Weaving a good life As her work rapidly gathers interest around the world, contemporary weaver, Harriet Goodall lives an idyllic life working high on a hill in the NSW Southern Highlands. Like a breathtaking nature installation, the studio is filled with drying grasses, found objects and weaving projects at every stage. Just across the paddock is home – a craft-filled little yellow cottage, shared with husband Mat and their two young children, Banjo and Clementine. More than just a beautiful place to live and work, this stunning location is the source of Harriet’s inspiration and materials. “My work gives me an excuse to get out there and play, as I did as a child growing up on a farm, kicking around in the dirt.
Each piece starts with the material I find. I know where particular plants are growing and have days where I get into the bush, trawl gardens and drive down to the beach. I find beauty in decay so I also use discarded farm materials like iron and wire.” At her kitchen table with a cup of tea, Harriet speaks with much respect about the age-old craft of basket-weaving, once an essential industry. But unlike traditional basket weavers, Harriet has the freedom to put texture, colour and 5
form before practicality. “Much of my work is experimental. I spend a lot of time in the studio mucking around with materials.” Harriet points to two striking wasp-nest like sculptures hanging above the table, laughing as she reveals the humble origins of the material: cardboard salvaged from a recently installed dishwasher. She believes people are drawn to the simplicity of her work, sensing something familiar. “I think people see something that could have occurred naturally, something they almost recognize… but not quite.” mcgrath.com.au

Although some days she finds herself dealing with the unusual challenges that come from working with the materials she loves and the scope of her work (like the incredible logistics of fumigating and shipping massive woven light-fittings to a Californian restaurant), Harriet says she most enjoys the commissions that drive her to explore new textures and sculptural forms – such as the two huge nest sculptures she was requested to
weave in the shape of baby car seat capsules. Harriet says she is aware of her work slowly becoming more and more sculptural and gradually sees herself developing as sculptural artist. She looks forward to one day exhibiting her work in that way. Sharing the craft of weaving is an important part of Harriet’s work and she genuinely enjoys watching people at her workshops discover the unexpected sense of community that comes from sitting together, just as people have done for centuries, making something beautiful. Harriet believes basket-weaving inspires people to see the beauty in the imperfections that come when making something asymmetrical. She also adds, “When you weave, your hands and mind are engaged in a way that allows you forget everything else and shut out the everyday. It’s very meditative.” Having recently returned from the US running workshops in New Hampshire

and Boston, Harriet senses the return of the travel bug she and Mat shared pre-children. Her thoughts wander towards travelling, this time as a family, to discover more about weaving in other cultures. Meanwhile, back on the hill at Roberston, Harriet is busily working on collaborations with artists, designers and architects. Alongside running her popular workshops, there are also plans to create a new studio, hopefully as charming as the old dairy, only more watertight and with power. Grateful for a good life living and working in the country with her family, Harriet says she doesn’t so much think about the next dream job as much as she thinks about the dream life. “Actually, a dream life looks much as it does now, as we are, but perhaps more space,” she says. A true country soul, Harriet imagines one day moving her family further into the bush for an even quieter life. There are plenty of ideas of how
she and Mat (a garlic farmer who grows their meat and vegetables) could live and work together doing workshops. Exactly where this more space might be, could be a matter for negotiation – whilst Harriet says she is inspired by the big sunsets and big dusty dry landscapes of her childhood, Mat is more a high country person, inspired by the mountains and gullies. Wherever time takes them, Harriet is content knowing life tends to throw good things their way. “We are happy to roll with that, just the way we always have.� harrietgoodall.com
