A bit of Gold Rush history
O
n the South Fork of the American River by Highway 49 is the little town that started it all. Coloma gets its name from a nearby Southern Maidu village called Culloma. It is most famous as the site of the 1848 California gold discovery by James Wilson Marshall when he picked up a few flakes of gold from the tailrace of Sutter’s Mill, which he had built. For the first few years after the famed discovery of gold, Coloma was where everyone headed. They might end up somewhere else but Coloma, “Sutter’s Mill” or just “The Mill” was their original destination.

The town rapidly grew as it added hotels, stores, saloons and even a post office but when the gold became more difficult to find, miners left for other places and Coloma became almost a ghost town. Fortunately the state of California was able to purchase much of the land and buildings and create Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. In 1890 Marshall was buried on a hill above the park. An arm on the statue of him points to the place where he found the gold.
Did you know? Sutter did not own the land on which the mill was built, although he tried to get the U.S. Government to grant it to him. In spite of that in December 1848, for $6,000 in cash and promises, Sutter sold his share in the mill and the land to two men. In partnership with Marshall they would complete the sawmill in 1849 and use it to saw lumber until around 1853.

ichele Adams is quick to say, “I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus,” but it took her being hit by a car for her thyroid disease to finally be diagnosed. Adams has always been an active person, but for a few years, she had felt tired and had a constant tightness in her throat. She was diagnosed with post-nasal drip but did not feel relief after a year of treatment. “I thought this exhaustion, hoarse voice and lump in my throat were just my new normal,” Adams said. “I’d accepted it, and I shouldn’t have.” During this time, Adams went on a bike ride in northeastern New Jersey — something she still does

This lack of awareness can endanger a person’s health and well-being. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located low in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. I’ve also spoken to patients who’ve experienced an inability to concentrate, which seriously affected their performance at work.” Several disorders can arise if the thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Curry-Spiced Tofu with Asian Vegetables Recipe courtesy of the American Heart Association Servings: 4 12 ounces light, extra-firm tofu, drained and patted dry, cut into four slices 1 tablespoon, plus 1 1/2 teaspoons, curry powder, divided 12 ounces packaged fresh stir-fry vegetables 1 tablespoon water 2 teaspoons canola oil 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 large onion, cut into 3/4-inch wedges 4 large garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup light coconut milk 1/4-1/2 teaspoon chili garlic sauce Put tofu on large plate. Sprinkle tofu on both sides with 1 tablespoon curry powder. In large microwaveable bowl, microwave vegetables and water on high 2-3 minutes, or until vegetables are almost tender-crisp. Pour off remaining water. In large nonstick skillet, heat canola oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat bottom. Cook tofu in single layer 3-4 minutes on each side, or until browned.
