WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

We’re Here for You in 2021 As our motto affirms, McLean Community Center (MCC) is “The Center of It All.” MCC serves as a constant for this community. As we enter a new year with all the unknowns it will bring, you can be sure of one thing—we will be here to serve you. The Community Center and the Old Firehouse Center facilities are open, and the MCC Governing Board and staff have implemented a variety of measures to ensure the health and safety of visitors. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly been a challenge in many ways; however, we remain committed to offering our patrons enriching programs and services, both virtually and in-person. Keeping healthy is made easier when you have the information you need to make good decisions. Our annual Be Fit McLean health fair will return in January in a virtual format. Tune in to find out the latest science on several health-related topics and learn about preventive practices you can take to ensure more vibrant health for you and your family. We are also concerned with the health of our earth. Join us for McLean Celebrates Earth Day 2021 in April, where you can participate in a unique outdoor environmental action event to reduce, reuse, recycle. All you will have to do is drive through our parking lot! After completing a successful series of acclaimed Drive-Thru Drama performances, The Alden’s staff is busy planning events for the winter and spring sessions, all with your safety in mind. Purifi, LLC, treating the MCC lobby.

MCC Contracts with Purifi, LLC, for Biopurification Services

As the area enters flu season, and as the efforts to contain COVID-19 progress, the McLean Community Center (MCC) is contracting with Purifi, LLC, a McLean-based bio-purification company, to receive a service that effectively reduces the risk of viral and bacterial transmission and infection. MCC received the first treatment in October. The treatment is administered through spraying a very fine mist that is safe for humans and animals and kills viruses and bacteria on surfaces for 30-60 days. The spray does not leave a residue and is safe to the touch within 20 minutes of the application. This coating application provides enhanced protection by the sustained killing of 99.9% of viruses, including coronaviruses on surfaces. The coating is highly durable and remains effective and active on high-touch surfaces such as door handles, tables, chairs, countertops, and desks, even after frequent cleanings. According to the company, this bio-purification service provides persistent control and protection from the risk of community, workforce, vendor and patron infection from surfaces and HVAC systems. “We are taking these additional steps to limit the risk of virus transmission from contact surfaces in our facility as a protective measure to our staff and our patrons entering our facility,” says MCC Executive Director George Sachs. “In addition, the McLean Community Center is continuing its enhanced daily cleaning protocols in order to protect our patrons and employees.” These protocols are in line with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Fairfax County Health Department and include asking all who enter the facility to wear masks, practice social distancing, to wash and sanitize their hands and to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms before coming to MCC. 2021 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE FY2022 Budget Proposal Goes to Fairfax County The McLean Community Center’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2022 (which runs July 1, 2021–June 30, 2022), was approved by the MCC Governing Board at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The tax rate to support the Center was maintained at 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed real estate value. Now, the County Board of Supervisors will consider the Center’s budget, with a projected final approval happening in April. You can view highlights of the FY 2022 budget online at www.mcleancenter.org.

Fill Us In at Our Public Hearing on Programs The McLean Community Center Governing Board wants to hear from you. The board is holding a Public Hearing on MCC Programs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, at the center. The Governing Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow the public hearing. Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, the Center’s tax district, are encouraged to attend the hearing to voice their opinions on current offerings at the Center and to make suggestions for future programs. The hearing is the first step in planning for the FY 2023 budget cycle, which begins July 1, 2022. The Center is home to the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and includes the Old Firehouse Teen Center. Help Wanted: MCC Governing Board Election Begins in January Are you a tax district resident who appreciates the excellent quality of life that this community offers? The Governing Board of the McLean Community Center (MCC) is looking for individuals who can contribute their creativity and leadership skills to help shape the ongoing vision of the Center. If you enjoy meaningful and thoughtful civic participation, please consider serving on MCC’s Volunteer Governing Board. The board election process for 2021-2022 will begin in January.

Whether you are a newcomer to McLean or have lived in the area for years—your perspective is important. Contributing your skills on MCC’s Governing Board will prove rewarding. Interested? The 11–member volunteer board is comprised of nine adults and two teens (ages 15–17) who live in Small District 1A-Dranesville. Monthly meetings are held on weekday evenings from June through May. Three adult seats are open (to serve for a three-year term); two youth seats are open (to serve for a one-year term). Youth members represent the student populations of the McLean High School and Langley High School districts, as well as private school students who reside in these districts.

CENTER NEWS An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Sarah Schallern Treff Performing Arts Director When thinking of qualities that describe a great employee, being invested is one that comes to mind. That is exactly what Performing Arts Director Sarah Schallern Treff takes pride in as she finds herself in her 13th year with MCC and The Alden Theatre. “I’m in it for the long haul,” she said. But for Schallern Treff, it’s about more than just longevity: it’s about the work she does and the people she does it for. “I love our patrons. McLean residents are so intelligent, curious and discerning, and being part of a community center means that we get to develop personal relationships with them.” Schallern Treff oversees The Alden’s staff and the budget for the performing arts department. She also books acts for adult audiences, liaises with community art groups that utilize The Alden, and assists in the theater’s marketing effort. “Something that’s exciting to me about my job is the variety,” says Schallern Treff. “Not just in my job duties, but in the variety of artistic disciplines we present.”

Schallern Treff holds a Bachelor of Music degree from DePaul University and a Master of Music in Opera Stage Directing from The Florida State University. She originally came to the area for apprenticeships with Wolf Trap Opera but stayed after her second summer to work in the development department of a national opera association. She led the music department at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington for several years before coming to MCC. In between, she directed a show for MCC’s “sister” agency, Reston Community Center’s theater camp. “We really are like a family [at MCC],” noted Schallern Treff. “We learn from each other, and more than anything, we have fun. I think that’s what makes us successful professionally—enjoyment in what we do and in each other.”

STEWARDSHIP: We recognize the role entrusted to us to be good stewards of MCC’s funds, resources and assets.

A trained performing artist, Schallern Treff also enjoys the visual arts. You can find her unwinding with a little painting in her free time. “I haven’t painted since I was a kid,” she admits. “There’s something very relaxing about it. I’m no Bob Ross, but I enjoy it.” Additionally, she and her family—husband Terje, and stepdaughter, Lili—can often be found indulging in their “mild obsession” with their cat, Popo.

This drive-through, outdoor, environmental action event provides a convenient way for McLean residents to better the planet. Several local community businesses and organizations will provide four key facets of environmental health in the spirit of shredding, reusing, recycling and planting. CLASSES Instructor Spotlight Justin Nguyen, Sports Instructor

It’s been said that it’s about the journey and not the destination. That’s exactly the way Sports Instructor Justin Nguyen approaches his role with MCC. Leading First Strike soccer classes for children ages 2-5, Nguyen has found a way to channel the passion he has for teaching—the same passion he’s had since he was 19. “My best friend was teaching at the time at Spring Hill ReCenter,” he said, “and I thought it would be awesome to teach with him because I loved sports. I quickly realized that working with kids was the best job in the world and super rewarding. I never looked back!” Nguyen oversees both the Minis Club and the Kids Club soccer classes at MCC, and he will be the first to tell you it’s a far cry from running a daycare. “I get to work with kids as young as two, and trying to figure them out is probably the most challenging and fun part of teaching here at MCC. Sometimes my lesson plans work, and sometimes I throw them out, which is great because I am always learning from my students.” Learning from and interacting with special people is what Nguyen appreciates most about working at the center. “What I love about MCC are the families that I come in contact with. The bonds shared between the young students in the class and interactions between the family members are great!” Currently in his second year with MCC, Nguyen graduated from nearby George Mason University and serves as the Creative Director of JST Athletics and Dance, LLC, a youth sports and dance instruction company. “I've taught hip-hop dance for as long as I've been teaching sports,” noted Nguyen. “It’s the other passion of mine.” The second of four children, Nguyen credits his parents for encouraging him to do what he does daily. “[My parents] have always provided me with the opportunity to chase my dreams growing up,” he said. Young dancers are introduced to a classical ballet syllabus incorporating magical variations and dance class etiquette. Cognitive skills of counting, sequencing, spatial awareness and immersion in the French language are introduced in this class. Bringing her background in physics and psychology together with her instinctual and natural talent for making art, Shanthi Chandrasakar creates works that deeply explore the cosmic forces at play in our universe.

McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is a nonprofit organization that presents the visual arts program for the community at the McLean Community Center (MCC), thanks to a public/private partnership with MCC and Fairfax County. MPA presents exhibitions of contemporary art and provides education in the visual arts through a program of classes for children and adults, as well as lectures, tours and ArtReach, an outreach program that brings school children and other groups to the gallery for educational programs. MPA presents art classes at MCC in the DuVal Studio and online through ZOOM.

TABLE THE OLD OFFIREHOUSE CONTENTS

THE OLD FIREHOUSE The Old Firehouse Center (OFC) provides an incredible experience and safe atmosphere for 7th-12th graders. Participants will enjoy exposure to new recreational activities and develop social skills under the supervision of professionally experienced staff members who facilitate organized activities, daily clubs and trips. Teens can enjoy their time at the Old Firehouse after school, during school breaks and at our Friday night activities and trips.

2021 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE After School Program 2:30-6 p.m. When Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) return for in-person classroom learning, the OFC will be open to accept students in the After School Program. (In accordance with the FCPS proposed pandemic schedule **Subject to Change**)

Teen Game Night

• Daily snack and drink. • Access to our computer lab. • Homework/study assistance. • The Old Firehouse provides transportation from Cooper Middle School and Langley High School. FCPS buses provide transportation from Longfellow Middle School and McLean High School. • Various daily club activities including Games, Fitness, Cooking and Art clubs.

Activity No. 4731.321 Come play some of your favorite board and party games with some friends and the Old Firehouse Staff. From giant Connect Four to hopscotch, we have the game for you. Old Firehouse Learning Connection*

*Program will be available if virtual learning continues into winter. Old Firehouse Learning Connection is a supervised e-learning program held at the Old Firehouse Center, supervised by our staff, designed for students in 5th–10th grades. The program will provide a supervised environment for students to complete their school-led virtual instruction. Staff will provide limited socially distant recreation opportunities for students during their breaks. Program waivers, participant contracts and additional information will be sent to all registered participants prior to the start of the program.

• Parents and/or guardians must transport students to and from the OFC Learning Connection program. • Students must bring their own laptop (with charger), and headset/headphones. Please bring computers or devices fully charged each day. • Students must bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks. A water fountain/bottle filler will be available for students. • There will be two adult staff supervising the students. These staff are not teachers and have no teaching certificates or experience teaching. Their background is in childcare and activity facilitation. They will help students in a limited capacity with their schoolwork. The main task of program staff is to provide a supervised environment for students to spend the day completing their schoolwork. • Wi-Fi will be provided. Transportation will not be provided.

Old Firehouse Facility Rentals

Have your next party or event at the Old Firehouse! Reservations can be accepted six-months in advance, on a first-come, first- served basis. 2021 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE Registration Processing Easy Ways to Register ONLINE

Just click on the pink “Register” button in the upper right corner of any page of our website, or on a seven-digit activity number, which will link you to our online registration system. Online registration begins at midnight on the registration start date.

MAIL

Mail a completed registration form with payment in the form of a check, money order or credit card to: McLean Community Center, Attn: Registrar, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, VA 22101.

IN PERSON/DROP OFF

You may register in person at the Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration box.

Registration Begins

• Registration begins on Monday, Dec. 7. All mail-in and drop-off registration forms received before the designated registration date will be processed on the designated date. • Instructors may not accept registrations or extend verbal commitments.

Payment

• Payment is due at the time of registration in the form of a check, money order or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa) number with expiration date. If paying by check, please make payable to McLean Community Center, unless otherwise noted. • Receipt confirmations will be emailed. If no email address is provided, receipt confirmations will be mailed.

Senior Discounts

• Senior citizens (age 60 and older) are eligible to receive a ten (10) percent discount on classes except where noted.

• Senior discounts are not available for tours and other activities.

Materials Fee

• All materials fees are due to the instructor on the first day of class, unless otherwise noted.

Class & Activity Refund Policy

• All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund. Refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

MCC Fee Waivers

• MCC offers fee waivers to qualified tax district residents requesting to participate in programs or services at a reduced rate or at no cost. For more information on how to apply for a fee waiver, contact the MCC Registrar at 703-744-9365, TTY: 711, or by email at registrar@mcleancenter.org.

• The class program follows Fairfax County Public Schools’ inclement weather policy. In case of inclement weather, check our website (www.mcleancenter.org), call 703-790-0123, TTY: 711 (hearing impaired), or listen for cancellation information on local radio stations. • Classes canceled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled, if possible. If not, a prorated refund will be issued.

ADA Accommodations

• To make arrangements for accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), please mark the appropriate box on the registration form so the Center may contact you to ascertain your needs. • Request should be made no fewer than 14 working days prior to the start to of the activity by calling Christian Hayes at 703-744-9351.

Restrictions

• Once a class, camp or activity is in session, refunds may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Programs Director and the Registrar. Medical requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s note (verification).
