In Placerville
Pot shop plans getting hazy Pat Lakey Staff writer It’s a good thing none of the four members of the Placerville City Council was smoking marijuana as they struggled for four-and-a-half hours last week to grasp legalities and intricate issues in deciding, once again, who should be allowed to open a recreational pot store in town. Or maybe a toke or two would have helped? The council ultimately decided to toss out all the
applicants — former winners and losers — and begin the application process all over again. The council members, with Kara Taylor absent because she served on a past committee tasked with creating pot sales policy, were faced with unraveling the legal intricacies involved in a process that has taken years to unfurl, with Friday’s special meeting including statements such as this, from an associate attorney with a firm that’s helping craft Placerville’s rules for the fledgling recreational marijuana industry:
“If you are uncomfortable with disqualifying applicants due to the interim appeals because there is concern about HdL’s scoring, that’s also a valid point that the council has to reckon with. But again, it’s possible to have concerns about that and still find that the rest of the process worked itself out, in a way, where you can trust and find that the applicants chosen by the city manager were nevertheless eligible and qualified. n

Oak Ridge Trojans put a

t the home of Oak Ridge defensive coordinator Darren Jonutz and his wife Kim, there is a fine line between having fun and working diligently. That line is the door in the middle of his four-car garage. On one side of the door are more than 20 classic arcade games like Need for Speed, Deadpool and NFL Blitz. But once you go through the door to the other half of the garage, the fun and games are over and it is time to work. Every Tuesday night during the past 11 football seasons, the Trojans’ defense has met at the Jonutz home following practice, where the couple supplies players with pizza and Kim, a former Mrs. Fields employee, bakes an assortment of cookies. “I can’t even explain to you how good the cookies are,” said Avant Jacobs, who had five interceptions in 2019. “Mrs. Jonutz n

A Placerville restaurant is under fire for defying coronavirus health orders and allegedly refusing service to mask-wearing guests. Flying in the face of state restaurant regulations, Apple Bistro, a bakery/eatery off Highway 50 in Camino, continues to offer indoor dining and when visited by the Mountain Democrat did not wear face coverings. And it appears patrons are encouraged to follow along. A sign posted in front of the restaurant states: “No social conditioning. No oxygen deprivation mask. No latex dirty germ spreader. Not

Larry Hyder lived a life of many talents Thomas Frey Staff writer

here was no place in the world Larry Hyder would rather be than at his home at Indian Rock Tree Farm in Camino with his wife Geri and their family. Larry worked on the farm and walked the grounds every day even at the age of 90, just before he died July 3. Each night after dinner Geri would drive Larry and their dog Jack to the end of their 30-plus-acre property.
Larry would walk back with Jack and survey the land. It gave him a chance to check on everything and to clean up any twigs or brush that had fallen since he had walked the property the previous evening. “That was his entertainment,” Geri said. Many times when he got back from his walks, Geri and Larry would sit outside on their patio facing trees that grow upward of 50 feet into the sky.
