Hi, my name is McKenzie Sosa and I have a lot of interests. I am so fortunate to have studied architecture because it has lended me tools to be creative in other industries, thereby strengthening my design intentions. I have worked througout my college career and it has taught me a lot about the gives and takes of managing two responsibilities at once. Being creative is something I have always been passionate about and I would love to be able to learn more from you.

Sanctuary Angel Island, CA FALL 2018

INTERMEDIATE ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

A museum to honor the families who suffered here The main project is the design of a “Sanctuary on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay to both commemorate the history of immigration in the United States and perform as a contemporary gathering space to combine functions of a visitor and an event center and facility for naturalization ceremonies. The aim is to explore how landscape and architecture as sanctuary and refuge can be coalesced to develop a place of multi-scensory contemplation and reconciliation. In broad terms, a sanctuary can be considered a place of refuge and protection, both in physical and psychological terms.

Reflecting on past experiences The procession into the building is meant to be a poetic embrace with the site. Escaping into the land while coming up for brief moments of light - define what it is to be enveloped in the history of the site and see it as a Sanctuary. The final moment is the auditorium, completely washed in light while still being protected by the land.

Multiple spaces for the individual guest: A home away from home During COVID-19. our perception of our spaces have changed because we are confined. The Von Minden Hotel now has multiple spaces for each individual guest to occupy. The model room is made to house the sleeping arrangements while along the corridor you can experience a private lounge as well as a communal kitchen. Entrances to each room are carved out for places to set personal belongings as if at home. Materiality is made of a soft palette to bring in a warmth and inviting atmosphere.

LIFT High Island, TX FALL 2019

DESIGN BUILD STUDIO

An outdoor living room to be used as a bird watching spot for visitors to High Island - Houston Audobon Society While HAS is known for birding, it does much more to benefit natural habitats - both urban and outside the city.. HAS helps protect natural sanctuaries, manage and protect public lands, advocate for urban conservation and eco-literacy for the youth. High Island is nationally known as a bird watching haven, particularly in the spring when birds return from their wintering spots south of the US. Each year HAS has long-term visitors who spend several weeks at High Island. The design is to build a screened outdoor area for the visitors which includes a fire circle and viewing area. The structure can accomodate 12 guests and consider the 2-acre area surrounding it. Design time and construction completion were done in a 3.5 month period.

Hope Marketplace Austin, TX SPRING 2019

COMPREHENSIVE STUDIO

A homeless community plan off of I-35 where a marketplace is needed to fix the food desert as well as providing job opportunities First the design of a new campus program for Haven for Hope - based off of the predecessor in San Antonio - will help the homeless population in Austin. The campus will house a transformation center as well as providing food, shelter, and clothing. Job opportunities will also come available with the addition of public spaces for the St. Johns neighborhood such as a markethall, a donation center, and a small strip mall. The main focus of the project is a new marketplace for the community. Through a critical lense of equity, this neighborhood has been put under a stranglehold of poverty and lack of access to healthy food options. In order to meet the needs of both communities, the markethall is re-envisioned after the farmer’s market.
