’s major fundraising event is the Time4Kids campaign each year during National Youth Week. As the catchphrase ‘do time to stop youth crime’ implies, members of the community ‘do time’ in a mock cell to raise funds through sponsors who agree to raise bail for release. Citizen volunteers play an important role alongside cops at the clubs and McGrath Partner, James Dack was integral to the success of this year’s event by arranging high profile ambassadors Brad Fittler and Darren Lockyer to participate. Dack also locked himself in a ‘cell’ and was the highest fundraiser with pledges of over $30,000 for the Woolloomooloo PCYC. He has a longstanding relationship with the organisation and has helped raise over a million dollars to renovate the Woolloomooloo club, of which he was president for about 10 years.
He is now on the board of directors of the PCYC. Dack is adamant that teaching kids to make the right choice in life when the moment of truth comes is what the PCYC is all about. “Once the right choice is made, the impact on community resources is substantially decreased for hospitals, rehabilitation, ambulance, police and so on,” he says. “The clubs are there to improve the life of our youth, help develop them and keep them on track.” pcycnsw.org
