Former Mountain Democrat publisher Jim Webb dies at 79 Pat Lakey Staff writer

Jim Webb

Jim Webb, publisher of the Mountain Democrat for nearly 25 years during the 1980s and into the new millennium, has died. Webb, 79, died Monday, Feb. 3, at his home in El Dorado Hills. The publisher whose smile showed up at nearly every public function began serving at the helm of the newspaper Sept. 9, 1985 and would lead California’s oldest newspaper until he relinquished that honor July 31, 2009.

“He pushed hard at the newspaper, but also gave his time to the community he grew to love.” — Foy S. McNaughton, president and CEO of McNaughton Newspapers The McNaughton family who owns the Mountain Democrat and several other north state newspapers expressed grief at Webb’s passing “We hired Jim away from the Auburn Journal in the mid-‘80s — it took a couple attempts and a few years to convince him and (wife)

Barbara to make the move,” recalled Foy S. McNaughton, president and CEO of McNaughton Newspapers. “It was more than worth the effort,” McNaughton added. “Jim brought professionalism and that winning personality to the Mountain Democrat. He pushed hard at the newspaper, but also gave his

time to the community he grew to love.” The man who started out in the newspaper industry as a newsboy delivering newspapers, then climbed the ranks in the advertising sales department for decades at several different newspapers, always loved a good story. And if it had a punch line, even better. “I remember coming back from a boxing match at Arco years ago, when Jim had me laughing so hard I thought

James Francis Rogers

Christopher R. Kopf

James (Jim) Francis Rogers, 94, of Shingle Springs, Calif., passed away on Jan. 30, 2020, peacefully in his home. He joins his wife Dorothy Florence Smelser who passed nine years earlier. Jim was born in Roseburg, Ore. His father Frank Judson Rogers and mother Jessie Geneva Leverich had two more children, Jim’s older sister JeAnne Adel and younger brother Alan Gerald. Jim had a half-sister Marjorie Aileen Heffernan (nee Rogers Letson) in Canada who very recently passed Jan 1, 2020 in her 101st year. Jim served in the U.S. Navy in Panama during WWII. After the war, Jim met his wife Dorothy at his Uncle Jory’s packing company. Jim and Dorothy married on Aug. 1, 1947. Dorothy insisted that Jim pursue college on his GI Bill. Dorothy’s sister, Peggy and her husband Bob Phelan loaned $700 to Jim and Dorothy so they could purchase a 6’x12’ trailer home in Corvallis, Ore., so Jim could go to Oregon State University where Bob Phalen was already attending. Dorothy gave birth to her first three sons, Jim, Jeff and Jerry while Jim attended college. Jim and Dorothy came to Modesto, Calif., in 1952 after Jim finished college. Jim had received a job from U.S. Department of Agriculture. There they had four more children, JeAnne, Jay, Joel and Jon. Jim took a position of Director of Quality Control for California Canners and Growers. They moved to Concord, Calif., in 1965. In 1968 Jim, the eldest son, joined the Army and went to Vietnam. This was followed by Jeff joining the Navy and Jerry joining the Air Force to serve during the Vietnam War effort. Later they moved to Los Gatos, Calif. Jim retired from his job in October, 1983. Together they moved to Paradise, Calif., to retire in July 1984. In July 1985, Jim took a consulting job at a food processing company in Sacramento. The company moved them to Cameron Park where they rented a house close to their oldest son and his family. Jim served them for six years and then returned to retirement. When the house in Los Gatos sold they sought permanent residence. They found their new retirement home on an acre and moved on Thanksgiving Day, 1985, to their current home in Shingle Springs. Here they built a riding corral and purchased two horses and a pony. Their children and their children’s children spent many happy days riding the horses with them. Grandma turned to the yard and transposed the native landscape with many beautiful roses and trees. They had a beautiful vegetable garden over the years and added a hen house with little banty chickens. There was an abundance of fruit trees and berries to enjoy and places for the grandchildren to play. Jim’s love for model airplanes continued throughout his life. He was a founding father of El Dorado Flyers where he served as president and continued to build and fly radio controlled planes through his retirement until the age of 90 when his eyesight would not allow him to continue. He loved fly fishing and sailing. He built his own sailboat and enjoyed sailing with his sons and family. He is survived by his seven children; Jim, Jeff, Jerry, JeAnne, Jay, Joel and Jon as well as 23 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. His direct cremation interment at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery in Rescue, Calif., will be followed by a memorial and reception at his home in Shingle Springs for family and friends this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Christopher R. Kopf, 76, of Camino, Calif., tragically died of a heart attack just before the holidays on Nov. 20, 2019. The oldest of three sons, Chris was born March 16, 1943, to Robert and Jean Kopf in Sacramento, Calif. He graduated from the the United States Air Force Academy in 1966 and served 20 years in the USAF before retiring as captain. Chris married Florence A. Marquez in 1967 and had three kids before becoming a widower and single father in 1976. A huge sports fan and athlete, Chris loved to stay active throughout his life. He competed in basketball and tennis in high school and gymnastics for the United States Air Force Academy. He loved to play tennis and in the past few years enjoyed volunteering as an assistant coach at El Dorado High School. After retirement and many years in Albuquerque, N.M., Chris rekindled a romance with his longtime significant other, Linda Sue Horn. He returned to his home state of California, where he loved and lived with her these past 18 years. Chris was a very generous, giving man who had a huge heart. He enjoyed his family and had a great, quirky sense of wit and humor. Chris is survived by his significant other Linda Sue Horn, his brother Jonathan (Buzz) Kopf and sister-in-law Sheila Kopf; brother-in-law James Kopf; daughter Kimberli Kopf; son Eron Kopf; wife Tonya Kopf; and stepdaughters Rhonnie Rego and Danni Hinshaw. Chris had five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Kopf, his parents Robert and Jean Kopf, his youngest brother Cameron Kopf and eldest daughter Cindy Olguin. On March 15 at 1 p.m. there will be a celebration of life gathering for family and friends to remember Chris at his childhood home in Sacramento. For information or to RSVP, please email tkopf819@ gmail.com. He will have full Military Honors Services on March 16, 2020, at 10:40 a.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, Calif.Â

The SnowGlobe Music Festival that takes place in South Lake Tahoe each year at the end of December is taking flak from not only neighbors but the Center for Environmental Health.

Environmental Health files lawsuit against Tahoe music festival Laney Griffo Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The SnowGlobe Music Festival has been a point of contention for many in South Lake Tahoe. Some who live in the neighborhood near the event complain about sound

and the city has made efforts to police its policy and monitor decibels. One issue that’s gone relatively under the radar with SnowGlobe is air quality concerns. After the 2018 festival, the Center for Environmental Health initiated litigation against SnowGlobe after finding there was too much benzene in the air. “Many music festivals use a variety of diesel powered items including the generators and buses and trucks,” CEH senior scientist Caroline Cox said. “We were concerned about the ■

No raise for supervisors ■ Supervisors’ last pay

increase was in 2007 Dylan Svoboda Staff writer

El Dorado County’s Board of Supervisors declined to explore giving themselves a raise at their Feb. 4 meeting. County staff recommended the board consider a potential pay boost after a 2019 study found that board member salaries are 9.42 percent below the market median. The job isn’t about the money, District 3 Supervisor Brian Veerkamp said, despite what at times can be a demanding perch. “I think all of us do this for different

reasons,” Veerkamp said. “It’s no secret that I didn’t take pay for the first four years. You find out there’s a lot to it. “But we’re policymakers … To me, the employees and administrators are the important part. And for us, we’re there to support them. I know it takes a lot of time. But if we focus more on policy and make sure our department heads are doing what they’re supposed to do then there wouldn’t be a whole lot coming to us.” While apprehensive about the idea of granting a personal salary increase at this time, a pay raise for the board may become necessary in the coming years as staff salaries continue to rise, according to District 1 Supervisor John Hidahl. ■

Guest column

Off-balance accusations

L

arry Weitzman is enormously complimentary of me. He calls me a big-time California politician with good educational and professional creds. And he opines that a mere 30 days into my brief time with El Dorado County I was powerful ROGER NIELLO enough to have derailed a policy train that was solidly on a three-year-long track and just pulling into its completion station. So here’s a little history. When I started my limited-term position as interim director of the Community Development Agency in November 2016 the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and staff had spent more than three years on a major update of the county’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and Traffic Impact Mitigation (TIM) fee program. There had already been close to a dozen meetings on this issue during which staff continually updated the board on its progress and the board made incremental decisions along the way and provided ongoing direction to staff. The meeting where the board would make its final decision on the TIM fee schedule was on the books prior to my becoming interim director. Today, more than three years later, I do not recall all details. I do recall that I was briefed on the matters and it was clear to me that staff ’s work had been fully competent and very thorough. It also was clear to me that the board, after diligently studying the issue for the prior three years, was ready for its final decision at that December board meeting. To think that I, after literally days on the job, could have derailed more than three years of very good staff work and forced the board to reverse course and deny the changes before them is ludicrous. Even if I could have, though, there was no reason to. Contrary to Mr. Weitzman’s clumsy, and as I have observed from his columns, knee-jerk acerbic criticisms, the staff work was excellent. And I concluded the board’s apparent support of the changes was well-reasoned and reasonable. In fact, the reduction in TIM fees and the change in the CIP were justified. The county’s growth had slowed and many projects were no longer needed at the time. Surely individual perceptions of traffic at discrete points in time can be negative, but as I recall traffic studies showed the subject roads at reasonable levels of serviceability. In particular Mr. Weitzman seems to be fixated on Bass Lake Road and, being a Placerville resident, likely was receiving reports of those sorts of individual perceptions from someone in the El Dorado Hills area. As someone once told me, the plural of anecdote is not evidence. So, again, I’m flattered that Mr. Weitzman credits me with such great power. However, whether through misinformation from other sources, misinterpretation of the facts before him or just plain distortion of the same, he got it all wrong. Wrong on my influence, wrong on what he alleges I didn’t know and wrong on the quality of staff analysis and the board’s decision. That’s three strikes. Roger Niello is a former California assemblyman and former interim director of the El Dorado County Community Development Agency.

Letters to the Editor A lot to offer? EDITOR: agree with Travis Keahy’s letter of Jan. 22 regarding Ray Nutting. I believe Ray’s current run for county supervisor will be his third attempt to occupy the District 2 supervisor seat. Ray’s second run ended under questionable circumstances and his third attempt is starting under questionable circumstances. Yet Ray thinks he has much to offer county residents with his service. As a result of the Austin vs. El Dorado County lawsuit, the county faces a potential loss of $30 million for illegal collection of TIM fees. A cursory look at public records indicates that Ray was a member of the Board of Supervisors in 2012 when the illegal collection of fees was discovered. The same is true of supervisorial candidate Ron Briggs. I don’t know who is actually responsible for placing the county in such an awkward financial position, but it appears to have happened under the watchful eyes of these two candidates. Go figure. BILL MOSACK Placerville

I

Hidahl for District 1 supervisor EDITOR: ohn Hidahl is a leader dedicated to serving the community. He strives to serve the best interests of all and is open to creative problem solving. He makes sure El Dorado Hills issues are clearly represented to the other four county supervisors who may not always fully appreciate the unique concerns of a suburban area. I first met John at the dedication of the El Dorado Hills Community Services District Community Park in June 1990. He chaired the citizen committee during the design and construction phases of that park. The 40-acre Community Park became the central focus of El Dorado Hills’ recreational, social and political activity. At the same time, he served — often as chair — of the Area Planning Advisory Committee that was created to funnel ideas and concerns of local residents to the county Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors on General Plan issues. APAC continues to be highly regarded as a valuable tool in the county’s planning process. Many development proposals were modified, even

J

stopped, on advice of this group. In addition, John initiated and chaired the 2004 effort to incorporate El Dorado Hills. As a city, residents would have gained local control over growth and development. When the original EDH (executive) golf course closed in 2007, John tirelessly led the effort to keep it open or — at minimum — retain its open space/recreation zoning. It was John who proposed Measure E, “Save the Golf Course,” which resulted in more than 91 percent voter support to keep the 100-acre site undeveloped. The vote was advisory only, therefore retaining John as our District 1 supervisor keeps him in a place of influence on this important issue before the Planning Commission and the other four supervisors. John — a 41 year EDH resident — was an engineering director and senior program manager at Aerojet General, served 33 years on the El Dorado Hills Water District (Fire Department) Board and represented District 1 on the county Parks Commission. As supervisor, he currently sits on 12 committees representing El Dorado County and is tirelessly visible at events and meetings around our community. Vote four more years of John Hidahl as our El Dorado Hills representative. WAYNE LOWERY El Dorado Hills

Time for change in California EDITOR: id you know, except for one year (199596), the California State Assembly has been under the control (49 years) of the Democrats. And for the last 14 years the entire state government has been under Democrat/Progressives leadership. So what have these Democrat governors, their administrations, senators and assembly members done for Californians and their families compared to other states? California ranks No. 1 for highest poverty and highest income tax, second highest gas taxes, 43rd for fiscal solvency, worst business climate, 43rd in education, worst for quality of life two years in a row and 20 percent of the most miserable cities in

ifteen-yearolds eating their boogers is inappropriate — 5-year-olds not so much. Seventhgrade boys farting (intentionally) in the lunch line is inappropriate. Intentionally farting in crowded spaces is CHRIS inappropriate in the best of cases, sick behavior at worst. Wikipedia asserts that emitting flatulence in a crowded elevator is culturally inappropriate but completely legal — in this country anyway. Inappropriate actions have consequences. A collective “Ewww!” from the lunch line is a consequence

of the boy’s lack of social grace. It would be inappropriate if a seventh-grade girl did it too, but it would be infinitely less common based on my experience. Five years teaching junior high provided me with a lifetime (or two lifetimes) of experiencing DALEY inappropriate behavior. Evidently it’s pretty much required, especially of adolescent boys, as a rite of passage. Unfortunately such a reputation can follow the offending lad well into his teen years if not further. I also know this from teaching at the high school and even college level. The tribal memory runs deep, I can tell you.

Cutting in line at the ice cream shop is inappropriate, no less so at the post office but probably safer. Telling edgy jokes accompanied by raucous behavior in an upscale eatery will usually get you 86ed from the establishment pdq. Why? Because it is totally inappropriate and everybody knows it. Getting a little water on your hand, sneaking up behind someone and pretending to sneeze on the back of their neck while flicking the water on them is inappropriate as all get out. However, if you’re doing it to your brother, who absolutely deserved it every time and a lot worse frankly, it’s exceedingly appropriate. T-Ping the vice principal’s house on Halloween is inappropriate as well as riskier than the anticipated reward. Likewise, setting the bag of dog poop on fire on the neighbor’s

porch. (Full disclosure) I have never been a participant in nor a witness to any of these pranks, but they do represent a scad of urban myths. Not unlike cow tipping or knocking over the outhouse in a decent collection of rural myths. Stiffing a valuable and vulnerable ally currently in a shooting war with a major hostile power is not inappropriate. It’s treacherous and immoral at best and ought to be illegal, in my book. It should have warranted censure if not removal. Republican senators really go out on a limb when they dare to possibly infer or maybe suggest that this president’s shakedown of Ukraine was no more than inappropriate. Honestly, I’ve seen more backbone in a $2.99 box of fishing worms. Chris Daley is a biweekly columnist for the Mountain Democrat.

the United States are in California. In a recent poll California voters listed homelessness as their No. 1 issue in the 2020 election. According to a 2019 federal government report, there was actually a decline in homelessness in 29 states, as well as in Washington, D.C. While homelessness in the nation is lower, this was offset by a spike in California’s homeless of 21,000. Gov. Newsom recently declared himself the Homeless Czar in California. Let’s take a look at the governor’s résumé and qualifications for this new, self-appointed position: From 2004 to 2011 Newsom was the mayor of San Francisco with no net decline in the city’s homeless population under his leadership. He was then elected lieutenant governor, serving under Gov. Jerry Brown for eight years. Newsom has been the current governor for two years. So after 16 years in a position of leadership, and 10 of those 14 years with a state government and Legislature entirely controlled by Democrats, the homeless problem in California has been upgraded to crisis status. Newsom and Democrats have been touting that California has a $21.5 billion surplus, along with $36 billion in general and special fund reserves.

These numbers do not include the billions of dollars in local government reserves. At the same time, however, the California Teachers Retirement System has $100 billion in unfunded liabilities, with $1.3 trillion in unfunded liabilities for the California Public Employees Retirement System Newsom, Democrats, teachers unions and others support petitions for ballot measures that would repeal the tax protection in Proposition 13 for commercial and industrial properties and, yes, this measure would turn billions of tax dollars over to school administrators and local politicians with no guarantee of how the money would be spent. Don’t forget their passage of Assembly Bill 5 that is already robbing California workers their right to earn a living. Don’t allow the policies, mismanagement and control of Newsom and the Democrats force even more residents, businesses and those who provide the services and goods to families and communities to flee California. I’m standing up and voting for change. What do we have to lose? TERRY GHERARDI Cameron Park

Bell bound for Western Oregon

Democrat photo by Kevin Christensen

Danny Bell – a three-year-starting quarterback for El Dorado High School – signs a letter of intent Wednesday, Feb. 5, to attend and play football at Western Oregon University. On hand for the special day were classmates, staff, coaches, former teammates and family, including his father Dan, left, and mother Liz. Bell was an all-league performer in the Sierra Valley Conference and named Offensive MVP his sophomore season. “All good things must come to end,” Bell said. “I will miss my teammates, coaches and teachers at El Dorado. aboard the 21-year-old and 11-yearold geldings. Ashker said her ride was to show people that horses, thoroughbreds in particular, can have uses other than for racing. They can be part of event competitions, dressage, western barrel racing or just as trail horses. Not content to put the horses out to pasture on their return home, once a month Ashker and Friedman take the well-traveled horses out for a meet-and-greets with residents at Gold Country Retirement Center and Pavilion Memory Care. But now Ashker has a problem. The owner of 10 thoroughbred horses, two dogs and two birds, the 63-year-old needs a home for her menagerie of pets as she must move from the ranch where she is currently living by the end of March. All of her horses are rescues or the foals of rescued track thoroughbreds. “My horses are my life,” Ashker said. “My horses were champions.

They owe me nothing. I owe them a good home.” Ashker said she started riding horses when she was 6-years-old. Over the years she has trained horses, given riding lessons and helped people select the right horse for them. Her daughter Laine also rides and competes at the Olympic level in dressage and eventing. In the future Ashker said she may take her horses to children’s homes or other retirement centers once she gets relocated. “You get a wonderful feeling of giving when you reach out like this.” Not looking for a handout in seeking a new home for herself and her horses, Ashker said she wants a “place to grow with the horses and add to the community.” Ashker, Primitivo and the gang are looking for 10 acres with a small home to rent in the Placerville area. Ashker can be reached at (530) 333-7009 or by email at valerieashker@gmail.com.

his friend Jim left The Wave first, working for newspapers in Westchester, Escondido and Fullerton before becoming advertising director for the Auburn Journal in Placer County, his most recent post before his first and only stint as a publisher. Rod and wife Judy would find themselves moving to El Dorado County in the wake of the Webbs locating in Camino. The late Judy Cardwell would work for the newspaper several years, taking care of folks who walked through the door from her station at the front desk. Rod said the families that began having kids at about the same time would get together for parties, events, even reunions of the fraternity to which he and Jim belonged. “We were living the American dream — that was a generation that wanted to succeed but also wanted to maintain relationships with others,” added Cardwell, who also recalled that Jim “loved his movies, music and reading.” “But his sense of humor, that was really something,” he said. Cardwell said Jim would become serious regarding certain subjects, however — such as how proud he was of his family. “He spoke so highly of his son and daughter and of course, he is so proud of his grandchildren.” Jim and Barbara had two children, Melissa and Jeff, and three grandchildren, Catherine, Alexander and Andrew. Asked what she thinks her husband would have said is his greatest accomplishment in life, Barbara replied, “He would have said his family is what made him most proud.

“I really looked forward to those talks. He was always supportive of me and I admired his intelligence and the man himself. He was my friend as well as my boss.” Longtime friend and fellow newspaper employee Rod Cardwell, who actually met Jim when both attended George Washington High School in LA and remained buddies until the end, recalls that the first paying job at a newspaper for both was at the same firm. “That was at the Southwest Wave in LA,” said Cardwell, 81, who lives in Folsom. “And yes, Jim started his career as a newspaper boy — I think most of us did in those days, in one form or another.” Jim Webb advanced his career working on the advertising side of the operation, but the publisher understood what is required to make a news story relevant and welcomed by readers. Despite his occasional forays into the newsroom to wonder what the headline was going to be on stories such as the one about a major advertiser’s son getting a DUI, Webb knew when to throw in the towel, with style and grace. “He would come into the newsroom, all fired up about something, but then once he listened to our explanations and understood our mission is to tell the news regardless of who is making the headlines, he would usually crack a joke as he walked out of the newsroom,” said Escabar. “If you could get him to smile, you knew things were going to be OK. If he started laughing, then you really knew. He was always fair and kind.” Cardwell recalled that

I was going to have to pull over,” said Dr. John Mooney, a Placerville chiropractor who became fast friends with Webb upon their first meeting. “Jim could see that I was about to lose it, but instead of easing up, he began poking his elbow in my ribs.” That particular outing’s hilarity was confirmed by Mountain Democrat Special Publications Editor Mimi Escabar, who was in the car being driven by Mooney at the time. Ask any of his colleagues at any newspaper, or any of his friends who gathered at car shows, the movies or the coffee house in Camino and they all recall that laughter and remember that smile. Barbara Webb, Jim’s wife of 53 years, said she realized pretty much from the start that the guy she met

amount of benzene that diesel combustion produces so we measured benzene levels at the SnowGlobe Music Festival and they were above the level set under California’s Proposition 65.” Prop. 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, lists benzene as causing cancer and reproduction toxicity. “We were really focusing on the reproductive harm because the typical audience at a music festival is younger people, so there are a lot of young women that either could be pregnant or want to get pregnant so we’re concerned about protecting those people,” Cox said. In January 2019 CEH provided SnowGlobe with a 60-day notice of violation of Prop 65. Then on Dec. 20, 2019, CEH filed a suit against SnowGlobe. Cox said SnowGlobe is attempting to work with CEH and a consent judgment, essentially a settlement, has been filed. “One thing the festival is exploring is whether they could get electric power to the site, the other thing

While the city of South Lake Tahoe is not named in the suit, they’ve taken a lot of heat from residents about the festival. In an email from former city manager Frank Rush, he said the city found out about the lawsuit a few days after the 2019 festival. “My understanding is that the lawsuit stemmed from the 2018 event and that SnowGlobe made appropriate adjustments and was in compliance for the 2019 event. I don’t expect this issue to impact the city’s agreement with SnowGlobe in any way,” Rush said. He also said the city was concerned with the issue and thought it might be more beneficial to target the generator manufacturer rather than the festivals. A trial regarding the motion for consent judgment is set for March 17 at an Alameda County court.

“I don’t think anyone is asking for an immediate pay raise but I think we need to look into the future,” he said. “If it stays constant over the next five years I can guarantee you we will have assistants making 20 percent more than the supervisors are making. Is that an equitable, balanced situation?” The Board of Supervisors hasn’t received a pay raise in more than 13 years. Currently they each receive a monthly salary of $6,406.40. District 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel and Hidahl expressed eagerness to take control of their pay raises and salaries going forward. The board evaluated the idea of “indexing” their pay raises to another factor outside the county’s domain — such as raises for a Superior Court judge — but ultimately to leave the issue alone. Hidahl noted that several nearby counties — Napa, Sacramento and Placer — all tag their supervisor salaries to other factors rather than decide upon raises for themselves. Before the meeting the Taxpayers Association

of El Dorado County registered its opposition to any potential raises for the board. In a statement, president Andy Nevis challenged the study that revealed a possible need for salary increases. “As reported in the staff report, in absolute terms El Dorado County supervisor compensation is 9.42 percent below the market median,” he wrote. “When the per-capita factor is applied … it is 11.17 percent above the median.” On top of increased costs, Nevis added that pay raises could have negative ripple effects throughout the county ranks. “It would signal to employees that the board isn’t willing to adhere to the compensation policy it has pursued for most other employees, reducing morale and encouraging future requests for raises,” he wrote. While she too wasn’t seeking a pay raise, Supervisor Novasel noted that her post has become a 60-hour-a-week job and that the position shouldn’t be minimized despite comparably low population numbers.

T

his chocolate celebration will satisfy the sweet tooth and more. On Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Forni Building at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, 100 Placerville Drive in Placerville, from 6-9 p.m. attendees will be treated to a decadent fundraiser — the 22nd annual A Chocolate Affair. Hosted by the Soroptimist International of Placerville, A Chocolate Affair benefits local women, children, educational scholarships, awards and other community service projects — especially in areas of homelessness through its Helping Hands Program. The Chocolate Affair tickets are $45 and the event is the sole fundraiser for the Soroptimist International of Placerville. Since the event’s inception more than 20 years ago A Chocolate Affair has raised more than $600,000 and the club is looking to add to that total in 2020 with a night to remember. “Putting on the Chocolate Affair is a team effort with a compelling goal,” said Lynne Rogers, president of the Soroptimist International of Placerville. “Success for this fundraiser allows us to help women and girls in our community, so it is very important.”

What’s happening Live music from different time periods and genres will fill the air and El Dorado County District 3 Supervisor Brian Veerkamp will serve as this year’s auctioneer. This year’s chocolate extravaganza includes libations from awardwinning El Dorado County wineries and

Chocolate creations abound at A Chocolate Affair this Saturday in Placerville. breweries, along with delicious samples of food (especially chocolate) from some of the finest restaurants and caterers in the area. The popular El Dorado County establishments donating food and tasty chocolate dishes consist of Annabella’s Chocolate, Caffé Santoro, Crack’d Toffee, Delloree’s Confections, Diane Wilkinson Catering, Dicky’s BBQ Pit, Enchanted Forest Dining Experience, Gold Country Retirement and Health Center, Linders Fancy Toffee, Placerville Public House and Trufflicious.

A good cause Project engineer Nicole Young of Shingle Springs started Trufflicious as a side business in 2016. Young generally supplies her truffle treats to local farmers markets and holiday events but she said A Chocolate Affair is special. “I have been a part of this event for three years and it’s definitely a worthy cause,” Young shared. “I am happy to donate my goodies and time for this because without a fundraiser with the community behind it the people it helps would go without.”

Local suppliers pouring at the annual event are Barsotti Family Juice Co., Bumgarner Winery, Charles B. Mitchell Vineyards, Colibri Ridge Winery and Vineyard, Crystal Basin Cellars, Enchanted Forest, Fenton Herriott Vineyards, Findleton Estate Winery, Gold Hill Vineyard, HWY 50 Brewery, Mediterranean Vineyards, Nello Olivo Wines, Sierra Vista Vineyards and Winery and 1850 Wine Cellars Tasting Room. According to Rogers this year’s Chocolate Affair will have a more “streamlined and sophisticated” feel and look as well as some new “FUNdraisers.”

New fun A Soroptimist Dream Board with envelopes numbered 1-100 will be displayed containing raffle tickets. A donors selection of an envelope from the board grants one raffle ticket for a special item and shows them the amount to donate. During the new Wine Cork Pull portion of the evening people can pay $20 for a numbered cork and win a corresponding bottle of wine. Attendees can take the wine home or

cork it at their table during the evening. Auction items include a truffle treasure adventure at Tesoro Mio Farm (Treasure of Mine Farm) in Placerville with truffle huntress owner Stacey O’Toole and her dog Mila. A couple will get a tour of the Teso Mio Farm while experiencing first-hand how Mila and other dogs find truffles and learn how truffles are produced. The day will end with a truffle hors d’oeuvre paired with wines from Bookshelf Wines. “It’s an honor to participate and be an auction prize in the Chocolate Affair,” shared O’toole. “Being a woman in business and helping to fight for the social justice of women through local Soroptimist events is fitting.” A scenic flight for two over the beautiful skies of San Francisco, Napa Valley or Lake Tahoe will be awarded to another high bidder. A trip south beyond the border to Mexico with a special mule ride is also included in the auction fun. The El Dorado High

School Athletic Boosters is providing “kid-power” by selling tickets, setting up the event and collecting donations. “We are projecting over 100 kids and adults will volunteer for this year’s Chocolate Affair,” said Ken Harris, first-year president of the EDHS Athletics Boosters. “I have witnessed the local Soroptimist organization help girls in need at El Dorado High School with getting prom and homecoming dresses. It’s a valuable lesson for the kids to learn about giving back.” Sponsors for this year chocolate extravaganza include the Mountain Democrat, Gold Key Storage, Serrano Associates, Coloma Resort, El Dorado Savings Bank, Frank’s Body Shop, Peek Family Fund at El Dorado Community Foundation, El Dorado Disposal, Stymeist Inc., The Idea Factory, River City Bank, Thompson Family of Dealerships and Joe Vicini Inc. “It is a very rewarding experience to come together for this purpose,” Rogers shared. “We are very grateful to our partners, sponsors and donors — both past and present — for contributing to the success of this event for over 20 years.” For tickets and more information visit chocolate-affair.com. Second Saturday

Two bands will rock at the Shingle Springs Community Center The Feb. 8 Shingle Springs Community Center Second Saturday Concert features Left of Cool opening the show and Cuttin’ the Chord closing the night.

T

he Sacramento-based band Cuttin’ The Chord, fronted by Derek Fresquez, plays contemporary guitar driven blues with a soulful rockin’ style. Just celebrating a new CD release, the band is Fresquez (lead guitar and lead vocals), Tony Holt (bass guitar) and Vern Foster (drums). Fresquez is an incredible guitarist, feeling everything he plays. The audience will get a glimpse into the soul of this guitarist and singer/songwriter as he and his band perform everything from rocked up blues, to funky tunes and gut wrenching slow blues with a few good old rock-and-roll favorites. The group plays with high energy. It is an authentic show to watch, tasty music to hear and plenty of groove for the dancers. Now in his 30s, Fresquez has studied the blues since age 14. That’s when he got his first guitar. Some of his biggest influences are Smokin’ Joe Kubek, Robert Cray and of course Stevie Ray Vaughan. The band’s name Cuttin’ the Chord is Fresquez’ way of honoring his family band Rumpshaker, where he said it all started. This humble young man has a very special feel for this music. He can lay down killer guitar licks and gritty vocals all night long. For a short period he worked with the Ryder Green Band playing rhythm guitar. The group won the Bay Area International Blues Competition and went on to compete in Memphis. This gig was very short-lived, as Fresquez was destined to front his own band. Drummer Foster is a pocket player, with a mean blues shuffle. He absolutely loves funky grooves and slow burnin’ blues. In the Sacramento blues scene for more than 20 years, Foster has played for two Sammies Awardwinning bands. They were the Sacramento Blues Revue and Two Tone Steiny and the Cadillacs. Foster also performed with Bay Area IBC winner Ryder Green Band. Bass player Holt hails from Cleveland, Ohio where he started playing at the age of 10. Holt was in his first “real” band at age 17. After moving to California Holt landed a gig playing for Pinkie Rideau and Blind Resistance. He has opened for Buddy Guy, Robben Ford, Valerie Wellington and John Lee Hooker, to name a few. While he enjoys playing all styles of music his passion is driving blues and rock. When he heard that Cuttin’ The Chord was looking for a bass player Holt called up and said, “I’m Your Guy.”

They are joined by the inexplicable Tom Gunterman (Walking Spanish, Whole Lotta Little Big Band, Slate Mountain) on fiddle and vocals.

Enjoy a delightful evening of fabulous, four-hands piano News release

E

l Dorado County Community Concert Association’s fourth concert of the season will feature piano duo Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi, 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Pioneers in the use of four-hands piano in jazz, Trick and Alderighi have earned widespread success with their arrangements of classics from the stride piano, ragtime and boogie woogie repertoires, as well as from the swing era and the Great American Songbook. They have performed across the United States, Europe and Japan, winning the acclaim of critics and fans alike. Blending impeccable technique and mature musicality with humor and showmanship, they are considered the most engaging piano duo dedicated to the repertoire of classic jazz. Trick, from St. Louis, is a leading exponent of stride piano, and Alderighi, from Milan, is one of Italy’s foremost jazz pianists. They met at a piano festival in Switzerland in 2008. Three years later, they started to collaborate on a four-hands piano project dedicated to classic jazz, preparing arrangements of songs from the swing era, as well as drawing from the ragtime and blues repertoire. Following the release of the duo’s first album, “Two for One” (2012), Trick and Alderighi have been invited to perform widely in the United States, Europe and Japan. A second CD, “Sentimental Journey” (2014), shows their commitment to the formula of four-hands duets on one piano, rarely used in jazz. Aviation legends share the stage in ‘Ride Sally Ride’ Liz Liles-Brown News release

B

Street Theatre is taking to the skies in 2020. Its first production in the Family Friendly Theatre series is “Ride Sally Ride: The Story of Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride.” These women of space and aviation were pioneers that refused to let gender biases stop them from greatness. For Earhart, she strived to break records by becoming the first woman to pilot a plane across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, broke the women’s altitude record in 1922 and was the first and fastest woman to fly nonstop, transcontinental trips. Earhart paved the way for Ride to achieve her own groundbreaking

accomplishments as the first American woman in space aboard the Challenger shuttle in 1983 who maintained a decorated career with NASA. Playwright Tara Sissom said she and Katerina Pruitt had two goals when they began this project two years ago: inspire and entertain young audiences about women in aviation. “We hope to inspire with the message that nothing is impossible and more importantly you don’t need permission from anyone to pursue your biggest and wildest dreams,” Sissom said. Since these two incredible women never had the opportunity to meet in real life, the play imagines a young

Sally Ride defying her teachers and writing an essay about Amelia Earhart. But as she’s writing, she falls asleep and in her dreams she’s visited by the famous pilot who encourages her toward greatness. Eventually Sally goes to Stanford and there’s a big opportunity to be recruited by NASA, but once again there are those in her life who doubt her capabilities and instincts and she must once again look to her mentor in order to overcome. For this production B Street has hired Los Angeles-based director Hannah Wolf to bring her expertise in staging productions that she refers to as “subversively shiny.” “I’m incredibly excited to work on this new play

for young audiences and to bring them the story of Sally Ride,” Wolf said. “This play has it all, big adventure, friendships and the challenges that it takes to pursue one’s dream. Tara and Katerina have created a story that feels like a roller coaster ride, where Sally learns about the importance of trying — even if you might fail — and that she has a voice that’s worth listening to.”

The playwrights Sissom is a member of the B Street Theatre Core Acting Company and a member of the Upstairs at the B improv trio Maximum Occupancy and the roleplaying, paranormal investigation show “Seekers of the Strange.” A founding member of The New Colony in Chicago, she developed and wrote “11:11” (Richard Christensen Theatre-Victory Gardens) and “Pancake Breakfast” (The Viaduct). She holds a BFA in music theatre from Elon University and teaches in the B Street Theatre Studio for Young Actors. Learn

more at tarasissom.com. Pruitt lives in Sacramento with her children True and Langston and her husband David. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees in English with an emphasis in American and women’s literature are from UCLA and Georgetown University. She also has a law degree from UCLA. She was a public school teacher for years. Students who think outside of boxes have always been her favorite. She is a B Street board member.

The director Wolf is a Los Angelesbased director originally from Juneau, Alaska. She makes “subversively shiny” work for the stage that experiments with form, content and the role of the audience. Wolf collaborates with playwrights, musicians, magicians, craft brewers, dancers, puppeteers and many others to develop new plays and to subvert old ones. She founded the LA event Meet Cute and curates the blog Ask A Director. For

more information visit hannahjwolf.com.

About B Street Theatre B Street Theatre is a nonprofit, professional theater company producing primarily new work for adults, families and children. The California State Fair announces the sixth California Commercial Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition. Judging will take place at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds on March 4. A team of 15 certified sensory experts, led by head judge Sue Langstaff, will gather in the state’s capital to determine the very best extra virgin and flavored olive oils produced in the state. Each year more than 700 new bottles of extra virgin and flavored olive oils line the cellar shelves of Cal Expo, each producer hoping their care, expertise and hard work will result in a coveted Best of Show Golden Bear Trophy. After five years of successful olive oil competitions, State Fair ribbons now grace myriad of new olive oil tasting rooms of California. The two 2020 Best of Show winners, one for extra virgin and one for flavored olive oil, will be honored at a Capitol steps press event on June 25. Award-winning producers will receive an exclusive opportunity to sample and sell their oils to the fair’s 650,000 annual guests as featured producers in the California’s Kitchen exhibit at the California State Fair. Fair guests will expand their own appreciation for high quality oils in tasting classes taught by industry professionals at the adjacent Taste of California Education Center. Head judge Langstaff is the principal of Applied Sensory LLC, a consulting company specializing in providing independent sensory evaluation services to the wine, beer

and olive oil industries. Langstaff will employ her expertise and experience at the California State Fair olive oil judging to lead a team of 15 judges and ensure a fair and ethical judging process. Langstaff brings with her serious credentials. She leads a commercial olive oil taste panel recognized by the American Oil Chemists’ Society and is an instructor for the Sensory Evaluation of Olive Oil Certificate Course conducted through the UC Davis Olive Center. She has a master’s degree from UC Davis where she studied sensory science, enology and brewing. She has been a professional judge at the Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition and other California competitions. She has also been the head judge at several international olive oil competitions: in 2013 for the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards and in 2017 and 2018 for the South African Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition. Langstaff is co-editor of the book “Olive Oil Sensory Science” (Wiley/ Blackwell, 2014) and is the creator of The Defects Wheel for olive oil, beer and wine. She was profiled in the bestseller “Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal” (W. W. Norton and Co., 2013) by Mary Roach. Visit CAStateFair.org for more information and to enter online. The deadline for online entry for the 2020 California State Fair Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition is Feb. 14. Chemical lab analysis results and oil samples are due at Cal Expo offices on Feb. 21.

Sacramento History Alliance expands programs Traci Rockefeller Cusack Sacramento History Museum SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento History Museum and Alliance announce the popular Time-Travel Tours program — that includes Old Sacramento Underground tours and Gold Fever! games — are now offered yearround. Officially launched in 2010, Old Sacramento Underground tours begin at the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento State Historic Park and the interactive and family friendly Gold Fever! games start at the Sacramento Visitor’s Center. Both of the interpretive and history-rich tours are programs offered by the Sacramento History Museum. The hugely popular and interpretive Old Sacramento Underground tours provide guests with the unique opportunity to explore what has been hidden beneath the city for more than 150 years while uncovering the facts and legends that lie below historic buildings and sidewalks. Tour

Gold Rush. Never the same experience twice, Gold Fever! games relive Sacramento’s early days when gold fever ruled amid horrible disasters that threatened fates and fortunes. To spice things up even more, elements of chance are introduced that could change the fate of tour guests. Through the course of the lively tours that meander through the historical district, visitors discover if they successfully escaped the many floods, if they managed to keep their gold dust (or lost it all at the gambling tables) and if they survived the fires, disease and occasional steamboat explosion. All Time-Travel Tour tickets include complimentary admission to the Sacramento History Museum. Tour dates and times fluctuate with the seasons and during holiday weekends; visit the website for the most updated schedule. For more information or to purchase tickets for Gold Fever! games and Old Sacramento Underground tours visit sachistorymuseum.org.

While not offered yearround, popular adult-only “After Hours” tours resume Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays beginning May 1 and continue through Oct. 31 with one tour at 6 p.m.

TOM RUSSELL

Russell brings Americana sound to Sutter Creek News release

T

om Russell brings his “October in the Railroad Earth” album release tour to Sutter Creek Theatre, 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Singer-songwriter, painter and essayist Russell has released 35 highly acclaimed albums and published six books, including a book on his art, a book of his songs and a five-star rated book of essays, “Ceremonies of the Horsemen.” Russell was awarded the 2015 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music journalism and his paintings reside in several major American museums and are represented through six world galleries. Russell’s latest recording of original compositions, “October in the Railroad Earth,” was released March 15, 2019, on Frontera Records in North America and CD/LP on Proper Records everywhere else. “October in the Railroad Earth” follows the acclaimed 2017 Frontera/Proper album “Folk Hotel” and Russell’s tribute to Ian & Sylvia on

True North Records, “Play One More,” both receiving worldwide acclaim. Between major releases in 2018, Russell recorded the Bruce Springsteen track “Across The Border” for the three-disc Appleseed Records anniversary sampler, “Roots and Branches,” and issued a re-recording of early classics on Frontera, “Old Songs Yet To Sing.” Russell’s previous album of new original material was the 2015 folk opera that Thom Jurek of allmusic.com hailed as a masterpiece, “The Rose of Roscrae.” Named “the top folk album of 2015” by Mojo magazine, Roscrae was also lauded as “maybe the most important Americana record of all time” by UK Folk. The album was included in Top 10 lists of dozens of publications. The award-winning historical Sutter Creek Theatre, 44 Main St. in Sutter Creek, is an intimate, 215-seat former silent film theater with superb sound.
