JUSTICE FOR TINA — Tina Humlick’s friends and family were in attendance at El Dorado Superior Court as Michael Thompson pleaded guilty to her murder. The group wore T-shirts they had made with a picture of Humlick and the phrase “Justice for Tina.” Many said they intend to return for Thompson’s sentencing in March to read victim impact statements.

El Dorado County sheriff ’s deputies arrested Aaron McLam Friday on suspicion of stabbing a victim at PJ’s Roadhouse in Placerville.

McLam, 43, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and DUI, and is being held in the El Dorado County Jail on $65,500 bail. Sheriff ’s deputies responded to the incident around 8:30 p.m. and found a 51-year-old suffering from stab wounds, according to Sgt. Kyle Parker.

Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Norling Monastery closed out their return visit to Placerville’s Federated Church by holding a consecration and mandala dissolution ceremony Saturday. The same group of Tibetan monks visited the area last year as part of their tour away from the South India monastery where they live in exile. Tibetan monks have been visiting Placerville as guests of the Placerville Friends of Tibet since 2003.

A Stockton man suspected of burglarizing homes in El Dorado Hills’ Blackstone community pleaded not guilty to charges against him during his arraignment Jan. 18.

Marcus Anthony Wright, 63, will be held without bail, as ordered

by Judge Thomas A. Smith in El Dorado County Superior Court Department 1. Smith deemed the action “necessary for the protection of the public and victims.

“These are very serious charges that carry multiple counts (and) 25 years to life,” Smith added.

resident, was found nearby and taken into custody. He also suffered injuries and was hospitalized before being booked into jail Monday.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Parker on Tuesday told the Mountain Democrat the victim was still being treated in the hospital and their condition is unknown.

EDSO did not provide further details due to an ongoing investigation.

Wright is charged with four felony counts of first-degree residential burglary, one count of prowling and one count of possession of burglary tools, offenses that reportedly took place between October and November 2023, according to the criminal complaint filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.

Hideo “Ike” Ikenoyama Feb. 10, 1930 – Dec 30, 2023

Hideo “Ike” Ikenoyama, passed away peacefully at home in Placerville on December 30, 2023, at the age of 93.

He is survived by a loving wife of 69 years, Helen; daughter Joyce (Mike) Joy; son James (Lisa) Ikenoyama; 4 grandchildren: Hana (Max) Mizel; Akio (Anju) Joy; Kobi Ikenoyama; Niko Ikenoyama; and brother George (Kimiko) Ikenoyama.

A long-time resident of Sacramento who loved fishing, camping, and hosting friends and family. He made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of; from lending a helping hand to making sure your cup was always full. His humble kindness always made one feel special and put a smile on everyone’s face. He will be sadly missed and always hold a special place in so many hearts.

Interned at Tule Lake and Topaz Lake Internment Camps during World War II and a decorated Korean War Veteran with a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

We welcome you to celebrate his life with us at Sacramento Buddhist Church, 2401 Riverside Blvd on Sunday, February 4 at 2:00 pm.

Barbara Smith

Oct. 12, 1943 – Jan. 5, 2024

Barbara “Barb” Smith passed away at her home in El Dorado Hills at the age of 80. She was born in Geneva, Illinois, grew up in the suburbs West of Chicago and moved to Northern California in 1965. In 1978 Barbara moved to the Placerville area with her family. Barbara worked at the Post Office in Pollock Pines, Folsom, and El Dorado Hills.

Barbara is survived by her children Chuck, Linda, and Bill, and her daughters-in-law Alisa and Joanne.

She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Samantha, Marcus, Emma, Julia, Caroline, Skyler, Jonah, and her great-grandchildren Suzy and Robby.

Barb is also survived by her sister and best friend Kathy (Bruce) McAllister, and their brothers Don, David, Richard, and Larry Bruce. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Smith, father Everett Bruce, mother Helen Bruce, her bestie Annetta Foster, and her furry companion Tuffy.

A graveside interment will be at Westwood Hills Memorial Park in Placerville on January 26th at 1 p.m. Chapel of the Pines in Placerville is assisting the family with arrangements and information can be found on the website. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate in Barbara’s name to your favorite animal charity.

Driver who struck tree extricated by fire crews Georgetown Fire Department News release

A Georgetown man was pinned inside his SUV after hitting a tree along Wentworth Springs Road Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The driver and sole occupant of the GMC Yukon XL was 46-year-old Aaron Kohlhagen, according to information from the Placerville office of the California Highway Patrol. Firefighter/ paramedics worked for almost 40 minutes to extricate Kohlhagen before he was prepared for transport

to Sutter Roseville Medical Center by air ambulance.

Georgetown Fire Chief Glenn Brown shared an update Jan. 18 that the driver, who suffered a severe injury to his leg, is in stable condition.

The crash took place just after 4 p.m. on a stretch of Wentworth near Lower Balderston Road east of Georgetown. The CHP investigation found Kohlhagen was traveling west when his vehicle left Wentworth and struck a tree north of the roadway. CHP officials note the cause of the collision is under

investigation.

Assisting Georgetown firefighters in the extrication were personnel from the Garden Valley and El Dorado County fire protection districts.

Responding units include Georgetown Fire Chief 7100, Medic 61, Engine 361, Garden Valley Fire Squad 51 and El Dorado County Fire Engine 72.

Brown said, “It was a great team effort from multiple agencies working together, utilizing a variety of extrication tools to safely get the patient out of the vehicle without any further

Help sort litter pulled from Lake Tahoe’s depths Katelyn Welsh

Tahoe Daily Tribune Are you free on Friday, Jan. 26? Clean Up the Lake is looking for volunteers to help sort litter they’ve collected from dives around Lake Tahoe.

The sort takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Organizers will provide the sorting location after sign up.

Clean Up the Lake is an organization that regularly conducts dives to collect trash in Lake Tahoe and other Sierra lakes. Since 2018 the nonprofit has collected more than 61,000 pounds of litter.

Tahoe Monitoring California project.

The dives targets 10 litter hot spots on the California side of the lake, identified during a 72-mile clean up in 2022.

The project tracks how litter loads have changed at those sites.

Divers also keep an eye out for aquatic invasive species. They’ve partnered with Boatworks Mall, Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, the Martis Fund, Tahoe Blue Vodka and others to provide this monitoring.

But diving for trash is just the first step.

Volunteers can help out above the surface with sorting and categorizing the trash collected.

Robber gets minimum sentence despite DA’s objection Odin Rasco Staff writer

A convicted burglar facing 15 years for a Placerville robbery was sentenced to just two years in state prison, despite objections from prosecutors.

On June 14, 2023, Andrea Navone entered a Placerville hardware store and began stealing items; when the store owner confronted her, Navone used force in an effort to leave the scene, according to an El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office press release. Navone had previously been sentenced

for a residential burglary, a charge that falls under California’s Three Strikes law, and was on parole at the time of the robbery.

Navone was originally sentenced for the hardware store robbery July 13, 2023, after a jury convicted her of the crime. Judge Michael McLaughlin opted to use his legal discretion, according the to DA’s Office release, dismissing sentencing enhancements that would have doubled the minimum sentence and added an additional five years. McLaughlin also sentenced Navone to probation; because the robbery was conducted while she was on parole for

residential burglary she was legally ineligible for probation, prosecutors say.

The trial attorney for the DA’s Office assigned to the Navone robbery, Casey Mandrell, filed a writ of mandate in an appeal court, requesting McLaughlin’s sentence be reversed as it was not allowed by law. The 3rd District Court of Appeal ruled Navone was to be re-sentenced in accordance with the law in November 2023. Returning to the case on Jan. 8, McLaughlin sentenced Navone to the shortest sentence possible — two years in state prison

Rollercoaster weather shows why better infrastructure is needed

A

s California’s traditional season for rain and snow began last fall, meteorologists and hydrologists predicted that the state would probably experience a second year of heavy precipitation.

Letters to the Editor Funding rules a farce EDITOR: am a hospice nurse who serves El Dorado County. My husband is generally a teacher, but has been a stay-at-home father without income since our 4-year-old was born (due to the cost of childcare).

Last summer we attempted to enroll our 4-yearold in public preschool in Placerville. We were informed that only one middle-class child could be enrolled for every nine underserved and all spots were currently filled. I understand the need for kids who are starting off in a tough spot needing help, so despite being disappointed I left. I looked into private preschool but the cost was at least $2,000 a month — more than we can afford.

We had been doing our best to socialize her and teach her at home until I saw a banner over Placerville advertising openings for preschool.

I returned to the Office of Education and asked the same person if my child could come off the waiting list and take one of the empty seats advertised. I was told that even though there were open slots, my child could not have one as they had to remain open for low-income children or it would throw off their funding ratio.

I asked if that meant priority was being given to an empty seat over my child. They did not answer this question directly, which inadvertently answered the question. Yes: my child was less important than an empty seat.

I asked if I could put her in and withdraw her if a student in need required the spot. My thought was any preschool was better than none and then she wouldn’t take a spot away from anyone. I was told no, that again it would throw off their funding.

I was then offered a place in El Dorado Hills, where our income would qualify us as poor. I asked if she would help their funding ratio there and was told yes.

I noted it was interesting that there was a spot

for her when it was convenient for their funding.

I believe in equity. Those who need more support should have more support. I refuse to believe that empty seats instead of middle-class children in those seats benefit anyone. It certainly doesn’t benefit the children of any socioeconomic tier.

As a taxpayer of this county I am more than irritated that our public preschool can’t accommodate my child based on my rather unexciting middle-class income.

I feel like I have failed my child.

I was able to attend preschool with two middleclass parents. What has changed and why is my little one the person who shoulders the burden?

Anyway, I said I would try for a few months. I loved it and so did they. We would finish by noon and walk all over town.

My son, John, started junior college at 14 and went on to get his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement. My daughter did not go to college but she got a great job with the state of Clifornia and gets promoted approximately every six months.

Independent contracting offers flexibility to set your own schedule and work on your own terms. It allows freedom and flexibility that many prefer and many others need ... circumstances. It lowers barriers to entering the workforce for those who would otherwise have difficulty such as parents of infants or young children, seniors and individuals with disabilities. Independent work arrangements also provide a pathway to supplemental earnings for people who have multiple income sources.

Forcing all of these workers into solely traditional employment would take away their ability to earn a living in the manner that works best for them and their families.

Beyond the far-reaching harms to workers, Biden’s new labor rule will also threaten countless businesses and harm the consumers who depend on their products and services. Small businesses, in particular, often work with a variety of independent contractors to perform discrete tasks that are not well-suited or economically compatible with an employeremployee relationship. We must oppose the ongoing attacks on worker freedom and ensure that worker preferences and autonomy are accounted for in all policy decisions.

More than ever, we must support the right of enterprising Americans to pursue their calling as they see fit.

Though Thompson was scheduled to face sentencing Friday, but his fate was postponed due to information missing from probation regarding time served; his sentencing was rescheduled for March 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Thompson faces a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison for killing Humlick, and an additional year to be added to the minimum term for the special allegation for using a deadly weapon — a KA-BAR 1211 7-inch knife.

Exiting the courthouse, some of Humlick’s friends discussed the loss they were still reeling from.

Union Mine Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks notched two more league wins over the Bradshaw Christian Pride and Galt Warriors. The Diamondbacks took the win Tuesday, Jan. 16, in a 76-70 nail biter over Bradshaw Christian as senior guard Nate Sweet led the way with 34 points. Friday, Jan. 19, against Galt was a different story, as the Diamondbacks beat the Warriors 83-39, to improve their overall record to 21-2 (5-0 in league) as they stay atop the Sierra Valley Conference. The Diamondbacks were scheduled to host Liberty Ranch Tuesday, Jan. 23, and Rosemont Friday, Jan. 26.

El Dorado Cougars: The Cougars secured two more league wins over the Liberty Ranch Hawks and Bradshaw Christian. In the win over the Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 16, the Cougars were propelled by senior guard duo Jeremy Kimber and Jayden Ferreira as they combined for 29 of the team’s points to

beat the Hawks 50-47. In the game against The Pride Friday, Jan. 19, it was more of the same for the Cougars as the senior duo combined for 44 points. Kimber led scoring with 23 and and Ferreira followed suit with 21 of his own on their way to a 60-53 win. The Cougars were slated to play at Rosemont Tuesday, Jan. 23, and Galt on Friday, Jan. 26, as they look to keep pace with Union Mine in league play.

The Cougars are 4-1 in league and second in the Sierra Valley Conference.

Oak Ridge Trojans: The Trojans went 0-2 with losses to the Del Oro Golden Eagles and Folsom Bulldogs. The Trojans fell to stellar guard play from both teams last week as they could not fight off 29 points from Del Oro guard Caden Pinnick, or the 27 points from Folsom guard Chase Rawlins. The Trojans fall to 13-8 overall and 1-3 in league, dropping them to fifth place in the Sierra Foothill League. The Trojans were scheduled to host Pleasant Valley Tuesday, Jan. 23, and then be on the road at

Whitney Friday, Jan. 26.

Ponderosa: The Bruins went 0-2 in league play last week as they lost close games to the West Park Panthers and the Lincoln Fighting Zebras. Senior guard Marco Moorman led the scoring for the Bruins against the Panthers on Tuesday, Jan 16; he ended that game with 20 points in their 51-49 loss. In Thursday night’s loss to the Fighting Zebras, it was senior wing Keenan Patterson who led the way with 21 points as the Bruins comeback fell just short, dropping another league game 58-50. The Bruins dropped to 1-3 and to fifth in the Foothill Valley League. The Bruins will play on the road at Nevada Union Wednesday, Jan. 24, and at Placer Friday, Jan. 26.

Rescue Fire personnel urge drivers to “turn around, don’t drown.”

into hazardous flood water,” states a Rescue Fire Department social media post. “The force and power of water can easily sweep away cars, trucks and even people.

It takes only 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult, 12 inches to carry away most cars and 2 feet to carry away SUVs and trucks.”

The reigning Rose (or a previous Rose) is invited to initiate the annual lighting of the Placerville Christmas tree downtown. The Roses would personally like to thank Mayor Michale Saragosa and Vice Mayor Jackie Neau for keeping an eye on the Roses this year. Also the Roses want to thank the city of Placerville staff who produced magic wands (glow sticks) as the countdown started and when the time was right we waved the magic wands and the tree lit up.

Who is the El Dorado Rose?

In 1976 the El Dorado County Fair Special Events Committee discussed the need for a program or event that would honor mature women.

Dottie Ingram came up with the idea of a contest to be held. Thus the El Dorado Rose program was introduced and is now sponsored by the El Dorado County Fair.

In spring 1980 the first annual El Dorado Rose Ball was held.

GROW FOR IT! Garden planning

W

hen I opened a social media page this morning, with a dusting of snow on the ground outside my window, this quote popped up from The Country Garden

by Josephine Nuese: “Anyone who thinks that gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year.

For gardening begins in January, begins with the dream.”

She, like me, I discovered, wrote for her local weekly paper, which makes her a kindred spirit.

Seed and gardening catalogs land in our mailboxes this time of year to inspire our garden planning and buying. We have to be careful to remember what Master Gardeners have learned in their excellent training. Be sure to choose the right plant for the right place.

Using this principle can save you heartache down the road. The right plant in the right place can minimize maintenance. Consider the shape of the plant and its mature size, think about its color and texture. Think about how the plant may add winter interest with its evergreen or bare branching properties.

Consider and research how it looks at other seasons of the year.

Tracking the sun

UCCE Master Gardener of El Dorado County hours in your garden space as it moves across at different times of the year can help with planning. You can start this month with noticing how little sun you may have on these short days of the year.

The sun will increase slowly until it reaches its zenith at Summer Solstice around June 21. To have a successful summer garden you need at least 6-8 hours of sun in the summer months.

We probably want diversification in our gardens (CA Master Gardeners Handbook Second Edition, page 224). Adding flowering plants to a garden can increase floral and nectar sources for beneficial insects that provide biological control of pest insects.

It’s popular to call this “companion planting” but many companion plantings are not scientifically proven.

When planning your vegetable garden, you want to make sure you rotate your crops. If

you planted tomatoes in one garden box one year you don’t want to plant tomatoes a second year. This also goes for cucurbits (melons and cucumbers).

Measuring the space you have available for your garden can be helpful in planning.

Making a sketch on graph paper or drawing paper filling in how much space a mature plant may take up may save you from having to physically move it later.

Some beautiful concept words to think about when planning a garden might include: Scale. Proportion.

Balance. Perspective.

Unity. Repetition.

Rhythm. Simplicity.

Harmony. Accent.

Dominance. Contrast.

I hope these words inspire you to dream your own dream of a garden. You may be planning a garden for the first time or for the 75th time. May it bring you joy through all the seasons of the year.

FOLSOM — As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, Sacramento locals have a rare opportunity to hear the first-hand account of Margot Goldberg, who survived the Holocaust as a young girl.

Goldberg, a 97-year-old resident of Palo Alto, lived through the horrors of Kristallnacht, when the Nazis stormed into her home, demolished furniture, shattered heirloom china and arrested her father, who was taken to a concentration camp. Miraculously her family arranged for her to join the kindertransport, the English initiative that saved 10,000 Jewish children from deportation to concentration camps. Goldberg’s father took her to the train station to say goodbye. She never saw him, her mother or most of the members of her family again.

The evening will be hosted by Cristina Mendonsa of News 93.1 KFBK and is presented by the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Folsom & El Dorado Hills and Chabad of Placer County. Goldberg will share her story of survival, with a question and answer session to follow.
