Chem Eng today

At the Department of Chemical Engineering, we focus on innovative problem-solving, hands-on experience, laboratory investigation and inquiry, innovation, inclusiveness, sustainability, and global impact to give our students the skills they need to become the leaders and the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Recognizing that student success in the workplace depends on their attitude and leadership values as much as it does their technical competence, we have identified seven key characteristics that we cultivate in our students and faculty members, as captured with the acronym PROCESS. So we ask our students throughout their time at McMaster to trust the PROCESS!

Professionalism Responsibility Ownership Curiosity Empathy Selessness Service

PROCESS encompasses a departmental culture fostered by students, staff and faculty. Our faculty strives to help our students become versatile, engaged and marketable employees across all industries, helping to set them up for success beyond McMaster.

The PROCESS is delivered through personal and peer reflections the moment students enter our department and until graduation. We ask students to monitor and discuss their growth as it relates to the PROCESS and we ask students for their feedback on the support that they have received from the department to help them do so.

“As one of the founding ve departments of the Faculty of Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering leads the way in preparing future-ready students who can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.”

Undergraduate Degrees

BEng, Chemical Engineering

BEng Biosciences: Chemical Engineering with core Biomedical Science courses BEng Management: Chemical Engineering with the core requirements of a Commerce degree BEng Society: Chemical Engineering with a multitude of options BEng BME : Chemical and Biomedical Engineering program with core Chemical Engineering courses and project- and design-based courses from the iBioMed program.

Graduate Degrees

• MASc, Chemical Engineering: A thesis-based program • PhD, Chemical Engineering: A thesis-based program

Areas of Specialization

Bioengineering: A unique 5-year program leading to a Bachelor of Engineering and Biosciences. Combines the core chemical engineering undergraduate curriculum with courses from the life sciences (biology, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry of macromolecules, cellular and molecular biology) as well as specic courses (bioreactors and bioseparations) related to bioengineering.

Polymer Materials and Manufacturing: Provides knowledge and skills to enable engineers to address manufacturing problems and processes in interdisciplinary team-based problem-solving activities. Courses from Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering supplement and enrich the Chemical Engineering curriculum.

Process Systems Engineering: Provides knowledge and skills that enable engineers to analyze integrated processes using mathematical methods and computer tools. PSE analysis is based on engineering fundamentals and seeks to design and operate systems that achieve desired steady-state and dynamic behaviours, including safety, consistent product quality and high prot.

Water-Energy Technologies: Provides knowledge and skills to enable engineers to address issues related to water and energy provision in our lifetimes and beyond (sustainability), as well as at the intersection of water and energy.
