McK’s Cancelled Classes Catastrophe
By Chelsea Arnold Assistant Editor
Ah, the joy of creating one’s own schedule at the end of each semester. Once the perfect combination of classes and credit hours are found, one little click of the ‘Register’ button is a student’s final assurance of a new schedule for the next term. Not this year. Over the last few weeks of summer vacation, I, like many McKendree students, took a moment to check my email for any important news about classes or teacher messages. Much to
my dismay, and utter horror, I’d received messages saying that three of my classes did not have enough students enrolled and were cancelled. Cancelled?! After racing to WebAdvisor to get a spot in the class and holding it the entire summer, the class would never even have a first day. Without three of the classes I not only wanted, but have to take for my major and minor, I only had 10 credit hours to my name and big holes in my weekly grind. Senior Katherine Porter also received an email about her dropped course, Survey of American Art. “They cancelled the Survey of American Art class for the second year in a row,” Porter said. Ben Simon, who originally planned to only take one semester of German, was angered by the sudden change in his plans for the year. “I had planned all of my classes and past schedules as-

At McKendree, we pride ourselves on our small class sizes and the personal attention received, yet how well do we actually pay attention to our teachers? Introducing the Teacher Feature column, designed to test and strengthen *A graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore, Md., this teacher has worked at McKendree for 4 years. * He and his wife have three cats: Pandora, “a Our Featured Teacher, seated in the lower right corner tail-less wonwith his band, Wrathchild. der;” Pimmy, “a former feral cat who worships [his] wife and despises [him];” and Tabasco, his “little buddy.” * His most embarrassing experience was on his first day teaching at Radford College in Virginia. He shared, “I turned around after writing on the board and caught my pants leg on the edge of the blackboard. A piece of metal on the edge ripped a foot-long gash in my pants and I spent the remainder of the class trying, quite unsuccessfully, to position myself so that no one could see it.” * In his spare time, this teacher enjoys playing World of Warcraft, working with his wife on their “museum-ready sock monkey collection” and making and listening to music. * His favorite soda is Jolt and his favorite snack is salt and vinegar potato chips. As for his favorite food in 1828, he admits: “The muffins are incredible, but I would have to say that whoever makes the coffee cake should get a raise. Last Issue’s Featured Teacher Revealed!
Congratulations to Belinda Clark, whose name was drawn from our raffle after she correctly identified last issue’s featured teacher as Tami Eggleston, a psychology professor and McKendree’s Associate Dean. Dr. Eggleston is a graduate of Morningside College in Sioux City and Iowa State University, and has worked at McKendree for 13 years, since 1996. Graduating with a double major in biology and psychology, she says the most difficult class she ever took was Organic Chemistry and the most interesting place she has ever been was Japan as part of the two-week Technos trip. She is the proud owner of Humphrey, the “cutest miniature schnauzer in the world,” whom she and her husband rescued from the St. Louis Schnauzer Rescue League, and she reluctantly admitted that she enjoys watching American Idol, Top Chef, Project Runway and the Real Housewives of Orange County. If she started a rock band she would call it “Statistically Speaking,” since she “always say[s] that in class,” and if she could do one illegal thing without getting caught she would want to drive her husband’s “big block Chevy rear engine dragster around Lebanon.” Thanks to Dr. Eggleston for sharing with us, and thanks to everyone who participated.

Capitalism can’t cure ailing health care system By Cory Freivogel Staff Writer Recently on his radio show, conservative commentator Glenn Beck aired a segment criticizing a Texas medical program which prolongs the storage of infant blood that is extracted during a screening process for birth defects. During the segment, Beck alleges that the blood is being stored in an attempt to determine which diseases each infant may be susceptible to later in life. This will allow the government to deny coverage to, or even eliminate the particularly expensive babies as a cost saving measure. Five minutes of research easily proves otherwise. The baby blood, stored anonymously, is actually being used for cancer research and birth defect studies. Unfortunately, the truth is rarely as entertaining as wild speculation about governmentsponsored infanticide. The baby blood story is just one small snippet of the broad, fictitious narrative being characterized as reasonable opposition to health care reform. In the last few months, hysterical protesters, lying pundits, and crooked politicians have used numerous distortions and outright lies to block reasonable, necessary health care reform. Since the bill’s introduction, numerous members of congress and the media have been working tirelessly to convince America that a program meant to control rapidly inflating premium costs and provide coverage to the uninsured is actually a secret attempt to install an Orwellian dystopia that slaughters the elderly and disabled in order to control costs. These claims, though oft repeated, are completely and entirely false. No health care reform bill will force the elderly to an early death, deny coverage to the handicapped, or require massive rationing of care. Unfortunately, America’s cur-

Tavi, I’m confused what should I do. Adult life isn’t as wonderful as I thought. I have independence now. I would like to wish it away, but I can’t. I have a choice as to whether I have sex or not. I can’t use the excuse “my dad will kill me” anymore. I’m afraid my boyfriend will get sex from someone else if not me. He says he respects my decision but he keeps hinting around to sex every time I’m with him. It’s obvious that it’s on his mind. Others are having sex, but I really want to wait for marriage.
Q
Do you live for you or do you live for others? If you don’t want to have sex, that is your rule and you should follow it! Don’t let anyone persuade you to do something you will regret later. From a Biblical aspect you should refrain from sex until you’re married. Quit bashing adult life; it isn’t that bad. Flaunt what yo mama gave ya. But don’t give it up! This is the time to pull out your morals and values. These are the questions that have guided me in my later years of life and I wish I had lived by them sooner. Ask yourself, will this act bring shame later? Can I talk about it and not feel bad? Consider these questions every time you’re faced with a difficult decision.

Tavi, I am a transfer student. I feel as though the community college I last attended didn’t prepare me for a university. My social life is gone and has been replaced with extensive reading and assignment deadlines. I do not want to disappoint my family but I just feel like maybe this is not for me.
Q
I can relate to your situation. I am a transfer student as well. The work load at Mckendree requires more than what is expected at a community college. I work 25 hours a week, I’m enrolled in 18 credit hours and I have six children. Talk about not having a social life. The key is to go to class and complete all your assignments. You should also set up an appointment to meet your advisor if you haven’t done so. If you keep looking over the ledge you might just fall. Take life one day at a time.

Womens Golf: By Brian Hart Sports Writer

Ladies prepared for a challenging season.
The mental demands of golf are fierce, and McKendree Women’s head golf coach Cindy Mackey knows in order for her team to have a successful season, they need to be
mentally tough. That is why the cornerstone to Mackey’s philosophy this year and in years past has been mental toughness. “We talk about it [mental toughness] on a weekly basis,” senior co-captain Brittany Kellerman said. According to Kellerman, the mental approach to the game has helped her and the team to stay calm and relaxed out on the golf course. “With me she is very big on visualization,” added Kellerman. In the first tournament of the year the women’s golf team placed sixth and Kellerman lead McKendree with a score of 84. Other members of the team are seniors Miranda Gibson, Bethany Hinkle and Renee Ryterski; junior Kate Schellinger; sophomore co-captain Stephanie Harris; and freshmen Casara Marsaglia, Emily Williams and Breck Ahlers. Coach Mackey is assisted by Jessica Smith, who has experience playing on the college level. Besides instilling mental toughness, Mackey also does everything she can to develop her players through unique experiences, like traveling to Florida and Alabama to play different courses. Last month the women’s golf team traveled to Chicago to watch top LPGA players like Paula Creamer, Natilie
Gulbis, and Kristina Kim in the Solheim Golf Cup. The unique experiences Mackey offers her players allow them to not only become better golfers, but to become better in all facets of life. “The things we’ve introduced won’t just help them in terms of their golf, but also in how they conduct themselves in a lot of different situations,” says Mackey. In fact, their mentality has turned the heads of the NAIA; last year, McKendree Women’s golf team won the NAIA-Buffalo Funds Five-Star Champions of Character Team Award. In terms of this season, the team is looking to move up in the NAIA rankings. However, a new challenge presents itself for the women’s golf team, as they are now competing in an unaffiliated conference in the NAIA. Top ranked NAIA teams like William Woods and Bethel College will become common rivals for the Bearcats. “I think this presents some challenges for them but I think they will hold up pretty well,” says Mackey. Overall, she believes that with a lot last year’s players returning, good things are in store for the year. “This year is going to be a good year. This team has worked hard and predominately the top five are made up of seniors who are working hard to make this a The Women’s Golf team stops for a photo with the Solhiem Trophy. very meaningful year,” Coach Mackey said. Mens Hockey Bearcats ready to take SIUE By Chelsea Arnold Assistant Editor
Bearcat Hockey begins the new year with a third drive for the League Title on Oct.2 with the first home game against SIUE. According to junior Kyle Clark, the boys are looking forward to playing SIUE, one of their strongest rivals. “Yeah, we beat ‘em 13-3 and 8-1 last year and we’re lookin’ to put a bigger hurt on ‘em this year,” Clark said. Coach Bill Misiak is ready for another strong season, and is excited about the entire team roster. He says that because McKendree ‘plays as a team, and win and lose as a team,’ this mindset has resulted in Together Every player Achieved More.’ “I would like to thank the fans for supporting the ice hockey program for the past five years, their dedication is very much appreciated by the players and coaching staff,” he said. “Our team motto this year is “Three-peat”! We will not settle for anything less!” In terms of rivalries, SIUE, ISU, Mizzou are sure to be the most exciting games of the season. However, when the Bearcats have won Division and League Titles for two consecutive years, what team wouldn’t consider McKendree a rival?
This season’s captain is Chris Donahue, with David Coleman, Z.T. Evans, Mike Stier, and Charlie Donze as co-captains. Game one against SIUE starts at 7:30pm on Fri., Oct. 8 at the Fairview Heights Ice Complex, with a follow-up game scheduled for Sat., Oct. 3 at 3:00pm.
