Questioning Color Choices

For a visual designer and artist, color is one of the important tools you use to express your creation. So much so that you find yourself asking these same-patterned questions when creating something: “What colors do I use and why do I use it? If I use this and that color, what are the visual consequences that come in effect from the juxtaposition?”     It’s these types of questions I find myself perpetually asking that lead me to reflect on,  “What can I do to better expand my color vocabulary, and utilize a more diverse range of colors?” In attempts to challenge this growth, I created a year-long independent art project where I scribbled colorful drawings each day.

10

A Euphoric Project

The purpose of this year-long project was to avoid habitually-selected colors and interact with foreign colors, while also disciplining myself to create something daily. “No rules: just do it and have fun,” was the project’s motto. And for 365 days, I created bundles of colorful pieces detailed with layers of colored linear patterns inspired by observations and experimentation. Literary and visual references such as these assisted in my project: Josef Albers’ book Interaction of Color, Sanzo Wada’s Haishoku Soukan, and Books of Colors: Matching Colors, Combining Colors, Color Designing, Color Decorating by Design Research from Japan. Other daily observations in nature, the fine arts, graphic design, and cultural or mundane objects has inspired and taught me well.     Though I mentioned discipline, this year-long project felt free of labor, as each scribble seemed to express an innate desire to create something. These moments of starting a new piece daily—and finishing it—became a realm of euphoria and inspiration.

This is a Reference Book

In concluding my year-long project, I realized the utility and function the drawings have for visual referencing. This two volume book, made for myself and others to reference, is an accumulation of those 365 pieces. I hope to break repetitive color-choosing habits, and inspire new color combinations out of the infinite amount that are possible.     Just as each scribble piece is a rough-draft form of art making, free from laborsome crafting, the book also emulates the pieces’ rawness. No vigorous explanations to the proportion of colors used, nor the data of each colors’ names or codes, simply a visual narrative that translates a story through the combinations of various colors.
