editor’s note - spring 2014

Volume 4, Issue 2 | march 2014

This is our Spring issue! January’s resolutions have had some time to either take root – or run their course. They may even be long-forgotten by now, if in the past months you’ve been swallowed back into the busy grind and old routines.

Editor, Creative Director Kyla Getty 780-370-4900 ads@mcmurraygirl.com www.mcmurraygirl.com Thank You to our Contributors... (In order of appearance) Naomi Keane, Olivia Keane, Kyla Getty, Karen Larkin, Mayor Melissa Blake, Patricia Henderson, Lisa Radetic, Selena Smith, Brenna Fynes, Olive Giroux, Andrea Jordan-Giarda, Carol MacDonald, Heather Brown, Priscilla Powder-Forbister, Jennifer Bedard, Heather Ann, Carolyn Goolsby, Sherri Herman, Lori Cyprian ...and to all who made this issue possible!

Are you living in a hurry? Are you living your life… or do you sometimes feel like IT is living YOU? When you combine living in this fast-paced day and age, our technology-fueled lifestyles and the day-to-day responsibilities of a busy McMurray Girl… you may find that time doesn’t always fly by JUST because you’re having fun. Sometimes time just flies by, and you don’t feel like you’ve even been living!

This Spring issue of McMurray Girl has been aptly themed: Spring into ACTION! Spring is a new beginning. It brings with it a second chance to renew those hopes you had back at the beginning of January. Three undeniable needs that we all share in order to feel alive, and thrive are: health, activity and action.

On the Cover: Naomi & Olivia Keane of Keane 2 Be Fit

In this issue, McMurray Girls will share their zest for healthy, active living. You’ll find practical tips, and local resources. Incorporating motion into your life doesn’t have to feel like work. This Spring, we urge you not to feel like a slave to your routine, but encourage you to add motion and action into your daily life – to feel more alive. I have found this in the Zumba studio. For me, Zumba feels more like dancing – doing something that I love – something that brings me joy. I barely notice that pushing myself actually feels good. Not everyone loves dance, some of you may enjoy a sport. When you find yourself getting active by doing something that you truly enjoy, the health benefits are a bonus! I urge you to find out what YOUR mode of action is… it may take trying some new things! Don’t give up if the first activity isn’t a fit. Find your next opportunity: walking or running with a friend, aquafit, yoga, directed fitness classes, or an adult sports team… Spring brings so many options in Fort McMurray.

If your excuse has always been your busy schedule – the answer lies WITHIN your schedule. Make your activities an appointment with yourself. You’ll find that time still may fly – but you’ll be able to look back at your life with pride that you’ve been LIVING… and living well.

Spring is about to bestow us with her full majesty. When the snow decides to fully melt away, in the blink of an eye – the Fort McMurray foliage turns an amazing shade – vibrant emerald with a ‘twist of lime’! After our long, cold winter – when Spring finally decides to arrive, in true Fort McMurray form, she comes hustling in… in a hurry!

feature Tell us more about about Keane 2 Be Fit’s Services. Our mission is to help the greater community reach their full potential in health and in lifestyle. We offer a variety of products and services from personal training, nutrition and wellness coaching, competition coaching and posing coaching. Olivia also offers event hosting services and social media marketing services. We are currently working on completing our first cookbook, and further developing products for our online store. This year, we hope to expand our clothing line and offer a variety of nutrition ebooks for our followers.

Tell us about the Keane Classic! The Keane Classic was born from my huge love for the competition world. Our goal has always been to create a platform for novice athletes, where they can celebrate their journeys and gain experience on stage in a fun and support atmosphere. The past two shows have grown steadily in size in both audience and athlete attendance, and we feel very blessed to be so well received. The 3rd annual Keane Classic Fitness Competition will be happening in early fall this year. We hope to see you there! For more information about registration and tickets, visit www.keane2befit.com/alberta-fitness-competition

What is it like working so closely with your sister? How do you keep your working relationship and personal relationship strong? The best part about working so closely together is that we both offer different strengths. Although, we may seem very similar, we both have very different skill sets. This has been a huge asset in our growth as individuals and as a business. We keep our working and personal relationships strong by understanding our individual needs and nurturing our differences. If we aren’t having fun together, then we aren’t doing it!

Naomi Keane

What is the accomplishment you are most proud of? I wouldn’t say there is specific achievement or award that we are most proud of, but rather the fact that we have always stayed true to our brand and true to ourselves. After many struggles, leaning curves, and periods of growth we still continue to move forward and continually challenge ourselves. There is something to be said for committing to entrepreneurship as a woman.

What does the ideal healthy/active lifestyle entail for you? It's a balance between what your body needs to function optimally and what heart needs to feel it’s best. Yes, there are some obvious factors such as getting enough sleep, eating clean, nutrient rich foods, and moving our bodies. But, if we are not “feeling” well or feeling excited about the process, we are most likely not going to stick with the program. With myself and my clients I really stress the importance of how you “are feeling” or how you “want to feel” as the driving force to creating and maintaining that ideal healthy/active lifestyle.

What’s on your workout playlist? Right now, during run training I am finding I enjoy using my iPod more than ever. I recommend taking the time to put together a favorite playlist for yourself. Anything you can do to make your workouts more enjoyable, the more likely you will stick with your program. Currently, I enjoy a mix of self growth audio books along with up beat house tracks in between. If you are new to self growth books and audio tracks I recommend Unlimited by Jillian Michaels as a great place to start.

MY STORY My love for wellness began years ago. I was a dance teacher before becoming a certified personal trainer and finding myself in the world of group fitness. Back then, I divided my time between teaching, traveling, attending university, and fitness competitions. I found myself struggling with maintaining balance and soon realized the necessity of self-care and rest. One of the biggest roadblocks I faced was bridging the gap between “real life” and achieving my fitness goals. The need was happiness and balance, and I was determined to create a specific and effortless system that was realistic, functional, scientific, but above all – got results! Today, my passion and aim is to empower others by teaching them this progressional system so they never feel restricted, but can achieve a sense of balance in their lives. Over the past three years in Fort McMurray, I’ve learned so much from my clients. I’ve learned about the unique lifestyle challenges that people here face. And, I have also learned about love. I truly believe it takes a village to make a vision happen! Without the support of a few special McMurryites I would not be where I am today and my vision for The Keane Classic Fitness Competition wouldn’t have been possible. We have received great continued support from Peter and Jess Allen, owners of World Gym, and also from Sarah and Ali Mrouwe, owners of Nutrition House. I couldn’t be more excited about this year’s 3rd annual Keane Classic. I am even more thankful to provide advice that begins with love, mindfulness, healthy eating, and movement – the solid foundations from which all great things in life begin.

We recommend a nutrient-dense smoothie in the morning. Take the time to juice a few days per week, and keep on-thego emergency snacks such as raw nuts and seeds and clean protein bars with you in your car, purse or desk at work. We also suggest getting to know your your local delis for quick, healthy on-the-go food options such as hard boiled eggs, fruit, veggies and hummus, clean salads, roasted vegetables and chicken.

TIPS

#1. A powerful blender. I really enjoy my Vitamix, but for half of the price I highly recommend the Blend Tech, and for an 8th of the price, I recommend the Ninja.

#2. Meal prep. Take the time, to put together two meal options per day along with a nutrient dense morning smoothie.

#3. Always have a back-up plan. Have a clean protein bar in your purse or at your desk at work, and know your best on-the-go food stops.

#4. Juice! So far I have been happiest with my Juice Man juicers. #5. Glass Tupperware. Glass is best to store your prepped meals.

hot healthy cereal Servings: 4 Prep Time: 25 mins Preparation Tips: Make sure you give the hot cereal enough time to cook through. The key here is LOW and SLOW!

Preparation: In a medium pot bring water to a boil and add cream of brown rice and quinoa. Cook on medium heat for 15 mins and stirring often.

Ingredients:

Add in flax seed, hemp hearts, vanilla, and cinnamon.

¾ cup cream of brown rice ¾ cup quinoa 2 tbs ground flax seed 2 tbs hemp hearts 2 cups water 1 tsp vanilla 2 tsp cinnamon HEALTH TIPS: Having a nutritiously dense complex carbohydrate first thing in the morning will help stabilize your blood sugar levels throughout the day, curb cravings, and help boost your metabolism. Cream of brown rice is a great alternative to oatmeal if you have a gluten allergy or wheat sensitivity.

1 cup fresh berries

Serve with fresh berries, nuts, and sweetener. Naomi’s Comments: Look for premixed hot cereals in your local health food store. There are many brands available that are gluten free and contain a variety of grains, nuts, and seeds.

4 tbs slivered almonds (nuts or seeds of choice) 4 tbs agave syrup (optional sweetener of choice)

quinoa greek salad Servings: 8 Prep Time: 30 mins Preparation Tips: Rinse quinoa in water before you begin preparing this dish, to avoid a raw or bitter taste. Quinoa is coated with saponin, a natural substance that protects the grain by repelling insects and birds. Ingredients: 1 cup quinoa ½ cup grape tomatoes, cut in half 2 sprigs green onion, chopped ¼ cup red onion, chopped ½ cup green and/or yellow peppers, chopped ¼ cup kalamta olives (water cured), chopped HEALTH TIPS: Not only is quinoa high in protein, the protein it supplies is complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa is also a rich source of the amino acid lysine, which is essential for tissue growth and repair. Furthermore, this complex carbohydrate is also gluten free.

¼ cup feta cheese (lactose free: substitute with goat cheese), crumbled 2 tbs lemon juice 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil 2 tbs balsamic vinegar

2 tbs fresh parsley, chopped 1 tsp basil, oregano, and black pepper Preparation: Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add quinoa and simmer for 20-35 mins or until quinoa becomes a light fluffy texture. Place in fridge and allow to cool completely. Make dressing by combining lemon juice, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil, and oregano. Whisk and set aside. Combine cooled quinoa, chopped vegetables, feta cheese, and drizzle with dressing (time saver: use premade salad dressing). Season with parsley and black pepper. Naomi’s Comments: I love this fresh light recipe! It's great to have on hand when you're stuck for time and is high in protein. It stores well in the refrigerator for about 4-6 days.

Pour mixture into a small bowl and place in fridge for 3 minutes until mixture cools and thickens but is still slight runny. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and pour chocolate into twelve equal disks. D R I N K W AT E R If there was only one healthy habit I could recommend for you to begin, it would be to drink a LARGE glass of water first thing in the morning before anything else. Drinking lots of water hydrates the cells and ensures proper regularity. Most people are “backed up” and mistake being tired and hungry for dehydration. Being dehydrated slows down your metabolism and the process of burning fat. DRINK UP!

MOVE YOUR BODY Do some sort of cardio for at least 20 minutes first thing in the morning to awaken the body and boost your mood. Some mornings, you may only be able to fit in a brisk walk, but it’s important to do something every day. Walking, running, yoga or boxing are all great options. Doing so will work to kick-start your metabolism and release the “feel good” hormone, serotonin into the body. This in turn, helps to relieve stress and increase overall self-confidence. Upon many other benefits, exercising in the morning can help you to be more alert, productive, and creative throughout the day. If you work in a high stress atmosphere, exercising in the morning is extremely beneficial. If you are more advanced, feel free to do a full, more intense workout in the mornings. Being intense AND consistent is great together, just make sure that you are consistent FIRST, in order to build the habit; especially in the beginning.

2 3

B E G R AT E F U L Practice gratitude by thinking of 5 things that you are truly grateful for everyday in the mornings. Give yourself a few minutes to dwell on them with an “attitude of gratitude,” possibly during your stretch after your workout. Although this can be tricky at times, especially as it tends to be human nature to notice all that is wrong or that we lack, I find that if we give ourselves the chance on a regular basis to notice the little things that are working, we can increase our overall sense of happiness, and create hope and optimism for the future, regardless of what is going on.

3healthier habits for

and happier mornings With busy, hectic, over scheduled lives, most of us are sleep (and nutrient) deprived to some degree. Truly, this is a result of the daily grind of our modern day living. We have long, demanding days that can result in the lack of proper nourishment, rest, and play leaving us feeling less then energetic and motivated to exercise and eat well. Instead, we find ourselves spending downtime sitting in front of the computer or watching TV while eating processed garbage (aka junk food). Once in awhile we decide we are going to eat clean and go the gym but in a few weeks, our busy lives take over and our motivation dies down. As a trainer, I have seen firsthand how stress, poor nutrition, and an overwhelming schedule can negatively affect one’s health and fitness goals. When we are so busy that we find ourselves forgetting to drink water throughout the day, skipping meals, and struggling through workouts, it’s time to “work in” instead of struggling to work out! For these reasons and to cultivate a healthier and happier lifestyle for the long haul, here are my top 3 simple habits to develop in the mornings BEFORE the hustle and bustle of the day begins. I have always found positive, long term results by incorporating small, incremental changes that compound over time with any part of life. This way you can feel successful everyday without any overwhelm... awesome!

BRING YOUR TO LIFE THIS YEAR

active mind. positively you | by Karen Larkin

Do you hear your mind when it speaks to you? Does it make comments on how you look, acted, or how you could be better? Thoughts travel across our mind and we have the ability to accept, change or dispose of them. Pay attention and become an active participant in your thoughts. Keeping our mind active is as important for our body as exercise. Why? Because our beliefs become our biology. A thought is only a thought… it can be changed. Choose thoughts that support your life. Thoughts that bully or berate you are signs that it’s time to become a partner with your thoughts and do some ‘spring cleaning’ of your mind – great leaders consider it to be the ‘power centre’ of your world. You may not be conscious of the 10,000+ thoughts you have each day, but there are ways to bring the mind back into alignment with your life, goals and choices. These methods activate the mind for your highest purpose – happiness. I will share with you a strong way to become active with your mind and its thoughts. In September, 2012, I began yoga teacher training. More than the postures and movements, yoga is a harmony of the mind and body. As I began to practice, it became apparent that yoga moves your mind through your body and releases pent up lingering doubts. The ancient teachings of yoga moved through my being and entered my mind. I was in love – my mind awakened, enlivened. Once I became more mindful in my practice, unsupportive thoughts arrived… as they tend to do with change. During my year of teacher training my life became filled with extenuating circumstances which had brought my energy elsewhere. When it came time to complete and graduate, defeating thoughts of doubt began to rise. I began to buy into the idea that I may not graduate – until a thought surfaced and I latched onto it! It said, “hey, you can do this, you have experienced success before while tired and living in overwhelm – pull from there”. 13 years ago when I graduated as a Personal Trainer from Mount Royal, my life was full. I was a working mom, raising young daughters, and was an active volunteer in our community. Surely graduating from yoga teacher training could not be as daunting as this! Especially now, our daughters are grown, I run my own business and therefore my own time. Surely it can be done. It will be done. So I began. I began paying attention to thoughts that were no longer serving me – and switched them. My thoughts became more affirmative – based on ability rather than defeat. Once I began

to feel the thoughts as truth – things shifted. Completing the graduation requirements was a challenge, yet I chose to do it! What have you decided to do this year? {Insert Desire Here!} Begin with your decision. If you have thoughts like: ‘I am too old, too slow, or too tired’, release them and create new ones! Challenge your negative thoughts. They may hold truth, but there is always a way to dispel them. Be conscious of the thoughts that hinder you and nip them! Replace them with affirmations – short, powerful statements to affirm your action or decision. The shorter the better. ‘I am weak’ can become – ‘I am strong’ or ‘I am too small’ can become ‘Being small makes me quicker’.

Affirmations are powerful when written, recited, sung, danced to, or simply repeated silently. Embody an affirmation by looking yourself in the eye. Yup, mirror work. The intention is to bring the new belief into the body, into the heart. Once you believe and embody the affirmation, you begin to act as if it were true, you live in such as way the affirmation is supported and realized. Play with your affirmations until they resonate with you. Moving into affirmation may, at first, feel a little fake and insincere. Fabulous is how you are intended to be in this world; own it. Become as active in the development of your mind as you are in the development of your body. It will change your life. Truth.

mayor’s note McMurray Girl - Spring, Into Action A new season is about to blossom and it’s a great time to spring into action. In fact, our wonderful citizens are responsible for many admirable actions all year round! Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Citizen Recognition Program Mayor and Council’s Toast of Champions. Hearing the unique and generous ways our residents give back to Wood Buffalo is always uplifting and inspiring. I want to congratulate all the nominees and recipients for their passion, dedication, and service to this region. Each one of them makes our community a wonderful place to live, work, play and stay. At this time of year especially, we all need to spring into action even more… when the snow begins to melt, it leaves behind no shortage of surprises, so let’s get out and participate in one of our spring clean-ups. They are a great green tradition that makes our region look amazing. Speaking of green, March brings us a day that is special to many of our residents: St. Patrick’s Day. While it’s not a public holiday here in Alberta, it certainly is in Newfoundland and Labrador. Given that we have a few folks here from the east coast, along with those directly from Ireland, it will certainly be a special day for many of our residents. To all of our folks of Celtic heritage, and those who are a just a little Irish one day a year, I wish you all a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Finally, I would also like to wish safe travels to those who may be heading out of town for Spring Break. I hope our young people find this a restful and re-energizing time and return to their studies refreshed and ready to close out the school year. Of course, I also ask that drivers be aware and drive with caution, given that there will be more people out and about. If you are staying in town, be sure to take some time to check out the different activities that will be going on and join in the fun here at home! Enjoy this edition of McMurray Girl!

Sincerely, Melissa Blake, Mayor

Breaking up can be hard to do… and dangerous too when it comes to a river break-up! The river break-up in Fort McMurray usually occurs in April each year and the Municipality wants its residents to be prepared. Know the risks for where you live, make an emergency plan, and have an emergency kit prepared that contains basic supplies for three days. And, even though you may want to get a closer look at all the ice-breaking action, play it safe and stay far away from river banks and shorelines. For more information about being safe and ready for River Break-Up, please visit www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/riverbreakup.

a passion for plants | by Patricia Henderson

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Parks Manager, Nina Caines, got her career start because she was better at killing plants than growing them. “I have a large yard, but the more I planted, the worse it got. I was killing so many of them I decided to take a horticultural course. I actually discovered this whole new life path because I was fed up with spending so much money on plants!” One course turned into another, and before she knew it, she was passionately devoted to all growing things. So while working fulltime, and raising three children, she began studying horticulture in earnest through the University of Guelph. Eventually Caines opened up her own landscaping business. But the hours were excruciating, so when the job of Parks Turf Technician for the Municipality came up, she applied and got the job. Today she manages all the functions of the Parks department from horticulture (plants), arboriculture (trees) turf, hardscape (fencing, picnic tables) and beautification (litter removal). “The public might also be interested in knowing that although Parks can’t do actual work for you, they are an excellent resource and can offer advice about your own personal plants and trees.” The only negative to being a Parks Manager is that Caines is not out in the field as much as she would like. Although once in a while she tries her hand at planting a tulip or two if no one is looking! “I do miss the sunshine, and the interaction with a very happy team of people. And tulips are particularly special to me because they never used to grow here. But last year we got 5000 to bloom because of our composting process. I am always fascinated with watching something grow. It is special to take a tiny seed or bulb, drop it in the ground, and see something, a plant, fruit or vegetable, come out of nothing.” Although winter is busy for Parks with their snow clearing of municipal sidewalks, parking lots and paved trails, spring is when the team really goes into high gear with all the cleanup and planting. Unfortunately, they also have to

clean up a lot of garbage too. “In the winter, when people drive to the dump, stuff blows out of their trucks and gets buried by the snow. It would help us if everyone would remember to cover their loads of garbage while driving.” Caines says, “We only have 60 guaranteed frost-free days in Fort McMurray so we work fast. We normally have a staff of 71, but in the spring we add 35 students and 15 temps. Over 400 baskets and 200 planters are designed each year and now we are already planning for all the moveable planters that will be used during the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.” But no matter what the time of year, Caines still loves both her work and the city she has lived in since she was 12. “As you crest the hill and see our valley with the Clearwater and the Athabasca rivers, and all those multi-coloured trees, you realize we really do live in a beautiful oasis.” For more information contact Parks at 780-799-5832 contactparks@woodbuffalo.ab.ca

It’s time to get active, McMurray Girls! It’s time to get involved in the community. What’s that? You don’t want to? Why not? Is it because you don’t actually define yourself as a McMurray Girl? ARE YOU HERE ON A TWO, FIVE OR TEN YEAR PLAN AND CAN’T WAIT TO MOVE “HOME”? That seems to be pretty common. I came up on a five year plan myself, but then found myself staying as I discovered how awesome this diverse cultural community is. Of course, that doesn’t happen for everyone. I’m currently involved in an Action Learning Project through Leadership Wood Buffalo (LWB). My team is on a mission to find out what prevents people from making Fort McMurray their home and getting engaged in the community. We’re focusing our research specifically on awesome women, like yourselves, in our community. As we know, women are the heart of the family and are key to a vibrant and vital community. We want to find out why women, just like you, choose to make Fort McMurray home... or why women like you are choosing not to make Fort McMurray home. It is a big deal when the community loses fantastic women and we want to stop that from happening!

To find out what women in the community really think, we launched a ten week online Community Engagement Survey. The survey asked what people love about this town and about what some of the challenges are. We also decided to reach out to strategic community groups to find out what is already happening and what is missing in town. We had some predictions before we started, but the early results surprised us. We’ll be sharing our survey results with key community groups and with McMurray Girl – stay tuned for an update in a later issue!

So what will happen when we’re done? That is up to YOU! Our next step will depend on the feedback we receive. We’ve asked the community to tell us what they want and the end result is going to depend on what we hear. Maybe it will be that there isn’t anything to do for kids. If that’s the case, we need to find better ways to communicate what is available. Maybe we’ll hear that housing or childcare is too expensive. In this case, we may need to partner with a community group to provide them feedback or support to help change this. Perhaps we will need to create an entirely new project or organization! Maybe we’ll hear we need more shopping. (Ok, we’re almost 100 per cent sure we’ll hear this!) And, we can target certain retailers or small business owners to help them get established in Fort McMurray. We are open to the feedback from women (and men) of all ages in the community to find out how we can encourage people to believe that Fort McMurray is growing with lots of opportunities on the horizon and that there are many reasons to stay. This research is being conducted to fulfill the Action Learning component of a program called Leadership Wood Buffalo. The LWB Program has a community-focused design to identify and develop current and future leaders in the Wood Buffalo region. The LWB Program is a hands-on, experiential program designed to explore and develop leadership capacity and skills within the context of actual community issues in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The community becomes the leadership development classroom. I can tell you from experience that this program will help you to become an even more fabulous version of yourself and that you will meet a bunch of amazing people along the way.

WANT TO LEARN MORE? Join us at the LWB Program Information night hosted by FuseSocial on Monday, March 10 at 6:30pm at the Quality Hotel. ONEGIRL | Introducing the McMurray Girls of ONE Team

ONEGIRL

Being a part of ONE Team means being part of a big family that constantly works together for the betterment of our community.

“ Photo © Carrie Williams Photography

ONEGIRL:

selena smith sports events supervisor A McMurray Girl of 5 years, Selena was born and raised in Glenwood PEI. She attended the University of New Brunswick before moving here to begin her career with MacDonald Island Park. With a host of large-scale sporting events set to take place at MacDonald Island Park for 2014/2015, as the facility’s Sport Events Supervisor, Selena sights are currently set on the Grand Slam of Curling, The National. Taking place from March 12-16, the event will bring 18 of the best professional men’s curling teams from around the world to Fort McMurray. The event will be broadcast live across Canada on Sportsnet.

ONE fun fact: As a child I wanted to be a zamboni driver when I grew up. ONE thing I can’t live without: Humour ONE Favourite MacDonald Island Memory: My first big event was the Northern Classic where we hosted the first-ever outdoor junior hockey game in North America. The Trews performed at the game, as well. It was freezing cold and exhausting but definitely an amazing experience that I will never forget. ONE on the job must-have: My clipboard. The only way I stay organized during an event is to have all my documents with me at all times.

Hard work is part of the job, but Selena says she has also met all of her closest friends through her work, which has truly helped make the facility feel like home for her. Outside of work, Selena’s future is filled with bright plans, as well. She is currently planning her wedding for this July, 2014. “My philosophy is that a work/life balance can never stay exactly 50/50. I believe there are times when it is important to make your career a priority but then in time, when you come to a point where you feel satisfaction in your job, the switch will happen again.” Outside of planning sports events, her favourite time spent off-hours at the facility is when she gets to attend events, “whether it be a gala, concert, or hockey provincials, there is always something to do.” And, to anyone new to the facility or looking to discover a great way to get fit while having fun, Selena recommends the climbing wall, “It's like a hidden gem in the facility. If you are looking for a workout and don't like the traditional methods, give climbing a try!” Looking ahead, Selena’s also excited about the 2015 opening of Shell Place as well as the The Northern Kickoff presented by Shell Albian Sands, which will feature the Edmonton Eskimos vs Saskatchewan Rough Riders game, broadcast on TSN. There is certainly a lot on the horizon for our region, and Selena will be among those at the heart of the action. To some, this might be daunting, but to Selena, it’s rewarding. “When I reach the end of an event and get to take a second to look around and see the smiles on the faces of the participants and those attending the event, it makes me remember why I love my job and in that second all the hard work and long days are worth it.” For more information about sports events at MacDonald Island Park, contact Selena at: 780-791-0070 ext 5096 selena.smith@onerec.ca

Follow writer Brenna Fynes as she discovers Fort McMurray, dating, and the path ahead on her journey as a new McMurray Girl

Less than a month ago I found myself on the wrong end of a longdistance relationship. My boyfriend Chris had been gone for three of a six month work contract in Tanzania, and had informed me he wanted to take a break from our relationship for the second half of his stint. The distance was too stressful for him and he wanted to be single to focus on having his “full adventure”. I wish I could say it was a difficult decision, because at 29-years-old I was sure that this one was the one, but if he didn’t want to be in a relationship with me while he was away, then I undeniably knew I did not want a relationship with him when he returned.

by Brenna Fynes

Two short weeks later I sat silently panicking at the back of a Greyhound bus. My friend Tara who had her own reasons for wanting to get away was passed out and snoring next to me, the rucksack that was ironically a hand-me-down from my boyfriend was stored below me, and I had no idea what would lay in front of me. It is funny how upon reflection we can sometimes find elements of foreshadowing in our lives. An off-handed comment I made one lazy night back in the summer had been rolling around in my brain for months like a grain of sand becoming a pearl. After one of many otherwise routine al fresco dinners just before Chris would find out about his trip to Tanzania, I mentioned to him that I would like to live in Fort McMurray one day. I wanted to see if it was really how I and everyone imagined it, I explained, and hey, the rumours of unbelievable money-making weren’t exactly a deterrent. His glib response along the lines of not wanting to live in Alberta, although fairly typical for Vancouverites, was not the worst I heard in the two weeks between deciding my relationship was over and deciding to buy a one way ticket away from the coast. The warnings from my friends and family about drugs, violence, and misogyny were racing through my head as I stared straight ahead at the winding road. Were they right, I wondered. Had I not thought this through all the way? Was it even safe for two young women to travel alone into the north? Had I made a terrible mistake running away from my relationship? Was I going to end up alone, penniless and freezing to death under an overpass? As the bus ascended into the mountains and the darkness outside grew into blackness, I must have worried myself unconscious because when I awoke it was the next day and we were in big sky country. The imprisoning mountains of southern British Columbia had been replaced with the bright and open horizon of central Alberta and my self-doubt and worry had been replaced with excitement and glee. I couldn’t wait to unpack my frozen bags and let my new life begin. A full and single adventure, eh? Don’t threaten me with a good time!

goodreads Spring is here! Well… kind of. But it’s definitely time to start thinking about putting away the heavy coat, finding the sandals again, and getting back outside! Whether you’re looking to get some time in the sunshine, start back to work on that beach body, or spend some time enjoying time with friends and family during holidays, your Library is here to help! Here are some of our favorite reads for spring:

Fort McMurray Public Library on MacDonald Island “Reading is to the

mind

what exercise is to the body.” -Sir Richard Steele

The Wild Weather Book: Loads of things to do outdoors in rain, wind and snow

– Fiona Danks “I’m BORED!!!” When the weather is rainy with a Spring shower or still chilly, maybe even still snowing… Let’s go out and play! Many families struggle with getting kids away from the screen and out of the house – here’s a book of fun ideas to get kids out and about, even on Wild Weather Days! With creative ideas and projects, kids are encouraged to go have fun, no matter what the weather – and hey, when was the last time you jumped in a puddle on purpose? Why not join them?

The Edible Balcony: Growing Fresh Produce in Small Spaces

– Alex Mitchell Spring is the time to get that garden started! But when you live in an apartment, townhome or other, smaller space, how is that possible? Alex Mitchell’s book on urban gardening is a great resource for those of us who want our fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables without risking what might (or might not) make it to the store! Your own herb garden with parsley, oregano, thyme and – especially – basil? Fantastic!

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works

– Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch We’ve all heard it: Diets don’t work. You have to change your habits. But no one ever tells how, exactly, we’re supposed to do that when every time we think we’ve created a new habit, we realize that the old ones are right there, waiting to creep in again. And who among us hasn’t been on a diet long enough to feel like we would mug our own Momma for a Chee-to? Intuitive eating is about ending that cycle – it’s a compassionate, thoughtful program that teaches you to listen to your body and find a healthy relationship with food, no matter what your natural weight.

Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights?: Fitness Myths, Training Truths, and Other Surprising Discoveries from the Science of Exercise

– Alex Hutchinson In an industry where everything is a fad, every workout is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST EVER and lots of people don’t know what they’re talking about, this book is a real breath of fresh air. Think of it as MythBusters for the gym. Every question you have is here, with an accessible and detailed answer. A real must for your new exercise routine!

What every smart mcmurray girl should know about the law

employment contract By Gwen May

For some, the change in season may also mean a change in employment. It is usual for employees to simply sign the contract they are given: after all they want the job. But it is possible to negotiate suitable terms or at the very least ask questions about the contract. Here are some key things to consider when presented with a contract.

Basic Rights as an Employee In Alberta, there is a piece of legislation, the Employment Standards Code, which sets out minimum standards with which employers must comply. These include the following: Minimum wage: This varies for some jobs, but for most it is $9.95 per hour. Overtime: An employee must be paid time and a half for hours worked over 8 hours per day or 44 per week. Continuation of employment: An employee’s employment is deemed to be continuous if there is a change in ownership of the company: a new employer does not mean a new job. Notice of termination: The amount of notice (or pay in-lieu of notice) that an employer must give an employee who is laid off or terminated for no reason depends on how long the employee has worked for the employer, with the least amount of notice being one week (when the employee has been employed more than 3 months but less than 2 years). Notice of resignation: The amount of notice required from the employee depends on the length of employment but is at most 2 weeks (for employment of 2 years or more), and there are several exceptions to this requirement.

Know your resources To learn more about the Code and Alberta Employment Standards, the body in charge of implementing the Code, see http://humanservices.alberta.ca/working-in-alberta/1224.html.

Termination Clauses As discussed above, the employer is bound by a minimum notice for termination. However, an employee is often entitled to more notice or pay-in-lieu of notice. Some employers, but not all, try to address this in the contract by stipulating the notice or pay-in-lieu that the employer will receive, regardless of the length of the employee’s employment or other factors.

The contract may also include a period of notice required from the employee if the employee resigns. This could end up being quite restrictive to the employee and should be given attention sooner rather than later. Upon termination of employment, Alberta Employment Standards can assist in remedying a violation of the Code. However, the employee may be entitled to compensation outside of the Code, and it is recommended they see a lawyer. Although it is rarely done, it is also possible to consult a lawyer prior to signing a contract which could avoid unfair conditions on termination or at any other time.

Restrictive Covenants / Non-compete Clauses The employment contract may include a restrictive covenant, also known as a non-compete clause: a clause that restricts the employee from carrying on a competing business once the employee no longer works for the employer. If the clause is too general it will be found to be void because it restricts trade, which is contrary to public policy. Employers will try to get around this by including specific details, such as the geographic area that employee is restricted from carrying on business in, and the length of the restriction. The value of a restrictive covenant to the employer is obvious. It is equally obvious that such a clause could put the employee at risk of not earning a livelihood if the job ends. Any clause like this should be considered carefully before agreeing to it.

Gwen May Gwen is a lawyer at Flett Manning Moore. Her practice is primarily in family law, but she also provides assistance in the areas of immigration and employment law. Gwen enjoys singing, reading and playing trivia and may try to organize you into doing one or all of these things if you let her.

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s Second

Women of Inspiration Series presented by Syncrude Since the beginning of time women have been making huge

contributions within their families, their workplaces, their communities and the world. Locally, there has been a real need to recognize Wood Buffalo’s hard working, critical thinking, intelligent and inspirational women. Women who challenge gender roles in the workplace and at home, women who break boundaries for the greater good in their communities, and women who do what it takes to help the causes they’re passionate about. These are the type of women that are recognized and celebrated through the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta Women of Inspiration Series, presented by Syncrude.

Here is the latest trio of nominees who

Julie Dolmont Julie Dolmont has been an advisor for the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Youth (MACOY) since 2008. However, Julie is much more than just an advisor for the youth of MACOY; she is their mentor and role model. Julie is committed to making positive changes in the lives of youth by empowering them to get actively engaged in the Fort McMurray community. She not only supports them in having their voice heard in the decisions that affect them, but she also encourages them to be champions in the community. Her dedication to youth and her passion for this community extend far beyond office hours, and Julie has inspired many younger girls with her passionate spirit. Julie truly goes far beyond the call of duty and is always focusing on helping others. Julie has always brought a positive impact to other women and girls around her by guiding them through their problems, encouraging others, and having an incredible amount of patience. Mentoring young teens in the community is an important role, and Julie takes the initiative to build friendly relationships with the people among her. Rather than leading from the front, Julie is described as the type of leader who stands behind youth, encouraging and supporting them to have faith in their own voices and actions.

The overall goal of Women of Inspiration is to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers, and help create positive change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here in our communities.

Louise Cooke Louise Cooke came to Fort McMurray in 1977 with a one year plan, and has remained here ever since. For over 7 years she worked as a social worker for Alberta Social Services, where she would spend time each month in Fort Chipewyan, and it was her passion and enthusiasm for the well-being of Aboriginal communities that led her to support the Youth Justice Committee in Fort Chipewyan in the early nineties. A few years ago Louise started volunteering for the Nanny Network program at the Hub where she guided, supported and encouraged these hard working women to become active, healthy

have been nominated by their peers:

Jo-Anne Packham Jo-Anne Packham, the Executive Director of Mark Amy Treatment Centre, is someone who leads by example and believes that no matter what life throws at you; you take it, learn from it and become a stronger person because of it. She is someone that puts her own needs aside for the betterment of the community, and has never expected anything back. Jo-Anne has not been afraid to step up and take a leadership role to help the community grow. Not only does she continuously strive to make it a positive atmosphere for the clients, but she also aspired to develop the centre and was able to successfully expand the program to help house many clients who had lost hope. A strong Metis woman herself, Jo-Anne has always had a passion for the Aboriginal community. She started working at a young age with Aboriginal youth in Manitoba, and after many years of working with youth she expanded her skills and started working for National Native American Drug and Alcohol Program (NNADAP) in the Wood Buffalo region as an outpatient worker providing aboriginal clients a means to get treatment. Jo-Anne is a great role model for women and girls, and inspires them to be strong, smart and bold. She has a strong personality and shows women that it is okay to be themselves and that they do not have to fit into a mold created by others.

and happy members of our community. Talking to them and sharing life stories made her realize that there is a huge need for free legal information for all immigrants and refugees in this community, and so she took action and initiated a partnership between Legal Aid Alberta, YMCA and most recently, Edmonton Community Legal Centre to organize an Immigration Seminar in Fort McMurray. Louise is presently retiring after 24 years of work as Regional Administrator with Legal Aid Alberta. In this role, she was a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and access to justice. People who know Louise admire her dedication and hard work as well as her modesty. Her actions and accomplishments are an inspiration to others within the community.

WHAT/ WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION THROUGH LIFE? Family is everything to me. My greatest inspirations are my children. My children are my life! I’m a proud mother of a 19 year old son, Brandon and a 14 year old daughter, Amber. Every day when I wake up and see them waking up and getting ready for a bright new day, I know my life is complete. They have been my strength and support and so completely understanding and reassuring. I couldn’t ask for anything more than the health and happiness of my children. I’m also honored to announce our first grandchild will be arriving in February 2014. The journey of life continues, as we await the arrival of our first grandson. Hold your children and love them for they are our inspiration and our future generations that we are molding. I also cherish my parents and siblings for their support in every way. HOW IS SUCCESS DISPLAYED IN YOUR LIFE? For me, success is achieving your goals and aspirations, as simple or complex as they may be! Just living life and being complete and happy. Success is measured by family and friends and all things positive that you surround yourself with. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH? My career found me! We started in 2005 with our only intention being to supply labour crews in the oilfield. We were not sure where it would take us until it developed and grew and over the years, became what it is today. We now provide site wide maintenance services for the oil industry in Northern Alberta from Heavy Equipment, Trades People, Manpower and Welding Services. It has been a challenging but rewarding and exciting career. Every day brings new challenges, opportunities and adventures. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? I give back to the community by being a role model to women and by empowering them to be all that they can be. We should never measure ourselves by monetary success but by simply achieving our goals as simple or complex as they may be. I also support local hockey events. I sponsor children from our community so they are able to play on Fort McMurray hockey teams and participate in youth programs. I also support the New Mothers program located in Janvier, Alberta where a licensed midwife puts on programs to educate new and young mothers, sharing their experiences, answering questions and giving guidance on caring for their baby and breastfeeding techniques. I also support NAABA, (Northeastern Alberta Aboriginal Business Association). But, my absolute favorite is being a part of the Aboriginal Women in Business organization.

CEO, Dene Sky Enterprises

WHAT/ WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION THROUGH LIFE? My Family constantly inspires me. My parents passionately lead by example, which guided my siblings and I to achieve all of our goals, including educational ones. Their calm demeanor and thoughtful advice has helped shape me into the woman I am today, and for that I am thankful. My siblings have also inspired me with their accomplishments - their support and encouragement throughout my life so far has been invaluable. HOW IS SUCCESS DISPLAYED IN YOUR LIFE? Starting elementary in Fort Chipewyan to graduating high school in Fort McMurray was a journey; and my success did not stop there. From there I received a diploma from NAIT in Renewable Resources, a degree in Natural Resources from Thompson River University, and am very close to obtaining my MSc in Environment and Management from Royal Roads University. At Syncrude I started as a general summer student, setting my career goal to make a difference by improving the reclamation practices of the oilsands industry, and I have recently been promoted to the Reclamation & Closure Research Site Team Lead after 9 years in the environmental research sector. I am pleased to contribute to solutions that address environmental concerns within the region, as well as be a role model for the youth in my home community of Fort Chipewyan. By sharing my story, I hope to help others overcome their fears of pursuing their career aspirations. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH? My love for the environment began with growing up in Fort Chipewyan. Being surrounded by people that shared this love pushed me to pursue my career, knowing the importance of our land and what it provides to help sustain my traditional way of life. My fondest memories are spending time at my Dad's cabin on his trap line. The fresh air and beauty of the surroundings there helped me recognize that our environment holds great value, and my career reflects this. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? I support community events as often as I can; both in Fort McMurray and the regional municipality. Volunteering in my home community of Fort Chipewyan is always on the top of my list. I have helped with Treaty Day events, local food drives and support United Way initiatives. At work I sit on the Aboriginal Employee Network; in 2013 we successfully launched our first Annual Aboriginal Awareness Day. The diverse community of Fort McMurray brings people from all over the world, and it's important to showcase and educate our new community members on the the local aboriginal heritage unique to this city. I am proud to be a lifelong member of this community, and will continue to always call it home.
