s if guided by one of those “you are here maps, tracking your adventure is as simple as knowing where you’d like to be. Perhaps it was the anticipation of a riverside horseback trek into the jungle or the uncovering of hidden Maya Ruins while hanging with howler monkeys that has prompted your decision to come to Belize. Whatever your motivation was, rest assured that you have made the right choice.
From the stalactites found in the depths of the blue hole to the striking ancient Maya Ruins that tower over the jungle’s canopy, Belize boasts a wide range of life changing adventures, suitable for all ages. How high you climb, or how deep you dive, is all up to you. If the lazy, laid-back feel of island life suits you better, the many Cayes of Belize will cradle you in tranquility. More of a thrill seeker? Then waterfall rappelling in the jungle or swimming with sharks might be your thing. More than a vacation destination, Belize is a place of discovery. Ignite your sense of wonder. The purpose and meaning of new experiences are found here. Soak up the crystal clear waters, palm fringed beaches, lush jungles, delectable cuisine and an array of cultural nuances. It is all enough to engulf any traveler in the blissful state of a tropical escape.
ABOUT THE COVER S E R G E A N T ’ S C AY E Belize is blessed with a bounty of natural beauty. Among those are an impressive collection of offshore islands that have long been the star attraction for visitors. Like some of the more well-known islands,
Sergeant’s Caye has a rich and epic story. Once a pristine white beached island, it boasted a large clubhouse, two smaller houses, three water tanks, a pier, dozens of coconut trees and even an adjacent islet called Paunch Caye. It was visited by Princess Margaret during her West Indies tour in 1958 and at one point was used as a quarantine station. According to a publication from the Pacific Science Board published in 1963 entitled “Atoll Research Bulletin”, Sergeant’s Caye was decimated by hurricane Hattie in 1961. What was left behind was a sand shoal in place of a once comfortable paradise getaway. One of the only examples of what Sergeant’s once looked like comes in the form of a 15c British Honduras Stamp from the year 1938. Today Sergeant’s Caye is more a sand bar than an island yet it is still a visual pleasure. The caye sits among a reef patch, with a shallow reef flat. The only evidence that it was once inhabited are the remains of a cement water tank that can be seen at low tide on the fringe of the sand bank. It really is a special gem amongst all the other beautiful treasures that Belize has to offer.

BELIZE A mystery to many WRITTEN BY: CLARA DOBSON
What makes the Jewel of the Caribbean unlike anywhere else...
D
espite growing interest in the recent past, Belize remains a mystery to many. When listening to friends tell tales of adventures in Belize, many respond with, Belize... Where is that? Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize is located on mainland Central America with the Caribbean Sea to the east. The country is nestled between Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south. To clear up any confusion, Belize is considered to be both Central America and The Caribbean - a beautiful fusion of the two. With fewer than 400,000 inhabitants living in just less than 9,000 square miles, Belize has the lowest population density in all of Central America. To put that into perspective, if we were to directly compare the size of Belize to the United States or the United Kingdom, for example, Belize is a little bigger than the state of New Jersey, and would fit almost exactly into the UK country of Wales. Despite its small size, Belize boasts some of the most incredible sight-seeing destinations in the world. Belize is home to the largest living barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and is famous for its mysterious Great Blue Hole, which is ranked as one of The 10 Most Amazing Places on Earth by The Discovery Channel. Inland, Belize is home to the world’s first and only Jaguar Preserve, an astounding number of ancient Maya sites, and the tallest waterfall in all of Central America – The 1000 Foot Falls.

This laid-back approach extends further, into food. Some of the best traditional Belizean food is slow-cooked and hard to resist. If you’re in the mood for fast food, the closest thing you’ll find comes fresh from the fryer at one of Belize’s many Chinese fried chicken stops. Every menu is unique. There are no international fast food chains here, not a single one. The majestic beauty of Belize’s Caribbean coast, combined with its many inland adventure opportunities, often inspire travelers to return. Repeat visitors are common, as the country is praised for its friendly locals and eye-opening exploration opportunities.
With countless cayes and many mountains to explore, for the modern paradise seeker, there is always another adventure to experience. With that said, if you’re here already, you may as well start planning your next visit! CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM

elize, home to the magnificent Great Blue Hole, accompanied by the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, makes it a sought after diver’s paradise. Type the words “What is Belize known for?” in any search engine and the first thing to pop up are images of pristine reef systems, exotic marine life and scores of references to the famous sink hole known as
The Great Blue Hole.
A national treasure, and Belize’s most famous dive site, the Great Blue Hole is located in the center of Lighthouse Reef some 62 miles from the mainland. This marine treasure measures approximately 984 feet wide and is 410 feet deep. It is considered the world’s largest natural formation of its kind and was thus named ‘The Great Blue Hole” by British diver and author Ned Middleton. Awed by the natural wonder, he reasoned that if Australia could have ‘The Great Barrier Reef ’ then Belize could have ‘The Great Blue Hole’. The name stuck, and after French explorer Jacques Cousteau featured The Great Blue Hole on a television series called “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” the reputation of this geographical wonder was solidified. Deemed a world heritage site by UNESCO, The Great Blue Hole has attracted avid scuba divers, the environmentally conscious, and many other travelers from all over the world to its depths. Even though studies have concluded it was a cave system that collapsed in the last ice age, The Great Blue Hole still retains a shroud of mystery. With stalactite formations that date back 153,000 years, one has to wonder about the secrets the caverns hold. CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM
17
From below,
the experience is somber and eerie. A brave descent, the sight of coral snug on the limestone shelving, a glimpse of silhouettes of reef sharks passing above as you slip under the cavern roofs makes the dive unforgettable. Diving the Blue Hole leaves you feeling small in comparison to the greatness of the sunken cave. As if you were a new age explorer on a mission to uncover the resting place of an ancient entity, it is a true adventure to swim within these iconic waters. While the opportunity to dive and snorkel in crystal-clear waters and observe marine life among impressive coral formations is unprecedented, there is an alternative way to witness the grandeur of the site.
From above,
the Great Blue Hole is mesmerizing. An aerial tour of the Barrier Reef and surrounding atolls presents a new perspective of the natural beauty with which Belize is blessed. Within the comfy confines of a Maya Island Air plane you can witness the way hues of turquoise suddenly turn into a perfect circle of deep navy blue. Where diving within the Blue Hole can make you feel small, flying above makes you feel even tinier. The tour is an hour long, enough time to experience the wonder of Belize’s treasure. A bird’s eye view of how stunning the staggering 410-foot drop in the middle of a shallow reef system should be a priority item on any adventurer’s bucket list.

booming tourism I market can mean paid vacations for life!
t’s no secret that Belize is one of the most unique destinations in Central America. Situated among six Spanish-speaking countries, it is the only country to have English as its official language. In fact, the cultural diversity is one of the country’s best-selling points, along with the small population – currently under 400,000. The fact that the population density is the lowest in the region but the population growth rate is steadily rising, means that land is abundant and opportunities are ready for the taking. With a steady increase in visitors to Belize, the real estate market has been experiencing a boom, which has resulted in Belize quickly transforming from a littleknown hideaway, into a chic vacation spot!

Infrastructure has also seen a push, with an increasing number of luxury resorts and residential developments arising. These developments are designed to double as nightly accommodations as well as permanent residences that can be entered into a time-share pool or made available on the rental market. House hunting in Belize is now just a matter of knowing what you want. You can opt to build your dream house, or you can shop around for a home with the help of one of many certified real estate agents available.
When it comes to lifestyle, living in Belize is a luxury within itself. Whether you are interested in scenic mountain ranges and lush tropical rainforests or prefer blue waters and salty coastal breezes, Belize has the best of both worlds. Presently, the most popular real estate developments are located in the seaside communities of San Pedro and Placencia. Still, more inland districts like Corozal to the North and Cayo to the West hold a charming allure for those looking to settle down or invest in Belize.
If you are still not convinced, here are the top three reasons why you should consider Belize when investing in your vacation home:
1
The Qualified Retirement Program: The QRP is an initiative that was created to facilitate those seeking to retire and live permanently in Belize. If you qualify, there are some enticing welcome benefits that candidates are entitled to through this program. A resident card is issued for multiple entries into the country without the hassle of a visa. Candidates can enjoy duty exemptions on personal and household effects that include aircraft, motor vehicles, and boats. Additionally, there are tax exemptions on incomes received outside of the country.
2
Low Property Tax: Tax percentages range between 1% and 12.5% of the assessed value, depending on the type of property and whether or not it is occupied.
3
There are no capital gain or estate taxes... You better Belize it!
If you’re feeling the excitement of opportunity, trust your instincts. Give Belize a shot. Investing here may be the best decision of your life! CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM

LAMANAI H
idden in the forest near Belize’s largest fresh water lagoon lies Lamanai, a monumental city of the distant past. Crafted by and credited to the great Maya civilization that once thrived here, this aweinspiring architectural wonder is an attractive destination for any thrillseeking modern explorer. Situated along the banks of one of Belize’s largest and most impressive river networks, this once great city is now buried in thick jungle. Though the ruins can be reached by road, they are best accessed by boat. The waters of the nearby New River wind from deep in the forests of Northern Belize and empty into the Corozal Bay to the East. Contrary to its contemporary name, this river is the very same ancient channel which provided food, transit and clean drinking water to the builders of Lamanai over 2000 years ago. the people then turned against their rulers, who could not uphold their promises to appease the gods. Lamanai’s proximity to fresh water for irrigation, allowed the population here to survive many years beyond those of neighboring cities. Today, the rains have returned and the fresh water near Lamanai is still good to drink. Many tour guides boast of drinking directly from the river... but watch out for crocodiles, because they too share the waters still.

The name Lamanai comes from the Mayan Lama’an’ain meaning submerged crocodile - an animal of great importance to the ancient Maya. Maya art and myth depict the earth as positioned on the back of a large swimming reptile, often seen as a crocodile. Furthermore, the famous Maya God, Itzamná, carries the symbol of the crocodile, and is associated with rain, sun, earth, fertility and abundance.
How to get to Lamanai From Belize City, head north by road for about an hour on the Philip Goldson Highway. Shortly before reaching Orange Walk Town, you'll cross a toll bridge and be required to pay $0.75 BZD, immediately following on the left you will come to the river crossing. Charter a boat or buy a seat from a local tour operator for an exhilarating trip up the river to find the ruin. By air you can fly from Placencia or San Pedro and arrange for a tour operator to pick you up from the Orange Walk Airport or for an aerial view book a helicopter tour and see the ruin from the sky. Pack: water, comfortable shoes, bug repellent, binoculars, camera – pack light so you can climb high! A light snack can be a life saver – however, most tours do provide lunch as a part of the package.
Because the Maya people depended on agriculture, this deity was of the highest importance. So high in fact, that the High Temple at Lamanai is said to be dedicated to this god of the rains. Towering 33 meters into the sky, the High Temple offers a breathtaking view of the New River Valley and Lagoon. High atop this man-made mountain, ancient priests would have prayed to the sky-dwelling gods for a plentiful harvest. Some Archaeologists suggest that the Maya civilization crumbled after a prolonged drought which affected their crops. Story has it,

fter nearly twenty years I’m still amazed by the sheer numbers of fish in Belize. Maybe it’s our small population and tiny geographical hold, or perhaps it’s that we are still one of Mother Nature’s best kept secrets. Whatever the reason, the fly fishing community has certainly done its part to sustain the abundant fish population. As in many other parts of the world, the fly fishing community in Belize is quite small and though it may sound somewhat cliché, everybody does know everybody. It’s refreshing, and even more gratifying, to know that a group of like-minded individuals can rally to change the way a whole country fishes.
24
These days, almost every plane to Belize holds more and more anglers from around the globe hoping to chase the saltwater fly fishing lifestyle. The ‘BIG YEAR’ for sport fishing in our beautiful country was 2009. After several years of lobbying by industry stakeholders, the Government of Belize passed the ‘catch and release law’ that now governs and protects one of our most valuable and sustainable treasures. Recognizing the economic tourism impact of fly fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon was one very key deciding factor. CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM
about colorful sun guards, Colombia vented back shirts, polarized Costa shades and Maui Jim's out on these waters. The philosophy is that the fish aren’t the only ones that need to be lured in. If fishing is your thing or a hobby you’re thinking of taking up, Belize is the place to be. So here we are, several years after the ‘catch and release law’ was passed, and the local fly fishing scene is stronger than ever. If you haven’t tried fly fishing, now is the time to come enjoy the waters of Belize. Wil Flack is a full time saltwater flyfishing guide. He owns and operates the Tres Pescados Fly Shop in San Pedro and the Belize Permit Club fly fishing lodge in Southern Belize. www.belizefly.com
Visitors are now required to purchase sport fishing licenses and the revenues collected by Coastal Zone Management Authority directly impact the protection and future of our fisheries. The annual Tres Pescador Slam, the only catch and release grand slam tournament in the region, is held in San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye in the month of August. Pack your gear and practice your cast! The fishing scene in San Pedro isn’t only about reels and anglers! Fashion statements are made with every strike of the line. It’s all

t is a point of patriotic pride for Belizeans to boast that the Belize Barrier Reef is the longest barrier reef system in the Western Hemisphere, and for good reason. At a time when coral reefs across the planet are being hit hard by a myriad of threats, Belize’s marine assets still boast of beauty and bounty. The continued state of health and wellness for Belize’s reef depends not only on safeguards and protections put in place by Belize’s policymakers, but also on individual choices. Belize’s highly diverse reef system includes more than 60 coral species. These coral inhabit approximately 180 miles of barrier reef, three offshore atolls, numerous patch reefs, and many complex mazes of faro reefs and fringing reefs. This living factory in turn provides food and shelter to more than 300 marine invertebrate species and more than 500 species of fish. This wide diversity of marine wildlife helped to earn Belize its World Heritage Site designation in 1996; one of less than 50 marine sites globally.

support to an indefinite suspension on all oil related activities in Belizean waters. This historic move highlights how eco-conscious Belizeans are. Drilling activities, and even surveying, has been scientifically proven to endanger and damage shallow coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangroves - all key components in the health and wellness of the Belize Barrier Reef as well as Belize’s economically important tourism and fishing industries. This legislative move has made Belize an international leader in coral reef protection efforts. This wealth of marine life is a major factor in Belize’s tourism industry, a crucial driver for the Belizean economy. Recent arrival surveys have revealed that approximately 60% of visitors rank marine destinations as the deciding factor in their travel plans. Not surprisingly then, one in four Belizeans is directly dependent on tourism-related livelihoods. But striking a balance between all those people and a healthy marine environment is an ongoing struggle in the region. Due to several long-standing issues that negatively impact life under the sea, nearly three quarters of all coral reefs in the Caribbean are considered threatened. Issues include pollution, over-fishing, and unsustainable coastal development such as mangrove clearing, to name a few. Scientists estimate that climate-related changes will exacerbate challenges to the reef by as much as 90% by 2030. As tropical storms rise in frequency and severity, coral are not reviving fast enough. Another phenomenon, called bleaching, occurs as a result of above-average seawater temperatures, and …left too long, the living organism dies. Check out the trailer of 'Chasing Coral' for a visualization of this. This slew of threats to the marine wildlife of Belize requires bold decisions to be made by Belizean policymakers. Belize has however made some important strides already. Full protection is in place for key reef grazers like parrotfish, and there is a complete ban on all forms of trawling. Furthermore, the country is currently transitioning from an open access fishery, to one that puts more stewardship in the hands of fisher folk. One of the most dramatic conservation developments came as recently as December 2017 when Belizean parliamentarians gave bipartisan and unanimous

Belize has also joined the ranks of just fewer than 200 global parties to sign into the Paris Agreement. The agreement, which was approved in December of 2015 by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is a collective attempt to limit rising temperatures resulting from greenhouse gas emissions. An International NGO, Blue Ventures, is also working with local fishing communities to educate and promote the capture and sale of Lionfish. This invasive species of fish was artificially introduced into the Caribbean and has upset the balance of the reef. By fishing and consuming this nutrient packed foreign fish, Belizeans can improve their own health while also improving the health of the Belize’s reef and economy. Additional protection measures advanced individually and collectively will continue to ensure that the outstanding value of Belize’s marine assets will remain intact. There are some communities that are already leading initiatives against single use plastics, straws and styrofoam. Maybe you’ve already heard of the notorious anti-straw slogan… “Don’t suck.” Belizeans and their policy makers are showing their commitment to the health, safety and preservation of coastal and marine ecosystems, and visitors can help too. For guests, learning and sharing knowledge of conservation efforts is a great help to the cause. For those that really want to get involved, there is a growing number of organizations in Belize that involve visitors in creating positive impacts for the reef. Everyone with a love for Belize’s natural wonders has a stake in the health and wellness of the reef. Support the coral – protect the reef.

Belize: the perfect place to get introduced to tropical bird life. CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM
W
ith an estimated 600 bird species and six internationally recognized Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), Belize is one of Central America’s premier birding destinations. With over 100 protected areas in the country, critical habitats remain intact for resident and migratory species. As the New Year unfolds, the most colourful (and noisy) feeding frenzy goes on full display as Scarlet Macaws gather in Southern Belize. The Scarlet Macaw is one of the largest parrots in the world, with electric crimson plumage to contrast its yellow and blue tail feathers. These range-restricted birds migrate from the Chiquibul Forest to their seasonal feeding grounds of Southern Belize, with the unequivocal rrrahk raucously echoing above as they arrive November through March, in search of the blooming ‘Polewood’ and ‘Annato’. Coincidentally, these lovebirds form monogamous life-long bonds and are most plentifully seen around Valentine’s Day! Best known as the world’s first jaguar preserve, The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a reservoir of biodiversity boasting 350 species of birds, including the Scarlet Macaw. Nearby, the small Mayan community of Red Bank Village is also considered a Scarlet Macaw and birding haven with an estimated 200 Scarlet Macaws found in the wild. Seeing these locally endangered feathered kaleidoscopes flying freely is an unparalleled birding experience. Embark on your birding adventure with a Belize Audubon trained guide to maximize the quality of your experience. Grab your binoculars and head South to scan the treetops in search of Belize’s brightest feathered friends! For more information, visit belizeaudubon.org

A DAY IN SAN IGNACIO
WRITTEN BY: MISAEL CANTO - DRAG ADVENTURES
S
o you’re in San Ignacio for the day and you’re wondering what to do... Why not take a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre. Famed for its geological beauty and crystalline stalagmites and stalactites, this cave also doubles as a natural museum, complete with ancient Maya artifacts - plus a sacred burial space! Did you wake up a little late? No problem... San Ignacio offers a plethora of activities and attractions, right in town. A short stroll uphill from the bustling Burns Avenue, one can find AJAW Chocolate, a small workshop where you’ll meet “cacao man” Adrian Choco. Adrian invites visitors on a short but sweet journey as he teaches them to make chocolate from scratch.
Exploring San Ignacio and the surrounding areas. Caves, ruins, local chocolate and more! teaches guests how vital our lizard buddies are to the ecological balance of their river habitat. Continuing to the top of the hill, hikers (or riders) will arrive at the archaeological site, Cahal Pech, meaning Place of The Ticks. This famous Maya site is home to the earliest carved stele (inscribed stone slab) ever recovered in Belize. The stele depicts a Maya ruler emerging from the jaws of a great monster believed to be a jaguar. From its position high atop the hillside, the majestic temples of Cahal Pech still look out over the valley where the great Macal and Mopan Rivers join to become the Belize River.
Further uphill, visitors can sign up for a highly informative and educational exhibit at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. The exhibit takes a look at the once endangered Green Iguana, and
By the end of the day, you’re surely ready to eat. Stop by Simply Delicious Restaurant on the principal highway in San Ignacio. Taste their Pasta Maya and let them educate you on Chaya, a locally grown leafy green veggie that is chock full of nutrients!

Another way to give to yourself is to treat yourself at home. Turn your bathroom into the spa of your dreams with the use of local Belizean-made beauty products.

Home remedies have been passed down through generations, slowly evolving into the beauty treatments practiced today. A number of local entrepreneurs have capitalized on these remedies and offer professional-grade beauty products made with locally sourced organic ingredients. These locally-crafted exfoliating scrubs are sure to help in washing away the old to make way for the new.

MAHOGANY BAY VILLAGE WRITTEN BY: LAURA BALIS
Introducing the new kid on the block, Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club – Belize’s newest resort community! 36
C
an you believe that one of the most dynamic new resort developments in the Caribbean is rooted right here in Belize? Just south of San Pedro Town lies the resort community of Mahogany Bay Village, a sprawling 60+ acre development that includes a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel, a Coastal Living Community of private residences, and a bustling retail center. And perhaps most exciting of all is Mahogany Bay’s mile of secluded white sand beach on the pristine west side of Ambergris Caye! Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club was officially adopted into Hilton’s Curio Collection on opening day, December 6, 2017. This fresh and unique resort is a welldesigned dream come true, consisting of 205 tropical cottages and villas all built with sustainably-harvested Belizean hardwoods, each with lofty ceilings and heirloomquality furnishings made in Belize. The Bay Club at Mahogany Bay Resort boasts CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM
a massive Miami-style pool with bar and private cabanas offering bottle service and spa treatments. Overlooking the pool is the majestic Great House, a grand British colonial gem that claims the title to largest wooden structure in all of Belize. The building was expertly crafted to offer a harmonious blend of colonial style woodwork with a touch of contemporary opulence. Tucked away on the third floor is Gadfly’s, a swanky and exclusive island social club. Its craft cocktail lounge offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding waters, not to mention an exquisite vantage point of The Bay Club by night! Mahogany Bay Homes is the village’s residential community, home to both snowbirds and year-round occupants. Mahogany Bay’s partnership with prominent international brand, Coastal Living, has inspired the recent growth of this lifestyle neighborhood. Mahogany Bay Homes encompasses over 40 sprawling private residences, outfitted to the nines with state-of-the-art appliances, private pools, and even golf cart garages! Here residents enjoy a safe and quiet seaside community, while sharing access to all the same amenities and services as Hilton resort guests. Mahogany Bay Townlet describes the village retail center, and provides the island a social outlet for visitors to enjoy a thoughtfully-curated collection of boutique shops, artisanal drinking and dining, spa and wellness services, with many more exciting businesses on the way. The Townlet is open daily to the public, where guests can peruse handcrafted Belizean furniture and gifts at Road to Cayo, enjoy a mani-pedi at Polish Hair & Nails, savor the island’s freshest and most authentic Japanese sushi at JYOTO, grab a frozen frappe at Rum+Bean, and even stock up on 100% Belizean craft chocolate at Mahogany Chocolate. For the adventure-seeker, learn to dive with resident dive operator, Scuba School Belize, or head to the sand flats for a day of fly fishing with Blue Bonefish. As if this ambitious development’s multiple facets weren’t impressive enough, perhaps its real claim to fame is its boat-access-only Mahogany Bay Beach Club on the island’s undeveloped sunset shore. The Beach Club is truly a tropical paradise . . . imagine . . . a white sandy cove with shallow turquoise water as far as the eye can see, dotted with overwater beds and hammocks calling for a day of epic relaxation. Residents and resort guests can experience an off-the-grid island escape while enjoying culinary delights and frozen drinks served up with a warm Belizean smile. CARIBBEANLIFESTYLE.COM
With so much to offer, Mahogany Bay Village is well-poised for success. New residents and retail tenants are popping up through the village like coconut palms after rainy season. We highly recommend a visit to Mahogany Bay Village on your next trip to La Isla Bonita! 37
