copy letters and phone calls, tabling the issue actually seemed thoroughly embraced Tuesday by many speakers from the public, some 50 of whom waited patiently — some not so patiently — to voice their opinions during the Zoom-assisted meeting. With one exception during the marathon meeting, when a caller used a swear word and was immediately cut off, those calling in managed to remain mostly civil, as the council continued hearing from constituents until well after 11 p.m. The entire meeting, in fact, ran from 6 p.m. to two minutes after midnight before Mayor Michael

The question of whether a hangman’s noose should remain depicted on Placerville’s city seal, on historical street signs, official stationery and other city venues was left twisting in the wind Tuesday after the council voted 4-1 to table the matter for several months. The matter of the noose was stretched to the beginning of next year. While at first blush that action may be disappointing to the hundreds of local residents and others who weighed in on the issue through emails, hard

Saragosa whacked the gavel to end the session. Caller Sue Taylor queried midmeeting whether the council had deliberately “put more items ahead of ” the noose discussion “to get people to drop off ” and thus not be heard during the meeting. (In fact, council members Kara Taylor and Mark Acuna did request that two items — a pothole report and update on crime from interim police Chief Wren — be rearranged on the agenda so they would be n

The proposed change to the Placerville city seal omits a noose that was hanging from the tree behind the miner.

More restrictions ‘inevitable’ says county public health officer Dylan Svoboda Staff writer So far El Dorado County is one of 26 California counties that has avoided Gov. Gavin Newsom’s growing “watch list,” which comes with additional coronavirus health restrictions and business closures. With local COVID-19 “ … I think we’ve cases on the rise, that been lucky could soon because we’re a change. It’s just a little more spread matter of out, not because time until we’ve been doing El Dorado joins Placer, everything right.” Sacramento — Dr. Nancy Williams, and Yolo El Dorado County public counties on health officer the state watch list, according to Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams. It’s “inevitable” the county crosses California’s monitoring threshold in the coming days or weeks as testing backlogs bear out, she said during an El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. If counties reported more than 100 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over a 14-day period, they’re placed on the state’s monitoring list. If a county remains over that threshold for three straight days, additional coronavirus safety restrictions are put in place. n

espite the COVID-19 pandemic closing the El Dorado County Fair this year, local students involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America were still able to show and auction their livestock over the weekend. Thursday through Saturday young farmers from all over the county brought their steer, goats, lambs and rabbits to compete for awards and go to auction. In the past livestock was auctioned off to the highest bidder in person but instead was this year sold in an online format for the first time due to the current health crisis. “This was the highlight of the year for me,” said 2020 Supreme Grand Champion Market Steer winner Elizabeth Bloxsom. “I Abigail Brown, 17, Jessica Thompson, 17, and Haley Richardson, would have been devastated if we could not have had the event 18, with Ponderosa High School’s Future Farmers of America, his year.” show their goats at the El Dorado County Junior Livestock n See Junior Livestock, page A9 Auction.

Big-hearted, longtime Placerville developer Wesley Wilkinson dies Dawn Hodson Staff writer Wesley Wilkinson, 94, a beloved longtime fixture in El Dorado County and a man who left his mark, died June 20 at home surrounded by his five children. A man of few words but known for his interesting way of phrasing things called “Wes-isums,” his last words to his family were, “It’s been a hell of a ride.” Born Aug. 22, 1925, in Placerville to Willard and Mary (Sweeney) Wilkinson, Wesley was the eldest of three children and one of seven grandchildren of John Sweeney and Mary Akin and a cousin of former El Dorado County Supervisor Jack Sweeney. Growing up on a pear ranch during the Great Depression, the experience left a lasting impression on him. He saw the indigent people who would stop by the ranch looking for work or for food. Even

though his mother struggled to feed her own family, she would still try to find something to give them to eat. That experience made him frugal as well as someone who was naturally charitable and willing to give others a helping hand. Highly motivated to further his education, after graduating from El Dorado High School Wesley rode his bicycle all the way from Placerville to Sacramento to attend Sacramento City College. Later he took classes at the University of California, Berkeley while in training for the Navy during World War II. It was while Wesley was in the Navy he met the woman who would become the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Gertrude (known as Dede), who was from Portland, Maine. Returning to Placerville together, friends would rib him about his wife’s n
