Raising their sites The one-stop-shop making hard to find easy. Eri Stewart and Trudi Jenkins, the creative women behind stunning online gift store hardtofind, had an impressive set of skills between them before starting out together. Now, after years of slowly growing their business they have gathered even more – including learning how to speak ‘IT’. Whilst their carefully curated collections quickly caught the attention of discerning online shoppers, it was their slick model and enviable growth that recently secured them an investor to help take hardtofind all the way. Eri and Trudi share their story of two working mothers who found a place for their entrepreneurial flair and great satisfaction working on their own terms in a tight-knit partnership. Was it difficult to leave established careers to start htf? E – There’s a period before a business can pay the bills when you have a foot in two camps - it is scary. But by the time we both went fulltime we had the confidence to just go for it. The data was tracking just as we wanted so it was really about putting one foot in front of the other. Has the htf concept changed? T – Originally we had 40 sellers. Now we have 600 and 16,000 gifts so the volume is completely different but the concept is identical. We are all about gifting and that hasn’t changed.

Is there a typical htf customer? T - Our customers are mostly like ourselves: busy women who want unique gifts but don’t have much time to shop, let alone seek out a tiny beautiful store in another state!

side of the business - there wasn’t an easy way to learn it! T - Learning how to brief every last detail was like learning another language. The combination of our skills is now quite unique.

What relationship do you have with sellers?

The best thing about being your own boss?

T - We get amazing feedback from sellers - small businesses, who watch sales snowball and their business become more viable. Some have even closed their websites to sell only through us. Very few of our sellers could achieve on their own what we can do together - like distributing five million catalogues. We definitely turn down far more sellers than we accept. It’s like editing a magazine, you have to have a strong vision and stick to it.

T - Flexibility means everything. We can also be so nimble in terms of getting things done and making decisions and because it’s just us, we can do things straight away. We are both strong characters and love the freedom to follow our convictions. It’s very satisfying.

Biggest lesson learnt? E - We didn’t understand just how involved we’d need to be in the IT

What makes htf unique? T - We want it to feel like entering a beautiful store full of unique gifts. We are about quality, choice and convenience rather than being a discount site. Our blog style magazine with trends, ideas and interviews also 6

enables us to tell the story of our sellers and show people how to create a certain look with homewares and fashion. They can see the how and what and move straight into the store. Which designers do you love at the moment? E - I’m obsessed with the art from Penny Farthing Design House, also the luxurious Turkish Towels from Boatshed Beach Towels. Favourite room at home? E - My bedroom with a little northfacing balcony that gently lets in light through plantation shutters. T – My bathroom, a bath with glass of wine, candle and my phone – is that bad? I like to catch up on reading! As busy mothers when and where do you do your best thinking? E - Early morning walks before I start my day in the office. It’s amazing how much exercise helps me focus.

Equestrian lifestyle property ‘Wombagully’ is a 25 acre property in Canyonleigh in the NSW Southern Highlands. After a long search to find a property that ticked all the boxes, John and Judithe McKindley knew from the moment they arrived at the front gate, that this was the one. “I have a background in design and we wanted to create an inside/outside home incorporating expansive decks so we could sit and enjoy the horses and nature,” Judithe explains. Working with esteemed architect Martin O’Toole, the couple skilfully redesigned the home to create a superbly cohesive contemporary residence. It has every creature comfort imaginable and first class equestrian facilities including a cross country training track. “We were attracted to the natural bushland on the property which is ideal for cross country training and it is also home to our resident wildlife,” John says. “The grandchildren love the turtles and ducks at the dam and we often go there to toast marshmallows over the fire pit and watch the sunset with a glass of wine,” Judithe adds. ‘Wombagully’ is a perfect place to raise children, there is a regular school bus run, daily mail deliveries, a social café nearby and Canyonleigh has immense community spirit. 9
