r. Olufemi (“Femi”) Ayeni is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University. Dr Ayeni completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at McMaster University. Following this, he completed two years of additional Sports Medicine Fellowship Training, first at the University of Ottawa/Carleton Sports Medicine Clinic and then at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. While in New York, Dr. Ayeni was the Assistant Team Physician for the New Jersey Nets (NBA) and Iona College (NCAA). There, he also received dedicated training in Hip Arthroscopy. In his first year of

practice, Dr. Ayeni spent a month in Europe as a Visiting Fellow in Hip Preservation and Hip Arthroscopic Surgery at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland and at Orthopadische Chirurgie Munchen in Munich, Germany. He is currently the Medical Director for the Hamilton Tiger Cats football club (CFL) and VP of Research for the Arthroscopy Association of Canada. Dr. Ayeni’s clinical practice focuses on athletic injuries and non-arthritic conditions of the hip, knee, and shoulder in adolescents and adults. His research focus is on outcomes research in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. We sat down with Dr. Ayeni to discuss his progress, goals, and life in research.
Talk a little bit about your role as a clinical researcher. With a clinical focus in sports medicine, my clinical activity drives my research. The connection between working surgically, clinically, and seeing patients everyday really drives my work as a researcher, and lets me focus on important questions — the answers to which could potentially change practice. I head up the academic side of the sports med-
researcher. He’s really helped tie me into what’s going on internationally. The leadership at Hamilton Health Sciences has also obviously helped me a lot. Dr. William Orovan and Dr. Susan Reid have provided me with tons of support and advice on how to balance clinical practice with research, making sure each one is complimentary of the other. The reality is, everybody I interact with has impacted me in some way.
for that edge; they wonder how they can bounce back from injury or improve upon their previous year, and those kinds of questions ultimately trickle down to you as their physician. As such, you have to understand the literature, understand their craft, be up on the latest research, and be able to provide answers that are substantial to them. The great thing about this is that, all of the questions that pro athletes have, well, the regular person has them
“Being successful in research comes down to one thing: asking important questions, trying your best to answer them, providing information that may some day move practice forward, and, along that way, recognizing everybody that has contributed to your findings.” –Dr. Femi Ayeni icine part of our Orthopaedic department. Dr. Mohit Bhandari has supported me and helped me learn how to do method-based research. Gradually, I began to run my own investigations and pose my own questions. The role is always evolving; it’s always exciting. You mentioned Dr. Bhandari as somebody who’s supported you. Who else has contributed to your development as a researcher along the way? Yes, Mo played a very influential role in my developmental stages as a researcher. He gave me a thorough understanding of how to properly do research. My PHD supervisor Dr. Jon Karlsson out of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden has also been very pivotal in my career as a
With a résumé that includes impressive staff positions with big sports teams like the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, how did you eventually find yourself branching into research? First of all, I played sports, so that’s how I gravitated toward sports medicine — my curiosity is intuitive. However, it’s my patients that really drive my research questions. When you’re dealing with athletes — especially those competing at the highest level — they come to you with questions that often require research to answer. ‘How can I optimize mobility?’ ‘How do I optimize performance?’ And, when dealing with athletes, the questions don’t stop — they become more frequent. Because everybody who competes is always looking
too. The weekend warrior might want to know which surgery will allow him to get back to playing squash with his friends; the high school student wants to get back to his or her routine as soon as possible. Athlete or not, you don’t have the luxury of guessing with patients — you have to have the facts or at least have ways in which you can obtain facts you don’t have, and that’s where research comes in. Of your almost-2,000 PubMed citations, which one is the most memorable? I would love to take credit for my citations, but every single one of them has been a team effort. I’m proud of them all, but my most memorable was a case report of a complication after a sur-

gery. I thought to myself, “this is a two-page paper discussing a unique complication… should be a slam dunk for publication.” Well, the paper was accepted by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). I was elated by that — my first JBJS publication! However, what I did not expect was they came back to me with 170 revisions. I couldn’t believe it! But, it made me realize that you can’t take anything for granted. When I finally saw it print, I was happy because I knew how much work went into it. This whole process taught me that, from concept to product, a lot of effort goes into publishing — even small case reports. How do you define success in the context of research? I would say being successful in research comes down to one thing: asking important questions, trying your best to answer them, providing informa-
tion that may some day move practice forward, and, along that way, recognizing everybody that has contributed to your findings. At the end of the day, if we’re able to move the ball a little bit forward — even an inch — then that’s a win. If everybody who helped feels like a contributor, then that’s a double-win. What do you have planned, research-wise, for the future? We’re researching to discover why younger individuals, particularly around the ages of 12 to 14, get into troubles with their hip joints. Something happens to adolescents around that age where they either develop pre-arthritic problems or they end up being just fine. So we want to know who develops the problems and why they do. Is it genetics? Activity? Body mass index? Growth velocity? There are all these contributing factors that we want to bet-
ter understand. So what we’re doing now, by way of peer-review funding, is collaborating with a group of surgeons and physicians from Brazil, Portugal, South Korea, the United States, and eventually the UK to study serial imaging of the hips of 12-year-old athletes and non-athletes. We’re tracking their activity and growth to determine what happens in the adolescent body that allows some individuals to become superstars who are pain-free while others experience problems. I think this will be an interesting way to screen and identify individuals who are getting in trouble with sports. In baseball, they have pitch counts to promote longevity — perhaps this study will result in new limitations like that for minor sports. Kids are specializing in sports so early these days — they’re doing too much, too fast, too soon. This global prospective cohort will hopefully help promote good health in the young athlete.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS News, notes, and events from within McMaster’s surgical research division
OSRS RESEARCH RETREAT This past June, the Office of Surgical Research Services (OSRS), led by Dr. F. Farrokhyar, hosted a retreat for Department of Surgery Research Staff at the University Club of McMaster. At the event, several distinguished surgical researchers presented on topics ranging from the values of conducting research in the field of surgery and the challenges researchers face to the success of research specific to McMaster’s Department of Surgery. All presentations were incredibly well received. A major highlight from the retreat was a lively discussion regarding challenges in research. The challenges, submitted by researchers anonymously to the OSRS prior to the retreat, were first discussed in small group sessions before they were eventually explored as part of a large group session. Some of the challenges discussed included developing a study protocol, networking, coordinating with the busy schedules of surgeons, abiding by
appropriate research rules and regulations, and a handful of others. The OSRS recognizes the importance of bringing together research staff for networking opportunities and advancement discussion. Dr. Farrokhyar and the OSRS team strive to support high-quality research across the Department of Surgery. And, based on the feedback they received from the Research Retreat, they believe that some topics need to be explored further. As such, the OSRS will continue to host Mini-Workshops on requested methodological and practical topics — follow the Department of Surgery on Twitter for more information on that!

The Department of Surgery is proud to congratulate Jonathan Bramson on his new role as the Associate Dean of Research for McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Bramson, a professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, previously served as Assistant Dean of Research Infrastructure. Some of Bramson’s initial objectives as Associate Dean of Research include creating new programs, developing stronger student programs, and building bridges that connect those at the applied end of medical sciences to those at the discovery end.
Dr. Ranil Sonnadara Dr. Ranil Sonnadara was recently awarded $84,976.92 from a 2017 Canarie Joint Security Project. The funding will be used to develop a suite of tools to give McMaster researchers detailed info about the traffic that is sent over Canada’s National Research and Education Network. The tools will help improve the effectiveness of the network (which is one of the ways that McMaster is connected to the outside world). The research will be conducted in collaboration with McMaster’s Computing Infrastructure Research Centre, of which Dr. Sonnadara is a Principal Investigator.
New Professors In 2017, the Department of Surgery promoted Drs. Michelle Ghert, Peter Lovrics, Yaron Shargall, and Marko Simunovic to Professor. The title is the highest rank that McMaster University can bestow, and it is conferred in recognition of outstanding achievement in education, scholarship, research, and clinical service. Congratulations to all four!
Dr. Kourosh Sabri Dr. Kourosh Sabri and the McMaster Paediatric Eye Research Group (McPERG) recently introduced their EYE-MAC vision screening project. It is a multidisciplinary approach for vision screening in schools by trained community volunteers, including McMaster students from various programs. Volunteers are trained to carry out vision screening tests on children through theoretical and practical training modules. Once trained, the vision screeners enter schools and provide vision screening to children. Children who fail vision screening are connected with local partner optometrists for follow-up and vision loss prevention. At this point, EYEMAC has provided vision screening to children in five schools and have five more booked for this year. Local health awareness program Chit Chat Hearing recently donated a bus to the EYE-MAC project, which will provide Dr. Sabri and co. with a distraction-free, standardized environment for vision screening as well as the ability to reach children in more remote and rural areas. Thanks to Chit Chat Hearing, and congrats to EYEMAC on such an ambitious endeavour! For more information about the EYE-MAC vision screening project, please visit mcperg.com.
