editor’s note

Volume 4, Issue 1 | winter 2014

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed, and my family’s tenure in this community now approaches four years. To many, this stat still constitutes us ‘newbies’. While to the newcomers (who still believe they have a ‘5-year-plan’), it may be impressive. But to me, reality has definitely set in this year: Fort McMurray has become home and our lives have taken root here.

Editor, Creative Director Kyla Getty 780-370-4900 ads@mcmurraygirl.com www.mcmurraygirl.com Thank You to our Contributors... (In order of appearance) Karen Larkin, Amy Hef, Kiran Malik Khan, Mayor Melissa Blake, The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Patricia Henderson, Emma Shortt, Miranda Beaton, Georgia Nicols, Carolyn Goolsby, Michael Marousek ...and to all who made this issue possible!

The whirlwind ride that we took in 2010 brought us to this place which gave us the wings to embark on a journey of discovery. We took a chance on a remote, new, address and on those wings we embraced the spirit of our region, created friendships, businesses, and a new home. When I first arrived here, I was told that “Fort McMurray is what you make it.” For some reason, my first thought was that I would probably have to take up a sport and join some sort of team. This was certainly not something that would come naturally, but I was willing to try anything to engage in the community!

Photography: Jordan Gooden Virginia Frank Photography Carrie Williams Photography A&R Worldwide Lorraine Proudfoot www.shutterstock.com

Little did I know then, that me – and my ideas – would be welcomed with open arms here. I would not be forced to go outside of my ‘comfort zone’ just to fit in – but that the inspiration from within was all I needed to create a happy, successful life here. It was the ideas that came from my authentic self that were catalyst to set my life ablaze with brightness, warmth and ever-expanding positive energy. The creation of the entire McMurray Girl movement (the magazine, events, and all) has brought thrilling opportunities, provided fabulous experiences and allowed myself – and any woman who believes in McMurray Girl’s mandate – to join the pulse of this vibrant community.

On the Cover: Singer/Musician, Amy Hef

Enlighten, Inspire and empower. The same inspiration is within each and every one of us, when we harness the energy of our authentic selves. What does the little flame inside of you burn for? What ideas get you tingling with excitement? Life is exactly what we make it, and we have the creative power to shape what it becomes. So why not nourish that flame and create something amazing from it? Why not allow that excited tingle to grow into a full-on force of positive energy? It’s 2014, the time is now – and McMurray Girl, this is just the place to do it!

authentic

YOU

Yes, this may happen, OR it may not. Maybe, just maybe, brilliant one – everyone is waiting for your authentic self to show up. By being authentic in each of these roles, we begin to bring ourselves – our full selves, to our work, to our roles and more importantly to our relationships.

Photos © Shutterstock / Helga Pataki / Aleshyn_Andrei

So what do I mean by ‘bringing ourselves’? It begins by knowing ourselves. I feel this starts with being true and conscious of our choices. It continues with us being aware of what we say ‘no’ to, and what we say ‘yes’ to in a whole-hearted way. It is also about having the confidence to release all the things we ‘should’ do and being brave enough to fully step into and embrace our heart’s desires – the soul’s calling. Being authentic does not release us from responsibilities – it allows us to accept them more fully and gracefully – and we begin to approach them with a full deep contented heart. positively you | by Karen Larkin

With 7+ billion people on this beautiful planet of ours, there are 7+ billion ways that authenticity reveals itself. You are unique, like everyone else – so this means that you, too, have a way of being authentic. Here is the definition of the word authentic in the context of our conversation today: au·then·tic - adjective (aw-then-tik)

Being authentic, being real, being genuine is never at the expense of others, it is always at the empowerment of others. As we discover, remember ourselves and step fully into our being we allow others to do the same, we become a beacon of inspiration for others. How do you know when you are being authentic? I asked this on my Facebook page and here are a few responses from experts:

: real or genuine : not copied or false : true and accurate You may be one, or all of these: a daughter, a sister, a friend, a lover, a partner, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an employee, a business owner – you get me. It can be so exhausting some days – keeping up with all of the societal expectations of ‘how you should be’ within these roles. What if I said that simply by being authentic, (by being yourself), your life might feel easier... might flow better? You may feel you are unable to be authentic – you may have a fear about it. With the many roles and responsibilities you have in this world by being authentic you may upset people or your life might shift or change significantly and yes, this can cause fear.

When your actions are met with a sense of gratitude, peace and eternal calmness. When you don’t have to ‘think’ about it from the head, you do or say what comes natural from your heart. When everything you do is aligned with your core values.

BRING YOUR TO LIFE THIS YEAR

Becoming Authentic Becoming authentic may feel like a breath of fresh air, a relief. Why? Being authentic is about allowing the real you to be and to become realized. Here is what I have been witness to in my 21+ years of working directly with women in the area of fitness, esteem & soul/body wellness. (They get a bit freaky about measuring up for the roles they are playing. Truth.)

Living an authentic life is one you live from your heart.

There are roles you are playing, a part in our dance with life. Your responsibility is to be YOU, first.

Then, bring YOU as your authentic self into the roles you play; as a Mom, a Wife, a Daughter, a Sister, a Friend etc; fully and completely. Is your stomach churning at this thought? Does it frighten you a little? Does it excite you? Will you stumble and make mistakes? (Gosh I hope so – isn’t that part of the fun?) I encourage you to stumble forward, bring a friend along, and support each other. Okay, so how do you begin – where do you start? Living authentically is a process – a moment-to-moment way of being. It begins with a series of choices, trusting your instincts, and being brave and courageous enough to allow yourself to be revealed; unmasked as it were. (Big breath here – Inhale – exhale – It is perfect, it is all perfect.)

Living an authentic life is one you live from your heart. So let’s begin – Here are steps to begin your journey into authenticity. 1. Begin a romance with yourself – fall back in love with the brilliance of you. When we fall in love we see all the wonderful qualities, the radiance of this person… let this person be YOU. 2. Understand and know what you value in life. 3. Begin a path of observation regarding your life. Pay attention to your feelings, your inklings, your intuition – what YOU love, and how you would love to live your life. Pay attention – and begin a journal. Record your journey of self-discovery. 4. Begin living from your heart of happiness. This may require stillness and deep listening to your heart. 5. Release (with love) the things (or people), which no longer make your heart sing. (You know, what no longer serves your life.) You will recognize these because they go against your values. They may drain your energy and you may begrudge them – release! 6. Get comfortable with yourself. Yup, all of yourself. All the brilliant aspects and all the aspects of yourself which may require a bit of polishing; own who you are. As you become more yourself, you give permission for others to do the same, to embrace their authenticity, as well. Being authentic is the gift you bring to the world.

From Fort McMurray to LA, Amy Hef’s authentic edge is what makes her unique... the fact that she’s rockin’ her dream career as a successful singer is what makes her a true McMurray Girl!

After having released her 4th album, Amy chats with us about her story, love of music – and strong roots in Fort McMurray. Amy is pursuing and achieving her dreams and goals... in a unique career that puts her authentic self in the spotlight.

amy

When did your love of music begin and when did you decide to make this your career? Guitars and other instruments were always in my house growing up as my oldest brother Doug and sister Cheryl played. I didn’t really feel any desire to play until I was watching No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” video and when I saw Gwen Stefani I thought to myself “I want to do that!”. I begged my parents, mostly dad, because I am his favorite (haha, Cheryl) for a drum set and eventually they caved. I put a hole in every skin of that drum set, I played it so much. Eventually, I taught myself to sing and play guitar but drums will always be my first love.

What does being ‘Authentic’ mean to you? Authentic is being you without any ego or fear of being yourself no matter what people may think.

Who is the ‘Authentic’ Amy Hef? The authentic Amy Hef is a constant work in progress. Being an artist my whole career depends on what people think of me. That is hard on the soul sometimes but it really makes me work and listen to myself. I’ve learned that if someone wants me to do something – whether its with my style of music or image that needs to be changed and my gut is screaming “No!” – that is my authentic self begging me not to cover it up. Its being vulnerable and human. I have a friend that says vulnerable is the new black and that is exactly what I want to portray in my music and in my everyday life.

Who inspires you? People that are a little quirky and not ashamed to be who they are. People who take risks.

Amy’s philosophies 18

On Dreams:

On Music:

When chasing a dream or a goal as long as you are working towards it, the only thing you can do wrong is stop.

Music is a universal language that can make people feel connected no matter what language you speak.

MY STORY

Describe your sound... As soon as I describe my sound as pop/rock people always roll their eyes at pop. Pop means popular and who doesn’t want to be popular? It’s Toe tapping, palm slapping, fun, party rock, pop lyrics with substance.

What do you hope people take from your music? I want people to not take it all too seriously. I want my music to hit that sweet spot in people that makes them move. Whether it’s to get up and dance or it’s one of my slower songs and the lyrics speak right to them. In that moment, they can connect with me – that we’ve all been there.

The best AND worst things about your career? The best thing about my career is that it’s my dream and it’s so much a part of me. It’s so rewarding that I can’t even imagine doing anything else. The worst part is, that it is probably the worst possible career to get into. It is so hard to have to continue telling yourself that ‘you are good enough to do this’ and that ‘it is possible’ when you get thousands of “No’s”. But, it only takes one “Yes” to keep going, even though there are no guarantees.

What’s a unique experience that stands out in your mind? I did a show in New Zealand not too long ago with one of The Bangles. We got to sit and talk for a while and she shared her experiences of starting out and what she has had to go through. After I played she said how strong my songs are and how tight my band is. Coming from someone who has had number 1 singles, and who I grew up listening to, was just a nice reminder that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be right now.

Finish this sentence “Being on stage is like...” ... I’m walking on sunshine, I feel HOT!

Photo © Jordan Gooden www.jordangooden.com

I moved to Fort McMurray when I was 12. It was my fifth move growing up, so I had no clue that my parents would make it their home and would still be living in the same house today. I loved growing up in Fort McMurray. Many of my friends from high school are still, to this day, some of my best friends. Growing up, I felt that there were many opportunities available to us. It's a place where one is able to try things… and if you fail, there is always another opportunity waiting. After high school, I worked for a couple years for my family’s business at the airport as a baggage handler and have had the terrifying experience of working in -55 celsius… that still haunts me! I moved to LA in 2007, enrolled in the Musicians Institute’s recording artist program. My brother, Doug, had been pursuing music in LA since I was very young. When I arrived, he was building a music studio. We started writing and recording together and finished an EP. However, at this point, I had no more money and had no idea what to do with this record! I ended up moving back to Fort McMurray, and within a week of arriving back, I had myself booked for months in advance – at any venue that would have me. Through these experiences, I have been able to learn so much about performing, selling merchandise and dealing with people – making a good living at it, too! I now live in LA and Calgary. I recently finished my 4th album, toured across Canada and to places in the states & New Zealand. I also just signed with one of the biggest agents in North America… all because I got to develop my craft and was so well received in Fort McMurray. That is why anytime one of the bars – or anyone in Fort McMurray wants me to do a gig, I almost always say yes. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the opportunity that this city has given me.

Where can fans and readers check out your music? I have done 3 albums under my real name Amy Heffernan, which is what most people still know me as from my single “Being Awesome”. My first album AH! – Amy Hef [under the name of Amy Hef] was released October 29th. It’s available on iTunes along with all my other records.

Tracy Meyers does not believe in making promises she can’t keep. This is one of the many reasons why her company Meyers Realty Inc o/a Meyers Management Consulting Group (MMCG) is an industry leader in real estate and property management services. Originally from Kingston, Ontario, Tracy has been living in Fort McMurray since 1979. School, marriage, raising her now grown children, and starting a career has kept her busy. “Fort McMurray is my home - then, now and always,” says Tracy. Even before returning to work full-time, she oversaw homebased initiatives like Amway, Mary Kay, and Avon. This, she says, gave her the ‘confidence and skill-set needed to build a strong foundation’ for MMCG. “In 2001, I started my real estate career with Century 21 Dynamic Realty then onto Realty World Classic at the time, now known as Royal Le Page True North Realty. In 2003, I started offering condominium management services and was fortunate enough to bring those contracts to the opening of my new company, in 2009.”

When it comes to work-life balance, Tracy tries to keep it all in perspective by prioritizing her day.

“Finding qualified personnel who want to work in town is a challenge. We offer above-average wages for this industry in a team-spirited environment, but turnover is a never-ending challenge. I meet with the organization’s objectives by offering training and guided support while keeping an open door policy in a grass roots setting,” explains Tracy.

“Customer service is key. But, I can only give what I can within a given day so just as long as the clients and customer investments are protected then I can honestly say, I’ve done my best. This allows me to solve the day’s events and relax when I get home,” she explains.

This team-spirit is achieved by “cohesively working together by helping each other toward our common goal of providing exceptional customer service in a timely and proficient manner. Being drama-free, having respect, and appreciation are the three best attributes to foster a like-minded team,” she continues.

Cognizant of the importance of community support, and having helpful family and staff, Tracy appreciates being surrounded by people who contribute on so many levels.

After hours Tracy relaxes with family and friends – her go-to stress-relievers. The outdoors is next on her list. “Whether it’s a snowy crisp day out on the snow mobile or sitting around the camp fire, if it’s outside, I’m happy.” Gratitude is also part of Tracy’s beliefs.

“It is all great when said and done, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of you and of course my teams, internal and external. I’m very fortunate to not only have my kids interested in learning what I do, but to have key members in the organization who possess exceptionally high standards and abilities.” As for doing business in Fort McMurray, Tracy feels the region is “the land of opportunity with a community spirited atmosphere.” However, she says employee attrition continues to be problematic.

“I would like to send out special thanks to my family for their continued patience, Stacy MacKinnon and Nikki Danyluk at Spoiled Rotten Beauty Boutique for hair and make-up in today’s spread. To Community Futures Wood Buffalo for believing in me and giving me a hand up when I opened the doors in 2009, the various loyal vendors we have had the opportunity to work with over the years, and finally, thank you to my clients, customers, agents and support staff for your patronage and loyalty in supporting Meyers Realty Inc o/a Meyers Management Consulting Group.”

“It was an honour for me to recite the Oath of Office and receive the Chain of Office at the Council swearing in ceremony. As I begin my fourth term, I am just as humbled and committed to serve you as when you first elected me Mayor in 2004. I look forward to working for you, and with you, to make Wood Buffalo an amazing place to live, work, play and stay!”

mayor’s note McMurray Girl - New Year, Authentic You Many of us lead fast paced lives, shuttling from home to work to countless activities in the community. Often we’re so busy, we fail to stop and smell the roses; or perhaps more appropriate this time of year, the fresh evergreen boughs! But every so often we have an excellent opportunity to stop, take a deep breath, and take stock of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it (among any other number of questions!). Certainly a great time to do that examination is the start of the new year. In fact, if I may don my professor’s cap for a moment, the word January has its origin in the Latin word for door. So if you’re taking an inventory of all that is you, January is a great doorway to a new beginning! And perhaps when you’re taking stock you may see that what you want to change isn’t who you are, but your attitude about yourself. Maybe it’s not a matter of changing, but of accepting who you are… and celebrating the authentic you. Yes, we should always strive for personal improvement; but at the same time, take a healthy approach this year and make a resolution to accept, love, and understand who you are. Each year offers new opportunities in Wood Buffalo and I am certain that 2014 will continue that trend. I look forward to working with our newly elected Regional Council, and all of you, in realizing this community’s potential. Let’s work together to make this an incredible year for Wood Buffalo! I wish all of you an amazing 2014 and as you flip through this edition of McMurray Girl I hope you find many great ideas to start the new year off right.

Sincerely, Melissa Blake, Mayor

Case in point: the Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre has two events you will want to pencil into your calendar. Between January 9 and 10 you can tour exotic locations at the Banff Film Festival. Then be sure to check out Les Miserables for what should be an outstanding run February 13 to 23.

With over 130 kilometers of maintained trails there is plenty to explore and when you need a break, you can visit the Doug Barnes Cabin. Used as a warm-up cabin for skiers in the trail system, it is open on the weekends throughout the day.

Be sure to keep tuned to all that is happening from an arts, culture and recreation perspective by regularly visiting the Municipality’s Wood Buffalo Culture blog at www.rmwbculture.blogspot.ca.

The Doug Barnes Cabin is available for rent for family functions, community groups, and corporate institutions. For rental rates and information visit www.ptarmigannordic.org. And learn more about our trail system by visiting www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/parks.

You wouldn’t think that someone responsible for clearing and removing snow for an entire Municipality would love winter. But it is definitely the favourite time of year for Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo employee Kelly Colbourne. As a Supervisor in Road Maintenance, she says, “We are busy with roads year round, but in the winter the work is constant and I like that.” Originally from Newfoundland, Colbourne’s father and grandfather worked in construction. “We lived in a camper at my grandfather’s worksite every summer, so it really runs in the blood.” She studied Civil Engineering Technology because she liked that kind of “hands-on” work and moved her family here in 2002 to join her mother. For a few years she worked with engineering firms, but eventually joined the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Road Maintenance team. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you not to do something because it is a male-dominated field. When I first worked here I was the only female on site with 25 men. Just be a little stubborn.” These days Colbourne manages her staff who hit the streets with seven loaders, four graders, two snow blowers and 17 trucks with plows. “The best part is the people I work with. That, and you never know what the day is going to hold when you go to work. We do both snow clearing, which is when we plow the snow and put it into windrows on the side of the road, as well as snow removal, which is when we scrape all the snow and ice curb to curb, pile it in the middle of the road and haul it away to the snow dump.” Colbourne and her team are ever vigilant as they patrol our streets looking for problems. “Our staff works 24 hours, 7 days a week in the winter. So, please be mindful and patient.”

TO HELP THIS DEDICATED TEAM MAKE THE ROADS SAFER PLEASE:

• Move your car off the street when you see the Street Maintenance signs. If not, your car will be towed but more importantly, the streets will not get cleared • Keep children off the windrows plowed up on the side of the road. Operators may not see them. • Don’t shovel snow back onto the street from your driveway after it has been cleared • Obey the signs on the back of snow plows that warn you to KEEP BACK 20 METRES. This is for your safety. Sand thrown from the plow can damage your car • Remember that when driving behind a snow truck, if you can’t see their mirrors, they can’t see you If you have a question about snow removal, call the Roads Hotline at 780-743-7859 or send an email to: Roads.hotline@woodbuffalo.ab.ca For questions about Provincial Highways 63, 881 or 69, call Alberta Transportation 780-743-7376

What every smart mcmurray girl should know about the law

By Emma Shortt

Imagine this situation… You’ve finally saved up the $40,000.00 you need as the deposit on your dream house. You’ve maintained a perfect credit history for years, painstakingly paying off credit cards, every month, never missing a mortgage payment... ... But then, out of nowhere, the ball drops… your mortgage application has been denied. Why? A $5,000.00 balance owing on a credit card in your name has ruined your credit score. But how is this possible?! The unfortunate answer is that the crime of identity fraud has been committed, and you’re the victim. What is Identity Theft and Identity Fraud? There are two crimes involved in the above scenario, both of which exist in Canada. Identity theft is step 1 and involves the collection of another person’s personal information without that person’s consent and with the intention of using that information in an illegal way. Step 2 is identity fraud, which is the actual use of the collected information for an illegal purpose, such as applying for a credit card with the stolen personal information and using that credit card to buy anything they want.

What types of information does an identity thief collect? An identity thief wants to steal: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Full name, including middle names, Date of birth, Social Insurance Number, Credit Card number, and Mother’s maiden name.

When you look at this list, how similar is it to the list of questions you have to answer when signing up for a new website? Eerily similar?

How does an identity thief get their hands on this information? 1. Social Media: what’s posted on your Facebook page? 2. Phishing: this is when you get spam email, supposedly from a reputable source (like your bank) asking you to submit your personal banking details to confirm if your account has been hacked, but the site it links you to is a fake site. 3. Garbage picking: where the thief physically retrieves the information from your garbage bin.

What can an identity thief do with the information they have collected? How about open a bank account in your name, max our your credit card with online purchases, or obtain government issued ID in your name with their photo? Now, I know McMurray Girls are honest individuals, but if you put your minds to it, I’m sure you could think of a devious way to use someone else’s identity information. And if you can think of it, imagine how these crafty thieves are putting that information to use.

How to protect yourself? 1. Take precautions when answering suspicious emails. 2. Dispose of papers with your personal information on them in a careful manner, like shredding. 3. Censor your social media accounts, either by limiting the amount of information on your pages, or by using the maximum privacy settings. 4. Try Googling yourself, or using PIPL.com to do a more in depth search, and see what comes up. What do you do if you’re a victim? Report it. The RCMP has a fraud unit and a website dedicated to identity theft and fraud. Your bank, insurance company, cell phone provider, etc. will have specific procedures for fraud in their businesses, so contact them and find out what you can do. DR. SONIA THIBAULT

JOURNEY OF

AUTHENTICITY | by Kiran Malik-Khan

The medical encyclopedia did it. Even before she could read, Sonia Thibault knew she would be a doctor. And, after her nightmarish dental visits stopped around the age of 12, she also knew what kind of doctor.

“My dental experiences were always negative because of the way things were done then. I was the worst patient too; clinging to doorways,” recalls Dr. Thibault, who hails from Baie-comeau, a small town in Quebec. She moved to Fort McMurray two years ago from Lloydminister. A missionary visit in grade one also solidified the call to service. Today, she has accomplished both. A dentist for over 15 years, she's part of a successful practice: River City Dental Centre, and has also travelled to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Africa for pro bono dental work. Dr. Thibault chalks up the social work to her anthropology courses at Laval University while studying dentistry. Life got busy, and giving back took a back seat until she decided to contact Wyclef Jean, the three-time Grammy Award-winning Haitian-American rapper, and later politician. “I had grown up with many Haitians in Quebec, hence the bond with their culture. At that time Wyclef Jean was involved with Yele Haiti, his charitable organization. Yele means scream for help; and I offered to bring in a mobile dental clinic to Haiti.” She also recruited doctors for the initiative. In November 2009 she set-up a preventative program in Haiti, along with distribution of toothbrushes and toothpastes. “We made sure the toothbrushes stayed in schools so the children were supervised. stopped the program, but I did send equipment to help,” Dr. Thibault added.

Fluent in English, French, Spanish, Creole (Haitian), and now learning Portuguese, Dr. Thibault is truly a citizen of the world. As a mother, she is also inculcating this love of multiculturalism in Salima, her 10-year-old daughter. Giving back on a local and global level is a lesson she teaches her daily. “I’m raising my daughter to respect all cultures and religions. I believe we learn more from people who are different from us than those who resemble us,” continues Dr. Thibault, who has also lived in Nunavut.

Locally, she is involved with the French Canadian Association. She emcees and serves as an interpreter for the group’s events. She has also been involved with the Multicultural Association. “I love Fort McMurray. I’m the kind of person who makes home everywhere,” she added.

A music and dance aficionado, Dr. Thibault was in a semi-professional West African dance troupe in university. The group would dress in the traditional costumes of Guinée-Conakry, a small West African country. The fondness for the group took her to West Africa, and most recently Ghana. “I was invited to Ian Hill’s (philanthropist and business leader) fundraiser for Let Them Be Kids, and somebody asked me if I was going. I make instant decisions; and my answer was yes,” she shares. She took her daughter along; and for two weeks this August set-up a dental practice. Over 100 children were examined, and the results surprised her. “I was fascinated to see how many children didn’t need much treatment. The area is rich in fruit trees, and they had access to basic nutrition as well as an unprocessed, starch-free diet, which meant healthy teeth,” she explained. Finally, empowering women is what Dr. Thibault stands for. She encourages believing in your dreams. “I like to empower women. Whether it is travelling the world to a make a difference, or anything else, believe in your dreams as if they have been achieved. Then you are more likely to succeed, which is why McMurray Girl speaks to me – it empowers women.”

WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION THROUGH LIFE? Throughout my life, I have been inspired by my grandmother Regina Boucher and my paternal grandparents, Jack and Madge Beaton, who were both university instructors. More recently, I have found inspiration in my relationship with my sons, Austin and Jax. I was taught by my family that a good education would open up a world of opportunities, and that it is equally important to gain real world knowledge. After I graduated from high school, I enrolled at Keyano College. I was unsure of my career path, but I thought the Business program would be a good start. Halfway through the year I had to put my education on hold so that I could take on one of the most important and rewarding jobs of all time, being a parent. My son Austin is now 10 years old and has been an inspiration to me since the first day I laid eyes on him. Becoming a mother at a young age made me see the world in a whole new light. I wanted a better life, not just for me, but for my son. In 2011, I received my Human Resource Management Diploma at NAIT, and I was also blessed with another son, Jaxson. Today, I know that Education is the Key to Success. I hope I can pass this message on to my sons.

HOW IS SUCCESS DISPLAYED IN YOUR LIFE? Success in life can be displayed in so many ways; success for me some days is getting the kids ready, and out the door on time! Finding a work-life balance can be a challenge, especially as a parent, so knowing I am managing my time and energy well is a success for me. Today, I hold the position of Human Resources Director for the Fort McKay First Nation. In my role I feel successful every day when I am providing opportunities to others. I see success when we are hiring for new positions, promoting capable employees, and developing our current employees through training and education opportunities. Sometimes I feel I am making a difference just by lending an ear and being a good listener. Every day is different.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH? I’m not sure if I chose this career path or if it chose me, but working in the Human Resources field definitely fits with my personality. Working with people and seeing others happy and fulfilled is what drives me. I started out working in Fort McKay as the Employment, Training and Education Coordinator. I am grateful I was given this opportunity many years ago - I am where I am today because of perseverance, and because of the many people who believed in me and encouraged me along the way. Through this position I was able to go back to school, gain experience in the HR field and at the same time give back to my community.

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? In my various positions at the Fort McKay First Nation, I have been able to offer community members employment and education opportunities, as well as encouragement and support. I have sat on a number of local committees, and have been involved in the planning and implementation of various community programs, events, and celebrations. I have also been involved in regional education committees through Keyano College and the Athabasca Tribal Council. I spearheaded a fundraising event for Haiti Relief in 2009, and have volunteered at many community events. Most of all, I try to be a good role model for my sons.

aries (March 21-April 19)

Career: You have a rebellious need to break free and be your own boss. Friction with partners and coworkers means you must be patient. Profits in real estate look good. Late in the year and into 2015 expect opportunities in sports, the entertainment world and the hospitality industry. Relationships: With Mars opposite your sign this year, you feel impatient with others. But you can’t change them. Accept this. After August and for all of 2015, expect new romance, flirtations and fun escapes. A major vacation is in the stars late this year or next.

taurus (April 20-May 20)

Career: You’ll hit the pavement running this year because you’re busting your buns. Something you've been working for since 2005 will bear fruit. Recognition will come now but big kudos will arrive in 2021. Great year for sales, marketing, writing, teaching, editing and acting. Late in the year favours real estate. Relationships: Personal and intimate relationships plus professional partnerships are touch and go. Some will end. Those that are meant to endure will undergo readjustments. Fortunately, your positive outlook is a blessing. Late in the year, family relationships are warm and cozy.

Career: This year is a good money year! You can earn more or find a better paying job. Your ability to actualize what you value will be magical. You will make major purchases and spend money on recreation, sports and children. Continue to work hard for recognition in 2015. Relationships: This is the best year in over a decade for love affairs, romance, parties, fun and schmoozing. (Perhaps more money makes you sexier?) Old crowds and friends are gone and you’re doing things you never dreamt were possible. Expect more for yourself!

libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Career: Your good fortune continues with lucky, moneybags Jupiter in your sign. And you feel it! A new life direction is opening up; do not let powerful partners hold you back. Since 2003, you've changed; and you can't go back. More money comes late in the year and in 2015. Relationships: You will demand greater freedom in relationships, perhaps through power struggles. (You stay in the wrong relationships too long.) Chaos and increased activity at home will create conflicts. Be patient and remember the power of a warm hug.

leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Career: This is a time of new beginnings because you have reinvented yourself (this began in 2005). Your bolder communication style will boost sales, marketing, teaching, acting and writing. After August, lucky moneybags Jupiter enters your sign for a year bringing wonderful opportunities and good fortune! Relationships: Your first duty is to secure your home base, which includes family relationships. However, take note: Feisty Mars makes you bold in all your communications. Go gently. Without realizing it, you could blow people away.

virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Career: In the next two years, you will have a change of residence or jobs or both. You gave up much around 2005 and began something new in 2007. You will work hard to earn money this year and gain accomplishments. Make these changes gracefully. Relationships: Disputes about the ownership of something you own might arise this year. (Caution about overspending on impulse purchases.) This is a popular year. Everyone wants you to sit at their table. Join clubs and groups because you are loved.

Career: Money might be tight this year. Nevertheless, your reputation shines! People in power and authority will promote you and give you public recognition. Your increased confidence makes you feel you are finally in touch with what you can do. Relationships: You demand more freedom in relationships, especially those that have restricted you. Beware: Mars in your sign, which lasts until August, makes you aggressive, assertive and bold! You will fight for your rights; plus make a great impression on others.

scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Career: Work-related travel continues. Grab opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine, the law and higher education. By autumn and into 2015, your reputation will shine! Expect promotions and high praise. Some might seek new work. You’re a star! Relationships: Be careful of someone who does not have your best interests at heart. This might be jealousy because your reputation is stellar this year. Love affairs are idealistic – but are they realistic? Since 2013, you’ve been on a new path, which makes you question relationships.

sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Career: You can get support from others via fundraising, loans or investments. Although you feel competitive with someone, you have the power to rally your troops. Continue to dismantle your life and let go of what is no longer relevant before you enter a whole new sandbox in 2015. Define your goals and go after them. Relationships: Late in the year and into 2015, your sex drive is stoked. Woo woo! Early this year, relations with people from other countries and different cultures will flourish. Don't be a loner. Stay involved because you will achieve your goals by working cooperatively with others.

cancer (June 21-July 22)

capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Career: This year you’re more ambitious than you’ve been in decades. You will work hard to achieve something. You need to be your own boss. Recently you have broken free from oppressive family ties. Fortunately, late in the year, financial support from others is available. Relationships: With Jupiter opposite your sign, relationships are blessed. New relationships will be with someone older or richer and worldlier. However, your newfound freedom must not be threatened. And you need to be free to pursue your personal projects.

aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Career: This year you will achieve cherished dreams – promotion, self-employment, graduation, whatever. You’re proud of your achievements. Work-related travel and a chance to explore opportunities in publishing, the media, higher education, medicine and the law are excellent. This is your hour! Relationships: Partnerships and close friendships simply get better as time goes on. First relationships with coworkers will benefit you; then later in the year, professional partnerships and intimate partnerships will blossom. You feel freer to express yourself.

pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Georgia Nicols' wisdom and wit have made her a popular international astrologer whose horoscopes & columns appear in many publications, nationally and internationally – from Elle Canada to the China Daily (Beijing). She makes regular TV appearances and radio appearances and has a popular website with more than a million annual readers. She is a monthly guest on Global TV, appearing the last Sunday of every month.

Career: The arts, sports, work with children, the hospitality industry and the entertainment world are blessed. All creative activities will flower. Late in the year and into 2015, you have a marvelous chance to improve your job or get a better job. Disputes about shared property are likely. Relationships: Your sex drive is super amped this year. (You will meet someone powerful.) But your sexual expectations might be too much from someone. Be careful. We are all frail mortals who take our pants off one leg at a time.

Why did this one-time movie and theatre critic choose this field? "To help people get a better handle on their lives - plus I find astrology absolutely fascinating!"

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s Third

Women of Inspiration Series presented by Syncrude Since the beginning of time women have been making huge contributions within their families, their workplaces, their communities and the world. Locally, there has been a real need to recognize Wood Buffalo’s hard working, critical thinking, intelligent and inspirational women. Women who challenge gender roles in the workplace and at home, women who break boundaries for the greater good in their communities, and women who do what it takes to help the causes they’re passionate about. These are the type of women that are recognized and celebrated through the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta Women of Inspiration Series, presented by Syncrude.

The overall goal of Women of Inspiration is to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers, and help create positive change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here in our communities.

Melissa Blake As Mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Melissa Blake has been an ambassador for the women of the region for many years. A mother of two young sons, Mayor Melissa Blake has not let the pressures of raising a family stop her from a demanding political career. Not only has Melissa been able to do the job of Mayor for three consecutive terms while juggling a family, but her increasing share of the popular vote in each election has proven her leadership ability. Melissa has also been honoured with several awards for her efforts, including being named twice by Alberta Venture as one of Alberta’s Top 50 Most Influential People, named a Global Television Woman of Vision in 2006, and several more. Melissa has served on several committees that have worked to assist aboriginals including those related to development, protective services, community services, and affordable housing. As the first person to win four consecutive terms as Mayor since the amalgamation of Fort McMurray and Waterways, Melissa has set a tremendous example both locally and nationally of what the women of this region can accomplish. With her continuing success Melissa has proven that female mayors can certainly succeed in industrial towns despite the gender stereotypes that we are sometimes exposed to today.

Leanne Patey In her role as President of the Wood Buffalo Chapter of Kidsport, Leanne Patey has demonstrated the importance of volunteerism and helping out underprivileged youth. She inspires girls and women by role-modeling initiative, passion, and purpose when helping others. Leanne moved to Fort McMurray in June of 1976 at a very young age. Kiran has written numerous pieces featuring our local people, events, non-profit groups, and more. She can be seen front and centre covering local events for a number of local publications, and it is through her strong social media portfolio that she is constantly promoting the region as a fierce community advocate. Kiran inspires women and girls to be strong, smart and bold by advocating for females in Wood Buffalo by recognizing their achievements and assisting with promoting them throughout the community. Last year she was honoured by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo with the 2011 Civic Award for Cultural Achievement, was named one of Connect Weekly’s Top 40 under 40 and one of the eight “fabulous, fantastic” Fort McMurray women featured at last year’s inaugural CentreStage event, and won the first ever McMurray Girl Big Spirit Ambassador Award. Having completed her master’s in communication and leadership with a 3.97 GPA, Kiran says that a Ph.D. is next on the agenda.

munity where many children were unable to participate in community sports and athletic activities due to a lack of discretionary family income. During her involvement in the community over the years, she saw that there were a lot of talented kids that were not being given the opportunity to blossom due to financial restraint. Since then, Leanne has been the driving force in establishing the Wood Buffalo Chapter of KidSport. Leanne is very passionate about the youth of today growing into the best person they can be, and to be a strong team player. Leanne’s mission was to change this barrier into an opportunity, and the money raised and the numbers of children served are a testimony to the change she has made to improve sport opportunities for disadvantaged youth.

fitTIPS

fit tips | by Michael Marousek

Happy New Year! This year, re-think your resolutions and instead, incorporate realistic goals into your lifestyle. Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre Trainer, Michael Marousek gives us 10 Fit Tips to put into action for 2014!

1

Be Active – Find a physical activity you enjoy and come up with a routine you can follow. Some form of physical activity should be done on a daily basis.

2

Set Achievable Short Term Goals – Goal setting is crucial in staying active. Set realistic goals that help keep you moving. Try taking the stairs instead of using the elevator, playing squash twice a week for an hour, or doing 10 pull-ups at the gym.

3

Get quality sleep – Avoid electronics for at least 30 minutes before you go to bed. It may be difficult to get 8 hours of sleep every night considering your busy life, but when your sleep lacks in quantity, make sure it's quality! Block out distractions; use earplugs and those room darkening blinds if you have to. Getting quality sleep is the single most important thing you can do for yourself.

7

Prep your snack ahead – Snacking can be a bad habit or a fantastic habit depending on what you make it. Unhealthy snacking and binge eating often happens when you are hungry and you don’t have a meal ready. Try substituting high caloric chocolate bars with nuts, granola bars, fruit, vegetables, or oatmeal.

8 4 Watch your nutrition – You are what you eat! Take care of yourself and keep an eye on your nutrition, choosing more natural products. Like our ancestors used to say – if you can’t grow it, you shouldn’t eat it. Avoid most canned goods - they're high in sodium.

5

Find a workout buddy – It's always more fun to exercise with a partner, whether it's your daily gym routine, swimming, or a walk with the dogs. You and your workout partner can keep each other in check when one of you loses his or her motivation.

6

Drink water – Lots of water. Don’t be afraid of water! Switching from your daily coffee or soft drink to water is the healthiest choice you can make... not to mention it'll save your money and your health. Soft drinks are full of sugar and coffee needs to be drank in moderation. Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed. Make it a habit to fill up your water bottle before you sit down at your desk.

Set Realistic Long Term Goals – Having a long-term goal that is important to you will be your spare engine to motivate you when you run out of fuel. It could be a weight loss goal, or it something as simple as playing with your children or grandchildren for an hour.

9

The world is your gym – Stay active during your work hours as well. Try setting your screen saver to go on every 30 minutes – use it as a trigger to stretch or do some light moves in the office (desk triceps dips, wall push ups, squats). Walk around when you are on the phone, or do toe curls or heel lifts when you are sitting down. An active lifestyle starts with small steps.

10

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail – Preparation is your key to success. Plan your days ahead, including your work schedule, your workouts, your meals, and even your trips to the grocery store. It will be easier for you to stay on track when you are always prepared.
