Lake house etiquette Dear Annie: We are fortunate to finally own lake property. We are thrilled! We have worked hard, and still work hard, to afford this luxury. We also like to have guests, but please, guests, be on your best manners and observe common courtesies. When you come and stay the weekend with us, bring your own beach towels, swimsuits and food and beverages (not only for yourself but also to share with others), as well as anything else you might need. You are our guests, and we want to enjoy our property with you, but for us to want to invite you back, please don’t come emptyhanded. And would it be too much to bring a hostess gift? Why not ask me what kind of beverage I like and bring that for me and my wife? We as owners are already paying for the property, utilities, upkeep, insurance and more. If you were renting a lake place, you would be expected to pay rent. Why do you think it is OK to show up empty-handed at a friend or relative’s place? We want to enjoy our lake property with you, and we want to invite you back. Please help us to do that. You don’t even need to give an explanation. ——— Dear Annie: I am writing with the hope that you and I can perform an important public service. I see many people walking on the street in front of my house, and I am seriously concerned. When I was little, my parents explained to me that I should always walk on the left side of the street. Approximately 40% of the people I see

The reason for walking on the left side of the street is that one wants to be facing the cars that are driving on his or her side of the street. Under this plan, you can move off of the street if the car seems to be too close to where you are walking. With more people talking on the phone or texting while driving, this is even more of a problem these days. If you are walking on the right side of the street, you will never know what is about to injure or even kill you (and possibly also your child or dog). — Marshall Sellers Dear Marshall: I have a feeling part of the problem lately might be that walkers and joggers often need to veer off into streets to go around another person on the sidewalk. Since they started off walking on the sidewalk, they weren’t considering the direction of traffic. Your letter makes a great case for why we should walk against the direction of traffic even when we’re walking on the sidewalk, just in case we need to do the social-distance shuffle into the street.
No room offered Dear Annie: I am a widow, 78 years old. I have a daughter who’s been married for 30 years, no children. Next month, we have several family get-togethers planned for a weekend out of town. My daughter and I had planned to travel together for the events. She lives a bit closer to where these events will take place, so the plan is for me to get to her city the night before, and then we’ll travel together the next day. Well, it seems that my daughter expected me to stay in a motel. She has a large home, including a guest room
and bathroom. I made the decision to ask her if I had done something to offend her. I haven’t seen her since Christmas due to COVID-19. I couldn’t think of anything I might have done to offend her since then. She replied that her house was not presentable for me to visit, and that’s why she didn’t invite me to stay there. She has known about the events for several weeks. If she truly wanted me to stay with her, then she had time to prepare. I think she used that as an excuse. I have always loved and treated my children equally. I feel it was not important enough to her to invite me to stay with them. My feelings are hurt. In fact, it has been five years since I last went to her home. When they come to visit, they always stay at my home rather than with my son-in-law’s family. I make sure that I have food they like, that the room they stay in is clean, that there are clean linens on the bed, etc. She’s my child. I know it would not be right for me to have resentment toward her. I will pray about it. On a human level, how do I get past this? I feel that when I do see her, I will not be comfortable around her. — Concerned Mother Dear Concerned: Your daughter didn’t clean her house in time for your visit. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you or care about you. Of course, the more gracious thing for them to have done would have been to invite you to stay; I’m not disagreeing with that. But don’t read their lack of hospitality as hostility. Perhaps she has a serious clutter problem; perhaps it’s been a very busy few weeks at work and she hasn’t had time for a deep clean. Maybe she or her husband find having any sort of overnight company extremely stressful. That said, you can express, toward the end of this trip, that you’d love to stay with her sometime. Keep the focus of the conversation on your feelings, avoiding accusations and assumptions.

The City will hold a public hearing at the Unitrans Advisory Committee meeting on the draft program update to solicit feedback on Thursday, July 23 at 4:00 PM.
