Funds to help restore Grizzly Flat watershed Eric Jaramishian Staff writer

to advance water savings by protecting watersheds impacted by wildland fire, restoring aquatic habitats and stream beds and advancing other environmental restoration projects to mitigate drought-related impacts. The county water agency, in partnership with the El Dorado and Georgetown Divide resource conservation districts, will implement reforestation of approximately 280 acres of burned land on

The El Dorado County Water Agency will receive nearly $1.9 million in federal funding for watershed restoration to secure the water supply in Grizzly Flat following Caldor Fire destruction. The chunk of money is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s $36.1 million awarded to 27 projects across 12 states and Puerto Rico

the North Canyon Creek and Big Canyon Creek watersheds, which provide the sole water supply for the community of Grizzly Flat, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s project description. El Dorado County Water Agency General Manager Ken Payne said increased erosion in the burned areas is expected. “(There will) be sediment and debris in the water that comes down, so that’s part of the restoration,” Payne noted,

adding that the material will be in the water supply over the next three to five years. The Caldor Fire destroyed about two-thirds of structures in Grizzly Flat, along with two intakes and the surrounding watersheds which provide their only water supply. The blaze also resulted in loss of habitat and vegetation cover and water quality impairments. The project aims to improve water quality and reduce the cost of maintaining the water

supply system by clearing dead trees and salvaging merchantable timber. Reforestation will include planting native coniferous tree species such as ponderosa pine, sugar pine, incense cedar and Douglas fir within the project area, notes the Bureau of Reclamation. Invasive plants will be reduced and wildlife habitat created. Vegetation spacing in the n

Local fire captain always on the job Krysten Kellum Editor A local firefighter saved a man’s life Sunday night. El Dorado County Fire Protection District Capt. Jacob Poganski and his wife Christy were driving home at about 11 p.m. on Interstate 80 after having dinner with friends in midtown Sacramento when an SUV ahead of them crashed into the center divide. Jacob said he noticed flames beginning to flare up in the engine of the SUV, which reportedly had run into the back of a big rig.

Capt. Jacob Poganski Nobody was outside the vehicle and that alerted Jacob someone could still be inside. Christy called 911. Jacob said he saw the driver slumped over the steering wheel and he knew he needed to get him out of the SUV. Wearing shorts, a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops, and without any extrication tools, Jacob bent and pried open the driver’s damaged door and pulled him from the wreck. “By that time the fire was in the dash and the floor of the vehicle,” Jacob told the Mountain Democrat. The driver regained consciousness and bystanders made sure n

You feel like you can’t miss a shot. “Every shot is huge because one mistake makes you feel like you’re going to lose. To be able to do it under pressure and come back, that’s just a special day.” Romo’s winnings will be donated to charity.
