Thinking about choosing a new, ruby hair hue for fall? Stylists from Milada's Beauty Studio in Eagle Ridge share their top 5 tips and products for ravishing reds.
Make sure to choose a shade of red that compliments your own skin's natural undertones. Cooler skin tones should choose cool reds, while warmer skin tones should choose warmer, copper shades.
health & beauty
Consider the colour.
Wash Smart.
When washing your radiantly red hair, a color locking shampoo and conditioner is crucial. Take your maintenance routine one step further and brave the cooler waters. Washing your hair in cold water helps seal the cuticle of your hair, preventing your color from releasing.
Try Dry. Washing strips away colour, so limit your washes! Use a tinted dry shampoo to help blend growth (even grays!) in between colors while holding you over to your next shampoo.

Revlon Nutri Color Crème is our secret weapon – this at home treatment gives your color a 2 week refresh in between your appointments. These color balls are the perfect solution to prolonging your color, giving you that ‘fresh from the salon’ radiancy without breaking the bank!
Protect & Perfect Use a UV protectant finishing product to help keep the sun from fading your color. We love a blend of Eufora Sculpture Styling Glaze and Eufora Illuminate Shine to add shine, volume and UV protection.

What is your style philosophy?
NI Distribution Centre
Be confident & have fun with it! Fashion means something different to everyone. Personally I’m a chameleon. I love switching up my look. I dress for the day, depending on the weather & events I have going on (usually casual professional). I do love dressing up & going all out for parties and events. I try to only buy pieces that I love & not like. 'Loves' I will wear, 'likes' get put into the back of the closet & forgotten about.

Where do you pull inspiration for your own style and the clothing you bring into Drop Dead Darlings? I get inspired through constant research. I have learned to appreciate many different types of fashion, through my love of travelling. For the store, I read a lot of fashion magazines & blogs. I’m constantly researching the upcoming styles & trends. I also get a lot of inspiration from people watching when I travel. Our customers inspire me as well; I listen to what they want! I try to buy a wide variety of things to cater to the different types of customers that shop in our store. Sexy, conservative, rocker, hipsters, party and everyday looks for all body types.
Julie's must-haves
for every wardrobe
Little Black Dress
Black Tights or Leggings
(or 2) that are suited for your body type.
A great way to rock a short dress & make legs look slim.
Tailored Blazer to fit you in all the right places.
Printed Scarf & Accessories to jazz up basic tee’s & tanks.

What was the last fashion purchase YOU made? I’m obsessed with my new leather jacket from Soia & Kyo, a trendy new outerwear line available at DDD this fall!
Classic Trench Coat This never goes out of style.
A flattering pair of jeans
Julie's tips Open your mind. Always take the “its not me” outfit into the change room. You never know!
MY STORY Co-owner and primary buyer for the Drop Dead Darlings Boutique, this entrepreneur has a fabulous success story, style, and a big heart! Happily engaged to Jeff Legault, co-owner of Earls Fort McMurray, Julie cherishes her extensive friend group that she says 'doubles as her family.'
Hit the dressing room prepared! If you are looking for an important outfit, bring your shapewear, lipstick & shoes. They will give you a better sense of the look for your big event.
When in doubt, wear nude pumps. They are a safe bet and make legs look longer.
Create your own look book. If you received compliments on your outfit today, snap a photo with your phone to remind you what to wear when you’re in a rush.
Never buy a boring coat. Outerwear shouldn’t be an afterthought. During Fort Mac winters, so many people only see you in your coat!
Embrace your shape! Find a silhouette that flatters you.
What is your classic, go-to look? This varies depending on my mood & the season. During summertime, I live in maxi dresses, a jean jacket and a fabulous pair of open toe wedge shoes. Winter is all about layering for me. My “uniform” as my girlfriends call it: knee-high leather boots, leggings, a long tank top, tunic top or dress and my long black blazer. It’s the go-to outfit I always feel comfortable yet classy in.

Born & raised in Edmonton, I come from a large family - I’m the oldest of 6 siblings. I studied business at NAIT and education at the UofA, where I majored in business. My first job - and introduction to fashion retail was at a clothing store in downtown Edmonton. Over the years, I have travelled extensively, having lived abroad for 6 years in London & Madrid. I was re-introduced to the fashion industry years later while working with my friend for her wholesale jewelry company – BauXo. While working various trade shows throughout North America, I gained the valuable knowledge of buying and selling fashion and accessories. In the year 2000, I moved to Fort McMurray for four months – then again in 2006 to be closer to my siblings, Heather & Dustin, and nephew, Noah. I had always wanted to pursue my dream of owning a clothing store and being my own boss. Shortly after arriving, I realized the tremendous opportunity that Fort McMurray had to offer. Drop Dead Darlings was started by my business partner Dorcas and I in September of 2008. It started out as an online store (that used to deliver!) We converted my home garage into a carpeted office/showroom. We started out small-scale with the dream of becoming a trendy, fun, brick & mortar store. We progressed to selling at school markets, patio sales at Earls, trade shows, and fashion shows in various local businesses. We opened the brick & mortar store in February 2011 & haven’t looked back since!
fun facts Hablo Espanol!
I’m also a high school teacher –
I have a degree in Education If I wasn't in fashion, I'd be an event planner.
I love throwing parties.
My favourite places to shop in town are: Chatters, Little Heroes, and the gift shop at Heritage Park – they have such a unique selection of gift ideas!

Why do you think Drop Dead Darlings is a success?
Julie poses with Drop Dead Darlings Boutique stylists. Photo © Virginia Frank Photography
We have stylists that are awesome at what they do and are there to help you with your shopping needs. We offer boutique style clothing, limited quantities, with new styles arriving weekly. Limited quantities allow our shoppers to be on-trend without seeing everyone in town with the same outfit. We started out small with dreams of growing big and here we are, "the sky is the limit!"

I think that DDD is successful due to pure passion, determination, and all the continuous support from family, friends, employees and loyal customers over the years. I also believe that this has contributed to the growth of our company through word of mouth and constant local exposure and advertising. We love our clients and value customer service, striving to provide a pleasant shopping experience to all. I feel the service we offer makes us stand out from the ordinary shopping experience.

Leather Leather is a hot, hot, hot trend this fall! Watch for leather details appearing on everything from shirts and jackets to dresses and leggings. Leather accessories (such as BauXo) are an inexpensive way to work this trend into your wardrobe. Knee high leather boots have been spotted all over the runways and will stay trendy this fall. Not in your budget? Wear leather leggings with the same colored ankle boots to achieve the look for less. Model is wearing pleather trim military tank, pleather leggings and a studded wrap cuff. Being fashion-forward goes deeper than just the clothes you wear. Selecting undergarments can make or break your look and your outfit. Just like building a home, you start with the foundation. You may not see it, but it's critical to the support and look of your new home. The same goes for bras. Wearing a properly fitted bra can make you look up to 10 pounds lighter, create a slimmer silhouette and waistline, and improve posture and overall well-being. A properly fitted bra creates the best foundation underneath your clothing. Whether it’s strapless, racerback, or halter, there are certain undergarments that every fashion savvy woman should keep in her boudoir. The ladies of local lingerie shop, Belle La Vie help McMurray Girls get a boost on bra fitting know-how… and so much more!

choosing the
Best Bra With Belle La Vie At Belle La Vie, we believe in empowering women to look and feel their best – one bra at a time! Through a professional bra fitting, women can experience a whole new sense of well-being. A properly fitted bra can alleviate back, shoulder and neck pain, headaches and improve posture while creating a slimming silhouette. We understand that shopping for a bra can be an uncomfortable and frustrating experience. At Belle La Vie, we have created an environment where women can feel comfortable and secure, while finding a properly fitted bra. 24
fall 2013 | mcmurraygirl.com
Belle La Vie is an upscale bra fitting, lingerie and swimwear boutique focusing on European designs. Having originally opened at 36 Riedel Street, Belle La Vie is pleased to announce their plans for expansion into a larger boutique in Eagle Ridge’s East Village this Fall.
Common mistakes when selecting a new bra: 1. 90 Percent of the support in a bra comes from the band. Women will often choose a more relaxed fit thinking this will provide more comfort, support and minimize back fat. However the opposite is true. A properly fitted snug band will provide support needed as well as reducing the appearance of back fat. 2. There is no perfect bra - Buying a bra may take a little time. Everyone’s body is different. To find the most flattering fit, be sure to try on several styles. 3. You get what you pay for - Department stores often carry low-quality, poorly made bras that fit badly. Higher-quality brands, which offer more size options, are designed for real women’s shapes and sizes.
Bras and beyond, Belle La Vie boasts amazingly luxurious product lines, right here in Fort McMurray. In store you’ll find celebrity favourites, from nursing bras beloved by the Kardashians to BedHead sleepwear found on Oprah’s ‘Favourite Things’ list! Embrace the luxury of handmade, high quality bras from European designers such as Prima Donna (designers of the two most popular bras sold in North America), Empreinte, Chantelle, Simone Perele, and Aubade to name a few. If you are heading on a fall beach vacation, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can assist you in finding a swimsuit that offers support and comfort while still reflecting you personal style. Designer bridal lingerie by Jonquil out of New York and silks by Christine Vancouver (One of Oprah's Favourites) will make you look and feel radiant on your special night. Are you an expectant mother and choosing to nurse? The boutique offers a wide variety of nursing bras by Hotmilk as well as nursing lingerie and sleepwear.
In addition, be sure to check out their organic body lotion and perfume collections (touted by Oprah) – one in particular see’s partial proceeds donated to Girls Inc. of Fort McMurray!
6 must-haves Not sure where to start? Belle La Vie suggests the six undergarments that every woman should have in their wardrobe:
Seamed
Provides optimum support and defines shape
Seamless
Your t-shirt wearing bra.
Sexy
Enhances shape and can be worn under low necked garments.
Sport
Provides support while exercising
Strapless
Shapewear
Appropriate under strapless, low back and halter garments Don’t forget about shapewear to create a flawless form beneath your LBD or Gala Party Dress!
This is our bottom line We strive to develop resources in ways that deliver economic prosperity, social well-being and a healthy environment. It’s a continuous journey of learning, engaging, improving. And a journey we’re proud to be making. Discover more in the 2013 Report on Sustainability at suncor.com/sustainability

Integrity, courage, leadership, and compassion at its best – these are just a few of the recurring adjectives people use to describe Cindy Amerongen. A soft-spoken, well-known community leader and featured SPOTLIGHT TALKSHOW guest, Cindy is the Manager of Community and Consultation for Nexen. It’s a position she recently accepted after 23 years with Keyano College. Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia to an armed forces family, Cindy’s early childhood memories are of growing up in Germany, with high school completed in Cold Lake, and then graduation from NAIT in Edmonton. She moved to Fort McMurray 23 years ago via Calgary, with her husband, Rob. The couple has been married for 28 years, and have two grown daughters. “Fort McMurray is never static. The city has given me confidence in my abilities to do my work; and this comes from the nature of our community and tons of support,” says Cindy, who also has a master's degree in education and leadership from Athabasca University.

Cindy has worked in a number of positions during her time at Keyano, including Bookstore Manager, Continuing Education Coordinator, Executive Director of Alberta-North, and Director of Development for the Keyano College Foundation before becoming Vice President of External Relations five years ago overseeing Keyano’s Marketing & Communications Department as well as the Theatre & Arts Centre. She says the reason for switching careers was to explore the business side of community investment to balance knowledge of the receiving side. “There is so much happening with social and corporate responsibility. It was time to have a closer look.” Last year at McMurray Girl’s gala event, Cindy was named McMurray Girl of the Year. This was in recognition of her many efforts for her work with Keyano College whether fundraising for buildings such as the $36 million Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, the $3.5 million dollar Fort Chipewyan Campus, multi-million dollar Power & Process Engineering Lab, or taking the College’s Foundation to a multi-million dollar level from just $700,000 when she began. She is also the Director of Opening/Closing Ceremonies and Culture for the Western Canada Summer Games 2015, sits on the Chamber of Commerce board; and can often be seen lending support to young community leaders, especially women. “I know what it is like to be a young mom, raising children and doing things. I understand that,” she shares.

As for being in the SPOTLIGHT, the humble Cindy says she is touched, and appreciates the honour, but there are other women out there doing more. She congratulates McMurray Girl for the event. “I feel there are so many deserving women of the honour. Thanks to McMurray Girl for shining on the achievements and attributes of these women. I commend everyone involved in highlighting these women.”

In a town where everyone is busy working on the next big project, Kim Rizzi is truly busy. She is responsible for bringing you the highly-anticipated Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) 2015. Games Manager for the WCSG, SPOTLIGHT’s panelist Kim boasts a 25-year career in sport administration. She was the Executive Director of the Canadian Deaf Sports Association where she prepared Team Canada, and has had leadership roles with the Olympics, Pan American Games, Canada Games and the Arctic Winter Games. Kim moved to Fort McMurray last October, and was pleasantly surprised by her initial visit to our town. “Like many others, I had preconceived notions. Fort McMurray is everything I thought it wasn’t,” she recalls. “I get to work with some of the brightest lights in Fort McMurray. People like John Wilson, Tom O’Hara, Heather Kennedy, who are now my mentors,” continues Kim. Her family moved across the country from Montreal - her husband of 10 years Franco, two children Camilla, 11 and Anthony, 9. “It was a gutsy move. We had good jobs in Montreal; children were in private schools. But, it’s great. I’ve never felt community the way I feel it like here. We love it,” she adds. After a very hectic day at work, she then finds time to volunteer also. She sits on the 2015 CFL Northern Kick-off board, and co-chairs the venue committee. Originally, from Dauphin, Manitoba, Kim grew up on a farm, and says she has never forgotten where she came from – it is what keeps her grounded. “I get my work ethic from growing up on a farm. My parents were hard working people and there wasn’t time to sit around. I speak to my mom daily who inspires me. They farmed, owned a business, raised kids and she was able to balance it all,” recalls Kim. Kim’s experience isn’t only on the administrative side, Rizzi, who played high performance sports all her life, received a scholarship to play for the Brandon University Bobcats basketball team where she received her Bachelor of Education degree, and played competitive beach volleyball. “I honestly do not believe there’s anything I can’t do.”

Kim believes at some point in their career women need to re-brand themselves. She did so first-hand. From being the General Manager of the 2002 Arctic Winter Games in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the first ever multisport games hosted in Nunavut, Kim went on to become the Director of Economic Development for the City of Iqaluit. “We have to embrace our strengths and maximize them,” she advises. “I have quickly realized some of the best leaders in the country live here. Mayor Blake, senior administrative municipal staff, in industry, Keyano College – everyone wants to see the best for Fort McMurray. I’m impressed.” She’s impressive herself – being in the SPOTLIGHT, says Kim is flattering. “There are so many emerging women leaders here. This is quite the honour. I’m proud to be selected.”

D’Andre Wilson-Ihejirika isn’t sure what to expect from the SPOTLIGHT gala event, but our panelist is delighted to be selected. “McMurray Girl is a pretty prominent name. I’m very excited,” she enthused. Originally from the Bahamas, D’Andre comes from a close knit family. Her parents are accountants. She moved to Fort McMurray last April, and is a Project Development Lead for Suncor Energy, which includes working with the technical team and economic group. She was offered a full-time position following her internship with the oil sands giant in 2011. “The internship prepared me for the cold weather in Fort McMurray, but it was the short days that really surprised me when I moved here permanently,” shared D’Andre. D’Andre moved to Canada from the Bahamas in 2006 to pursue an undergraduate in Chemical Engineering at McGill University. Next came a Master’s degree in Financial Engineering from the University of Toronto. She is also newly married. Her boyfriend Nnaziri became her husband last September. His name inspired D’Andre to name her business My Ziri Bags, which features high-end purses and accessories.

Ziri bags are styled with African wax-print cotton featuring a special dyeing technique called Batique. D’Andre allots a portion of the sales for science and engineering scholarships for girls who are interested in engineering, are community-oriented, and who may not be able to afford school otherwise. Winner of the Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Award in the Newcomer Engagement category, she is also the founder of BrainSTEM Alliance, which provides outreach programming featuring science, math, and relevant technology programming, especially for girls. In addition, according to the official website “BrainSTEM is a consulting group that works in collaboration with non-profit, charity, and educational institutions to create customized curricula for workshops, programs and conferences that promote education of STEM, leadership and entrepreneurship to youth.” D’Andre says it is fascinating to see how girls take to chemical, mechanical and civil engineering something she missed. “Engineering is not promoted in the Bahamas. Most people just want to be doctors. I was always good at science and math. Engineering struck my fancy during high school, and I wanted to promote it among girls.” She went on to create an eight-week program for Girls Inc., called GirlSMART, which was very well-received. “They couldn’t wait to come back. Volunteers from the oil sands donated their time and engage in hands-on activities with them,” she explained.

merchandise store will ensure nobody leaves without tangible, beautiful memories. A torch relay all over Western Canada and the Territories, will start off the event. “For 99% of the athletes this will be their Olympics, or a stepping stone for junior and national events. We want to give them a world-class event,” continued Rizzi. | by Kiran Malik-Khan
“Make it the biggest and the best in your career.” With these words to Kim Rizzi, General Manager 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, and Mayor Melissa Blake sealed the deal on the production of the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games – and what promises to be the biggest event in our region’s history. “I have never experienced anything like this. Municipalities often nickel and dime you, and expect you to not overdue it,” shares Rizzi, who took over the Games last October and has a 25-year career in sport and administration. Her leadership roles in organized sports range from the Olympics to the Arctic Winter Games. “I have never worked with such a supportive municipality in my career”. The 2015 Western Canada Summer Games are coming to Wood Buffalo from August 7-16. An estimated 2500 athletes, and 14,000 visitors will be in our city for the event. Athletes ranging in ages 12-20 will compete in 18 diverse sports such as badminton, canoeing, golf, volleyball and triathlon to name a few. Opening Ceremonies will take place in Shell Place at MacDonald Island slated for completion in 2015. The current budget for the event is $7.9 million, which Rizzi says is under review, and set to go up. There is an estimated $70-80 million regional economic impact as a result of hosting games such as the Western Canada Summer Games. The Games board is being co-chaired on an interim basis, by well-known community leaders John Wilson and Heather Kennedy. An amazing 77 committees are overseeing disparate aspects like Opening/Closing Ceremonies, Culture, Venues, Food Services, Communication, and Security to name a few. Rizzi takes the security element seriously. “As a parent I think about safety as a priority. When a mom puts a 12-year-old on a bus to come to the games, she’s putting us in charge of her child’s safety. So what you give is your 200%,” she emphasized. MacDonald Island will be the Games Park, with volleyball and basketball centred at Keyano College. And, while the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games office was just opened in early June with a staff of six, special attention is being paid to make sure amenities for athletes are centralized. “I was an athlete so I understand what athletes need on a high level. We want to do this without putting pressure on our existing infrastructure,” explained Rizzi who played University basketball and competitive beach volleyball. The nine-day event will also feature cultural events, modelled after the Olympics. A stage with cauldron and a countdown clock will add to the allure of the games, while serving as a focal point. A professional production company will be designing the ceremonies, while a national host broadcaster will relay the events to the nation, and beyond. A Games
At the end of the day, Rizzi says the Games will be a “catalyst to changing Wood Buffalo’s narrative.” People will know we can host gargantuan events on a national and international level. “The 2015 Western Canada Summer Games has the capacity to change mind sets. We’ll have 14,000 new ambassadors and national media coverage. This will be our stepping stone to greatness. We have the facilities and community support. We all have a job to do – presenting Fort McMurray in the best light. Everyone’s in; nobody’s flinching,” Rizzi enthused.

embracin For Fort McMurray “girls” working in the rapidly evolving oil sands sector, past, present and future are always changing. The many women of Suncor who live and work in our city embrace change in their careers and the community.
Ann-Marie Mulhall’s
present is very different from her past. Although she loves what it looks like today, she’s focused on working toward a future that will include new challenges and successes. Ann-Marie came to Fort McMurray in 2006 to work in human resources at the hospital and joined Suncor as HR Manager for Operations, supporting Extraction and Maintenance in 2009. Childless when she arrived, she’s now the mother of two. That’s one of the reasons she recently made a change in her career path, moving from a position managing recruitment for Suncor to a generalist role as Manager of Human Resources supporting Operations. “With two children, a husband, three dogs and a nanny, I’m embedded in the community,” she says. “I enjoyed how flexible and dynamic a generalist role can be and I wanted the opportunity to do it again.” Ann-Marie loved Fort McMurray the first time she visited and appreciates how the community is constantly improving. She does her part as Vice President of Events Wood Buffalo and as a volunteer fitness instructor. She believes the passion and energy here will help create an even better community in the future.
Ann-Marie Mulhall

While treasuring the present, Ann-Marie is actively managing her career by pursuing her next challenge. And, she’s working to create brilliant futures for other women in the industry, helping with women networking initiatives and encouraging more women to manage their careers.
ngchange “You look around the boardroom table and wonder why there aren’t more women, and there are a lot of reasons for that. I think many women have the perception that you can’t juggle children and career in a senior position, but you actually tend to have more flexibility in leadership roles. We need diversification around the table,” Ann-Marie explains.
Michelle Liebau came to Fort McMurray from Ontario six
years ago in search of summer employment. What she found surprised her—a community of big-hearted people willing to help a stranger. She never looked back. Suncor has been an integral part of Michelle’s future. In 2010, she was hired as an Onboarding Supervisor in Mining. Her goal was to be a field supervisor and she found a company interested in helping her achieve that. About a year and a half ago, she made it and is now a Mine Operations Workforce Supervisor. When Michelle looks at her past and present, she sees the enormous amount of opportunity the community offers. “I gained so much from moving to Fort McMurray. I went from having no oil sands experience, to getting on-the-job training and an exciting and challenging career. Suncor encouraged me to continue my education and I am now enrolled in Athabasca University’s business management program. At 22, I was able to purchase my own home,” she says.
Photo © Virginia Frank Photography
Like Ann-Marie, Michelle is working toward new career goals, and senses that industry is ready to welcome more women into leadership positions. “There still isn’t a lot of female presence in the mine. But, I’m seeing a lot of promotional opportunities in our company for women who are passionate, hard-working and assertive, and who want to advance their careers.” While the community has certainly grown since Michelle arrived, the spirit of helpfulness is still here. Michelle contributes to that spirit by volunteering with the SPCA, and helping newcomers get their feet on the ground.
Michelle Liebau
Building on the past, enjoying the present, and taking an active role in creating the futures of their dreams, Ann-Marie and Michelle are great examples of what’s possible for McMurray “girls”. 41

R ound : If your face’s width and length are fairly equal and chin is rounded – not angled, your face would be described as round. Boser Vision suggests these geometric frames from Ray Ban. Frames such as these will add angular definition to your face and sharpen your features. Rectangular frames draw the eye horizontally, creating the illusion of a longer face beneath the glasses. Oval: If your facial features are balanced, with a slightly narrower chin than forehead, your face shape is oval. The good news for you is that most styles will work with this face shape, as long as they are not too large for your features. Boser Vision has chosen a pair by Rye & Lye which have attractive, soft curves for an overall pleasing look. Glasses: Rye & Lye 54-19/140 C2 Available at Boser Vision

This fall, skip contacts and have some fun choosing a new pair of fashion-forward frames. Not only are glasses convenient, but when you choose the right pair for YOU, you have the ability to create balance, dimension and even a slimmer look! Boser Vision helps us choose frames to accent and compliment everyone's natural features.

Turbine was established in January of 1997 after designer Drader-Murphy discovered a stock of highend vintage tailoring wool in the warehouse of an employer. After months of designing, pattern development, and production, the first Turbine store; Power Clothes for Women, was opened in downtown Calgary's trendy Inglewood neighborhood. The collection was well received and exceeded all expectations. Drader-Murphy never received government grants or funding, expanding her business solely with Turbine’s retained earnings. A second Calgary store opened shortly after at The Eau Claire Market on Prince's Island Park. In 1998, with a 3rd store slated for Banff, an opportunity presented itself to Lisa and her husband Carey to move their young family to beautiful Nova Scotia. The temptation to enjoy a slower pace and family-friendly lifestyle was too great to resist. When Lisa moved the business to Canada's East Coast, she maintained its cosmopolitan aesthetic, continuing to appear on runways, contribute to fashion shoots, and keep Turbine in the media spotlight. Since establishing Turbine in 1997, her business has garnered national and international buzz, with coverage including CTV, CBC, LIFE, Canadian Learning Television, Global TV, TNT, NY Times, USA Today, BFM France, NRJ, Canal+, Entertainment Tonight, ELLE, Flare, and CNN. Lisa has also been invited to the celebrity gifting suites during the Toronto International Film Festival, the Golden Globes, Oscars, and the Cannes Film Festival. Presently Turbine has produced 75,000 pieces to date, sold through the flagship boutique in Halifax Bishop’s Landing, The Design Studio in Falmouth, through exclusive Trunk Shows and personalized shopping experiences.
The Turbine Fund In 2003, The Turbine Fund was formed with a mandate to “Empower Women through Education, Support, and Example,”. The Turbine Fund supports numerous charity events through Turbine product donations, sponsorships, public speaking engagements, and volunteering. Collectively, Drader-Murphy’s charitable work has supported the charitable fundraising of over one million dollars. The Turbine Fund shows preference to charitable organizations that receive little to no government funding.
O P E N

The Turbine India Project In 2012 Lisa embarked on a solo journey to India, taking a break from the celebrity culture that was becoming a big part of her business. While there, she stayed on the outskirts of Hyderabad, slept on a mat, bathed from a bucket, and spent long days visiting mothers and children in the neighboring slums. Accepting an invitation to speak at a small paramedical college, Lisa was touched by the young women and their desire to study. The hardships they faced were unimaginable. Many of the women slept under tarps, with no running water or power. Some had suffered severe abuse from husbands and family members. Upon returning home, Drader-Murphy formed the Turbine India Project and began earmarking funds through donating her speaking fees and proceeds from beautiful bangles that she discovered in the ancient market of Charminar. Last term, The Turbine India Project provided full bursaries and room and board for 38 women from the slums who had never dreamed that a college education could be a reality.

message from Mayor Melissa Blake It’s a great time of year for new beginnings, McMurray Girls! Summer shifts into autumn. Our golden McMurray Girl tans fade while the golden leaves of our boreal forest overtake the landscape. A new school year spells new adventures for young people and parents alike. And the pace picks up around town as folks return from leisurely holidays. Given the change of season, now is a good time to slip into a new style, try a new trend, modify your makeup, or browse a new boutique. If you choose to change things up, I encourage you to first take a look locally and check out some of our great businesses and entrepreneurs. Dust off your phone book, search online, or put a call out on social media… you’ll be amazed to see what is offered here. And don’t forget, you may not have a use for certain clothes or accessories but others might. So take previously (and gently!) used items and drop them off at one of our social profits to share with others. We have an abundance of blessings in our region so let’s be generous with each other. Speaking about blessings, the fall also means turkey time! Thanksgiving provides a wonderful opportunity to gather with family and friends and be thankful for all that we have. But holidays can also be very stressful. You can ease some of that stress and assist families in need by supporting local charities, particularly the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. Helping our neighbour and building community is certainly something that never goes out of style. I hope you enjoy this Style edition of McMurray Girl and find many valuable tips and techniques. I wish all of you an enjoyable autumn!
Sincerely, Melissa Blake, Mayor

RMWB Election Q&A
The upcoming municipal election presents an important opportunity to shape the community we call home. In 2010, just 20% of RMWB residents were recorded at the polls – among the lowest in the province. This year, make it a point to cast YOUR vote and exercise your right to democracy! If you are a Canadian citizen 18 years of age or more, who has been living in Alberta for the past 6 months and lives in the Municipality on election day – you are eligible to vote! All you’ll need is one piece of government issued photo ID or two pieces of non-photo ID. Joanne Wall, the Municipality’s Returning Officer answers McMurray Girl Magazine’s questions to explain the election process and help you plan your vote!
How and where do people vote? On election day, voting stations will be set up throughout the Municipality. Residents can vote only at the voting station in their subdivision. Prior to election day, the municipal website will have a “where to vote” feature that residents can use to find the correct voting station. In Fort McMurray, advance voting will be available on the following dates and locations from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. each day: • Jubilee Centre Council Chamber – October 7-11 and October 15-18 • Ecole McTavish Junior High – October 9, 11, 12 and 16 • MacDonald Island Park – October 12 and 19 Note: advance polls for Ward 1 are modified polls so that voters from other wards can vote at those locations as well.
Advance voting is also available in the rural service area on October 9, 11, 12 and 16 from 9:00am until 8:00pm each day at: Janvier Municipal Office, Mamawi Community Hall, Fort Chipewyan, Fort MacKay Public School, Vista Ridge, Saprae Creek, Anzac Community Hall, Nakewin Community Hall, Conklin
Who makes a good candidate to run for the mayor and council positions? Anyone who is genuinely interested in shaping the future of the Municipality is a good candidate. Candidates must be eligible to vote and live in the ward in which she/he is running for at least six full months prior to election day. The Local Authorities Election Act lists all of the specific criteria that would make potential candidate ineligible. All candidates are required to complete a nomination form, which must be signed by at least five eligible voters from his/her ward, and they are required to pay a nomination deposit (Mayor - $250; Councillors - $100). Find out more about the process by attending one of our upcoming candidate information sessions.
The municipal election is set for Monday,
Oct 21st
What is the scope of the commitment required of council members? The Mayor’s position is considered full-time, and the Councillors are part-time. The Mayor can work anywhere from 40-80 hours per week, depending on current issues and events. Councillors typically work 20+ hours per week. Much of that work consists of attending and preparing for meetings, but also includes participating in various community events and functions and sitting as Council’s appointed representative on other boards and committees. The annual salaries for the Mayor and Councillors are $123,353 and $36,328, respectively, with one-third being tax-exempt. The Municipal Government Act (MGA) sets out the specific responsibilities for the Mayor and Councillors. Detailed information can be found in the candidate information package on the municipal website at: www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/elections.
How can residents learn more about the candidates running and their platforms? After nominations are received on September 23rd, a complete list of candidates and their contact information will be posted on the municipal website. The Municipality does not otherwise promote candidates or their respective platforms.
How can people get involved? Paid municipal election worker positions are available. Download and submit the online application: (www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/elections) or call 780.743.7001 for more information. In addition, candidates often need volunteers. Anyone interested in working on a specific candidate’s campaign can make arrangements by contacting them directly. Last, but definitely not least, people can get involved by VOTING! Complete information is available at:

1 I moved to F ort M c M urr ay at the end of J une in 1 9 8 2 and we stayed with relatives until we could rent our first home in Abasand. My family’s first purchased home a few years later was in Beacon Hill, then as an adult I bought land in Saprae Creek, a mobile home in Gregoire, rented again myself in Abasand, my first house was downtown and now, I have a family home in Timberlea… yup, I’ve been around!

I w a s 1 2 when we moved into our first pl a c e . On move in day we had a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken to celebrate our new home… well, at least my family did. I was actually celebrating that I had finally convinced my mother to stop forcing me to eat meat! I’ve been a vegetarian (who hates onions, garlic, pickles, peppers and mushrooms) for 32 years, but I still crave those 11 secret herbs and spices!
I a m a PA D I c ertified s c ub a diving instru c tor (non-teaching status), who jumped in every local pond, lake and puddle to achieve the required number of dives to qualify. But my true love of diving drives me to exotic locations and the search for dazzling fish and coral, to sea lions, manta rays and shark dives!
I a m a pug lover . I recently welcomed a second little wrinkly one into my home after the pet edition of McMurray Girl Magazine inspired me… thank goodness the family edition didn’t do the same!
I w a sn ’ t born here but my two sons were , a nd so w a s their d a d . I also imagine my grandchildren will be born here too… and that they will come visit us at Willow Square, on smooth-flowing roads, in the best place to live - in the entire world! (Yup, we’ll still be around!) Sure, I’m an ambitious dreamer, but with hard work and collaboration Wood Buffalo is the place where dreams become reality.

meet the migirls of fitness. With our eye on trends this fall, McMurray Girl realizes that underneath the clothes that we wear - the confidence and vibrance that comes with physical fitness and well-being is something that is ALWAYS in fashion. We talk with three of MacDonald Island Park's fitness Mi Team members to gain some fall fit-spiration!
set a fitness
routine
Beata's tip is to schedule your designated workout days in advance and keep those appointments with yourself! If you can, complete your workout first thing in the morning so regardless what the day throws at you, you're already done.
If you're looking to transform your physique, Sheila says that weight training is tops! "Don't just let the weight move you, increase the tension in your muscles and move the weight. Adding muscle to your frame creates the building blocks of a body that looks great with clothes off as well as on. Exercise for progress, not for perfection. Don't expect huge changes from your body overnight. It takes time to build a house and it takes time to sculpt a body. Create some short term fitness goals to keep you motivated." If you're ready to take a step in a more fit direction, Melissa suggests speaking to any of the Fitness Specialists, "we are always happy to provide helpful advice and the correct information you need to get fit." www.macdonaldisland.ca/sport-fitness

Wearing the wrong workout clothes can impact the success and overall results of your workout, so it is important to consider purpose, fabric and fit when choosing what to wear. Here are some tips from Keyano Sport & Wellness to help you look and feel your best.
The material of your clothes is more important than you may think. Your big old comfy cotton t-shirt from race day 1999 might be your favourite shirt to wear, however it might not be the best choice. Cotton can actually prevent your body from cooling down properly both during and after your workouts. The best material to choose is a polyester or Lycra blend. These moisturewicking fabrics help keep sweat away from your skin and will help your body regulate its temperature throughout your entire workout. You also don’t want your clothes to be too big. While we think we look smaller in bigger clothes they actually have the opposite effect. Too much fabric can cause uncomfortable chafing. Clothes that fit tighter to the body will allow your body to move freely with no restrictions, resulting in optimal performance. To keep your moisture wicking fabrics at their finest – skip the fabric softener. Softener clings to the fibres and prevents them from doing their job properly. A lot of fabrics come with anti-fungal properties which also keep them from smelling like they have been sitting in your gym bag all year round, anyway. In addition to fabric you should consider dressing in layers. Not only is this a functional way to keep your temperature regulated – it will help you get the most out of your wardrobe all year

round. Many of today's designs have dual purpose features to help keep you cool in summer and warm in winter, so having a “summer” and “winter” wardrobe is just not necessary. You also might want to think about reflective stripes on your sleeves or down the side of your torso if you plan on taking your workouts outside - but keep them above the waist. Stripes down the side of your legs can make your legs look bigger than they are (and for the most part, went out of style with button down pants!)

When exercising outside you may also want to invest in a running belt, which is a modern take on the fanny pack. Water is very important when working out and if you get used to wearing a belt you can keep water and even snacks with you to ensure you will always get the most out of your workout. Wal-Mart sells a variety of running belts that allow you to store water, snacks, house keys and even your cell-phone. Finally, you want to make sure you have proper shoes. Yes you may be convinced your three-year-old Nikes are the “best shoes ever” – but they may not actually be what is best for you. As annoying as breaking in new shoes may be, it is actually recommended to change your shoes every six months or so depending on how much you use them. After so much use, the soles of your shoes become worn and no longer do their job. If you are experiencing any pain in your feet, knees or shins, it may be time to bite the bullet and put your Nikes back on the shelf. As tempting as it is, take a pause before you jump on the Vibram train. Vibrams utilize the concept of “bare foot” technology which is meant to make your feet strong and promote a natural form of movement and ultimate body alignment for health. The problem is that after years of wearing high arch shoes and thick soles our bodies are not in a natural state. If you are looking to transition, make sure you do it slowly and safely. Do not strap on your fivefinger shoes and go for an hour run right out the gate. Your feet, knees and hips will take time adjusting to the different movement and recruitment of your muscles. You may feel some discomfort at first – especially if you have any miss-alignments in your body. It will take time to build up the muscles in your feet that have not been utilized for so long, so make sure you listen to your body. Break into the shoes slowly and keep your old pair on hand for the first few weeks until your body full adjusts.

stylereads Who doesn’t love fashion? Perfecting that certain “look” is what it’s all about – whether that’s put-together career wear, free-spirited funky, carefree and casual or cool retro, fashion is fabulous! And when it comes to those tips and tricks for creating your look or just sprucing up your wardrobe, your Library has got you covered! Here are some of our favorites:
The Little Back Book of Style and The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own – Nina Garcia Some of us have no fashion gene. None. Frankly (and I can hear my sister cringe all the way from Atlanta), I wouldn’t know Givenchy from Gap. For those of us who are lost in the world of fashion, Elle Fashion Director Nina Garcia offers us a lifeline. The Little Black Book gets you started understanding style, and The One Hundred tells you how to make it happen. Every woman can have style and learn to express herself through fashion!
The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men – Janie Bryant, with Monica Corcoran Harel Mad Men. Seriously. Has anyone been more successful in the world of retro fashion? If you want that sleek Grace Kelly style, the glam Marilyn Monroe look, or you prefer to be the girl next door in bobby socks and sweater sets, this is absolutely your go-to book. There is a wealth of advice here on dressing well – whether your style is vintage, modern, or Bohemian. Bring back that mid-century glamour!
Tim Gunn: a Guide to Quality, Taste & Style – Tim Gunn with Kate Maloney Tim Gunn is the voice of reason on Project Runway, and his style guide is the voice of reason when it comes to creating your personal style, how to shop in all kinds of stores, how to understand fitting clothes and finding your perfect fit, and how to dress to make an impression for any occasion. Tim is fabulous, and this is the essential guide for how to “make it work”!
Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You – Simon Doonan Simon Doonan is the Creative Ambassador-At-Large for New York’s Barney’s. He decries the lack of diversity and experimentation in current fashion, and especially the trend of what he calls “porno-chic”. His guide to style is irreverent, funny, revealing… it’s a combination of memoir, cultural commentary, and sometimes flat-out reckless fashion advice. If you want a truly unique style - socialite, gypsy, or existentialist – and you follow Simon and “Say NO to HO!”, then this book is for you!

What every smart mcmurray girl should know about the law
The law of
fashion.
The fashion industry is a multi-billion dollar global enterprise, comprised of designers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and of course, the ultimate consumers. Depending on the locale chosen for the manufacturing, distribution and sale of their products, the players in the fashion world encounter an array of business and legal issues, often on an international level. Such legal matters range from labour and employment issues, franchising, customs and international trade regulations, domestic and international tax planning, anticounterfeiting and all forms of intellectual property (“IP”) rights protection and management.
reallifelaw. The French fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent, was precluded from manufacturing and selling shoes with red-bottomed soles, unless of course the shoe itself was red – a significant victory for Christian Louboutin. Fashion houses face unique challenges specific to their industry and should always stay vigilant in implementing IP mechanisms to ensure competitive protection of their goods and services and their bottom-line.
IP law is a specialized area of law aiming to protect “intellectual” rights that are intangible, usually arising out of some form of human creativity – musical, literary and artistic work; discoveries and inventions; words, phrases, symbols and designs. Common types of IP rights include copyright, trademarks, patents and industrial design rights. Each of these rights are unique so it is crucial that businesses understand the nature and scope of IP rights in determining how to best protect their competitive interests and for what duration of time.
Trademark rights protect words, designs, colours, shapes, or a combination of these and are used by businesses to distinguish their product or service from competitors.
Legal counsel for high profile fashion moguls such as Louis Vuitton (“LV”), Hermès and Christian Louboutin are kept busy protecting their clients’ trademarked brands against counterfeit goods. A simple internet search will result in numerous websites purporting to sell the Toile Monogram handbags, Birkins and redbottomed soled shoes at extremely low prices. Last year the US International Trade Commission ruled in favour of LV in a counterfeiting lawsuit involving two corporations; though the amount of the award was deemed “significant” by LV’s IP Director, the actual figure was not disclosed. Likewise, Hermès was awarded $100 Million in damages against 34 websites found guilty for trademark infringement and counterfeiting by selling fake luxury goods. In both cases internet service providers, merchant account providers and third-party search engines were directed to immediately cease providing services to the defendants or links to their sites. As for Christian Louboutin, a New York Court upheld their trademark protection for red-soled shoes, except when the shoe itself is red. The result?
Photo © JM Photography
Once a trademark is validly registered it provides the owner with the exclusive right to use the trademark in a specific geographical area. Should any person or company infringe on this right by unlawfully using the trademark the owner may commence a lawsuit citing “confusion” in the marketplace, misrepresentation or blatant counterfeit. Determining whether a trademark has been infringed is not always straightforward and typically results in litigation.

LANA'S Inspirations: Strong women have always surrounded me. My mother, Elizabeth and my late kokum, Marion have played a major role in guiding me to be the person I am today. They have both taught me the importance of family and kindness toward others. My father, Wayne has also been very influential by showing me that you must always work hard to get the things you want in life, and you should never expect anything for free. My siblings Whitney, Sage, Kelly and Tyler have given me the desire to be the best role model I could possibly be. If it weren’t for them, I would never have returned to school at age 25, after dropping out when I was 16. My husband Shawn has become my greatest support, my biggest fan and he has shown me the importance of teamwork. In our lives, our team is number one, and it’s communication that will keep us number one! More recently, my greatest inspiration has become my daughter Addison. She has become my motivation to make changes in my life, get healthier and focus on being a better me. How is success displayed in your life? To me success is more than having “stuff”. To me, success is about feeling happy and content. For me my greatest success is my family. I look at my husband and daughter and we have been blessed with all that we could ever need, but most of all we have love and we have each other. How did you choose your career path? Growing up in Fort McMurray, I couldn’t wait to leave this town. As I got older, I started to appreciate the city more and more. I knew that I wanted to work for Syncrude because it was where my dad worked and had enjoyed and achieved a successful career. I wanted that too! I was hired by the company right out of college, and have had several opportunities over the years, including Public Relations Representative and Aboriginal Community Investment Coordinator, but it’s this role that I have enjoyed the most. I work closely with the people of the region and help build and strengthen relationships on behalf of Syncrude. My job is sometimes challenging, but I get so much fulfillment in the work that I do. I feel very lucky to have a career that I love, and a job that I look forward to each day.
Stakeholder Relations Advisor for Syncrude Canada Ltd.
How do you give back to the community? A community is what you make it. My parents always ensured that as children we volunteered in the community to contribute to this wonderful city that offered us so much. I've been involved as a volunteer for initiatives such as the annual Food Bank Drive, Santa’s Anonymous, National Aboriginal Day planning committee, Regional Aboriginal Recognition Awards, and a director on the United Way Fort McMurray board. I have also been very involved in Girls Inc of Northern Alberta for over ten years. I started as a director, and currently I am on my second term as president. This organization is very near and dear to me, and I strongly believe in their mandate of encouraging girls to be “Strong, smart and bold”!
HEATHER'S Inspirations: My Parents, Family, Friends and every life experience – good or bad have been a huge inspiration in my life. Without every single one of these people and experiences, I would not be the person I am today. The biggest inspiration I have, though, is myself. Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself. Everyday I aim to be a better person then I was yesterday. No one else is going to be able to do that for me, it’s something I need to do all on my own. My family and friends are my support system, they help me back up and give me strength to carry on when things get hard! How is success displayed in your life? To me, the only measure of success is the amount of joy we are feeling! As long as I am happy and healthy, I am successful! Everything else is just a bonus! How did you choose your career path? I chose Real Estate because I grew up in a self-employed family and wanted to follow in those footsteps. There is nothing wrong with a regular 9-5 job; I just couldn’t picture myself doing that for the rest of my life. I stay in Real Estate because I enjoy helping people make what will be one of the biggest purchases of their lives. It isn’t just about buying or selling a ‘house’, its where you will make life memories or where your most precious memories were made! It can be an emotional process, and not just a business transaction. I can relate to that and I love to be the one to help other people through it! How do you give back to the community? Giving back to the community is very important to me because I was born and raised here in Fort McMurray. I believe that even the smallest things can make the world of a difference, whether that’s helping someone carry something to their car, holding a door open for someone, or volunteering your time. I’ve volunteered my time to community events, donated to local charities and also held a Christmas Gift Wrap for the Food Bank, where we raised $1735.00 and collected 500 pounds of food! The team including myself at Coldwell Banker also hosts an annual Community Bash where we raise money for Kidsport, and it has become a huge success! I definitely look forward to many more to come! I am at home with my 18 month old son right now, but I work in events, so I love seeing what’s going on in the community. Being part of the Social Club makes sure that every now and then I put on some heels, go out, and do a little socializing…no matter how busy life gets! It’s also a great chance to meet new people, and re-connect with those I’ve met at past events. I love how every event is different. I’m always eager to hear what the next one will be!
