WELC T
hank you all for attending this special awards celebration, in which we will recognize the extraordinary research and education projects pursued by the McMaster Surgical Associates. Your excellence in the fields of education, education research, innovation, clinical research, and basic science continue to help push both surgical practice and surgical education forward. Dr. Mohit Bhandari has done a wonderful job in organizing this great event. As surgeons, we both understand the many obligations that each of you have, so we are incredibly grateful that you were able and willing to take time away from your busy schedules to enjoy dinner with your colleagues.
While tonight’s winners should take great pride in their awards, it’s important for nominees to know that, win or lose, McMaster University’s Department of Surgery recognizes all that you do. At the end of the day, this celebration is intended to be a social gathering held in good fun, while also recognizing your continuous contributions to our Department’s outstanding education and research profile. Again, thank you all for not only gathering tonight, but for the work you do on an ongoing basis. You collectively define what it is our Department strives to be: a global leader in evidence-based research, education, and patient care. Enjoy the evening, and keep up the fantastic work!
Dr. Susan Reid, Department Chair

COME! S
mall grant programs are vital to the success of university research programs for several reasons. First, they encourage early career investigators to gain valuable funding that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. Second, they promote a wide breadth of research ideas and teams. Third, these types of grants help support a strong culture of research and evidence-based surgery. And, finally, grants like this allow small research programs to develop into larger ones, leveraging early stage grants toward national-level funds. Since their inception back in 2007, the MSA grants have supported a remarkable 204 principal investigators with almost $5 million in funding.
M
cMaster Surgical Associates (MSA) provide invaluable support to members of the MSA across all 11 divisions of the Department of Surgery. This support takes the form of education and research grants that assist faculty in carrying out a wide range of relevant and impactful studies in the areas of clinical research, basic science, innovation, and education. The work our faculty carry out in these fields continues to contribute to changing patients’ lives through a greater understanding of the mechanisms of disease, and to improving surgical outcomes and the quality and standardization of patient care.
Tonight, there are no losers as we celebrate and congratulate every grant recipient, as well as the teams that supported them. Thank you all for gathering here for the first-ever MSA Awards!
It is therefore with great pride and pleasure that I acknowledge the surgical faculty, past and present, who have received MSA awards. I would like to thank them for the high level of commitment they bring to their research endeavours, and for their important contributions to the department’s legacy as a leader in the provision of evidence-based surgical education, research, and patient care.
Dr. Mohit Bhandari, Associate Chair, Research
Dr. Stephen Kelly, Associate Chair, Education

MSA AW WHAT IS MSA? MSA is an acronym for the McMaster Surgical Associates. MSA is comprised of faculty from McMaster University’s Department of Surgery who work tirelessly to push practice forward through cutting-edge research, education, and clinical practice. MSA members are eligible to apply for exclusive grants through the Department. These grants help faculty perform education and research activities relating to medical undergraduate education, surgical postgraduate training, and surgery-related CME, while also helping put McMaster University on the map for being a global leader in research and innovation. WHAT IS THE MSA MERIT COMMITTEE? The MSA Merit Committee is a small group of McMaster faculty who administer the MSA grant process. Comprised of Drs. Andre Lamy, Jacques Tittley, Mohit Bhandari, Michelle Ghert, Stephen Kelly, and Susan Reid, the committee meets twice annually to oversee process and ensure equity of all related grant competitions. They also vet any suggested meritable activities, and vote upon and set merit points for the year.
