It's my absolute favourite time to be a McMurray Girl - Summer! The days are gloriously long and full of plenty of opportunity to get outside, enjoy and frolic! This includes our pet friends ... and it's clear that they feel the same way. (Hey, we all love a good barbecue!)

For those of you who know me, you probably know Koko and Moka - my toy poodles who are really more like our second and third children! One has completely taken on my husband Kyle's personality, and the other, mine! YES, they are pampered and YES they are spoiled. But the truth is, they give back just as much as they get... maybe even more. We can learn a lot from our pets. They teach us to stop and smell the roses in life. (Or grass... or lamp-posts...) But, no matter how busy or full our lives get, our pets are always there, ready for you to take time out to accept a simple kiss or cuddle-sesh. And, that's what it's really all about! It's important to connect to as many moments of pure joy each day as we can. Our pets are also all about play! With the squeak of a toy, they abandon anything else they may be doing. When playtime is a possibility, nothing is more important and they devote 100% of their being... whether it's running with reckless abandon or a great game of tug-o-war... they are completely in the moment with you. What better time than Summer to embrace this spirit for the pursuit of fun and playfulness? I propose we all take a lesson from these wise yet furry beings. Seize Summer... and seize each small opportunity that the day brings to channel a little bit of joy into your experience!

hydration station. On average, we lose about 90 ounces of water daily - even more on especially hot or active days. Not everyone loves to drink water, but staying hydrated during the summer is essential. And, since only water truly hydrates the body, we suggest these tips to make water drinking a no-brainer! • Fill up and drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake up each morning.

• Throughout the day, never put down an empty glass continually refill with water.
• Bring a few water bottles and a bowl for pit stops as keeping your pet hydrated is crucial.
• Make note to take a water break any time you happen to pass a water cooler.
• Before booking a hotel, ask if they accept pets and what the pet fee per night is.
• Create a hydration station with pre-cut lemons, limes and/or mint to muddle into a refreshing guilt-free mojitostyle drink.
• Bring toys to keep them occupied.
• Let your pet out every pit stop, even if they don’t need a pee break. • Bring 2 leashes and collars, in case you lose one. ...more with Kimberly and her dog, Rolo: P.49

Tired of being cramped inside all winter?
McMurray Girls, it's time to come out of hibernation and hit the trails walking, running, or biking and enjoy the best our city has to offer! Fort McMurray’s Birchwood Trails offer plenty of wide open spaces and places to explore. The way I experience them is with a great group of running gals and I’m here to convince you that you can do it too!

I’m probably not the only woman who has never thought of herself as a “runner.” In fact, to this day, I still struggle with feeling like an imposter, and telling myself I’m not a “real runner.” Do you ever feel like you can’t breathe when you run, or like your heart is going to pop out of your chest? So many people tell me running just isn’t enjoyable. I’m going to challenge you and say that if you can’t breathe and feel like you’re going to die (or is that just me?!), you’re running too fast and too hard, too soon. I’m telling you to take it easier on yourself, and get ready to actually enjoy the journey, without needing a bed (or paramedics to revive you) at the end of your run. Not sure how to get started? The great thing about running is it takes almost no equipment and you will feel yourself improve amazingly fast! Here are some tips to help you start running and enjoying the time you are spending on your run: START SHORT: Everyone has to start somewhere – even marathon runners can’t just wake up and run 42 kms without training. Start with short distances like 1, 2 and 3 kilometers and slowly build up to longer distances.
FIND A FRIEND: For me, running is as much (ok, mostly) about the social aspect. Get a few friends out or join a running group so you can support each other through every run. You won’t believe how much more entertaining running is with a great group of guys and gals to enjoy the scenery and catch up on daily activities with. SET A GOAL: We all need a little something to motivate us on those mornings when staying in bed is so tempting. Maybe you want to “run 100 kilometers this summer” or “run 5 kilometers in 40 minutes” (or even 30!) For me, a big motivator is actually signing up for a race. A perfect first race is the 5 kilometer CIBC Run for the Cure, happening this October 6th, 2013 in Fort McMurray and you can already sign up online. After that, consider a 10km, half marathon or even a full marathon! Having something to train for also gives you a great way to celebrate all the progress you’re making. HAVE FUN: Stop to enjoy the view, take silly pictures along the way, and eat gummy bears to refuel. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in speed or achieving personal bests. And it is great to improve and have goals (see above). But don’t forget that to keep running, you have to enjoy it so having fun needs to be the most important thing! Before you start running (or any new exercise), you should always check with a doctor. And believe me – I know it was a long, cold winter that involved the indoors, a lot of Real Housewives of wherever and delicious Bailey’s/coffee combos to survive. Getting off the couch is hard. But there is no better time than today, and especially summers in Fort McMurray to take advantage of the fresh air, beautiful sights and long nights. If you see anyone (or our running group) out on the trails this summer, throw up a wave and enjoy the sunshine on your face and the incredible feeling of getting healthy and active in the Birchwood Trails.
by Lisa Radetic
START SLOW: You will love interval training because it means you can take walking breaks (*insert sigh of relief here*). Intervals mean you run for a certain period of time, and then walk to rest in-between runs. 30 seconds will never have felt so long when you first start running and your 2 minute walks will fly by, but soon, you will be running for 2, 5, and even 10 minutes straight as your body adapts.
GET DIGITALLY DELIGHTED: An easy way to start running is by downloading an app like “Couch to 5km.” You can also find many training programs on the internet to help you build up and train at the right pace. For some people, having the right music is important – download the Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna to rock out to on the road.

is a delicious collection of creations by two seasoned Chefs – Marco & Billy. Each Chef is known for his perfected culinary style. This provides for the perfect blend of ying and yang in the Prime kitchen! Marco and Billy share their mastered grilling tips for those of you with meat on the menu this summer!
Q:
What is the biggest mistake that a barbecuer can make? Chef Billy: Most people do not let the BBQ preheat enough! You have to preheat your BBQ to the proper grilling temperature otherwise, you will be pulling and ripping your food off the grill.
Q:
What are your three tips for grilling meat to perfection? Ingredients: 1/4 cup minced onions 2 T olive oil 2 T water 3 crushed garlic cloves 1 T apple cider vinegar 1 T tomato paste 1 1/2 T liquid smoke 1 T dry mustard 1/2 T cayenne 2 cups of ketchup 1/2 a cup brown sugar fresh ground pepper and worchestershire sauce to taste Blend onion and water into a puree. Heat to med fire. Add olive oil, simmer until lightly brown then add all other ingredients until blended.
summer
BBQ basics
Chef Billy: 1. Before you put your steak on the grill, bring it to room temperature first by allowing it to sit on the counter or out of the cooler. 2. Don't play with your steak while grilling! You should only have to flip a steak once. 3. This to me, is the most important step: allow your steak to rest once it has been pulled off the grill.
Q:
What should we keep in mind when selecting a steak? Chef Billy: First, go to a butcher. Do not buy it vacuum packed or wrapped in some sort of packaging at the grocery store. You want a butcher who loves his meat just as much as you do! Next, pay close attention to the marbling in your steak (marbling is the distribution of collagen or fat in your beef), the more the better. Last, your steak should be a vibrant red in colour (not purple) and firm to the touch.
Q:
What is a unique idea that home barbecuers should try? Chef Marco: Try a baked alaska on the grill. Chef Billy: Convert your home BBQ into a home smoker. That changes everything! It is so simple, too. All you really need is to create a pouch with wet and dry wood chips in it (could be apple, hickory or cherry wood). Put it on one side of the grill (with the heat on) and your meat on the other side (with the heat off) ...and smoke away!

message from Mayor Melissa Blake Isn’t it great to be enjoying these long, warm summer days? For a few weeks it felt like Old Man Winter just wasn’t going to go on vacation this year, but eventually spring sent him packing and promptly handed the keys of the season over to summer! While each season in Wood Buffalo has its own set of memorable characteristics, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the beautiful days of summer. Not only is there more daylight for being out and about with family and friends, but many of our community organizations host events at this time. That means there’s an abundance of fantastic activities to participate in. Events Wood Buffalo will be busy presenting Canada Rocks, InterPLAY and one of my favourite summer events, the Canada Day Parade. I love looking out into the crowds who have gathered for the parade and seeing how multi-cultural our community is. The world is arriving in Wood Buffalo and weaving a beautiful mosaic of vibrancy and diversity in this region. Beginning with our First Nations and Métis heritage, we have a rich cultural history and it’s wonderful to celebrate this July 1st! Summer also provides a great time to share the outdoors with your pet. Whether you’re into visiting the off-leash dog park by St. Gabriel’s School in Thickwood or lounging in the backyard with your cat on a warm summer’s evening, I hope the summer of 2013 brings many fond memories with your favourite feline, premier pooch, and any other type of pet that you hold dear to your heart… pet rocks included, of course! Enjoy celebrating our pets with this edition of McMurray Girl and I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable summer!
Sincerely, Melissa Blake, Mayor

Also located on the Birchwood Trail System is the Outdoor Green Gym; it features 14 stations with over 50 pieces of equipment built to last outdoors. Birthday Party!
It’s time to celebrate! The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is taking the dreaded birthday party planning off of your to-do list! Say goodbye to blowing up dozens of balloons, baking the perfect cake and creating a guest list - the RMWB Recreation and Culture Department are planning the ultimate birthday party experience; and everyone’s invited! All members of the community, young and old, are invited to attend the RMWB’s Everybody’s Birthday Party event at no cost! The party is scheduled to take place this summer on July 20th, location and time to be determined. “This is the fourth Everybody’s Birthday Party event since Recreation Programmer Summer Students dreamt up the concept in 2010,” Says Echo Schmidek, Recreation Coordinator for the Community Services Department of the RMWB. “I’ve watched this event grow over the years, bringing members of the community together. Everyone has the opportunity to celebrate not only their own birthday, but their friends’ and family members’ birthdays too!” Last summer, 600 guests attended Everybody’s Birthday Party held at Borealis Park. The 2012 event featured a carnival theme with tons of activities for all ages! Staff are tight-lipped in regards to details, but the theme for this year’s fourth annual Everybody’s Birthday Party has been released; Under the Sea! “I think it’s safe to expect this event to continue to grow, as it’s been well-received in the past by the community, as well as suitable for all types of age groups and cultures,” says Schmidek.

Be fit
for life. By Christina Baker (Dauphinee)
You don’t have to do it alone! There are many health benefits to having a furry friend along for the journey. Not only do they improve our social and emotional well-being, but they can also help increase our level physical fitness. Common misconceptions of getting a “good” workout are that you have to train hard enough to become exhausted and sweaty. Yes, vigorous workouts are important – but you can get all the same health benefits from the simple act of walking. Having a pet that needs exercise increases our motivation to get ourselves moving – after all, they are depending on us. Walking is one of the best forms of physical activity because it is low impact, weight-bearing, (to improve bone density) and can burn upwards of 300 calories an hour – meaning it can also assist with weight loss, as well as reduce stress and improve health. Studies have found that regular walking can cut the risk of developing type two diabetes in half.

summer 2013 | mcmurraygirl.com
The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for adults recommends 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activities per week. This can be done in bouts of 10 minutes or more. This means if you walk your furry friend for 20-30 minutes each day at a brisk pace (think walking in a hurry) you will be meeting the Canadian Guidelines for physical activity. And this is no small feat! Currently, only about 5 per cent Canadian adults are meeting these guidelines. On average, a 30 minute brisk walk will burn approximately 130 calories. To put this in perspective, this means that in 30 minutes you could burn off the same amount of calories you would consume if you chose to stay home and consume a glass of wine. However, before you hit the pavement – it is always important to keep safety in mind when exercising outside - both for you and your pet. Proper equipment (good walking shoes and appropriate clothing) as well as keeping yourself and your pet hydrated will ensure you both get the maximum benefits from walking.

Be Fit for Life Centres are located in nine colleges and universities across Alberta. We provide community and workplace programming for active living. At school, work, and home or in your community we will assist you in developing a program or finding an activity that fits your needs. Our vision is for Albertans to live active, healthy lifestyles.
When the temperature starts to rise outside it is essential to drink lots of fluids to regulate the temperature inside our bodies. Water keeps us cool and can also help to prevent the symptoms of dehydration, which can be dangerous and even fatal. This is also true for animals because they cannot cool themselves off by sweating like humans – thus making water extremely important. Did you know that thirst is not an effective warning sign for needing to hydrate? By the time you feel the desire for a drink you have already begun the path to dehydration, so it is vital to drink, and drink often, before you allow yourself to feel “thirsty.” What about sports drinks? These are marketed as drinks that replace energy, minerals and fluids loss during exercise. They have a specific combination of water, carbohydrates, electrolytes and flavouring that help your muscles recover and sustain exercise. That being said, they are 90-96 per cent water. In most cases, plain water along with proper nutrition will quench your thirst and keep your muscles moving, saving you the extra calories found in sport drinks. Sport drinks are only recommended when you are performing at least 60 minutes of intense activity or exercising in extreme heat. If you don’t have that little pal to motivate you, try taking the 10,000 step challenge! One of the programs the Keyano College Be Fit For Life Centre runs is called Be Fit Keyano, which is a wellness initiative that gets students and staff focusing on their health and wellness. Over the summer, we are doing a Walk to Wellness challenge. We are challenging our students and staff to get 10,000 steps in 5 out of 7 days of the week. If you want to see a similar challenge coordinated in your workplace – let us know – we are here to help!

DANCE BEGINNINGS I've had tap shoes on my feet since I was two! GREATEST MOMENT: Dancing my whole life has given me so many opportunities and amazing memories, but it would have to be auditioning and getting into my dream school in New York, and living and dancing there. The starving artist's dream and loving every minute of it!
EXCITED ABOUT: The Festival Team, Christmas Show, community events, upcoming examinations and preparation for the 2014 show!

LOVING FORT MCMURRAY: The growth, energy and possibilities are limitless. If you can dream it, it can happen here.
A look inside a dance teacher’s class is like a look inside a dance teacher’s heart.
mi Dance Academy Whether your little one is 30 months old - or it's YOU who is interested in putting on a pair of dance shoes, the Mi Dance Academy has a range of classes for dancers of all ages! The Mi Dance Academy is comprised of three fully certified dance instruction professionals who share a love for teaching and a passion for dance. You may recognize Katie Eustace, who joined the Mi Team after formerly owning Fort McMurray's 'Elevation Dance'. After being approached by Mac Island about bringing dance to the facility, she taught alone for a year - but the community's desire for an expanded dance program was clear. In September of 2012, the program was rebranded and re-launched with the arrival of two new world-class dance instructors: Dara-Jane Lake, Dance Supervisor along with Kelli Stewart who spent time studying dance in New York. All three teachers are accredited by international dance examination bodies, making up a dream team who are able to offer a wide variety of classes such as: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Salsa Babies and Salsa Tots.
Katie Eustace FULL TIME, FULLY QUALIFIED AND CERTIFIED DANCE INSTRUCTOR DANCE BACKGROUND: I started dancing when I was 2, started assisting at 13, and was given my first class to teach by myself at 15. BEST MOMENT: When my student finally gets that one move they have been working so hard on! FAVE ROUTINE THIS YEAR: "Newsies" performed by my jazz 3 students! I saw the musical on Broadway and was so excited to create my own version and share the story with my students!
dance facts What fees can parents expect for dance classes? Our fee structure is based on time. Fees start at $42.50 per month for a 30 minute class, which includes the year-end recital costume.
What is the age range for students? 30 months (by September 14, 2013) to adult.

For adults with the itch to get movin', six-week Adult Hip Hop dance sessions are offered, with the strong possibility of adding Adult Tap classes to their offerings, as well. The regular dance season runs for 40 weeks from September to early June. Students are taught the essentials of dance in a warm, friendly classroom setting. Children over the age of seven can be prepared for examinations with the Society of Russian Ballet, Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. The year culminates in an on-stage performance. Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to participate in workshops and travel to other cities to attend conventions. September 2013 will see the addition of a Festival Team that will perform in our community at various events and will travel to competitions in nearby cities. The future of dance in Wood Buffalo is exciting, and at the Mi Dance Academy, there are no limits to where your tap, jazz or ballet shoes can take you!

by Jove, is my love
luck changing? By Georgia Nicols
Photo © Shutterstock.com / Poznyakov / ringo ringo
Jupiter (also called Jove) is the planet of good fortune, expansion, wisdom and joy. It is now changing signs, which means we all have different luck in love, money and success. Read on to see how your “Love Luck” is changing!
43
Aries Because your world is expanding on the home front, this is where you might encounter new love. A friend of the family? And for some – a rekindled marriage! New love for you will probably come with property (mortgage free, one hopes). Someone with a condo, a house or dare we say acreage? (We did.) Definitely attend family weddings and reunions.
Virgo Your increased popularity will probably put you in contact with someone in a class, a club or a professional association. You might also be introduced to your new love through a friend because it appears that new romance comes to you "in a crowd." Groups that are charity based will be another source. (Volunteer to get signatures for a petition.)
Gemini Dear Gemini, you’re laughing all the way to the bank because romance this summer will benefit you financially. Your new love might buy you gifts or introduce you to a richer lifestyle. (Obviously, your main squeeze might be loaded.) Alternatively, you might meet new love where you work or where you spend money on something luxurious. Ka-ching!
Libra You will attract people who admire your professional success. The word career is based on the old French word carriere, which means highway, so professional success is not necessarily about earning money – it's your path in life. Perhaps you are a successful parent. Whatever it is that you do well – this is the arena where your new love awaits.
Cancer Your year ahead is especially fortunate. Your increased self-confidence and poise will attract many people to you. Take your pick. Quite likely, this person might come from a different background or another country because somehow, they will expand your world perhaps even through travel. This person will also make you laugh.
Scorpio In the coming year, you will encounter romance through travel, higher education or exploring opportunities in medicine, the law, publishing and the media. Likely, this new person will come from another culture, a different background or a foreign country. You might even travel together. One thing is certain – new love will expand your world!
Leo Many of you are flamboyant and few realize how serious you are. This year you will attract philosophical people who share your interest in spiritual matters or mysticism. This is perfect because you are exploring your inner world at a deeper level. Meditation retreats, yoga classes and self-help lectures could introduce you to someone special.
Sagittarius Your big clue about new love will be that this person benefits you. They will give you gifts or money, or introduce you to new opportunities, or let you use something they own. That's because the wealth and resources of your romantic partner will bring you good fortune. They might also be totally sexually irresistible. (What a combo!)
Photo © Shutterstock.com / Eduard Stelmakh
Taurus New love might come into your life through an introduction from a sibling, neighbour or everyday contact. Establish a regular routine so you create a trap line (ha!) that overlaps with someone else's. You might meet someone in a bookstore or at a magazine rack because “conversation” and shared communications are the key. You could make a cozy Internet connection.
Capricorn You have the best chance to meet a new partner and get married, that you’ve had in over a decade. Those already in partnerships will feel their relationship is revitalized in a joyful way, because you feel enriched by your partner – perhaps literally. (Yeah, diamonds and cash.) Remember: For a relationship to be successful you must be as good for your partner as he or she is for you. Aquarius Your job scene is where your good luck shines! You might meet romance at work or connected with your work. You might also meet someone doing something to promote your good health. (These two areas are linked in astrology.) Dress your best when going to the doctor. Who knows who will be in the waiting room? Ta da!
Pisces You are finally giving yourself permission to kick up your heels and have fun, including vacations. Expect dazzling romance, love affairs and exciting, social escapades. Buy sexy clothes, especially shoes. (When you're in the right shoes, you feel hot.) Meet new faces at resorts, hotels, theatres, sports events and in any way related to your kids.
Georgia Nicols's wisdom and wit have made her a popular international astrologer whose horoscopes & columns appear in many publications, nationally and internationally – from Elle Canada to the China Daily (Beijing). She makes regular TV appearances and radio appearances and has a popular website with more than a million annual readers. She is a monthly guest on Global TV, appearing the last Sunday of every month. Why did this one-time movie and theatre critic choose this field? "To help people get a better handle on their lives - plus I find astrology absolutely fascinating!"

What makes Rolo special? There are many things that I think make Rolo special and I don't just say that because I'm his owner. He is a licensed pet therapy dog, where he can visit patients in hospitals, students in schools and residents of the Rotary House. I’m very proud of him for completing the whole process and look forward to visiting all those places a lot more. Another thing that makes Rolo special is that he has Epilepsy. Before we got him, I didn’t know animals could have it. But, after many days of research, I learned so much. I am now a member of a group that tries to help other rescue owners cope with all the challenges and difficulties for caring for a pet with epilepsy. I made him the poster boy for my rescue pet blog. I love telling his story; he came from rags to riches you could say; being a stray to becoming a recognized dog in the community. I’m also known not just as Kim, but as Rolo's “Mom”; that's pretty cool.

McMurray Girl Kimberly Nelson is a proud 'rescue mom'. She lives by the saying "Life's too short to be anything but busy." This is evident through her advocation of pet adoption, support of the Fort McMurray SPCA, and volunteer work with Rolo as a Licensed Pet Therapy Dog at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. She shares a unique bond with Rolo and calls his journey since his adoption a 'Rags to Riches' story.

How did you become involved with the Fort McMurray SPCA? I'm proud to say that I was recently appointed as a board member for the FMSPCA, but I have always been a big supporter of pet adoption. You could find me attending events, visiting the shelter, walking dogs and dropping off donated bottles at the shelter. My involvement with the FMSPCA got kicked into overdrive when we adopted Rolo. I started volunteering at events, this was followed by donation and prize recruitment from local individuals and businesses for FMSPCA fundraisers. Last year, I did something I’ve never done before... I took part in the Miss Wood Buffalo Pageant, which allowed me to become an ambassador for the FMSPCA. I won the title of “Miss Big Spirit” and only lost my category by half a point! Through the pageant, I was also able to raise $3500 for the FMSPCA.
Tell us about Rolo's work at the hospital... how did you get involved? We saw a post on the FMSPCA page about the PAWS (pets and wellness society) program. I contacted 4paws Training and took the CGN test (Canadian good neighbour test). We passed! Next up was the weekend-long Pet Therapy Course, followed by a Situation Test where we had to act as if we were at the hospital, being marked on how we responded to different scenarios. We passed, again! Next up, were 3 practicum visits held at the hospital and rotary house. A member of the PAWS Team went with us and watched how we interacted with everyone. We passed, becoming an official PAWS team!

What are your favourite resources for pet owners here in Fort McMurray?
Photo © Shutterstock.com / Maksim Kabakou
I have a few that I adore. For food, treats and accessories we visit Bone & Biscuit. Kathy, the owner, is amazing and so are the members of her staff. For veterinary needs, we go to Dr. Clinch at the Wood Buffalo Small Animal Hospital. The Doctors and staff always take the time to explain what’s going on with your pet and ensure that you understand. For local events, I always go to the FMSPCA website or Facebook Page.
Kim's blog
What are three 'must-haves' as a pet owner? 1) TIME – is the most important thing you can give your animal. If you don’t have time for one, don’t get one. 2) PATIENCE – is needed, especially with a puppy or a new animal. It takes time, effort and a routine to get an animal comfortable in its new environment. 3) KNOWLEDGE – is crucial before getting a pet. Do research as to how much they really cost. You would be surprised with how many people are surprised with animal upkeep; vaccinations, food, treats, and boarding if you go out of town, etc.
What fuels your passion for helping animals?: Ever since my first dog, Sparky (who was also a rescue dog), I have come to know the joy, laughter and love that a pet can bring. My love for animals is a big reason why I started my blog. The FMSPCA adoption of Rolo has motivated me to share my experiences. I can’t always help the FMSPCA out with money, but I know that in this day and age, social media and internet marketing can allow me to reach out to many with the same interests as I have. So the Confessions of a Rescue Mom blog was born!

As an avid pet lover and furbaby supporter, it really gets my hackles up when I hear people say things like 'Animals are in shelters because they didn’t make good pets!' and, 'Animals from shelters are dangerous or they have something wrong with them’. These are pawsitively not true! People seem to hold pets to a higher standard than they do with people. Do they like other dogs? Are they fully trained? Are they hypo-allergenic? I am not sure about you, but I have not been a fan of every person that I have ever met! Furthermore some people I have come across make huge messes and shed their hair everywhere! My family and I have had shelter pets for over 20 years and have deeply valued that time with our adopted family members. Everyone I have spoken with since I have been a pet owner, who has had both a pet from a shelter and from either a pet store or a breeder, made the remark that the pet from the shelter turned out to be the best pet they have ever had! Additionally many shelter pets receive training and socialization before adoption to help make the transition into their new family easier. SPCA and Humane Societies put a great amount of effort into learning as much as they can about the animals they receive. I love reading the personality profiles listed on kennels and shelter websites, which the staff and volunteers have taken the care and dedication to discover. Even more than 1/3 of the Purina SUPERDOGS are originally from shelters and rescues! Just in case you have been thinking of finding a new best friend, the Fort McMurray SPCA is located in Gregoire. You can help give a shelter animal their furrytail ending! The FMSPCA is a non-kill shelter, so any toy and rawhide donations, monetary gifts or even coming up and socializing with the animals are all purrfect examples of how you can help an animal in need!

Koralee Samaroden Company: 4 Paws Training Services offered: Pet Training and Pet Sitting. Obedience, Agility, Tricks, Canine Good Neighbour, Puppy Kindergarten Kitten Kindergarten – Coming Soon In Home Small Breed Dog Sitting
Be sure to research having a pet. Do you have the time? Do you have the resources? Do you have the right environment (house/apartment; kids or a baby on the way)? Pets cost money & time and they need training. Before you get that cute little puppy or kitten, do the research and make sure it is the right decision for you and the new member of your family.
Socialization is very important to start at a young age. They learn a great deal within the first 4 months of age (from bite inhibition to greeting strangers). They are little sponges wanting information and it is important to give them lots of positive reinforcement. Socialization with people of all ages, sizes, genders etc is also very important. We offer Puppy Kindergarten to assist owners of new puppies to learn how to train their dogs using positive reinforcement methods and get started on the right “paw”. We are researching kitten kindergarten and hope to be offering a class soon.
Patience, Practice, Persistence and Praise is my catch phrase. Have patience with your pet and be persistent/consistent in your expectations of the behaviours you want. Look at every day as a practice session for something and praise your pet with positive reinforcement. For each class you take with 4 Paws training, we provide information sheets on everything you have learned in the class. We are here to assist you.
Loves working with animals because: It is just been something that has always been a part of my life. I grew up in fort McMurray and my family had a petting zoo in our back yard. Lots of Memories. Koralee's Pets include: Ember Capri (8yrs old Border Collie); Karma Delphi (4 yrs old Border collie); Rizzo Mara (6 month old mix breed)

Summer Loving.
1
A Picnic in the Park
We all have those days where cooking just isn’t in the books. Rather than sitting in a restaurant, missing out on a warm evening, why not grab take-out from your favorite spot and hit a park! Borealis Park, to name one, offers the perfect setting for a date! Enjoy lunch on a picnic table overlooking the snye, there’s even a water park in the case you’re no longer a duo and have little ones to entertain! Get inspired for a picnic date by purchasing a picnic kit equipped with plastic dishes, utensils and a table cloth next time you’re out!
2
Practice your Golf Swing
Amateur or professional, a good date is guaranteed when you’re on a beautiful golf course. We’re lucky to have two 18-hole golf courses in Fort McMurray; Miskanaw at MacDonald Island Park and Fort McMurray Golf Club in Thickwood. Whether hitting balls at the driving range, playing 9 or 18 holes, or sticking to the patio, a golf course is a promising starting point for a date.
Freshly mowed grass, flowers in bloom, barbecues and patios! It’s summer in Fort McMurray, and that means prime date season!
3
Everyone wants to feel at their best in a tank-top and short-shorts. Incorporate exercise into your next date by spending time in the breath-taking Birchwood Trails. The 120+ kilometers of trails are accessible by most neighborhoods in Fort McMurray. You can even bring your furry family member along when stepping out for a date in the trails. For more information on the trails nearest you, visit www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca.

Under the Northern Lights
If you’re new to Fort McMurray, the Northern Lights are something you want to keep a look-out for! We don’t always have the luxury of going out for a date night on the town, but this doesn’t mean you can’t sneak out to your back patio or balcony; you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights! Add to your night underneath the Northern Lights with some home-made sangria. Numerous sangria recipes can be found online, as well as mocktail recipes for those under 18 years of age.
5
Our region offers so much to do and see this time of year. Don’t feel like you missed out when the snowflakes start to fall, capitalize on the long summer days by soaking up the sun with your sweetheart!
Walk, Run or Bike in the Birchwood Trails
Fun on the Beach
It’s true we may not be privileged to the ocean, here in Northern Alberta, but the Athabasca River and Gregoire Lake are beautiful and accessible to all Fort McMurrayites! Boating, tubing, water skiing and swimming are just a few activities awaiting you! Although a beach makes a great setting for a date, it’s always fun to bring along friends for a game of beach volleyball! These are only five date options you have as a Fort McMurrayite this summer. Tell us about your favorite Fort McMurray summer dates on the McMurray Girl Magazine Facebook Page!

PAT FLETT: Aboriginal Relations Specialist, Shell Canada PAT'S INSPIRATIONS: My grandmother Isabel McKay, grandfather Noel McKay and father Howard Wylie. My grandmother always worked hard to develop things to make life better. She and my grandfather gave land to build a community hall in Fort Chipewyan where the Nunee Health Office is located. They also formed a community association. They were both instrumental in developing the Cremetchip Co-operative Store and my grandmother developed the Native Handicraft Association. They were hands-on community development coordinators who created things to provide people with more choice. They were natural harvesters, who grew huge gardens and shared whatever they could. My father believed that everyone should be treated fairly and with respect – that your word was something of great value. He taught us that working hard was the best way to a good life. He grew gardens, built things, and believed that homemade was best. He taught us skills and independence – and to stand up for the 'little guy'. He taught me at a very early age that all people needed was to eat, sleep, work and play – no matter where they come from, what colour they were or what title they had. That alone has motivated me towards challenges and amazing opportunities to make a difference. HOW IS SUCCESS DISPLAYED IN YOUR LIFE? When I can make a difference with another person, my family, a community or a place of work, I feel successful. I am happiest when I stand up for what I believe in - where ever I am. My success and investment is displayed in-full with my children and grandchildren. Being a parent is the most important career possible! HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER PATH? When I was young I wanted to help people and to be part of creating good. I believe that everyday matters! Over the course of my career I have been a Store Clerk, Bookkeeper, Mother, Probation Officer, Sunday School Teacher, Employment Counselor, Justice of the Peace, Town Councillor and Chairperson, Layreader, Employment Manager, Human Resource Manager, Life Skills Facilitator, Program Developer, Socio-Economic Coordinator, Community Development Coordinator and Aboriginal Relations Specialist. These are the titles I have held, while doing work that I feel really mattered. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? I believe you can make a difference every day, wherever you are! I enjoy teaching and facilitating personal and community development as well as creating, building and developing programs. I believe that building capacity is the way to develop communities that are going to be sustainable. I create, build and enhance programs and services. I enjoy networking and connecting people with the same principles and values. I plan to continue learning and paying it forward!

NorthWord
NorthWord Fort McMurray's Literary Magazine | by Kiran Malik-Khan
Fort McMurray's literary magazine Call it a coincidence that just happened maybe for McMurray Girl. At the time of this writing, NorthWord, Fort McMurray’s first and only literary magazine is entirely run by women. Co-founders Suzanne McGladdery, Jane Jacques, and Kiran Malik-Khan (that’s me) are the President, Managing Editor, and Media Directors respectively, while Cathy Yard is the Treasurer. Together, along with a handful of volunteers, they form the Northern Canada Collective Society for Writers, founded five years ago - a local group that has the mandate to publish and support the works of writers in northern Canada. Little known fact: many co-founders pitched in personal funds to publish the first magazine.
Two issues are published each year; the ninth one just came out early this June. Themes are picked by guest editors, who then blindly judge submissions. Issue #9 sported a theme of Change picked by Dawn Booth, also the general manager/editor of Snap Wood Buffalo newspaper. Suzanne McGladdery, group President says NorthWord’s evolution is a true embodiment of the spirit of Wood Buffalo. “We started with an idea and got together on a whim. Today the publication is an established institution,” explains Suzanne, who has been in Fort McMurray for 42 years, and is the Heavy Equipment Admissions Advisor for Keyano College. Jane Jacques, Managing Editor, agrees. An English instructor for Keyano, Jane has been a 25-year resident of Fort McMurray. She says it’s exciting to see the amount of literary talent in the region. “The strong response from local writers, particularly women has been great. All submissions are judged blindly – your name is taken off, so you don’t have to be nervous about submitting your pieces,” shares Jane. She says NorthWord has given her the opportunity to contribute to the community. “I’m excited with every new issue – how the contributions come together from theme to the final product.” Guest editor for Issue #9, Dawn Booth highly recommends becoming a guest editor to everyone. “It is not time-consuming.. I strongly encourage others to become a guest editor for NorthWord. For me, it wasn't life changing. It was life reflecting. I thought I knew what to expect - that I would choose the theme and casually pick my favourites. But it wasn't that easy. I felt beside myself with excitement, joy... even anger, while reading the submissions. I really escaped into the realm of people's words through the process. And the end result, I feel is a great collaboration of change,” explains Dawn. Issue #9 will be officially launched on Saturday, September 28 in conjunction with Alberta Culture Days at Holy Trinity High School. NorthWord will lead the official spoken word portion of the festivities.
68
The group is now calling for Issue #10 submissions. The theme is Chiaroscuro: Shades of Black and White to be guest edited by local writer Nathan Berube. Short stories or excerpts from current projects, fiction or non-fiction (3000 words maximum), verse of maximum 50 lines, along with anything surprising and original can be submitted to the editors at northword@hushmail.com.
Photo L-R: Suzanne McGladdery, President, NorthWord, Cathy Yard, Treasurer, Dawn Booth, Issue #9 guest editor and Jane Jacques, Managing Editor are the ladies of NorthWord. Media Director Kiran Malik-Khan is missing because she wrote the article. :)
NorthWord is free and available at the Keyano College Bookstore, Keyano Reception (front desk) Sunshine Café by Mitchell’s in the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Frames and More, and the Thickwood YMCA. Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/northword and follow us on Twitter: @NorthWordYMM.
