The Return of the McK’s New Irish Import Mighty Mustache By Libby Mowers Staff Writer Facial hair – one of the biggest dilemmas faced by young people around the world. You may have asked yourself at some point, “Should I grow facial hair or be clean shaven?” If I do grow it, what kind should I have? Should I date someone with facial hair or someone clean shaven? Believe it or not, there are resources to not only help you decide whether to grow facial hair, but how to grow it. One such organization is the American Mustache Institute, which

Teacher Feature By Theresa Schmidt Editor-in-Chief At McKendree, we pride ourselves on our small class sizes and the personal attention received, yet how well do we actually pay attention to our teachers? Introducing the Teacher Feature column, designed to test and strengthen
your knowledge of McKendree’s faculty! Each issue we will present an outdated photo of the professor and five fun facts about him or her for your guessing and entertainment pleasure. All correct entries received by 7 p.m. the following Friday will be entered to win a $5 gift card to the Sweeter House of Coffee and recognition in the next issue of the paper. Happy guessing!
* This teacher is a graduate of Huntingdon College in 1969, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 and Louisiana State University in 1991 and has taught at McKendree for 19.5 years.
* While not generally a rule breaker, if she could do one illegal thing without being caught, this teacher would want to sit with her feet in the fountain. She continued, “I also want to put hats on our Inspiration statue. An Easter bonnet, a football helmet, a Santa hat, a witch’s hat. Last July I wanted to give him a fan during the heat spell, too.”
* If she started a band she would call it “Green Sour Ringlets (a phrase from a Shakespeare play),” and her favorite TV shows are Glee, Dancing with the Stars, Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery and Saving Grace. * If she was a student at McKendree, she would consider her teacher-self “a nut, but harmless,” and if she could be any superhero, she would want to be Cinderella’s fairy godmother so she could “make people’s dreams come true by helping them break out of self-imposed limitation.” * Her favorite food in Ames or 1828 is Shazad’s fried fish, and her biggest physical fear is snakes. Last Issue’s Featured Teacher Revealed!
Congratulations to Tirzah Dawson, whose name was drawn from our raffle after she correctly identified last issue’s featured teacher as Duane Olson, a religious studies professor. Dr. Olson is a graduate of Trinity College (now called Trinity International University) and has taught at McKendree for nine years. He has two daughters, ages 21 and 18, and is married to another McKendree faculty member, Dr. Boudreau. If he could do one illegal thing without getting caught, it would be slitting the tires of every SUV he sees, because he considers the SUV “a symbol of what is wrong with American culture…They’re big, garish gas-guzzlers that are not needed to do what a vehicle is supposed to do, which is get you effectively from place to place, [and they have] put us decades behind the rest of the world in the competitive car market and in envisioning the future.” His favorite television shows are Curb Now Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, True Blood, Big Love, the Minnesota Vikings’ football games and the NBA playoffs, and his life motto is “What would Larry David Do? -- Do the Opposite!” He also enjoys gardening, singing, cooking and woodworking, and the most important lesson he has learned is never to give Then up when “pursuing significant goals for one’s life and for the health and well-being of society.” Thanks to Dr. Olson for sharing with us, and thanks to everyone who participated.

using a computer or the Internet. Whether you are very familiar with cyber safety practices or have no idea where to begin, now is a good time to evaluate your security. Here are a few basic practices everyone should be familiar with:
Passwords and PINs: Passwords should be at least eight characters long and use varied characters like upper and lower case, numbers and symbols. Don’t use dictionary words or significant numbers like birthdays, social security numbers, etc. Of course you shouldn’t write passwords down, so the best way to remember a complex password is to make it according to some memory device that is easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. For example, you could use the first letters of each word in a movie or song title, substituting numbers for some of the letters. Use passwords as often as possible and don’t use the same password for multiple accounts or websites. For Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), again, don’t use dates and numbers that can be easily associated with you.
tion software or enable automatic updates if you can. Also make sure you know what you are downloading – viruses can be disguised as protection software. One of the best anti-virus programs you can get is Avast, which is effective as well as free to download.
E-mail: If you don’t recognize an e-mail address or anything about a message looks suspicious, don’t open it. Be wary of attachments, even if they seem to come from a known address. You can save attachments to your computer and scan them with your virus software prior to opening them if anything about them seems wrong. Also use caution with links in e-mails; if one comes up that you’re actually interested in, it’s more secure to do a search for the site on your own than to use an e-mail link. Social networking sites: Don’t post personal information or anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with any stranger seeing. The internet is public and once your information is out there, you can’t get it back. Identities and facts are easy
to misrepresent online, so be skeptical of information and people. Make sure you know the site’s privacy policy and the privacy settings of your profile. Apply the strongest security settings the site offers and use strong passwords. Online shopping: Do business with reputable vendors and familiar sites. Attackers can create false websites and e-mails that mimic legitimate shopping websites or charities. Never send personal or financial information in response to an e-mail from a shopping website. Real ones will not ask for sensitive information over e-mail. Check privacy policies and use all available safety features. Sites that encrypt your information are preferable. A web address that begins in “https” and a locked padlock icon at the bottom of the browser or the right of the address bar indicate encryption. It is also safer to use one credit card for all online purchasing. Credit cards have more liability laws to protect you than do debit cards. Keep a record of things you buy online and compare them to your bank statements. Report any discrepancies as soon as possible. As more and more of our daily lives becomes connected to computers, nobody can afford to neglect basic computer security. Defending your computer information is as important as locking your car or house. If you need help evaluating or understanding your computer’s security, find a resource such as McKendree’s IT department. If you’re a McKendree student, you can bring your computer to IT and get it fixed or cleaned for free. They say ignorance is bliss, but when it comes to cyber security, ignorance will certainly cost you.

A Guide to the Hidden Costs ! e s i r
$ p $ r $ Su $$$
By Lyndsey Dothager Contributing Writer
When many high school seniors and their parents think about college, their minds immediately jump to tuition prices. They look at prices online or maybe at brochures that are sent in droves to their homes. Many of these brochures will play up the ability of that school to provide students with scholarships or grants to meet their financial needs. These forms of financial aid are great and will affect the decisions of many students as to what schools they will be able to attend. However, sometimes these schools forget to mention some of the hidden or surprise costs of college. McKendree University is a small, private university. McKendree’s base tuition is $21,370. When you add in housing ($4,180$5,370 depending on the residence) and a standard meal- plan ($3,670) if you choose, the price is brought to approximately $29,220. McKendree also charges a $700 dollar fee that includes activities like football games, many programs at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts and also health benefits provided by an on-campus nurse. McKendree’s website also adds in incidental costs of books, loan fees, personal expenses, and transportation costs. When all of these are added together, McKendree believes its total costs to be around $33,310 a year not including financial aid. When laid out in such a format, the costs of school seem very clear-cut. However, there are other costs not mentioned or not given enough credit.
Found in Today’s Colleges
Textbooks While McKendree estimates the cost of textbooks to be about $1,200 a year, this can be an underestimation for a student who may be taking extra classes per semester or who is going into a field like nursing. Because many schools, including McKendree, do not have a rental program, book prices are always a hot topic among current college students. The overpricing at bookstores lead to many students going online for books. This is usually a cheaper option, but students should always try to order from the most reliable sites possible. Horror stories of textbooks being damaged or never showing up are rampant on college campuses. Schools like Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL have textbook rental programs. At Eastern, each student is charged an extra $9.95 per credit hour they take and are then allowed to rent textbooks from the school. On average, this comes out to about $298 a year for an in-state student. Obviously the difference is staggering. Most students at non-rental schools pay this much and usually more per semester for their books. When looking at potential schools, ask about that campus’s book policy and whether a rental system is available or not. It will save you thousands of dollars by graduation day.
$ $ $ $ $ $
$$$$ $$ Parking Another hot issue in many schools is parking. In smaller schools parking permits cost very little or (as in McKendree’s case) are free. However, in larger schools like University of Illinois at
$ $ $ $ $ $
Urbana- Champaign, parking permits run at $480 a year for lots that may be entirely across campus from where you live. University of Illinois’s website boasts that it has the 7th cheapest parking in the Big Ten and compares its rate with Penn States’ $1,200 per year permits. Of course when parking places are scarce or not in an advantageous spot to the student, infractions will occur. Parking tickets at McKendree run at $20 per infraction. This varies campus to campus. To avoid this issue, or to at least make yourself aware of it, make sure to visit prospective schools and drive around to check out parking spots. Again, talk to current students to hear their thoughts on this issue. Sometimes they may give tips on how to work around the system.
Dorm Life A big part of the new college experience is dorm life. One of the most exciting parts about getting ready for school for many students was getting to pick out new bed clothes, lamps, rugs, and just getting to decorate your own space. You can shop around and find many good, cheap options at Wal-Mart, Target, and Bed, Bath and Beyond. I found the estimated costs of bedding, desk lamps, and bathroom necessities online at Wal-Mart to be around $200. At McKendree University, each student living on campus is provided with a mini-fridge/ freezer and microwave. This is not the case at many schools. A mini-fridge/freezer runs at about $125 and a microwave will cost around $70. As always, when shopping for products, shop around. If you see a really neat bedspread that is a bit pricey, make
sure to look other places that may carry that same line or something very similar for a lower cost.
Technology Technology is a big part of today’s college experience. Of course, one of the main needs of a college student is a personal computer. Computers are vital in today’s colleges. Many schools have computer labs where students can work for hours at a time, but it can be hard to find an open computer and many of the labs have hours that might not fit into your schedule. You can find laptops many places for $400 and up depending on what features you needs. Another investment you may want to consider is a printer. Many schools have a few printers in their computer labs for student use. However, printing also carries charges. At McKendree, students and faculty are given 500 free prints per semester. After those copies are used, the price is five cents a page. University of Illinois charges students ten cents for black and white copies and more depending on toner usage for color copies with no free pages being granted. However, having a printer comes with costs also. A printer itself can be found for as low as $40, but the upkeep of ink cartridges can run anywhere from $15- $80 each time you run out of ink. Again, when you are planning to attend a school, ask what the policy on public computer/ printer usage is. If there are free pages offered, use them before using your own printer.
McKendree is a $700 fee that includes athletic events, Hett events, and certain health benefits. The issue of healthcare has been in the news a lot recently because of President Obama’s new ideas on healthcare. Health plans vary greatly from campus to campus. At McKendree, a registered nurse is on hand during office hours to treat common illnesses or for referrals to a doctor if the case is more serious. The fee also covers Accident Only, Second Pay Insurance to full-time students who report their accident to health services within 24 hours of its occurence. At University of Illinois, the charge for health insurance alone is $206 plus an additional fee for health services. While many of these costs and fees are unavoidable, knowing about them and being prepared to pay them can lead to less of a headache later on. Remember, before deciding on a school, walk around campus and talk to current students. While faculty and admissions counselors are usually very helpful, they are on the school’s payroll to get your money. Students will usually give much more honest answers and help you to understand life on campus better. Also, like with anything else, shop around. If you buy a textbook new online and spend $100 for it and then find out you could have bought it used in the bookstore for $70, you won’t be a happy camper. So take your time and scout out good deals. Hopefully, this article gave you a better understanding about what extra fees to expect and how to be ready for them.

Tech Talk: Trade Your Study Abroad Ctd. Phone for Your Computer By Andrew Briner Contributing Writer Is your phone blowing up all the time causing you to burn through all your minutes? Do you run out at the end of the month and either rely on other people to use a phone or get charged ridiculous overage fees for every minute? You should check out Skype and the Magic Phone Jack. Both use a broadband internet connection to make calls digitally. So stop wasting your minutes and paying more than you need to. Skype is a program that only requires a computer, microphone and speakers. A webcam is optional but will allow you to have video calls. The good thing is that most new computers already have those things built in. To get started you need to go Skype.com and download the software. You then follow the step by step directions and make a username and password. That’s it. You
can then call anyone worldwide with a broadband connection and Skype. Delora DeRoche, a missionary with Kids Around the World said, “ When you are out of the country for weeks at a time, Skype helps you to stay connected to home and family. It really helps to hear voices.” Both ends of the conversation must be logged on to their Skype account at the same
time to use it. DeRoche continued, “You just hit the icon of the person you want to talk to and they answer and talk just like you would on a phone. Or you can type messages to connect at a certain time. They can check their messages and can coordinate schedules.” The Magic Jack requires you to purchase a small device
with a male USB jack and a female telephone jack. It costs $40 and is available online or at Best Buy. But unlike Skype, it allows you to call actual phone numbers, landlines and cell phones. So the person you are calling can be anywhere and you still will be able to contact his or her cell phone without being charged for minutes. The only downfall is that you only can use the Magic Jack at home or by a computer. A cordless phone can also work. These usually go around fifty feet from the phone base, so you will not have to hover around your computer to make a call. There also is a$25 annual fee. After you buy the Magic Jack, the software has to be installed. Then you get to pick your phone number and start using your Magic Jack. Skype and the Magic Jack are cool things you probably didn’t know about. Check them out.

harder.” Charter has always been a tightlipped company, which makes getting information difficult even for the IT department. For the first two and a half weeks after the problems started, Charter was adamant that the problems were caused by IT and its setup. When Charter finally realized that they were in fact, wrong, they began replacing items. They replaced their equipment at McKendree, swapped out McKendree’s modems a half dozen times, and replaced equipment in their data center in Collinsville. The problems still persist, however. The net outages were especially troublesome for the residents of McKendree West. Kyle Clark, junior, said, “It held us back from being able do our papers and study, especially when piper and the library close by like 10pm. Guy Speak Girl Talk Q

with Tavi Sanders
I’m a junior and I don’t know what I want to do with my life. My parents want me to be a business major like my dad, but I hated the one business class I took and find that stuff extremely boring. How do I figure out what’s right for me without disappointing my parents?
Guy Speak: For starters, you shouldn’t do anything because you are afraid of what other people will think. You only get one life, so why spend it doing something you don’t enjoy? I say forget the business major if it won’t make you happy. Try to think of things that you enjoy doing and ask yourself if you can make a career out of it. You are the only person who can decide how you spend your life, so don’t let anybody else try. Your parents might want you to follow in your father’s footsteps, but you are not your father. It is important that you realize that you are in control of your own life. Girl Talk: It seems as though you’re well on your way to figuring out what’s right for you. You don’t really need my advice. You already have the answer and you just need encouragement. You have already found that being a business major is not for you. You are old enough to make your own decision. It’s okay if you want to please your parents, but it is also okay to please yourself. Getting a higher education is for your benefit. If you go into a field you have no passion for, you will regret it. Talk with your advisor about other majors. They can assist you with finding the one that is right for you. If this will comfort you any, there is no way your parents can find out if you change your major. It’s a matter of confidentiality. Your parents have no access to your personal business, only what you tell them. So start making decisions that you can live with.
Q
My parents have really been fighting a lot lately, and I am worried they are going to get a divorce. Is there anything I can do to fix things?
Guy Speak: You can’t force two people into love. As much as we might want to be able to do that, sometimes two people just don’t go together. Consider divorce being the best option. Would you rather them stay together and fight all the time? Then nobody would ever be happy. I have been through this and can tell you from experience that it can be one of the hardest things to deal with. There are a few things that you can do to make things easier for yourself. One, talk to them each individually about how much it hurts to have to hear them fight. Let them know that you are still there and that they need to consider you in all of this. Lastly, don’t think that you can jump in and save the day, because it doesn’t work like that. In saying that, please know that you cannot take any blame for the decisions your parents make. It’s not up to you if your parents stay together. Life and its truths are harsh, but we grow stronger from the unfortunate times we must endure. Girl Talk: Can you fix things? That depends on whether or not it can be fixed. One of the leading causes of divorce is a lack of communication. Maybe your parents need a mediator during these discussions. You can definitely help in that way if they will allow you. I will be honest: some relationships do reach the point of no return. What I mean by this is that one person in the relationship just wants to be free. When a relationship reaches that point, there is little if anything anyone can do to persuade them otherwise. These arguments could have been going on long before you noticed them. I hope that this is not the case for your parents. We will remain optimistic and try to find a solution to their problem. Go to them and get to the root of the problem. Find out what triggers these arguments. Next offer your assistance or suggest counseling. If they are willing to do either, that’s great! Next find out if there is anything that has changed in their relationship. There is a saying my grandmother used and it’s true: “Whatever you did to get someone is the same way you keep them.” Find out what has changed between the two and see if you can help them rekindle what they’ve lost. Good luck!

“Go Green” at 1828?
By Sarah Adams Assistant Editor Environmental concerns are big everywhere and McKendree University is no exception. The Green Team is an active organization on campus, the university holds Earth Week events and students are constantly encouraged to recycle using the recycling containers found around campus. Ames dining hall has recently made a move to conserve water and reduce food waste by eliminating the use of food trays. But how environmentally friendly is the newest addition to McKendree’s dining facilities, 1828? Being a café where you can order food to go instead of an eat-in dining hall, 1828 naturally uses more disposable items than Ames, including styrofoam cups, plastic cutlery and paper napkins, but the café does use washable plastic baskets for eat-in orders. When asked about the possibility of more reusable items in the café, McKendree’s Sodexho Food Services Manager Shazad Baig pointed out that washing more things would require more use of water, energy and chemicals. Gabriel Shapiro, professor of journalism at McKendree, inquired as to the possibility of bringing in one’s own reusable cup. McKendree may be a small, community environment, but its dining facilities are still expected to conform to health standards, so giving customers drinks or food in personal containers is just not an option for the staff of 1828, especially during flu season. However, Baig said he is working with McKendree’s Green Team to start a reusable cup program. Of course, the job of reducing waste does not fall only to food distributors. 1828
most likely generates less food waste than Ames since it doesn’t offer buffet-style services, but students can be careful about wasting other resources. “If anybody wants to help with the environment they should use all the available resources with care such as not using a lot of napkins,” said Baig. 1828 gets a few more points toward being environmentally friendly for how it obtains all the food and drinks being sold. “Most of the food is purchased at an American food products distributer and some of the produce is from local producers,” explained Baig. Buying local can reduce transportation costs and support smaller, less industrialized producers. In addition to this, some of 1828’s items, such as coffee, are bought fair trade. Baig described fair trade as “an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries and promote sustainability.” Fair Trade involves paying full price to producers in developing countries in exchange for the goods they export. Fair Trade certified products are required to conform to a long list of environmental standards concerning conservation and waste disposal. Buying products in this way helps to support smaller farmers as well as the natural areas in which they grow produce. No dining facility is without impact on the environment, but we keep working on ways to make them better. Considering that 1828 has only been open for business a year, it doesn’t seem to be doing too badly from an environmental standpoint, so enjoy your Fair Trade coffee and go easy on the napkins.

us? If they want us to act like adults, they should treat us like adults by not giving us B.S. attendance policies to scare us into going to class.” Many students seem to agree with Hintz’s statement because it is hard to respect a rule that isn’t enforced, let alone the person who writes it in the syllabus and then doesn’t enforce it. Hintz and Schwind went on to say that attendance policies should depend on the class. For instance, general education classes don’t necessarily need an attendance policy, but classes within your major field of study should have one—that way, you’ll get the most out of the classes that are most important for you. It is easy to guess what a majority of students feel about attendance policies, but how do professors feel about them? Obviously there are many professors who implement some sort of policy, or else this discussion wouldn’t exist. One professor, who has a notorious reputation for harsh attendance policies on campus, is just as fiery as students about attendance policies. Dr. Kemp, who will close the door two minutes after class starts and not allow late students to come into the class, had a counterargument for nearly every argument made by students, without being told what to argue against. Page 11 Where have all the hockey players gone? By Kimberly Siddall Contributing Writer Take a moment to look at the size of our men’s sports teams. The Bearcat football team has a whopping 85 players, the baseball team has 45, and the hockey team: only 17. So, where have all the hockey players gone? In terms of talent, we lost about 150 points from last year in graduating seniors, so this season is a total 180 from last season, says goaltender Mike Stier. This translates to a five player loss. “We lost a few key, experienced players and there is no way to replace that. We have some talented freshmen that will progress with playing time,” says senior Charlie Donze, center. Because of this loss, the team has had to change their style of play as well as the lines. Stier says that for the last two years the team focused on offence, saying, It wasn’t unusual for us to score between seven and nine goals a game. Donze says that the team is trying a more defensive style of play due to the loss of offensive players. “The main difference this year is we now have to battle to win games instead of overpowering teams with our offense as we did last year,” he said. He thinks that this battle will help the team become stronger as the season progresses. The McKendree hockey team practices twice a week. The coach, Bill Misiak, stays with the team for an hour, but the players will stay longer to practice on their own. Stier says that they practice different game situations and breakouts and hold skating competitions among themselves. In the beginning of the season, practices were a little different with the loss of seniors. New lines were formed and the team developed a balance of offense and defense. Stier thinks that it’s great that the McKendree hockey team can skate right alongside the bigger rosters from bigger schools. Not only can they keep up, they can win.
